A close encounter of the fifth kind is when you communicate with the alien – either verbally or telepathically. But then there is a close encounter of the sixth kind – the kind of encounter not even die-hard Ufologists and lovers of anything extraterrestrial want to experience… because nobody comes back from it alive. In 1946, a New Orleans bar owner named Owen Brennan opened Brennan's Vieux Carre on Bourbon Street. Fresh out of high school, his sister Ella became his de facto manager there. Just before Owen's untimely death a few years later, plans were in place to move the restaurant to Royal Street, where the Brennan family dynasty truly began. Today, Brennan's Restaurant on Royal Street is grander than ever – all thanks to the loving care of Owen and Ella's nephew, Ralph Brennan. Named one of the 20 most influential restaurant people in the country by Restaurant Business Magazine, Ralph runs some of the city's finest dining destinations. There's Ralph's on the Park, Red Fish Grill, the Napoleon House and Café NOMA, just to name a few. On this week's show, we sit down with Ralph Brennan himself to discuss his life in food. Then, we speak with Braithe Tidwell, the corporate beverage director for the Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group. Braithe helped the wine program at Brennan's regain its status on the Wine Spectator Grand Award-winning list. Most recently, Braithe collaborated with Piper Heidsieck to create a bespoke Brennan's champagne. Next, we learn about Brennan's annual tradition of hosting the "Slowest Second Line on Earth," complete with ten terrific turtles and a rapping judge. Finally, we step inside Brennan's kitchen for an unforgettable breakfast. For their poached eggs alone, the restaurant goes through over half a million eggs each year. Executive Chef Ryan Hacker shows us how his team perfectly poaches hundreds of eggs at a time to feed crowds of hungry morning diners. "The history of New Orleans is filled with colorful characters, from pirates and priests to musicians, authors and artists…but if you ask anyone who the most notorious individual in the history of the city is, they're gonna tell you, its the infamous Madame Marie Delphine LaLaurie." Madame Delphine LaLaurie was a wealthy socialite in 19th-century New Orleans, infamous for the horrific treatment of enslaved people in her mansion. In 1834, a fire at her Royal Street home led to the discovery of tortured individuals, solidifying her reputation as one of the city's most sinister figures. Today, the LaLaurie Mansion stands as one of the most haunted and infamous buildings in the French Quarter. Though privately owned and not open to the public, it remains a focal point on ghost tours, drawing visitors intrigued by its dark history. 583. Part 1 of our most recent conversation with Ed Branley, also known as the NOLA History Guy. "The clanging of a streetcar's bell conjures images of a time when street railways were a normal part of life in the city. Historic Canal Street represents the common ground between old and new with buses driving alongside steel rails and electric wires that once guided streetcars. New Orleans was one of the first cities to embrace street railways, and the city's love affair with streetcars has never ceased. New Orleans: The Canal Streetcar Line showcases photographs, diagrams, and maps that detail the rail line from its origin and golden years, its decline and disappearance for almost 40 years, and its return to operation. From the French Quarter to the cemeteries, the Canal Line ran through the heart of the city and linked the Creole Faubourgs with the new neighborhoods that stretched to Lake Pontchartrain" (Hickory Stick Bookshop). "A former High School History teacher turned computer consultant and trainer, Branley was born just north of Boston, MA, in 1958. His family moved to New Orleans when he was two, and he's called metro NOLA home ever since. Educated by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at Brother Martin High School in Gentilly (Class of 1976), he also holds a B.A. in Secondary Education from the University of New Orleans (Class of 1980). Branley taught at Redeemer High School before opening his own computer consulting business. He continues to teach, primarily in the computer specialty of Storage Area Networking." An avid fan of streetcar and public bus transportation, Branley's first book New Orleans, the Canal Streetcar Line, won critical acclaim across the city (Amazon). Often a song has a special meaning that has absolutely nothing to do with either its lyrics or its melody. The Flood's tight connection to W.C. Handy's 100-year-old “Yellow Dog Blues,” for instance, dates back to 2020 and the deep, dark days of the Covid-19 epidemic. With the whole world masked and distanced, the band couldn't get together for its weekly gatherings. It was during the loneliness of that seemingly endless quarantine that Charlie Bowen got obsessed with trying to learn that song.WoodsheddingIt wasn't his first time to try. Far from it. Bowen seemed to have always loved Bessie Smith's 1925 original recording, but he had found her classic vocal on that old Columbia recording darn-near impossible to copy. Then one bright morning, while tooling around YouTube, Charlie discovered a video of a wonderful 2010 rendition of the song by Tuba Skinny. Recorded on Royal Street in New Orleans' French Quarter, it featured the fabulous Erika Lewis just killing it. And her approach — perhaps because it was on video — seemed more approachable.Today the video has more than a million views; Charlie probably contributed about 10,000 of them himself as he painstakingly worked through the song, slowly picking up Erika's brilliant nuance and style on each line.“Poor Pamela!” Sam St. Clair once quipped. Sam could just picture it: The Bowens were Covid-trapped together for who-knows-how-long, and there was Charlie doggedly singing those same damn lines over and over again. A patient woman, is our Pamela.Anyway, by the following spring Charlie finally had the tune ready for a special public debut.Playing in the ParksIt was during that same Covid Winter that Floodster Emerita Veezy Coffman came up with an idea for the venue."Once spring comes," she said one night, "what if we had some public jam sessions out in the park?" People were really eager to get out again, she noted, and probably would appreciate hearing some free music. One of the outings that followed that suggestion found the Family Flood jamming in Central Park in Ashland, Ky., on a happy Sunday afternoon.Today that public jam is recorded as a red-letter day in The Flood's scrapbook. That's because it not only finally got the Family Flood back out into the fresh air, but also inspired bassist Randy Hamilton to return to the fold. For the previous two years, Randy had put his Floodishness on the shelf in order to pursue other interests. However, by May 2021, he was ready to wade back in, and that lovely Sunday in the park was the catalyst. Randy had such a good time — and his old band mates were so thrilled to hear him again — that he immediately accepted the invitation to join back up.“Yellow Dog Blues,” as illustrated in Pamela's video above, captured Randy's first solo of the afternoon. (An extra treat is watching Doug Chaffin pull his chair a little bit closer to better hear his old buddy play.)Doug's Last Favorite New Flood TuneOh, Doug. Covid had been especially hard on him. Four months before the video shot, Doug had spent more than two weeks in the hospital. Doctors later said that had it not been for the vaccine and booster shots he and Donna got, the virus almost surely would have taken him.Doug survived, but he was never back to his full strength. Further complicating matters, he also was fighting cancer by then. Those treatments lowered his immune system so much that from then on he needed to avoid being around more than a few people at a time.In the last two years of his life, Doug did have some good days among the bad, especially when music was involved. Masked and diligently distanced, small groups of Floodsters made regular treks to see him and try to boost his spirits. Here's such a joyful moment celebrated in a May 2022 podcast:In almost all of those final sessions at the Chaffin house, Doug would call for “Yellow Dog Blues” as the last tune of the night. As Charlie said recently:Interested in the Song's History?Of course, as Doug well knew, there's no canine anywhere near that song.If you'd like to find our what the “yellow dog” really was — and to read the rest of the curious history of this great old W.C. Handy standard — check out earlier Flood Watch report by clicking here. This is a public episode. Pappy: Known for being a very limited part of the yearly Buffalo Trace "allocation season" for Pappy Van Winkle products, the 13 year Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye doesn't often get talked about as much as some of the other products like Pappy 15 year or the ultra-aged 23 year oak bomb. Sazerac: The One and Only New Orleans Original. Sazerac Rye Whiskey symbolizes the tradition and history of New Orleans. Rye Whiskey dates back to the 1800's, around the time when saloons, veiled as Coffee Houses, began lining the streets of New Orleans. It was at the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street where local patrons were served toddies made with Rye Whiskey and Peychaud's Bitters. The libation became known as the “Sazerac” and America's first branded cocktail was born. This is the whiskey that started it all.

TW: This week we discuss the brutal murder and torture of enslaved persons in the U.S. in the 1800s. Upon further research (unfortunately after the recording of the episode), Ash found that "slave" is no longer a politically correct term, but it IS used throughout the episode. If that word or the subject matter is particularly upsetting to you, you might want to skip this one.Happy Black History Month! This definitely isn't a happy story, but this history is very important. This week we travel back to 2021 (and then the 1800s), where Ash, former co-host Cameron Dexter and former audio engineer Evette Darensbourg discuss infamous socialite and serial torturer and murderer of enslaved people, Delphine LaLaurie. You may know who today's story is about if you're a fan of American Horror Story, and especially if you watched Season 3, Coven! Ash takes you back to the Deep South of the 1800s. The slave trade was booming and the brutal mistreatment of enslaved people was rampant. It was common for slave owners to treat their enslaved people particularly savagely for fear of uprising. But one woman in particular took that practice to a whole new level of depravity. Madame LaLaurie was a socialite and central figure in New Orleans high society, but rumors had long circulated about her treatment of her enslaved people. When a fire broke out at 1140 Royal Street on April 10, 1834, first responders found a 70 year old woman chained to the stove by her ankle, with a deep wound in her head, and people would soon find out the extent to which she tortured, and inevitably murdered, many of her enslaved people.✨If you wanna get your TSFU episodes ad free and on Tuesdays instead of Fridays, check out our Patreon! Madame Delphine LaLaurie had a sorted past from birth. But in 1834 when her massive mansion in New Orleans caught fire, the truth of her misdeeds finally came to light. Known around by some to be cruel to her slaves, if hearsay is true, that became an understatement when found beneath the smoke and ashes were slaves that had been tortured, abused, if still alive, or left to rot still chained even after death. Madame LaLaurie was never apprehended for her crimes, but her infamy lives on within the bowels of 1140 Royal Street where spirits of the damned can still be seen & heard. To catch the first ever televised paranormal investigation inside the mansion, watch Season 1, Episode 7 of "Portals to Hell."
This week the boys close out the tale of one of New Orleans' most infamous villains - Madame LaLaurie, a wealthy and sadistic socialite whose barbaric lifestyle was finally exposed in 1834 when her Royal Street mansion went up in flames.

The House on Prytania (A Royal Street Novel) by Karen White A woman is haunted—both literally and figuratively—by ghosts of the past in this second novel of the Royal Street series by New York Times bestselling author Karen White. Nola Trenholm may not be psychic herself, but she's spent enough time around people who are to know when ghosts are present, and there are definitely a few lingering spirits in her recently purchased Creole cottage in New Orleans. Something, or someone, is keeping them tethered to this world. And not all of them are benign. But with the sudden return of Sunny Ryan, Beau Ryan's long-lost sister, Nola has plenty to distract her from her ghostly housemates. Especially when the tempting—yet firmly unavailable—Beau, wanting to mete out justice to those he blames for Sunny's kidnapping, asks Nola for a favor that threatens to derail her hard-won recovery and send her hurtling backward. He asks her to welcome Michael Hebert back into her life, even though Michael is the reason for Nola's bruised heart. Beau is convinced that Michael's powerful family was behind Sunny's disappearance and that Michael is the key to getting information the police won't be able to ignore—if Nola is willing to risk everything for which she's worked so hard. Torn between helping Beau and protecting herself, Nola doesn't realize until it's almost too late why the ghosts are haunting her house—a startling revelation that will throw her and Beau together to fight a common enemy. Assuming Nola can get Beau to listen to what the spirits are trying to tell him, because ignoring them could prove to be a fatal mistake...

At the turn of the twentieth century, a mysterious man arrived in New Orleans from France. His name was Jacque Saint Germain, and he was both wealthy and handsome, exuding charm and intellect. He quickly became known amongst the high society in New Orleans for the elaborate parties he hosted at his home on Royal Street in the French Quarter. However, there was something peculiar about Saint Germain. He never seemed to eat in the presence of others, and he often regaled his guests with stories of events that had occurred centuries ago, as if he had witnessed them firsthand. Rumors began to circulate about his origin and his eerie resemblance to the European Comte Saint Germain, a man Jacque claimed was his ancestor. But the rumors took a dark turn when reports emerged of an assault on a woman. Jacque Saint Germain had attacked her in an attempt to drink her blood. It seemed that he was, in fact, a vampire. As mysteriously as he had arrived, Saint Germain vanished from the city, leaving behind a tale that may have helped to inspire New Orleans' reputation as a haven for the undead. Bestselling author Karen White is releasing “The House on Prytania Street,” the second novel in her Royal Street spin-off series, on May 9. The book follows a strong heroine in New Orleans as she tries to restart her life, with a plot involving a thriller ghost mystery and romance. White aims to create character-driven stories about Southern women with “grit” and explores themes of survival and family. White has planned the series to allow readers to pick up any book out of chronological order and dive into the plot blindly. White will hold a book signing event in Woodstock, Georgia, on May 9.Top of Form Edward "Jay" Lionel Ball, a Woodstock man, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for multiple drug charges including distributing methamphetamine and manufacturing heroin. Ball was found guilty by a Cherokee County jury and sentenced by Superior Court Judge David Cannon Jr. as a recidivist, meaning he will serve the entire prison portion of his sentence without parole eligibility. The charges stem from a Cherokee Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad investigation initiated in response to a tip about a man named Reginald Jerome Foster selling methamphetamine in Cherokee County. During the investigation, agents observed Ball supplying Foster with methamphetamine and heroin. Law enforcement later executed a search warrant and discovered nearly a pound of heroin in Ball's rented house, along with methamphetamine, scales, and baggies used for distribution, and handguns and ammunition. Ball's co-defendants, Reginald Jerome Foster and Katie Marissa Zepeta, were also charged and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia Senate have passed two bills that would dissolve the current Cherokee County board of elections, replacing it with a new board appointed under a new process. If signed into law, most elections board members would be appointed by the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners. Currently, the local Republican and Democratic parties appoint two members each, and the chair is chosen by the other four members of the elections board. The passing of the bills comes after a lawsuit questioning the current system's “constitutionality." Lawmakers believe that the bill should not affect voters when going to the polls to cast a vote. One month after Creekview parted ways with longtime boys basketball coach Casey Gramling, the school found its new coach in Denmark's Tyler Whitlock. Whitlock has 16 years of coaching experience, most recently with Denmark in Alpharetta, and has five state playoff appearances since 2019. He added region championships in 2019 and 2020, with a 96-50 record over the last five seasons since starting the Danes' program. Whitlock led Denmark to the Class AAAAAAA playoffs this past season with a 16-12 overall record and a 7-3 mark in Region 6AAAAAAA. The Danes fell 54-50 to Osborne in the first round. Creekview and Denmark met once in 2022-23, with the Grizzlies winning 55-49. The Danes prided themselves on defense and physicality during Whitlock's time as coach, a mentality he plans to instill at Creekview. The Canton City Council has denied a request for a townhome neighborhood at Prominence Point Parkway The Georgia Department of Education has awarded $22,307 to eight Cherokee County Schools through its Opportunity Grants program, which seeks to expand learning options and opportunities for students. The grants, funded by federal stimulus funds under the American Rescue Plan, total $1,820,804 and will support fine arts, health and physical education, and world language programs, among others. Georgia School Superintendent Richard Woods said that these grants ensure students have access to educational opportunities that prepare them for life and keep them engaged in school. Five Cherokee County basketball players earned all-metro honors from the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Friday. River Ridge's Mataya Gayle topped the list as the Girls Metro Player of the Year after leading the Knights to the Class AAAAAA state championship. Gayle averaged 17.3 points, 5.8 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game. Gayle, who scored 25 points in River Ridge's 68-50 win over Lovejoy in the state title game, is committed to play in the Ivy League at Penn next season. Cherokee's Toni Warren, Sequoyah's Elle Blatchford and Woodstock's Karson Martin were honorable mentions. Warren had a great 2022-23 season, taking the leap to the Warriors' lead threat on offense and committing to Wofford. She scored 41 points in Cherokee's 90-67 first-round playoff win over West Forsyth, breaking the single-game team record for points scored. Blatchford led Sequoyah to another Class AAAAAA state playoff appearance, pacing the offense at 17.7 points per game, along with 4.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists. She scored 25 points against Douglas County in the first round of the playoffs and followed with 17 points in a second-round win over North Forsyth. On the boys side, Etowah's Brandon Rechsteiner and Cherokee's Tayden Owens earned honorable mention nods. Rechsteiner, a Virginia Tech commit, led Etowah to the Class AAAAAA semifinals after hitting a late free-throw to beat St. Pius X and second-team all-metro honoree Spencer Elliott. He finished that game with 21 points and scored 15 points in a 56-53 semifinal loss to Alexander. Owens was a vital part of Cherokee's playoff run, which included the Warriors making the state championship game for the first time since 1982. He finished with 10 points and a go-ahead 3-pointer in a quarterfinal win over Carrollton. Happy Halloween!!! On this week's episode I am telling Russ about what is said to be one of the most haunted houses in America. 1140 Royal Street is located in New Orleans Louisiana and it has a legacy ripped right out of a horror film. In 1834 a fire broke out in the mansion. People would soon discover the atrocities being hidden in the home and realize that the person responsible for these horrible acts was a high society woman named Madame Delphine LaLaurie. I went down a rabbit hole this week about her and her crimes so get ready! Moral of this story... "those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it" Learn more about your ad choices. This week, Helen and Danni go waaaay back to the 1800s to learn about the horrible crimes of slave owner and murderer Madame La Laurie. Despite being the centre of New Orleans folklore, and one of the key characters of American Horror Story's Coven season, the real life of Delphine La Laurie is shrouded in mystery. After a string of unhappy marriages, Delphine was living the high life at her New Orleans mansion at 1140 Royal Street until her horrific crimes against enslaved people were exposed. Expect uncomfortable history, ridiculous names, and some of the most gruesome and unimaginable scenes in history. Devils in The Dark contains graphic details of violence, mentions of suicide and details of the torture of enslaved people, and is not intended for all audiences. Tori leads off with the story of an absolutely horrible human being and her house in New Orleans. Delphine LaLaurie's story is absolutely disgusting and her mansion that sits at 1140 Royal Street seems to keep reliving the horror show that was her life in that house. 481 Part 1 of our interview with Theodor "Ted" Schimer about his memoir, Defiance. In the '70s, even twenty years after Brown v. Board of Education, LSU was still refusing to give up its racist past. While most students attending LSU were primarily focused on obtaining a better life through getting a college degree, some could not turn their backs on injustice. The students who fought at Ted's side were not the wealthy fraternity or sorority members. They were from middle to lower-middle class families and the working poor. It was Ted's goal in writing this book to honor their sacrifices and tell what it was like to fight the system-the LSU administrators, the Board of Supervisors, and the Greek organizations-in the deep south in the turbulent '70s. But who killed her? (The Seal Chart Murder) *** We're all familiar with, thanks to Stephen Spielberg, the concept of a close encounter of the third kind. That's when you not only see a UFO, but you also see the extraterrestrials. The fourth kind of encounter is when you are abducted. A close encounter of the fifth kind is when you communicate with the alien – either verbally or telepathically. But then there is a close encounter of the sixth kind – the kind of encounter not even die-hard Ufologists and lovers of anything extraterrestrial want to experience… because nobody comes back from it alive.
