The olfactory rebel. Los Angeles-based Killian Wells, pop musician turned perfumer turned millennial entrepreneur, represents less a relaxing of the rules of perfumery and more their ripping up. His fragrance house Xyrena pays homage to the retro culture of the 1980s and to the smells we risk losing in the march of modernity. Wells’ first job was a cinema projectionist and this colours the format of the range; each perfume is packaged in a VHS case, with the invitation to display and reminisce over a movie library of scents. Dark Ride, which features in Perfume, is an olfactory snapshot of a log flume ride - Wells’ references are Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean and Splash Mountain rides. Perfume: A Sensory Journey Through Contemporary Scent continues until 23 September at Somerset House. #perfumepioneers #fragrance #exhibition

Disney trivia champion and historian Joseph Titizian joins Team Mousetalgia this week to begin a two-week celebration of Pirates of the Caribbean's 50th anniversary. Join us as we look at the press coverage of the grand opening of Disneyland's Pirates attraction, and then trace the history of the attraction back to its initial roots as a wax museum. Then, we discuss New Orleans Square, and take a look at the Pirates Arcade Museum, the One-of-a-Kind Shop, and Walt's Royal Suite, which has also been utilized as the IPA hospitality suite, Disneyland International, the Disney Gallery, the Dream Suite, and 21 Royal Street. Joseph shares some information about 21 Royal, as well as a spoiler-free review of the exclusive dining experience currently offered at the suite. We also fondly remember Ernie McLean, a one-time fixture in New Orleans Square. Plus - Twenty Eight & Main releases new merch, Funko releases a new Disney Pirates subscription box, Lindberg announces a re-released Pirates model - and more! Also - be sure to tune in next week for part 2 of our Pirates of the Caribbean 50th anniversary celebration. Yo ho!
Number 2 in the series is a beautiful, clean ride-through of Pirates of the Caribbean. We enter as Fantasmic nears its climax on the Rivers of America and we find that Pirates is deserted! There's only 2 other people (other than cast members) in sight and, thankfully, they seemed to enjoy the solitude as much as we do - we didn't hear a peep out of them the whole time.So come along and enjoy a rare audio treat: A binaural ride through Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean, pure and unadulterated by the sound of other guests!Disneyland Short 002 - Pirates of the CaribbeanTo download, right-click and select "Save Target As...".
