In honor of my 40th anniversary with WGTD (my first day at the station was May 27, 1986), I'm replaying some noteworthy Morning Show interviews from the past. This interview with Oscar and Tony Award-winning actor Alan Arkin is one of the richest conversations I ever had with someone from the world of entertainment. The occasion of this interview was the publication of his memoir "Alan Arkin: An Improvised Life" in 2011.

In honor of my 40th anniversary at WGTD (my first day with the station was May 27, 1986) I have been replaying some noteworthy Morning Show interviews from the past. For this seventh and final day in this special series, I have chosen this interview from 2002 with Richard Blow, former editor of GEORGE magazine and a friend of John F. Kennedy Jr. Blow's book "American Son" is an illuminating portrait of JFK Jr. from someone who knew him well and also worked side by side with him. At one point during the interview, Blow paid me a rather lavish compliment- and that was a powerful moment for me because it gave me a new sense of confidence about doing this challenging work. I've received a few more compliments in the years since, but this one is the sweetest of all because it was the first.

This interview aired in 2006 to celebrate my 20th anniversary with the station. It was the idea of Mick Burke, who then was a reporter with the Racine Journal Times as well as a faithful Morning Show listener, for him to come to our studios and interview me about my work at the station. This is most of the interview. (I hope at some point I can track down the rest of it so the interview can be shared in its entirety.). I thank Mick Burke for coming up with the idea to do the interview and for doing such a good job with it.

Today we remember original SNL writer, Anne Beatts. Coming to Saturday Night Live by way of The National Lampoon, she was both a vital voice and powerful force in the early formative years of the show.Not only did Anne create the iconic "Nerds," she also contributed to such memorable characters and sketches as Irwin Mainway, Uncle Roy, and "Hard Hats." Her voice was also showcased on commercial parodies like "Jewess Jeans," "Angora Bouquet," and "Chanel."Fellow original SNL writer Rosie Shuster returns to the podcast to help us look back to remember not only Anne Beatts the writer, but also the person. As the only two female writers when the show began, Anne and Rosie were paired together from the very beginning—forming a partnership that would last throughout the original era.Rosie recounts her time with Anne from their hilarious first meeting to late night writing sessions and pulling off iconic moments like the very first Roseanne Roseannadanna as well as discussing how Anne's work on the show's pre-tapes helped pave the way for the rest of her career. For our 150th episode, Greg Jenner is joined by historian Professor Iwan Morus and comedian Catherine Bohart to learn about the history of the telephone on its 150th anniversary. The inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell, was granted the American patent for his new communication system 150 years ago, on the 7th March 1876, beating out fellow inventor Elisha Gray who had submitted his patent on the very same day. But Bell still had to convince people that this novel form of communication would change their lives, and so he set out on a promotional tour across America and England, showcasing the wonder of his new invention, and even gifting a pair of phones to Queen Victoria. In this episode, we look at the first few decades of the telephone's existence: the dramatic race between Bell, Gray and an Italian immigrant named Meucci to be the first to patent it, how quickly it was rolled out across America, how the technology actually worked, and its problems, including the ease with which people could eavesdrop on their neighbour's conversations. We also look at the rise in jobs for women it provided, and the social anxieties it provoked, which mirror many of the worries voiced today about smartphones and social media. And we examine some early telephone etiquette: should you answer the phone with ‘hello' or ‘ahoy-hoy', and did a man need to be wearing trousers when speaking on the phone to a woman?
