Our guest on this episode took the consumer electronics brand, Belkin, from $400 million to one billion dollars in annual revenue in only four years. As the president of Kenmore Craftsman Diehard for Sears Holding he transformed these iconic American brands by launching Kenmore and Diehard exclusively on Amazon with Kenmore becoming the first major appliance to be sold on Amazon. He is the former president of the Disney Stores Worldwide…and so much more! As someone who has seen just a few economic cycles while running major brands, I could not think of a better guide for us all than my friend, Tom Park, who offers specific and sage advice, especially for middle and lower middle market companies, as we continue to move towards increasingly uncertain times.  We also talk about consumer product trends, managing expenses, focusing on the customer experience, building infrastructure to get ahead of the curve, employee retention, creating a culture of accountability to achieve budget, the importance of market share analysis, leading well and so much more. You're going to want to listen to this episode twice as Tom shares so many nuggets from his vast experience, all of which he continues to use today as Managing Director of Portage Point, where they offer interim management, performance improvement and board services to stakeholders in periods of distress, underperformance and transition.  About Tom Park Tom Park joined Portage Point in December 2020 and currently serves as a Managing Director offering interim management, performance improvement and board services to stakeholders in periods of distress, underperformance and transition. He also currently serves on the Board of Directors for Howard's, a large independent appliance and consumer electronics retailer Prior to joining Portage Point, Tom was CEO of Incipio, a consumer products company, until he left in 2019. Tom served as President of the Kenmore Craftsman Diehard for Sears Holdings. Tom was hired in 2015 to transform these iconic American brands to maximize their value by externalizing the brands after nearly 100 years of being exclusively sold at Sears. Under Tom's leadership, the Kenmore and Diehard brands were launched exclusively on Amazon. Kenmore is the first major appliance brand to be sold on Amazon and included delivery and installation services performed by Sears. Tom was instrumental in negotiating the sale of The Craftsman Brand in 2017 to Stanley Black & Decker for $900m Prior to joining Sears, Tom held several executive positions at Belkin International, a global leader in mobile accessories, wireless networking products and IOT smart products. Positions within Belkin included President Linksys Networking Division, President of the Americas, Chief Operating Officer and CFO. During his tenure of a dozen years, Belkin saw significant growth, more than doubling the business to $1B. Prior to Belkin, Tom spent a decade with the Walt Disney Company where he was President of the Disney Stores Worldwide. In addition, he held executive positions with Disney Consumer Products. Tom was Controller for the $3B consumer products business and Controller for Walt Disney Imagineering, the design and development group for Disney theme parks Tom graduated from Villanova University with a BS in Accounting in 1979 and began his career with Unisys holding several positions in finance and accounting for over 12 years. Tom serves on several advisory boards, including the Villanova School of Business. World of Color – One will celebrate the storytelling legacy started by Walt Disney 100 years ago. The show will tell a story of how a single action creates a ripple that can grow into a wave of change. Wondrous Journeys will be the new Disneyland fireworks show that will have nods to all 60 Walt Disney Animation Studios films to date, and will include more state of the art projection effects on Main Street, it's a small world, and the Rivers of America. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2022/09/disneyland-resort-announcements-from-d23-expo-2022-and-more/ The Disney Parks Blog did what Josh D'Amaro didn't do at the D23 Expo last week – they gave us some information on the Magic Bands coming to Disneyland! No exact date was mentioned, but they did confirm that Magic Bands should be at the resort for guests this fall. The Magic Bands will allow guests to get into the parks, redeem Lightning Lane reservations, open Disney Resort Hotel room doors, buy merchandise, link PhotoPass photos, and more. Some of the flashier features include glowing with the nighttime entertainment and adding the ability to play games in the park. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2022/09/magicband-features-and-experiences-revealed-for-disneyland-resort-coming-this-fall/ One of the announcements from the D23 Expo last weekend was the new name of the hotel, formerly known as the Paradise Pier Hotel. The Pixar Place Hotel will be the name when the refurbishment is complete. No date on that yet. A Finding Nemo themed splash pad will be coming to the hotel, along with the Southern California team from Great Maple, which will run the restaurant on the first floor, along with other food and beverage locations at the hotel. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2022/09/disneyland-resort-announcements-from-d23-expo-2022-and-more/ Princess and the Frog has come to New Orleans Square – long before the retheming of Splash Mountain! Eudora's Chic Boutique featuring Tiana's Gourmet Secrets opened this week and offers Princess and the Frog themed merchandise, cooking supplies, and Tiana's own spices and sauces. Imagineers designed the story of the shop to be owned by Tiana's mother, Eudora. The new shop is just one main space that is pretty small, with walls covered in artwork showing the lives and scenes of New Orleans and Tiana herself! – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2022/09/20/explore-disneys-new-princess-and-the-frog-themed-store-with-us-eudoras-chic-boutique/ Overnight guests at Disney Resort Hotels will have a special experience for Halloween this year. Each hotel will offer trick-or-treating, with a treat map for each hotel with locations handing out complimentary candy. Hotel guests are encouraged to sign up at the front desk of their Disney Resort Hotel. The dates for this are October 28th through 31st. On Halloween night, there will be a costume contest on the Adventure Lawn at the Disneyland Hotel. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2022/09/celebrate-halloween-time-in-downtown-disney-district-and-at-the-disneyland-resort-hotels/ Weeklyteers who are interested in attending Grad Nite events at the resort will have to pay a little more this year. Ticket prices are up between 8 to 22 percent compared to last year. The Grad Nite party experience is $99 on weekdays and $104 on weekends, all-dat DCA admission with the Grad Nite party and a parkhopper option is $199 for weekdays and $219 for weekends. – https://www.ocregister.com/2022/09/16/disneyland-raises-prices-up-to-22-for-grad-nite-2023/ The painting has wrapped up at the Hollywood Lounge in the Hollwood Pictures Backlot area of Disney California Adventure. The menu has not been updated. – https://www.micechat.com/333927-disneyland-update-halloween-treats-traffic-tricks/ Another patent has been posted that was requested by Disney. This time, it is for a glasses-free VR attraction experience. In basic terms, the new technology would use projections and reflections, much like the Pepper's Ghost effect that we have had in the Haunted Mansion for years now. Of course, just because a patent is filed doesn't mean that it will show up anywhere in the parks soon. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2022/09/disney-files-patent-for-glasses-free-vr-attraction/ Discussion Topic: Tage and Teresa's Trip to Disneyland and Oogie Boogie Bash Recap

Learning In The Flow of Work - or Workflow Learning - has been a hot topic in Learning & Development in recent years but how does this approach match up with employees' expectations and what they believe to be effective to meet their development goals? In this special episode, David and Bob Mosher explore the findings of a recent survey conducted to explore the expectations of learners and perceptions of L&D to see where we are right now and what we need to do to meet learners where they need us to be. Link to Learning In The Flow Of Work Survey: https://360learning.com/guide/learning-in-the-flow-of-work-report/learning-in-the-flow-of-work-report/ KEY TAKEAWAYS Fitting learning into the workflow is incredibly effective. It turns training from something that is done once a year into an almost daily experience. Building materials for use in the workflow ensures the L&D team´s focus is on delivering the product or service the company they work for has to offer. Not having to take people off the job, means not having to find time for training. In all countries, on-the-job training delivered by peers was deemed to be the most effective. But quality varies and those that are good at it do not always have enough time available to train others. A lot of new managers do not get training before taking on their new roles. Build life rafts first, then teach swimming. Training has to solve the most critical issues first. Contextualised training is far more effective. BEST MOMENTS 'In the workflow is the most powerful and intrinsically motivating place for learning to occur. ' 'Only 29% of UK learners and slightly more in the US said online training was effective.' 'We´ve got into the habit of trying to educate generic managers. ' 'In the workplace, performance is the outcome. Learning is just one tool to get there. John explores a comparison to the Holocaust Joining CNN's John Berman Thursday morning to discuss his new documentary “The U.S. and the Holocaust,” Burns took aim at the Florida governor for flying two planeloads of Venezuelan migrants to Martha's Vineyard this week, calling it a “disturbing” play of political theater. “All of your documentaries are about history,” Berman began, “but all of them also make you think about where we are. We woke up to the news this morning that Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida sent two planeloads of migrants to Martha's Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts, including kids and whatnot. And I'm not saying, this is not a 1-for-1, this is not a parallel here in any way, but it does address some of the same themes that are part of this documentary.” Sitting with co-director Lynn Novick, Burns agreed. “Well, it's the abstraction of human life. It's basically saying that you can use a human life that is as valuable as yours or mine or Lynn's and to put it in a position of becoming a political pawn in somebody's authoritarian game. This is coming straight out of the authoritarian playbook,” he said. The documentarian then pointed to other instances in DeSantis' governance that has highlighted his refusal to participate in the democratic process. “This is what's so disturbing about DeSantis, is to use human beings, to weaponize human beings for a political purpose – it's like when somebody disagrees with him in Florida, like the Walt Disney Company, he punishes them,” Burns continued. “This is not the actions of a person participating in a democratic process in which there's an exchange of ideas. This is about punishing political enemies, putting on shows, political shows, political theater. And in this case, this is with the lives of human beings.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Everything New for Disney Parks and Resorts from D23 Expo 2022 So What's Next for Disney Parks? You won't believe what's coming behind Big Thunder Mountain at Walt Disney World This is Disney's Blue Sky sneak peak of what's coming down the road for Disney Parks. This portion of the D23 Expo had the biggest cheer of anything announced in 2022.First though, Josh D'Amaro announced what's happening with Dinoland at Disney's Animal Kingdom Park. It has been languishing and looks forgotten so the announcement of a big transformation coming was welcome. Zootopia and Moana will share the space currently occupied by Dinoland. But the biggest news of all... Disney Villains are Finally Getting a Place to Call their OwnMagic Kingdom will feature new frontiers and it's all hiding on the other side of BTM. The little town of Santa Cecilia will come to life as Coco gets a Magic Kingdom presence. And if you do want to talk about Bruno, you're in luck because you may be able to walk right into the Madrigal's casita. But all is not fun and flowers in this new land...as what if the Disney villains took up residence there as well...beyond Big Thunder Mountain. This was presented as conceptual and would likely be 10 years down the road, but Disney would not share it in this way if it weren't going to happen. Big news for Walt Disney World and Magic Kingdom. -- There's More Coming to Walt Disney WorldA new nighttime show for EPCOT will debut in late 2023 to kick-off the 100th Anniversary of the Walt Disney Company. Moana's Journey of Water and the rest of the World Celebration area at EPCOT will open in late 2023. So we'll have to bear with those construction walls for another year it seems.Figment is returning in a brand new form for a meet and greet at EPCOT. That will be in place by the end of 2023. In Magic Kingdom, the perennial favorite Hatbox Ghost will materialize once again in the Haunted Mansion. And we now know that Tron Lightcycle Run at Magic Kingdom will debut in Spring 2023. We were hoping it would be sooner, but apparently they are working on finishing touches right now. No specific date, just "spring."  Finally, in 2023, a new version of  Happily Ever After will return as part of a new Magic Kingdom nighttime show. This received a good amount of applause. What's New and Coming to Disneyland Resort The DVC Villas at Disneyland Hotel will be called the Villas at Disneyland Hotel. How creative. On October 16, 2023 Disney 100 kicks-off and it promises to be the biggest celebration ever for Disney. Under the theme of a Boundless Future the following announcements were made: The Mandalorian and Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) will be onsite starting in Mid November 2022 at Disneyland Galaxy's Edge Over at the Avengers Campus in Disney California Adventure Park, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, noted "we're just getting started." A new giant Hulk will be at Avengers Campus in California "next week."  Plus, they're bringing the Multiverse to Avengers Campus. Disney is expanding the campus to include a new attraction. In the new attraction you will battle alongside all the Avengers against all the foes from anywhere. You will fight King Thanos. This is a new Thanos -- a Thanos who won. And the Avengers are not too happy about that and you have to help them. More news to come. Also new to Disney California Adventure, they are reimagining Pacific Wharf into San Fransokyo from Big Hero Six. You'll be able to meet Baymax there.  Finally, they are reimagining Paradise Pier Hotel, as it will become Pixar Place Hotel. It will feature a Finding Nemo splash pad and more characters. All in all, Disney promises that the hotel will feel completely new. Over at Downtown Disney more than a dozen new or reimagined locations are in the works. More announcements coming over the next year. But the big news locally is a that SoCal favorite bakery Porto's is coming to Downtown Disney.  RunDisney at Disneyland is coming back in 2024. More details coming soon. It's been awhile for Run Disney as the last one took place in 2017. Mickey's ToonTown Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway are coming along. It was good to hear that it will be a slightly different version of Runaway Railway than the WDW edition, to fit into the Disneyland ToonTown story. It's all opening in 2023. Tiana's Bayou Adventure will open in late 2024 in both Walt Disney World and Disneyland. The story for the ride is that it picks up where the film (Princess and the Frog) left off. In the new story, Princess Tiana is an entrepreneur and community leader in the year 1927. She is hosting a party for the community and we need to help Tiana to find a special ingredient that she's missing.  Disney promises that the latest tech is being implemented to really enhance the outside of the whole area at night. Mist will be used like a painter's canvas. "True bayou magic." The attraction is to be a love letter to New Orleans. Guests should feel the story is authentic to the city. Another great piece of news is that the original cast will be lending their voices to the new attraction. --What's new at Disney Cruise Line The sixth ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet is all about adventure...celebrating Walt's love for exploration. The new Disney Cruise ship is called Disney Treasure. The Disney Wonder is heading to Australia and New Zealand late 2023. The island of Eleuthera and Lighthouse Point will be the new Bahamas port for Disney Cruise. 90% of the power will come from solar. What's Coming to Disney Parks Around the Globe Zootopia is opening at Shanghai Disneyland.  World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland will open in the second half of 2023, featuring a Wandering Oaken sleigh coaster. Disneyland Paris' Frozen Arendelle land is coming along and Disneyland Hotel is being fully reimagined -- opening in 2024 At Tokyo Disneyland, Disney Fantasy Spring will feature Peter Pan, Tangled and Frozen. Plus a totally reimagined Space Mountain will open by 2027 at Tokyo Disney. Pixar We Belong Together will be debuting at Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris next year. The DLP 30th Anniversary celebrations will be continuing until September 2023.--Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, Amelia and I hope that you enjoyed it. No one hopes for massive turmoil or an upheaval of life as we know it.    But through chaos comes clarity and changes like these offer us an opportunity to reevaluate who we really are and want to be.    Last year, Dave Hollis's life was turned upside down and in today's episode he welcomes us into the messy realities of his new one - everything from career transitions, protecting his sanity when his life was on blast, navigating relationship issues and facing his own demons.   Dave is a New York Times best-selling author, host of the popular Rise Together podcast, keynote speaker, and life and business coach. Dave's history includes CEO of a media start-up, President of Sales for the film studio at The Walt Disney Company, talent manager across film, tv, and music, along with work in publicity, research, and technology in the entertainment sector.   More specifically, we discuss these the challenging questions, and several others, that many people have to face in their lives:   What does success look like for me? (7:30) Am I the reason people don't find value in what I have to offer? (14:00) What have I learned from the difficult experiences in my life? (37:20) How do I know if this is the right solution for me? (47:00)   This type of self-reflection is critical to your ability to effectively lead those around you in a very specific and purposeful way.  Dave makes it clear, you can't put a price tag on the benefits of surrounding yourself with a community of experienced people to learn from in the pursuit of your goals - whatever they are.   If you're looking for that type of community, you're in the right place.  At Art of Coaching, we offer community-based experiences in several ways to make sure we can meet you where you're at.   The Conscious Coaching Challenge, starting in October, is a 30-day online challenge that provides you with the tools, guidance, feedback, and support you need from the entire AOC team and other members of the AOC family also looking to grow and improve.  In addition, you'll receive tons of FREE resources AND IT'S ONLY $99.  The Challenge starts in less than 1 month, so don't wait! SIGN UP TODAY!   If you're wanting something more long term, we also provide group mentoring - The Coalition - and 1-on-1 Mentoring with several different members of the AOC team.  These options offer a more individualized and tailored experience, ranging in time from as short as 3 months, to an evergreen subscription based opportunity.     Art of Coaching exists to provide you with the type of value we wish we would have had in our careers.  Please learn from our mistakes!  You can reach out to us directly at info@artofcoaching.com to find out more about what we can do for you. Learning & Development seems to be constantly evolving but at the same time revisiting and reinventing what has come before. In this episode, we discuss the emerging trends that have their origins in the past and the pioneers that we all need to pay more attention to. KEY TAKEAWAYS Even today, much of what we do in L&D is not evidence-based. This has to change. We are not taking successful methods from the past and reworking them for the modern world. Instead, we are simply rehashing old theories, without looking for evidence that they work. We don´t look back to see who might have done what we are trying to achieve before. Now that the most recent class of Disney Legends has been named and inducted, we're taking this opportunity to discuss the Disney Legends whose projects and contributions to The Walt Disney Company have meant the most to us personally. Help us celebrate these outstanding men and women as we discuss the impact they've had on the Disney community and Disney history. Also on this episode, we go "Behind the Magic" of one of our favorite characters, Sonny Eclipse, whose voice actor sadly passed away last month. It was after he had worked 3 years as an investment analyst with Bear Stearns and spent more than 2 years inside the corporate strategy bullpen of The Walt Disney Company that Craig Abrahams decided to head to business school. However, Abrahams says that unlike many of his future classmates, he had made up his mind that hedge funds, investment banks, and strategy consulting firms would not be on his preferred menu of postgraduation career opportunities. “I wanted an opportunity to work really hard and stand out but also to go somewhere a little bit different, where I wasn't competing with 10 versions of myself,” explains Abrahams, whose earlier experiences at Bear Stearns and Disney had left the MBA student searching for a less traditional route to career success. Observes Abrahams: “I was looking for a place where I personally could have an impact.” That place became Las Vegas, where upon graduation Abrahams joined Caesars Entertainment as a director of broadcasting and new media. “This was about putting myself in a position where I would be in the right place if an opportunity came along,” comments Abrahams, who within 6 months of joining the gaming giant was tapped to help launch Caesars Interactive Entertainment. “I remember when Gary Loveman, the CEO of Caesars at the time, said to me, ‘There's an opportunity to work on a business plan to create a new entity,' so that opportunity fell into my lap,” remarks Abrahams, who had served in a number of corporate development roles before advancing into the new entity's CFO office. It was as CFO of Caesars Interactive that Abrahams first became acquainted with a small Israeli company that had a megahit mobile game known as Slotomania. Caesars was smitten and in 2011 acquired the Israeli firm, Playtika. Over the next 5 years, Caesars Interactive invested more than $300 million into the business, which allowed Playtika to complete a series of acquisitions that led to the sale of the company for $4.4 billion in 2016. “This was just the first step in the evolution of Playtika,” explains Abrahams, who joined the newly private firm as CFO in 2019 and subsequently spearheaded a debt raise of $2.5 billion. The company was able to pay investors a dividend before management became focused on taking the company public, a goal that would be realized early in 2021. –Jack Sweeney

AN INTERVIEW WITH ANIMATRONICS MASTER GARNER HOLT - Disney Podcast Episode 930

Disney fans rejoice! On this episode, I'll be chatting with Garner Holt from Garner Holt Productions. Most likely you've seen old episodes of the Disneyland television series where Walt Disney and his Imagineers were building the first ever Audio-Animatronic figures like the Enchanted Tiki Room birds, President Lincoln, pirates, and many more. And that's how it used to work. Nobody was building animatronics at that time, so The Walt Disney Company and the folks at WED Enterprises had to do it for themselves. A lot of people still believe the animatronic figures we see in new attractions are being made at Walt Disney Imagineering. But that's rarely the case these days. Enter Garner Holt, who has been creating the greatest animatronics in the world since 1977, and has been building them for Disney for several decades. Whether it's small animated figures on parade floats, a giant Maleficent dragon, or anything in between, there's a good chance that Garner Holt Productions had their hands in the project. Listen as Garner shares the story of how a visit to Disneyland's Haunted Mansion changed the trajectory of his life, and how he later got to play in that exact sandbox with the creation of Haunted Mansion Holiday.
