Have you been reading the Word, praying, showing up at church, and still walking away feeling flat and far from God?Kathy Lindberg, founder of Watered by the Word, named something on the Treasured Wellness Show that I have watched play out in the lives of so many women I work with. Women come to her and say, “Kathy, I'm doing all the things. I'm going to church. I'm reading my Bible. I'm praying. I have my quiet time.” And they still feel empty. Still dissatisfied. Still stuck.I told Kathy something I believe with my whole heart. Spiritual fatigue is the most dangerous form of fatigue there is. When your body is tired, you feel it. When your mind is foggy, you notice it. But when your spirit runs dry while you keep performing the motions of faith, you can go a long time before anyone, including you, recognizes what is happening.The Trap of the Full ChecklistKathy calls it being a box checker, and she is honest that she has been there herself. The quiet time gets crossed off the list right alongside the emails, the school pickups, and the meetings. The heart posture underneath quietly slips away while the activity keeps going.Here is what most women never get told. A full checklist can sit right on top of an empty tank. You can be faithful in every observable way and still feel disconnected, because the doing was never the point. The relationship was. And that gap carries a real cost, one that often has a physical layer nobody is examining.When Your Faith Feels Flat, Look at Your Whole PersonI want to address something to the woman who has been praying harder, serving more, and secretly wondering whether her dryness means her faith is failing.Sometimes the spiritual flatness you feel has a root that reaches all the way into your body. When you have been running on chronic stress for years, your cortisol rhythm flattens, inflammation builds quietly, and your nervous system stays locked in a state of powering through. In that state, your capacity to feel almost anything, including the presence of God you know is there, gets muffled or muted.Here is the part most midlife women do not realize yet. What you are feeling is common, and it is a signal.The exhaustion, the flatness, the sense that something is off long before any lab test reading confirms it. In my experience most women are already roughly two-thirds of the way toward a diagnosis by the time their bloodwork flags it through a conventional reading.That means the tiredness you have been powering through sits inside a window where things are still very changeable. Common has quietly convinced a lot of women it is normal. It is common, and it is not normal, and this is exactly the moment where taking the reins changes the outcome.This is part of what I call High-Functioning Fatigue™, the invisible depletion of a woman whose drive has outpaced her body's current capacity. She looks capable on the outside because she is. Underneath, the tank is running dangerously low, and it touches every part of her, spirit included. The woman in that place is asking for answers, for language to understand what her body has been trying to tell her, so her spirit has room to breathe again.The Invitation Is Smaller Than You ThinkHave you been believing that reconnecting with God requires an hour you do not have?Kathy shared something freeing. Jesus is offering an invitation, and it holds whether you have five minutes or five hours. There is life to be given through the Word, through silence, through prayer, in whatever measure of time you can plug in today. It is never too late, and there is no expectation of perfection.This is the same principle I build into the lives of the women I guide. We create daily restore times, small intentional pauses to be with the Lord and to let the body settle out of emergency mode. Some days that looks like a cozy chair and a full cup of coffee.Most days it looks like five minutes before you open your laptop, listening to a Psalm, breathing slow, letting your nervous system come down. Scripture calls us to “be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Stillness is a practice you can steward, one small choice at a time.Kathy keeps Scripture note cards where she will see them, on the mirror, on the refrigerator, in the car during her commute. During her own fiery season, filling her mind with the things of God was literally life giving. That is stewardship of the mind, and it is a spiritual practice and a physiological one at the same time.What you feed your mind, your body listens to.You Were Made to Prosper as Your Soul ProspersThe verse that anchors everything I do is 3 John 1:2. “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”Read it slowly. Your health and your soul were designed to rise together. To be united. When one is depleted for long enough, the other feels the drought.So here is the question I want to leave with you. What if that emptiness you have been carrying is your whole person asking to be understood and cared for, while there is still time to respond well?You do not have to figure this out alone. Kathy said it plainly, and Scripture said it first in Genesis. We were made for community, not to walk this out in isolation. The same is true of your health. On a recent episode of the AgNet News Hour, USDA Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs Luke Lindberg outlined how the Trump administration is working to expand export opportunities for American agriculture while reducing the nation's agricultural trade deficit. Lindberg said restoring the United States to an agricultural trade surplus has been a top priority since he took office. He noted that the country entered the administration with a projected $50 billion agricultural trade deficit, but recent export gains have significantly narrowed that gap. According to Lindberg, realized trade figures are running well ahead of earlier forecasts thanks to expanded market access and new trade agreements. A key driver behind that progress has been the administration's renewed emphasis on trade negotiations. Lindberg said nine new trade agreements and nine additional framework agreements have created new opportunities for U.S. producers to reach international customers. He emphasized that stronger export markets ultimately benefit farmers by increasing competition for American products and improving profitability on the farm. The interview also coincided with celebrations surrounding America's 250th birthday, providing an opportunity to highlight agriculture's historic role in building the nation. Lindberg said farmers and ranchers remain America's greatest ambassadors, noting that international buyers increasingly want to know who produced their food and how it was grown. He said USDA is investing hundreds of millions of dollars through export promotion programs to help producer organizations tell that story around the world. Lindberg highlighted several international markets showing strong momentum for U.S. agriculture, including Vietnam, where exports of cotton, tree nuts, wheat, and corn have reached record levels. He also pointed to growing opportunities in Southeast Asia and discussed upcoming USDA agribusiness trade missions to Australia, Ghana, and Vietnam. Each destination was selected for its potential to strengthen long-term export relationships and diversify markets beyond traditional trading partners. For California agriculture, Lindberg said specialty crops continue to play an important role in USDA's export strategy. He cited particularly strong demand for California tree nuts in markets including Europe, while noting additional growth opportunities exist in countries such as India and China. He also encouraged specialty crop organizations to take advantage of USDA's Technical Assistance for Specialty Crops program, which helps address trade barriers and expand overseas sales. Looking ahead, Lindberg said one of the biggest challenges will be overcoming non-tariff trade barriers and ensuring international regulations keep pace with innovation in American agriculture. He believes continued collaboration between USDA, producer organizations, and individual farmers will be essential to maintaining export momentum. "The momentum is heading in our direction," Lindberg said. He encouraged farmers and ranchers to participate in USDA trade missions and continue serving as ambassadors for American agriculture, adding that no one tells the story of U.S. farming better than the producers themselves. This Day in Legal History: Black Monday and the End of the NIRAOn May 27, 1935 — a day quickly dubbed “Black Monday” by the press — the United States Supreme Court delivered three unanimous decisions that gutted central pieces of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal in a single morning. The most consequential was A.L.A. Schechter Poultry Corp. v. United States, in which the Court struck down the National Industrial Recovery Act. The case grew out of the prosecution of a Brooklyn kosher poultry slaughterhouse for violating the “Live Poultry Code,” one of the hundreds of industry codes drafted by trade groups and given the force of federal law by the National Recovery Administration. The Court held that the NIRA's code-making scheme was an unconstitutional delegation of legislative power to private actors and the executive, and that the federal government's Commerce Clause authority did not reach the intrastate sale of poultry to local butchers. Justice Cardozo, concurring, famously described the statute as “delegation running riot.”The same day, in Humphrey's Executor v. United States, the Court cabined the President's power to remove members of independent regulatory commissions, a holding that would shape the constitutional status of agencies like the FTC, SEC, and FCC for the next ninety years. And in Louisville Joint Stock Land Bank v. Radford, the Court invalidated the Frazier-Lemke Farm Bankruptcy Act as an uncompensated taking from secured creditors. Roosevelt was, by all accounts, furious — and Black Monday became the proximate cause of his 1937 court-packing plan, which failed in Congress but is generally credited with prompting the “switch in time” that produced the more deferential commerce-clause and administrative-law jurisprudence of Jones & Laughlin Steel and the decades that followed. The nondelegation doctrine the Court announced in Schechter has, famously, not been used to strike down a federal statute since — though it has been the subject of growing interest from the current Court's conservative majority, which makes the ninety-first anniversary of Black Monday more than just a historical footnote.Former President Joe Biden has sued the Department of Justice to block the release of audio recordings and transcripts from his interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur, the prosecutor who investigated Biden's handling of classified documents and declined to bring charges. According to the filing, Biden argues that releasing the recordings would skirt federal law restricting disclosure of materials gathered in a special counsel probe, and would effectively turn protected investigative material into political fodder. The suit follows a 2024 Freedom of Information Act action by the conservative Heritage Foundation seeking the same recordings, and comes against the backdrop of repeated efforts by the current administration to make Hur-era material public — efforts the Biden team has argued are intended to embarrass the former president rather than to serve any legitimate investigative or oversight function. The transcripts of the Hur interviews were released back in 2024, but the audio itself has been the subject of executive privilege fights ever since. Worth watching for what the court does with the privilege claims, and for how the Special Counsel regulations are treated now that there is an ex-president on each side of these disputes.Former President Biden sues DOJ over release of interview audio | ReutersThe Trump administration is asking a California federal judge to throw out an expanded challenge to its sweeping reorganization of the federal workforce, calling the litigation a “litigation safari.” In a Friday motion to dismiss filed in AFGE v. Trump, the administration urged Judge Susan Illston to toss a supplemental complaint that broadened the case to cover, among other things, the downsizing of FEMA and a set of forward-looking workforce planning documents the administration issued last October. The original suit, filed in April 2025 by a coalition including the American Federation of Government Employees, SEIU, and the cities of Chicago, Baltimore, and San Francisco, challenged layoffs and reorganizations at more than twenty federal agencies. Judge Illston enjoined the workforce plans last May, but the Supreme Court stayed her injunction in July, and she has since declined to dismiss the case outright.The administration's argument is essentially jurisdictional: that the October planning documents are too tentative to constitute “final agency action,” that there is no specific DHS order behind the FEMA contract lapses the plaintiffs point to, and that individual FEMA terminations must run through the administrative civil-service process rather than land in district court. The “litigation safari” framing — that the plaintiffs are simply “roving the executive branch to explore various employment issues” — is rhetorically catchy but glosses over the more interesting underlying question: how cleanly the Administrative Procedure Act's “final agency action” requirement maps onto a coordinated, rolling, and openly cross-agency reorganization. A ruling on the dismissal motion is expected later this summer.Trump Admin Looks To Ax Expanded Suit Over Staffing Cuts - Law360Billionaire insurance magnate Greg Lindberg was sentenced in the Western District of North Carolina to twelve years in federal prison across two separate criminal cases — eighty-seven months on charges that he tried to bribe the state's insurance commissioner, and 144 months on wire-fraud charges arising from a $2 billion scheme in which prosecutors said he treated the insurance companies he controlled as a personal piggy bank. The sentences will run concurrently. Judge Max Cogburn also entered a preliminary restitution order of $1.6 billion based on a court-appointed special master's recommendation, which Lindberg's defense team described as the largest restitution award in state history.Prosecutors said the scheme harmed more than two hundred thousand victims, most of them elderly annuity holders, at least twenty thousand of whom died before any promised payouts arrived. The bribery case has its own complicated history — Lindberg was first convicted in 2020, had that conviction vacated by the Fourth Circuit in 2022 over faulty jury instructions, and was reconvicted on retrial in 2024. He pleaded guilty to the separate wire-fraud and money-laundering counts in November 2024. Judge Cogburn credited Lindberg's “extraordinary cooperation” with prosecutors and the special master, but also noted, with what reads like real exasperation in the transcript, that Lindberg has continued to file pro se civil lawsuits against the insurance companies he once owned and that the case illustrates how much of our regulatory apparatus can be “bought and sold like sacks of potatoes.” The government had sought roughly fourteen and a half years; Lindberg had asked for four.‘Regretful' Billionaire Gets 12 Years For $2B Fraud, Bribery - Law360The Colorado Supreme Court ruled unanimously that a debt buyer suing a consumer must attach to its complaint a non-affidavit writing that actually shows the buyer owns that consumer's debt — not just a generic bill of sale showing that the buyer purchased some bundle of receivables from the original creditor. The case, Wright v. Portfolio Recovery Associates, involved a $671.29 Victoria's Secret credit-card balance that Comenity Bank had sold to Portfolio Recovery in 2018. Portfolio Recovery's complaint attached a bill of sale and an affidavit identifying the last four digits of Wright's account number, and the lower courts found that sufficient under Colorado's Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. The Colorado Supreme Court, in the first opinion authored by recently appointed Justice Susan Blanco, reversed and held the affidavit could not cure a complaint that didn't first satisfy the statute's non-affidavit-writing requirement.The practical consequence is significant: the four largest debt buyers alone filed close to forty thousand cases in Colorado county courts between 2013 and 2015, accounting for around eight percent of the state's county-court civil docket, and many of those complaints have historically relied on exactly the kind of generic bill-of-sale-plus-affidavit packaging the court just rejected. Consumer advocates argue the ruling will help consumers — most of whom never had any relationship with the debt buyer — understand and respond to the suits filed against them; the debt-buying industry will, in the near term, need to retool its pleading practices statewide.Colo. “Yes we can” vote and protest our way out of authoritarianism. It's a classic case of academic literature never making it to mainstream consumption. Hang around social media long enough and you'll hear that we're basically screwed. A complete fascist take over is either extremely likely, inevitable, or it's already here. And there's not much we can do about it. Unless some other country invades us, we'll be waiting for a civil war or a bloody military coup to hopefully maybe turn things around. That's what history teaches us, right? Literally the opposite. An incredible data set that a team of thousands of academics have been assembling for over a decade provides a unique opportunity to examine these questions with fresh eyes. To look at wannabe dictators and see how many succeeded, how many eventually lost power, how democracy returned (if ever), and why. With this systematic approach, we see that strengthened democracy specifically because of authoritarian episodes is increasingly common. In fact, in the last 30 years it's the most common response to autocratization, and most often achieved by internal democratic actors. Taking this into account, events once viewed as episodes of successful stand-alone autocratization, with resistance ultimately futile, are actually better characterized as failures that caused a wave of democratic sentiment in the populace.
