Today's episode in Politics on Trial is about the most famous trial in literature and one that never actually takes place. David talks to writer and literary scholar Ian Ellison about Franz Kafka's The Trial, first published in 1925. What is the meaning of a book about a legal process that never happens? How was it inspired by Kafka's failed love life? Why has it given rise to so many different understandings of what makes our world Kafkaesque? And how did a work of fiction that is full of weird and wonderful ideas get associated with mindless bureaucracy? If you'd like to get tickets for the first screening in our autumn film season at the Regent Street Cinema in London on 5th September – Alfred Hitchcock's Rope, followed by a live recording of PPF with the crime writers Nicci Gerard and Sean French – they are available now https://www.ppfideas.com/events Coming Next: a PPF+ Highlights Special Learn more about your ad choices. That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
By listener request, Nick dives deep into the bizarre and brilliant world of Colleen Rafferty, one of Kate McKinnon's most unforgettable Saturday Night Live characters. Whether she's being abducted by aliens, haunted by ghosts, or hurled through time, Colleen's wildly unglamorous take on supernatural events is always hilarious—and McKinnon's commitment to the role has left both the audience and her fellow cast members in stitches. Nick revisits standout sketches, including the infamous Ryan Gosling episodes (where he breaks every time), plus appearances with Casey Affleck, Natasha Lyonne, and a star-studded take from the SNL 50th Anniversary Special featuring Pedro Pascal, Jon Hamm, Woody Harrelson, and Meryl Streep as Colleen's mom. A filthy, funny, fan-favorite tribute to a true SNL legend. [Ep 137]

Season 18, Episode 26: It is true: The Final Word has turned 10. Technically our first episode was released on July 23, 2015, but July 23 this year was in the middle of a rather busy Test match and Test series, so we thought we'd wait for a quieter moment. It's a good chance to sit and take stock of what has happened, as a quiet side project done for the fun of it has become such a big part of our lives. Adam and Geoff catch up for a look back, before we dust off our rarest archival find: the pilot episode that we recorded a couple of weeks before that first episode was published, as proof of concept, when our old friends and colleagues Vithushan Ehantharajah and Will Macpherson were young friends and colleagues, and we all gathered for a preview chat before the 2015 Ashes. This was never published, beyond a handful of people hearing it on Soundcloud, but it's been remastered and is finally ready for its close-up. It's funny to listen back all that way.; time travel does exist. Thanks for coming along with us on whatever parts of that trip you've joined. Welcome to a special episode of the BYC on a significant day… Twenty years ago today – June 25th, 2005 – a group of tragic cricket fans in Wellington, dressed head-to-toe in Beige Brigade kit, gathered around some crude recording gear and hit record on what would become New Zealand’s first-ever sports podcast… The BYC. It was the heyday of The Ricky Gervais Podcast with Ricky, Stephen Merchant, and Karl Pilkington. The term “podcast” had only just been coined by a Guardian columnist the year before. Born out of the Beige Brigade fan movement formed in 1999, the BYC is now comfortably New Zealand’s longest-running podcast series, sports or otherwise. On a cold, wet Wellington evening in June 2005, New Zealand’s version of Gervais, Merchant, and Pilkington — Paul Ford, Kevin Sinnott, and Jason Willis — recorded the first official BYC episode, backed by resident crooner Blair Sayer.Join ACC Head G Lane joins Dylan Cleaver and Paul Ford for a trip down memory lane! Today's episode is about a pivotal event in British history that took place exactly 50 years ago: the 1975 referendum on Britain's membership of the European Community. David talks to historian Robert Saunders about why it was so different in so many ways from the Brexit referendum in 2016. Why in 1975 were Labour and the SNP the Eurosceptic parties? What made the Tories pro-European? Where was immigration as an election issue? How did the Yes campaign overturn a big deficit in the polls? Plus: why didn't it settle the question, so that another referendum had to be held four decades later? Available tomorrow on PPF+: Part 2 of this conversation in which David and Robert try to make sense of the many differences between the 1975 and 2016 referendums as well as exploring where Britain stands in relation to Europe in 2025.
