Unlearn The Lies
The Power of Storytelling for Mental Health Awareness

How can we create a positive impact and change mental health education and awareness in a world where people think of mental health mostly in pessimistic ways? September is nationally recognized as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Suicide is the leading cause of death among youth ages 10-24, and more often than not, we don't do as much as we can to support children and people with mental health because we just don't want to have the conversations. People don't talk about mental health, only relating it to cases of grief, sorrow, or violence, when the truth is there's much more than that to mental health. It's not one-dimensional; it's not all negative. But that is just how people perceive it because those are the only stories told and shared with the public. So in this episode, we aim to end that stereotype as we focus on the positive vibes. Join us as we talk about mental health in an organic, healthy, and natural way. After all, the stories we hear, read, and learn from are those that create the biggest impact on how we live life. Today, we're joined by Zane Landin, an authentic storyteller and public relations Imagineer, and a recent graduate from Cal Poly Pomona with a Bachelor of Science in Communication and Public Relations. He is the Founder and CEO of PositiveVibes Magazine, a magazine that shares stories about positivity, wellness, and mental health. For so long, he has gone through the challenges of anger and depression, but that did not stop him from acing this life. When it comes to mental health advocacy and really being in the forefront, Zane's out there, doing the work, making sure people have a voice and they are hearing the right stories from the right people.   Show Highlights: (00:00:00) Episode disclaimer, highlight, and introduction (00:01:48) Welcoming today's guest, Zane Landin (00:02:42) If you need that support for your mental health, reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by calling 9-8-8 now. Mental health isn't a one-dimensional thing (00:33:30) How can we use storytelling to create positive change? (00:37:53) What does mental health mean to Zane? For some people, it's helped them realize who they are. It's helped them gain empathy. It's helped them gain new connections. It's helped them gain new families. There are so many things that mental health does for people, and it's not just always a horrible thing that happens to people.” – Zane Landin “The idea that these stories impact our lives so much already shows me that storytelling is really key in changing things and creating awareness.” – Zane Landin “If we only look at mental health as something that's medicinal or something that medicine can treat, we're looking at mental health as a very one-dimensional thing when the mind has so many capabilities. And so, it's all about holistic mental health; your body, your health, your environment, your spirituality, your religion – every single thing impacts your mental health. And medication is not the only thing that's going to address that.” – Zane Landin “We have to be very mindful about the stories we share and tell, because storytelling is not a formula that's going to immediately create positive change. You have to really consider what stories you are telling and how you're telling them.” – Zane Landin   Connect with Zane via the following:  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/zanelandin/ Website: https://positivevibesmag.com/   Unlearn The Lies About Mental Health is Hosted by Abraham Sculley Contact Speaks 2 Inspire to learn about S2I programs: https://speaks2inspire.com/services/. The Hulk, which was previewed and announced to be coming to Avengers Campus, has begun greeting guests in front of the Avengers Headquarters building. Fading SunsFading Suns on The Gauntlet. Lowell Francis trying out the system, and you can tell he's down his prep. I'm playing an Ur-Ukar witch with TK-like abilities. We've taken up a mission from a noble to be his escort and eyes and ears in a hostile system. Fading Suns has pulled at me for some years now; I'm hoping to jump-start my future runs of it by playing it first. At its core, it is a Skill + ability roll under system. This was our session one, and we got a small, easy skirmish under our belt so far.Into the OddIn Dragonslayers, using Into the Odd, I play a reluctant tailor pressed into military service against the dragon empire. The dragons have won, and we're left in the aftermath of many battles. This was mostly session zero, making characters and setting up things. Our first act next session is to free our captured griffin riders and griffins!!Judd also runs games out on StartPlaying.games, and I paid to play his Spelljammer + Into the odd game: Rock of Braal. (I'll have more to say very soon about paying to play and GM-for-hire) I played a warden, one of two survivors off a gith vessel. The other was an Illithid captive. We both took on a bounty from a ghost pirate to recover his stolen goods. Into the Odd is a great system for getting folks in fast and keeping them hooked through the session. I forget I much I LOVE combat mechanics where there is a free & clear declaration step, followed by the dice then reading the outcomes!Rebels of the Outlaw Wastes - Session 01Centered in the apocalypse of Florida, I play an ex-Imagineer, (ex-jackboot in Outlaw parlance) trying to escape my former employer. With the help of an Abe Lincoln animatronic, an Alligator-Man hybrid, and a gothic biker with electricity powers. We flee into the swamp -bogs of Florida chased by Imagineer security on hoverboards!Big thanks to Michael Addison of Nerdy Pup Games for running his new game on Actual Play!Champions Now - Lifted. The KC Defenders get stomped by Protheseus agents during a simple recon of the downtown train yard. The rail house was, in fact, not abandoned or empty. I still get a kick out of agents as hazard rules in Champions Now, especially when player characters try to ignore the agents!Sci-fi West MarchesReading the Gateway saga. Looking to use the premise of an abandoned alien space station and its network of ships and unknown routes as a column in a Sci-Fi West Marches game. Currently hacking BX via OSE to get the play experience I want.Prepping Remember TomorrowAnother Gregor Hutton jam that holds up great n these modern times. It's a cyberpunk RPG, GM-less, but best with a facilitator. You play troupe-style Gibsonesque characters at odds with various factions. What did you play last week?Support the show

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Tania is most famously known as the designer of the iconic purple wallpaper in the Haunted Mansion, but she was originally hired to help with the design and decorating of New Orleans Square, followed by Club 33. As part of her job, she found herself on an epic research trip that took her from the real New Orleans, to some swamp land in Florida long before it was Walt Disney World, and the New York World's Fair. The Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage has set sail again, taking guests on the voyage under the seas to find Nemo. The attraction has been closed for over two and a half years – since before the COVID shutdown and was planned to come back in the winter of 2021, but was extended until this week. Other than the refreshed look and Hank on the surface, not much has been updated. – https://www.ocregister.com/2022/07/21/how-disneyland-refurbished-everything-on-finding-nemo-submarine-voyage/ Guests have two more spots in DCA to take a look at wait times — a definite win for people avoiding using the mobile app. The display screens near Spider-man and Radiator Springs Racers are new wait-time monitors for the park's busy attractions, just like the one by Carthay Circle. – https://www.micechat.com/327870-disneyland-update-submarines-dive-as-passholders-wait-to-resubscribe/ The Main Street Electrical Parade may be set to glow away…again…on September 1, but not before one more celebration. A producer, executive creative director, and Imagineer for over 31 years, Doris Hardoon, has just received the Buzz Price Thea Award recognizing her for “a lifetime of distinguished achievements.” Beginning her themed entertainment career in 1975 at Marine World Africa USA as a graphic designer, Doris was hired four years later by WED Enterprises (now known as Walt Disney Imagineering), working on projects including EPCOT's The Land Pavilion, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris. Hardoon became a senior executive creative director, producer, and creative lead for a varied portfolio of investments, working at some point on all six Magic Kingdom-style Disney parks on three continents. Realizing the “Authentically Disney and Distinctly Chinese” philosophy, Doris lead the successful realization of the Shanghai Disney Resort that opened in 2016. She also served as a creative executive for WestCOT, Long Beach's DisneySea, and Hong Kong Disneyland. Doris recently retired as an Imagineer and continues her work in the themed entertainment industry through her own design company DDesign Consultancy. On the podcast, she shares the cultural significance of her design choices, discusses how she came to be an Imagineer and she reveals hiding the names of some of her cherished teammates in the ironwork of Disneytown.

"How do I become an Imagineer?" Not surprisingly, it's one of the most common questions I'm asked on Imagineer Podcast. As I've continued to interview Walt Disney Imagineers, I've found there's no easy answer to this question, but there are a few pieces of wisdom that can help get you started, whether you want to work with this legendary Disney team as an engineer, artist, architect, programmer, project manager or beyond. In this podcast episode, I compile some of the advice I've received from Imagineers interviewed on the show, including advice from McNair Wilson, Jim Sarno, Bob Gurr, Leslie Iwerks, Russell Brower, Brian Collins, Timmy Britt, Theron Skees, Brian Crosby, Tony Baxter, and more. Whether you're an aspiring Imagineer or just need some career advice, I hope this episode will provide you with some inspiration and wisdom on your journey to accomplish your career goals. I also strongly encourage you to head back to previous Imagineer Podcast episodes to listen to the full discussions with each of these Imagineers. What goal are you hoping to accomplish this year? Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar opened at Disney Springs in September 2015 just prior to the formal renaming of this part of Walt Disney World from Downtown Disney. This Indiana Jones themed bar is the only one of its kind in the world, and it's loaded with Easter eggs from Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, The Last Crusade, and even Indiana Jones Adventure. The backstory of this restaurant focuses around Indy's friend and pilot, Jock Lindsey, who was featured in the first Indiana Jones film. Whether you visit this dining location for the food, drinks, or atmosphere, it's worth putting on your checklist for a future Disney vacation. In this podcast episode, I chat with Theron Skees, the lead Imagineer for Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar and Disney Sprigs, about this part of Walt Disney World (live on location). We discuss the location's backstory and many details, plus the food and connection to the rest of Disney Springs. Be sure to learn more about Theron and follow him online by visiting his website.
