Voelz is author of the book "Oregon Search & Rescue: Answering the Call," which covers the state's best-known searchers, high-profile disasters and how both shaped modern search and rescue. The book and podcast cover famous disasters on Mount Hood, how groups such as the Mazama's began Oregon's early search and rescue tradition and even the state's biggest political crisis.

By popular demand, the 15-Minute History team is re-airing one of our most popular episodes. This originally aired on April 8th, 2019. New episode next Monday, March 2nd. ____The name “Enterprise” is not exclusive to fictional starships or the space shuttle; in fact, nineteen ships of the British Royal Navy and nine of the United States Navy have born the name (spelled either with an S or a Z). Undoubtedly, the most famous USS Enterprise is the World War Two-era aircraft carrier, which fought in more battles in the Pacific War than any other vessel, earned twenty battle stars, and is today the most decorated ship in American naval history. “The Big E,” (first of her many nicknames) was commissioned in May 1938 and attached to the Atlantic fleet for her first year of service. As tensions rose with Japan and the Navy Department realized the importance of aircraft carriers in the Pacific, the Enterprise was transferred to the Pacific Fleet and based first at San Diego and then at Pearl Harbor.Join us as we teach you about the most decorated ship in the history of the US Navy, the USS Enterprise. We talk about her history, engagements, and why she was called, The Grey Ghost. When it comes to the United States Navy, names carry with them the legends of those ships which came before, and history will surely not forget the name Enterprise.

Life keeps lifeing—and sometimes you need a reminder that pauses don't mean you're failing, and hard seasons don't get to decide your worth. This week I'm sharing one of my favorite conversations with Ashlyn Thompson, co-founder of Parent Empowerment Network. Ashlyn is one of those rare humans who can hold heavy things without making them heavier—and somehow still make you laugh, breathe deeper, and feel less alone. We talk about: Why asking "why me?" keeps you stuck (and what to ask instead) The expansion and contraction of life—and why rest isn't something you have to earn Why the opposite of anxiety isn't calm... it's creativity How to stop shrinking your world when life feels overwhelming The difference between being victimized and victim mentality Why your emotions deserve space before your logic gets a turn If you're in a season where you're just trying to keep your head above water, this one's for you. And if you needed permission to breathe, consider it granted. Your story is personal, but pain is not personal." "Doubt doesn't mean you're done. Taking a pause doesn't mean you're stopping forever. You can't just exhale forever—you eventually have to breathe in." "The opposite of anxiety is not calm. It's creativity." "If you ask yourself 'why does this feel painful?'—consider pain as a potential teacher, as a professor, rather than pain as an enemy or destroyer." "Your emotions never lie to you. Logic is not loud—our emotions are loud, and they get louder the more we push them back." "Every emotion your child experiences is not a direct reflection of who you are as a parent." REFLECTION QUESTIONS Take these with you this week: What's one "why" question you keep circling that isn't giving you anything back? What would happen if you swapped it for a "how" or "what" question instead? Where are you asking yourself to "expand" right now when you actually need to "inhale"? What's one tiny creative action you could take this week that would help your body feel like it has somewhere to put the feeling? If you're the unicorn in a power suit (or a perfectly neutral sweater), building a life that looks "right" on paper but still craving something freer and more alive — you're in the right place. Hosted by therapist and author Danielle Ireland, this show feels like sitting on the couch with your best friend — if your best friend happened to be a therapist. Together, we untangle burnout, anxiety, pressure, and comparison, and learn how to turn emotions into allies instead of obstacles. Episode 014 begins with an uplifting and organic atmosphere, blending Saxophone House and Piano House to establish a bright, melodic foundation. The set develops through a sophisticated selection of Deep House and Soulful House, where lush chord progressions and soulful vocal layers create a steady, rhythmic pulse. This mid-section maintains a refined energy, leaning into Nu Disco and Melodic House to balance underground textures with accessible grooves. The journey then settles into a groove-heavy segment defined by 90s-inspired New York style Tech House. This section is all about the vocal-driven tracks and classic, syncopated arrangements that maintain a consistent, soulful momentum, featuring some of my original tracks and bootlegs. ⚡️Like the Show? Listen to the tariffs argument held by the U.S. Supreme Court in November of 2025 when you have a couple of hours to listen to long form content, such as your favorite podcasts.I am reposting the argument today because of the Breaking News that the Supreme Court has reached a decision. After considering the arguments of counsel and the law, today a majority of the Justices on the U.S. Supreme Court reportedly struck down the tariffs in a ruling. The Presidential administration has reportedly responded that it will seek to apply tariffs under other legal authorities, so stay tuned for more news on whether tariffs will continue to be imposed, in light of the ruling.I am not sure when the ruling was handed down. I happened to be on LinkedIn around 11:00 am or so, when the press started reporting that a ruling had been handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court.I always find it interesting when an important ruling is handed down on a Friday morning. Often markets are open and trading shifts in real time, in response to the ruling. This is not inevitable. It's possible to release significant rulings, or reports, in a way that doesn't kick off an immediate reaction, like imagine that today's tariff news came out after close of business. On the other hand, with a Friday release of an important ruling there is a chance to triage over the weekend and stabilize markets.I don't know why… I am reminded of the handling of the Mueller report, over a weekend, where there was somewhat of a catch and kill, helpful to the President. I suppose this leads to the observation you really never know how a response to the Supreme Court tariff ruling can play out, much as the tariff ruling seems momentous.Making things more interesting in the current market conditions is that Crypto and other assets trade 24/7, and prices of Bitcoin and other assets that have experienced some volatility of late could respond to the tariff ruling handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court today.—The audio in this post/podcast is the official court audio of the oral argument on tariffs, from the U.S. Supreme Court's website:supremecourt.gov/oral_arguments/audio/2025/24-1287

What if every heartbreak, every failure, every person who showed up and walked away — was actually pointing you toward your purpose? Most of us move through life reacting to what happens — calling it bad luck, calling it unfair, calling it "just the way things are." But what if you zoomed out far enough to see the pattern? The same type of relationship that keeps showing up. The same wall you keep hitting at work. The same feeling that follows you no matter how much you try to outrun it.What if none of it was random — and all of it was trying to teach you something? In this episode, Raj introduces a simple but powerful idea: your life has a purpose, and that purpose is hidden inside the very experiences you wish never happened. He breaks it down into two layers — the lessons you're here to heal from and the life you're here to step into — and explains why most people stay stuck in the first layer without ever realizing there's a second one waiting for them. What You'll Discover:Why the same painful patterns keep repeating in your life — and what they're actually trying to show you about your deeper purposeThe difference between the wounds you're here to heal and the life you're here to build — and why understanding both is the key to finally moving forwardWhy "just the way I am" is the most expensive belief you'll ever carry — and the mindset shift that puts your life back in your handsThe moment Raj realized that pain is inevitable but suffering is a choice — and the simple distinction that changed everythingHow to use your past as a map — a reflection practice that helps you connect the dots and see the deeper intelligence behind what you've been throughWhy trusting yourself enough to try something new — even without a guarantee — is the real work most personal growth skips overThe reason your life might feel like it's falling apart right now — and why that breakdown could be the setup for the version of you that's trying to emergeHow to stop waiting for permission, clarity, or the "right time" and start walking toward the life that's been calling you all alongIf you've ever felt like there has to be more to life than what you're experiencing — like there's a reason behind the struggle that you just can't see yet — this episode will help you see it. In case you missed the last episode, my big news is that I relocated to Brooklyn for the next few months. My fingers are numb as I write this, but I do love it. Also, I'm capping off my book tour on February 19th at Patagonia SoHo. If you're in town, I would love to meet you in person. You can RSVP here. Okay, what else? Right, the latest podcast. You see, I'm an informational grazer, nibbling on bits of media here and there but rarely sitting with a concept long enough to fully digest it. I'm trying to change that in 2026. One habit I've adopted is simply journaling about a book I'm reading for a few minutes. What did I learn? Journal one page. Done. I find this is helping the cement dry. Another is listening back to podcasts I've already recorded, including this one with Derek Sivers. Ahem, onto the bio: An author of philosophy and entrepreneurship, Sivers is known for his surprising quotable insights, pithy succinct writing style, and commitment to minimalism. (He currently lives in a 4x8 meter house in New Zealand and is building it out slowly, room by room, just to see what he needs.) Formerly a musician, programmer, TED speaker, and circus clown, he sold his first company for $22 million and gave all the money to charity. Sivers' books (Useful, Not True, How to Live, Hell Yeah or No, Your Music and People, Anything You Want) and newest projects are at his website: sive.rs. He loves hearing from strangers and will reply to every email, so if you enjoyed this podcast, shoot him an email and let him know.If you dig this podcast, will you please leave a short review on Apple Podcasts? It takes less than 60 seconds and makes a difference when I drop to my knees and beg hard-to-get guests on the show. I read them all. Your Core Self-Care Need - Repost

Most people have one or two core self-care needs that, if they're met, everything else feels easier. This episode is about how to figure out yours... and what to look out for when you hear people preaching about their own! There's also acknowledgment that your neurodivergent body and brain may process things in different ways, so the following questions may not be that useful for you.Figuring out your core self-care need or needs (just a jumping-off point!): Thinking back to times in your life when things felt the easiest, what was your life like? Which of your needs were being met fairly well? When life has been a bit easier or better, did you notice any particular ups and downs based on particular needs being met? For example, if you were overall feeling pretty good compared to your baseline, was there anything that particularly threw you off? Or something that could bring you back to that feeling better pretty quickly?Tuning into your body right now, is there anything your body is asking for? This won't necessarily be a core need, it's more a check-in to see what messages your body is already good at giving you.Thinking about the past few days, weeks, or months, are there any messages your body has been consistently giving you? For example, when you've felt tired, does it feel more like you need sleep, or more like you need food, or more like you need to be around another person to recharge? Again, this isn't a perfect metric, just noticing how your body talks to you.Is there any form of self-care that feels like it REALLY fixes a bad day?Resources mentioned: Takedown of Why We Sleep: https://guzey.com/books/why-we-sleep/Commentary on the above post: https://statmodeling.stat.columbia.edu/2019/11/18/is-matthew-walkers-why-we-sleep-riddled-with-scientific-and-factual-errors/Transcript DocAnd one more link someone sent taking down the book Why We Sleep (I haven't listened to this episode but the links alone look great): https://open.spotify.com/episode/4r0Vawq8xAfnsnKbYVUNhc?si=n7t-koeuS2GXQ2QnA8j4dQAuDHD Flourishing resources:Transcript Doc Mattia's NewsletterLike Your Brain community space (Patreon/Discord)Repost of ep 11, originally published Aug 18 2023 Hosted on Acast.
