*FULL STORY SPOILERS THROUGHOUT* Bob Nanna (Braid, Hey Mercedes, The City on Film, Lifted Bells) joins Andy and Ethan today to talk Tony Scott's extremely stylized and incredibly phosphorescent Man on Fire. We got to ask Bob all about his writing process, what it was like for Braid to come off hiatus in 2011, and how Best Friends Fest will be the greatest music festival of all time. Also, let us set the record straight once and for all: Bob Nanna, born and raised in Chicago, doesn't have hard opinions on deep dish or regular pizza. In his own words, he "just likes pizza". Inflammatory, we know, but we are here to report the facts. Intro Song: "The Welcoming" by 2 Mello off Atmospheric Horror Music, Vol 2 (check it out here!)

Today on the podcast are the members of Braid talking about their 25th Anniversary and tour for Frame & Canvas. I thought it'd be funny to interview them in order asking similar questions about the album, their feelings on resisting this record, the remixing of the album from J Robbins, and touring. What's amazing is everyone gave different answers and memories. Plus, the secret gem of the episode is worth listening through the whole thing I promise you. I had each person describe the other band members in one word. The answers they give are insightful, sweet, and hilarious. First up is Todd Bell, then Bob Nanna, Chris Broach, then finishing up with Damon Atkinson. What's amazing listening back to these interviews is how different everyone is but how they need a vote of 4 to decide anything as Braid. They're back, ready to rock again. Lastly, please stay for Damon's stories which had me laughing and a great set closer to the episodes. We hadn't spoken before for the pod, so we had a little extra time to chat. This was an absolute blast to do and put together. Thanks to Polyvinyl, Tito and the dudes for being game to have some fun.

Whether you hailed from Gainesville, Grand Forks or Green Bay in the late 90's, it wasn't rare to hear criss-crossing vocal shouts, razor-sharp guitars and drums with jazz-like precision, all blasting out of your local VFW hall. That's partly thanks to Braid, four modest Midwesterners who funneled their obsessions with Fugazi, Jawbox and Gauge through a roulette wheel of glorious rhythmic shifts and six-string swan dives. During their original run, the quartet were known to be workhorses, releasing new songs as immediately as they wrote them, and putting thousands of tour miles on the odometer. The culmination of these efforts took the shape of Frame & Canvas, their third album, released in 1998. Recorded and mixed in just five days, it became much more than a benchmark for Braid's then brethren; these twelve tracks grew to influence each punk rock generation (and variation) that followed, with Rolling Stone even listing it as one of the top five emo albums of all-time. On today's show, returning guests Bob Nanna (vocalist/guitarist), J. Robbins (engineer/producer) and Polyvinyl Records co-founder Matt Lunsford discuss the album sessions and original release, as well as the new 25th anniversary remix and remaster, along with mastering engineer Dan Coutant of Sun Room Audio. Thick Records was formed in 1994 by Detroit native Zak Einstein, who started the label when he relocated to Chicago after graduating from Michigan State University. Early releases include albums from Chicago ska-punkers The Blue Meanies, Alton, IL's Judge Nothing, Seattle's grunge rockers Truly, and the Omaha-based Commander Venus. Blue Meanies singer Billy Spunke joined Einstein and signed multiple Chicago punk rock artists including The Tossers, The Arrivals, and The Methadones. Thick released picture disc vinyl including 7" records from Alkaline Trio, At The Drive-in, ALL, and Citizen Fish. The label also released several compilations documenting Chicago rock and punk music. The compilations included 2000's Magnetic Curses: A Chicago Punk Rock Compilation, which included music from Gaza Strippers, Alkaline Trio, and Pegboy. Oil: Chicago Punk Refined, a 2003 release from the label, included tracks from nineteen Chicago-area punk acts, including Rise Against, The Lawrence Arms, The Tossers, Plain White T's, Bob Nanna, and Local H.  In 2004 Einstein moved the label to Los Angeles. The last label releases came in 2007 with CDs from The Brokedowns and Seven Storey Mountain. Thank you Monika Ebly for the intro to Zak who I got on the Skype and this is what we chat about. Listeners all over the world know Bob Nanna as the voice of Braid (one of the most influential emo bands of all time), as well as celebrated projects like Hey Mercedes and The City On Film. Long before he was making a name for himself with those bands, Nanna was a drummer who was keeping time for lesser-known suburban Chicago outfits like Slaphappy and Friction. Recently, My First Band host Tyler Maas spoke to Nanna about the unconventional recording process for his new solo album, Celebration States, and how he's both staying creative and keeping busy in isolation. Over the course of the roughly 80-minute conversation, the emo icon also talked about his pre-Braid projects, the highs and lows of Braid and Hey Mercedes, the wealth of other musical endeavors that came after those seminal bands, and the process of building a network of musicians for his Downwrite custom song business. Along the way, Maas also accidentally referred to Michael Cassady as "Neil Cassady" and Nanna talked about playing a recent socially distant backyard show to an audience of seven people. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. The result was Hey Mercedes - but the change in sound was likely thanks to Vagrant records. While there are a couple of stand-out tunes on their debut Everynight Fire Works, we conclude along with many of the critics that this album is largely forgettable. But if you're looking to scratch that emo-pop nostalgic itch like we are right now - this album will do just that, even if only for a few minutes. When I look back on my life and what albums had an immediate impact on me from the 90s, one jumps out that I felt never got their due. The band was M.I.J and the singer of that band, Jeff Hanson. Jeff tragically died in 2009 and left a wealth of material from three solo albums on Kill Rock Stars to an album and EP on the legendary Caulfield Records. I wanted to find a couple of folks to talk about Jeff and his life, stories, and legacy. Speaking about Jeff in this episode is Bob Nanna from Braid, Hey Mercedes, and many other bands, plus Bernie McGinn who put out the full length, “The Radio Goodnight” and an EP. They speak eloquently about Jeff and you’ll find out more about music but also his humor. If this perks your interest, I’ve linked a bunch of articles and content on Washed Up Emo to continue your dive into Jeff’s music. You can also go to JeffHanson.net. This is by no means a complete history and I urge you to dig into Jeff and his life to learn more. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)

This week's guest is Bob Nanna from Braid and Hey Mercedes and we're talking about, arguably, one of the most beautiful cities in the world... Paris. Bob's vegetarian, so we'll get to know some of his favorite veggie forward and vegan spots in Paris. We also get an idea of what it was like touring through the mid-90's and early 2000's. A time when your food in each city was only as good as your local friend or venue staff recommendations. If you have any food recommendations or stories about playing Paris that you'd like to share, send them over to foodontourguys@gmail.com and I'll share those at the end of upcoming episodes. Chapter 133: "1998 Looked Great" ...as read by Bob Nanna, Chris Broach, Todd Bell, Damon Atkinson, Chris Bickert, Matt Lunsford and J Robbins (whew!) If you know this show then you probably know that Bryan and I are Braid fans. (That's Bob singing the theme song at the end.) Well back on April 7th, 1998 Braid had an album released on Polyvinyl Records called "Frame And Canvas". This is an important album to me and quite a few people, seeing on how this makes the top indie/emo albums of all time list again and again. I was able to assemble all four members of Braid, their roadie Bicks, Matt Lunsford (head of Polyvinyl) and J Robbins of Jawbox (produced and mixed) all together under one podcast roof to discuss this album. I hope you enjoy this. And again, this would not have been glued together without the wizardry of Bryan Patton. Thanks to everyone involved. If you like this, hang in there. There were lots of leftovers from this huge seven-course meal. https://www.facebook.com/braidcentral/ Chapter 133 Music: Every song from Frame And Canvas. Duh. Jamie Holmes is a self-made man. Jamie has been a cornerstone in the punk and indie Lehigh Valley PA scene as the owner of Double Decker Records. Double Decker started back in 96 and still going strong. Listen to how Jamie had do duck and weave his way to remain relevant for almost twenty years. There is so much to know, but it remains the same as every other story: the most important tool is flexibility. Jamie knows what he's doing. Then we are joined by his associates Ray Gurz and Chris Bickert. Ray is the leader of the band Tile as well as another called Bad American. (I shoved a Tile song in here for you somewhere...) Chris is not only the nicest guy ever, he's also Braid's tour manager (Don't believe me? Bob Nanna himself said so in Chapter 12.) Plus he brought donuts. These are the people in my neighborhood...in my neighborhood...in my neighborhood...but they're in your neighborhood now, too thanks to the magic of podcasting. Enjoy. (No donuts though...) One more thing: Nate Allen, friend of the show, has a lil' rekkid coming out with his group Nate Allen And The Pac Away Dots. Braid. Hey Mercedes. Two of Trav's favorite bands. The cool thing is you can talk to one Bob Nanna and cover both. First we have a few records to talk about. Then Stephen tells one of those stories that reminds you that it could be embarrassing to go "commando". Bob Nanna tells us about the space between the end of Braid and the beginning of Hey Mercedes and how it went down in Hawaii. Hear about how Hey Mercedes met their tour manager Chris on the Vagrant tour. Bob Nanna was nice enough to open up about a cancer scare, yet how he somehow found the peace to not let it be a scare...plus he got a hat out of it so that's cool. Cancer sucks. We are all getting older every day and there comes a time where we have to make smarter decisions about our health. Drink more water, folks. He reminds us that when you go see a band they didn't just come from their tour bus fully rested...sometimes they didn't even sleep the night before. Remember that. Bob is involved in something pretty special called Downwrite, where you can hire a songwriter to write a customized song just for you. It's a really neat, intimate approach and I recommend the site. Just scroll around and see who's involved. Bob is covering his top 100 songs (yeah...) all the way up to his favorite song "Chesterfield King" by Jawbreaker. Thanks for listening. We love you.
