Ten years ago, on October 26, 2015, something special began in Japan. While working at the University of Tokyo, I launched the first episode of the FreshEd podcast, marking the start of what would become a cornerstone of conversations in comparative and international education. Over the past decade, FreshEd has grown into a global platform – far larger than I ever imaged -- connecting listeners interested in education, equity, and social change. We've made over 400 episodes in that time. We've counted 200 universities that use our content and we have listeners, like you, in over 180 countries. To celebrate our anniversary, we held a live event at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan as part of the 2025 International Education Development Forum. I've like to thank Dr. Jing Liu for co-organizing this event. Joining me on stage were Professors Iveta Silova and Yuto Kitamura, who are both board members of FreshEd. In our conversation, we take you behind the scenes of FreshEd's development and reflect on what the podcast means for the wider field specifically and higher education generally. On a personal note, Iveta and Yuto are both mentors who have shaped my own career as an academic. So today we'll air the conversation we had in Tohoku on October 18. I hope you enjoy the show and here's to the second decade of FreshEd. https://freshedpodcast.com/10years/ -- Get in touch! Twitter: @FreshEdpodcast Facebook: FreshEd Email: info@freshedpodcast.com
Tonight is a very special GeekNights. This is our 20th anniversary stream. GeekNights began on October 31 2005 and has continued for 20 years with no real breaks. We did a series of "beta" episodes even earlier to work out the show format and learn how to podcast. We've done 317 talks at conventions. We had a massive forum which we replaced with a smaller forum. This Halloween marks 10 years of stories from Rod and Steve; to mark the holiday and our tenth anniversary, we're going to take you deep into the dark side of Appalachia with two chilling tales from southwest Virginia. First, Steve tells the story of three strange sisters who ran girls' schools in Murfreesboro and Christiansburg—women whispered to be linked to evil spirits and who eventually faced justice for a terrible crime. Some say their spirits still haunt the ground where their school stood in Christiansburg over a hundred years ago. Then, Rod shares the legend of two cunning sisters from Scott County, whose greed and cruelty led to a savage end. Their ghosts are said to still haunt the cemetery where they were denied burial.Be sure to subscribe for more Stories of Appalachia.Happy Halloween, y'all!

Maniac Mansion was a sitcom that aired on The Family Channel from 1990 to 1993. The show was created by Eugene Levy and produced by George Lucas's Lucasfilm Television. Loosely based on the cult-favorite 1987 video game of the same name. While the series took its name from the cult video game, the show used little to none of the source material, opting instead for a domestic sitcom laced with surreal, science-fiction twists. The premise centered on Dr. Fred Edison (Joe Flaherty), a well-meaning scientist whose home experiments often created bizarre predicaments for his family. The mix of conventional family humor and absurdist elements gave the show a tone that was equal parts sitcom, parody, and sketch comedy. Critics and audiences received Maniac Mansion with curiosity but mixed feelings. Fans of the video game were surprised by the lighter, kid-friendly direction, while TV reviewers highlighted its eccentric humor and offbeat charm from the show's SCTV roots. Though it never broke through as a mainstream hit, the series gained a modest cult following. Is this this show going to be more Spooky or Dookie with the boys? Listen as they deep dive the show's pilot episode, "The 10th Anniversary Special" and find out. This special 5th anniversary episode of the Remarkable Retail podcast marks a milestone: five years of insights, disruption, and conversations with the world's most innovative retail thinkers. We reflect on the pod's origin story during the early COVID lockdowns, tracing its evolution from Steve's book Remarkable Retail: How to Win & Keep Customers in the Age of Disruption into an industry-leading show featuring CEOs, founders, and thought leaders shaping global commerce. They share highlights from an impressive guest roster, including Scott Galloway (whose episode remains the most downloaded in the show's history), Artemis Patrick of Sephora, Hal Lawton of Tractor Supply, Chris Nicholas of Sam's Club, Joe Kudla of Vuori, and Neil Blumenthal of Warby Parker. Each clip showcases the powerful themes of customer centricity, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of remarkability. The centerpiece of the episode is a deep and engaging conversation with Seth Godin, returning for his sixth visit. Seth—bestselling author of classics including Purple Cow—first inspired the very language of “remarkability” in Steve's book and the podcast itself. Here, Seth reflects on why being remarkable matters more than ever in an era where “average is dead.” He warns leaders that chasing efficiency or “suck less” strategies won't suffice; brands must create conditions where customers want to talk about them. He draws a sharp distinction between simply being “better” through incremental improvements and being truly remarkable in ways that spark conversation, loyalty, and cultural resonance.Seth also delves into the impact of AI as the biggest societal shift since electricity. Rather than reducing costs by outsourcing tasks, he urges retailers to harness AI to enable new projects and creative possibilities. He illustrates this with his latest Kickstarter project—AI-driven card decks designed to spark learning, decision-making, and storytelling. For Seth, experimentation and accessible tools are the gateway to innovation, and he emphasizes that risk-taking in the AI era costs little but delivers exponential learning.Together, Michael, Steve, and Seth explore enduring themes: knowing who it's for and what it's for, the value of continuous improvement, and why shunning non-believers is essential to staying authentic. About UsSteve Dennis is a strategic advisor and keynote speaker focused on growth and innovation, who has also been named one of the world's top retail influencers. He is the bestselling authro of two books: Leaders Leap: Transforming Your Company at the Speed of Disruption and Remarkable Retail: How To Win & Keep Customers in the Age of Disruption. Steve regularly shares his insights in his role as a Forbes senior retail contributor and on social media.Michael LeBlanc is the president and founder of M.E. LeBlanc & Company Inc, a senior retail advisor, keynote speaker and now, media entrepreneur. He has been on the front lines of retail industry change for his entire career. He brings 25+ years of brand/retail/marketing & eCommerce leadership experience with Levi's, Black & Decker, Hudson's Bay, CanWest Media, Pandora Jewellery, The Shopping Channel and Retail Council of Canada to his advisory, speaking and media practice.Michael produces and hosts a network of leading retail trade podcasts, including the award-winning No.1 independent retail industry podcast in America, Remarkable Retail with his partner, Dallas-based best-selling author Steve Dennis; Canada's top retail industry podcast The Voice of Retail and Canada's top food industry and one of the top Canadian-produced management independent podcasts in the country, The Food Professor with Dr. Sylvain Charlebois from Dalhousie University in Halifax.Rethink Retail has recognized Michael as one of the top global retail experts for the fourth year in a row, Thinkers 360 has named him on of the Top 50 global thought leaders in retail, RTIH has named him a top 100 global though leader in retail technology and Coresight Research has named Michael a Retail AI Influencer. If you are a BBQ fan, you can tune into Michael's cooking show, Last Request BBQ, on YouTube, Instagram, X and yes, TikTok.Michael is available for keynote presentations helping retailers, brands and retail industry insiders explaining the current state and future of the retail industry in North America and around the world.

Jaguar Enthusiast Magazine has teamed up with our heritage partners, The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, to track the human stories behind one of Jaguar's best-selling model ranges that was in production for nearly a quarter of a century!Launched in 1975 as the successor to the legendary E-type, the XJS celebrates 50 years this year. So, buckle up — we're going to explore the highs, lows, and lasting impact of Jaguar's misunderstood masterpiece: the XJS.On this episode, we speak to Barrie Thrussell. He arrived at Jaguar from Morris, where he reached the Global Aftersales Director position before leaving to take on other responsibilities. He then returned to the UK Operations Director role under Nick Scheele. From proving-ground tests to fine-tuning the car's refinement and handling, Barrie was at the heart of the engineering effort that turned Jaguar's bold grand tourer into a production reality and ensured its ongoing quality development when in production, as well as educating the dealerships on what the model offered at that time. As we mark 50 years of the XJ-S, Barrie joins us to share his stories from inside Jaguar during one of its most fascinating eras.

So, buckle up — we're going to explore the highs, lows, and lasting impact of Jaguar's misunderstood masterpiece: the XJS.Allan Scott is best known as the Manager of the Engine Division at Tom Walkinshaw Racing — TWR — during the golden era of the 1980s and early 1990s. Originally hailing from New Zealand, Allan trained as an engineer before moving to the UK, where he became deeply involved in engine development for racing and road-going performance programs. At TWR, Allan led the team responsible for turning Jaguar's V12 into a world-beating powerplant. Under his guidance, the XJ-S's engine evolved into a championship-winning force in European touring car racing, and later, into the endurance-dominating heart of the legendary Group C Jaguars — machines that conquered Daytona, Le Mans, and tracks across the globe. As we mark the 50th anniversary of the Jaguar XJ-S, it's an honour to have Allan with us to reflect on his experiences — from the workshop floor to the winner's podium — and to hear first-hand what it took to transform Jaguar's engines into icons.

Early clay models were labelled F-TYPE, and there was great hope for a world-class vehicle to serve as the E-type's spiritual successor. That led to the XJS facelift project for Nick, and we hope to hear more from him about that in the future.Nick also worked at TWR, where he was involved in bringing the fabulous XJ220 design to production.Alongside his design career, Nick became an educator and writer, documenting the history of automotive design with clarity and passion. His acclaimed book Jaguar Design: A Story of Style is considered a definitive account of how Jaguar has blended engineering and artistry across decades, from the earliest saloons to the most modern sports cars.Nick brings not only professional expertise but also an insider's understanding of the challenges and triumphs that shaped Jaguar's design DNA. His insights into the XJ-S help us understand how design decisions of the past continue to influence the cars we celebrate today. As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Jaguar XJ-S, it's a privilege to welcome Nick Hull to explore how design shaped Jaguar's identity and what the XJ-S truly means in the wider story of the marque.

In this special edition of Born to Watch, the team dives back into the deep blue to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's iconic 1975 thriller, Jaws. But this isn't just a rewatch, it's a cinematic pilgrimage. Hosts Whitey and Dan welcome special guest Paul Glasby to revisit the film not just in spirit, but in spectacle, attending a screening at Hoyts Tweed City, experiencing this Jaws 50th Anniversary Review on the big screen with recliners, giant Pepsi Maxes, and a crew of unsuspecting newcomers. This episode is more than just a review; it's a tribute. For Whitey, who's marking his own 50th birthday, Jaws isn't just a classic; it's a defining piece of his movie-loving DNA, neck-and-neck with Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back as his all-time favourite. The team reminisces about the first time they saw the film, how it scarred them from surfing, and the strange magic that Jaws still holds over an audience, even half a century later.Dan, making his debut on a Jaws episode, brings the perspective of a cinema recluse, someone more used to fields and chickens than Dolby sound and John Williams scores. But even he's swept up by the grandeur of the theatrical experience. Paul, a returning guest and self-proclaimed booster-seat podcaster, shares a British kid's perspective on Jaws' TV legacy, recalling its 3D TV gimmicks and how the film once ruled Saturday night telly. But seeing it on the big screen? That's another beast entirely.Throughout the episode, the guys reflect on Spielberg's breakout masterpiece, how a 27-year-old director, working with malfunctioning mechanical sharks and intense studio pressure, managed to craft a film that changed cinema forever. There's plenty of love for the gritty film stock, practical effects, and Spielberg's decision to show less rather than more. The now-famous story about the shark not working—leading to a suspenseful masterclass in implication over gore—gets its well-deserved praise. They also unpack the movie's unforgettable score, with Paul comparing John Williams' two-note theme to the Rocky IV training montage, so iconic that it shapes the entire experience. For Dan, the real terror lies in the opening scene, all shadows and suggestion. For Whitey, it's the rich character work, Quint's haunted Indianapolis speech, Hooper's dry wit, and Brody's quiet resolve that keep the film swimming in the top tier of cinema history. The episode isn't just nostalgia-heavy; it's a call to arms. Why don't we watch classic films in the cinema more often? Why isn't there a chain of retro movie houses showing Jaws, Alien, The Exorcist, and Boogie Nights on the regular? Dan offers a deeper look into the decline of cinema attendance, post-COVID challenges, and how theatres now survive on mega-drinks and bar-style concessions. But the gang also sees an opportunity: could Born to Watch host monthly screenings of classics? Would audiences come? There's also plenty of fun tangents, dodgy car park stories, oversized soft drinks, generational lines drawn by Paddington in Peru, and roasting fellow podcasters for their Marvel movie hot takes. Expect talk of Spielberg's filmography, the state of modern blockbusters, and whether Top Gun: Maverick or Avengers: Endgame can hold a candle to the cultural typhoon that Jaws was in 1975.In true Born to Watch style, the episode blends deep cinematic appreciation with pub-style banter, bringing in kids' reactions, audience dynamics, and even some surprising praise for Richard Dreyfuss's underrated turn as Hooper. For a film that's been endlessly dissected, this conversation feels fresh, personal, and anchored by genuine love for cinema.Whether you're a longtime fan or a landlocked Gen Z who's never felt the terror of a dorsal fin rising from the surf, this episode is a reminder of why we watch, why we return, and why, 50 years later, Jaws still bites.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs Jaws still the scariest movie ever made—or did the rubber shark finally lose its bite? Should Mayor Vaughn have been eaten first?Would YOU get in the water with Hooper, Brody, and a barrel full of bad ideas?Drop us a voicemail at https://www.borntowatch.com.au and share your Jaws hot takes.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your pods. Today's episode in Politics on Trial is about the most famous trial in literature and one that never actually takes place. David talks to writer and literary scholar Ian Ellison about Franz Kafka's The Trial, first published in 1925. What is the meaning of a book about a legal process that never happens? How was it inspired by Kafka's failed love life? Why has it given rise to so many different understandings of what makes our world Kafkaesque? And how did a work of fiction that is full of weird and wonderful ideas get associated with mindless bureaucracy?
