    Ivy Insights

The This Was The Scene Podcast is an absolute gem for fans of 90's punk rock. Hosted by Mike Doyle, this podcast dives deep into the inside stories and experiences of bands from that era. Doyle is a great interviewer, capturing the essence of the time and connecting it to the broader music industry. He also takes the time to talk to lesser-known bands that were important to the scene as a whole. The interviews are captivating and filled with nostalgia, making it a must-listen for any punk rock fan.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is Doyle's ability to bring out genuine conversations with his guests. He asks thoughtful questions that spark interesting discussions about both music and personal experiences. The interviews are not just surface-level conversations but delve into the ethos and ethics of the punk scene. It's refreshing to hear these stories from a time when music was blowing up and new genres were constantly emerging.

However, one downside of this podcast is its niche focus on the New Jersey punk scene. While it may be a dream come true for fans who grew up in that area during that specific era, it may not have as broad appeal for listeners outside that demographic or timeframe. However, even if you weren't part of that scene, there are still many interesting interviews to enjoy.

In conclusion, The This Was The Scene Podcast is a stellar podcast for anyone who loves 90's punk rock or enjoys listening to in-depth interviews about good music. Mike Doyle does an outstanding job bringing out captivating stories from bands and musicians, keeping the spirit of the scene alive through his genuine enthusiasm for music. Whether you grew up in New Jersey or simply appreciate punk rock nostalgia, this podcast is definitely worth a listen.

One of the reasons for the name change was to move away from the "straight-edge" reputation that followed the band with a name like Scared Straight. Albany NY based indie-rock band E.R.I.E. releases their sophomore album Suburban Mayhem on April 7th via Mint 400 Records. Citing diverse influences such as Blink 182, Tom Petty, and The Menzingers; E.R.I.E. has traded in the internalized existential struggle of debut Don't Wanna Live, Don't Wanna Die, to take on the myriad forces that permeate a modern existence. Single “Bad Man's World” presents a tongue-in-cheek evaluation of fitting into a stereotypical idea of “manhood,” without turning into chauvinistic asshole. In addition to their album release show in Albany on April 7th, E.R.I.E. has upcoming shows in Metro NY, Connecticut, Philadelphia, and more! Ep. 211: Wizo w/ Axel Kurth

WIZO played their first show way back in 1987 and released their first EP in 1990. They've went on to become Germany's second biggest all-time punk band (second only to arena rockers Die Toten Hosen) and have played everywhere from squats to stadiums. Although some of their lyrical content is lighthearted and even comical, WIZO is a band that has a very strong anti-racist/anti-fascist message. Their outspoken liberal politics have caused plenty of scandals and captured national headlines as well as coverage from European TV networks. So much controversy surrounds this band that they've been investigated several times and censored by the German authorities.  Unlike most punk bands, WIZO is very open to outside musical influences and embrace their eclectic sound. A fine example is their cover of Ace of Base's ‘All That She Wants', which became a chart-topping hit in numerous European countries. In the early 90's WIZO played a show with the illustrious NOFX and first caught the attention of Fat Mike. After the NOFX frontman witnessed the unpredictable and entertaining live show that WIZO put on, he knew the German trio could be adored and appreciated outside their homeland's borders. And boy was he right, WIZO have went on to become an international favorite and boast record sales of over 500,000! All independently and without the help of those slimy major labels. I was picking my brain of some obscure Fat bands to interview and Wizo popped into my head. So I message Axel, asked him to come on the show, he said “Sure, thanks for asking”. I got him on the Skype and this is what we chat about. Ep. 210: The Progress w/ Evan Weiss

The Progress were an indie rock band from Cherry Hill, NJ and existed from 2001 to 2008. They were four grade school friends who learned how to play music (and their instruments) together. In their lifespan, they wrote two EP's and a LP. They spent the majority of their time as a band winning the hearts of girls in their 20's and getting booked on metal shows that didn't make any sense playing. Live and learn. Their singer Evan went on to start his own project Into It. Over It. while living in Chicago, IL. He also plays in Their / They're / There and Pet Symmetry. There's a funny story on how this interview happened but you'll have to listen to hear what that was. So I got Evan on the Skype and this is what we chat about: His Patreon for his record label Finding The NJPP archive Releasing Merit on vinyl Lobster Records Negative Progression Records Starting Into It.
