Too often, Learning and Development professionals find themselves reacting to requests, churning out courses, and struggling to prove their value. In this episode, Jess Almlie—L&D leader and author of L&D Order Taker No More—shares how L&D teams can stop spinning their wheels and start stepping into a more strategic, credible role. Drawing from her 20+ years of experience and the insights in her new book, Jess unpacks why L&D gets stuck, how legacy thinking from stakeholders holds us back, and what it takes to shift from service provider to business partner. She introduces tools like the "Order Taker Assessment," the power of building a vision, and the role of strategic playbooks in aligning stakeholders across the business. Jess also explores the reality of organisational politics, the importance of truly understanding your business, and the small, intentional steps that help L&D earn trust and influence over time. For anyone who's tired of being reactive and wants to build a more impactful L&D function—this episode offers both validation and a clear path forward. KEY TAKEAWAYS Moving from being order takers to true business partners means saying no to low-impact requests and focusing on work that drives organisational goals. L&D needs to get off of the content creation hamster wheel. Navigating organizational politics, the “unwritten rules” of how work gets done, is essential, not optional. Operate with integrity and savvy, not naivety or ego. BEST MOMENTS “If you stand in one place on the beach and apply gentle pressure with your foot and slowly massage the sand, eventually you create a deep indent.” "We need to operate as if we are a part of the business, not as separate.” “This is a mindset and cultural shift for the entire organisation about how to work with L&D.” Jess Almlie Bio Jess Almlie is a seasoned Learning and Development leader, consultant, speaker, and author of L&D Order Taker No More. With over two decades of experience across sectors including healthcare, education, and financial services, Jess has led enterprise learning strategies that focus on business alignment, stakeholder engagement, and measurable impact. Most recently, she served as Vice President of Learning Experience at WEX. Drawing on her own journey from instructional designer to senior L&D executive, Jess helps practitioners diagnose the factors keeping them stuck and take deliberate steps toward becoming strategic business partners. Her work blends deep organisational insight with practical tools - like assessments, playbooks, and stakeholder mapping - to help L&D teams earn influence and deliver real value. Jess is helping to reshape what it means to be effective in L&D today - moving beyond reactivity to lead with clarity, confidence, and purpose. https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessalmlie L&D Must Change Podcast: https://www.jessalmlie.com/podcast Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Order-Taker-No-More-Strategic-ebook/dp/B0F83XBBCV VALUABLE RESOURCES L&D Master Class Series: https://360learning.com/blog/l-and-d-masterclass-home ABOUT DAVID JAMES David has been a People Development professional for more than 20 years, most notably as Director of Talent, Learning & OD for The Walt Disney Company across Europe, the Middle East & Africa. It's been a tough few weeks for those who have chosen to make The Walt Disney Company part of their identity. Bob Iger's decision to kowtow to FCC chairman, Brendan Carr's, threats left Disney fans unglued. In this episode of Passing Judgment, Jessica Levinson unpacks the legal issues behind Jimmy Kimmel's temporary show suspension. She explains the distinction between private action by ABC and possible government coercion from the FCC or the President, outlining why the First Amendment generally protects speech from government—not private—actions. Jessica also discusses the limited circumstances under which the FCC could revoke broadcast licenses and what this case means for free speech and media organizations moving forward. Here are three key takeaways you don't want to miss:1. The Suspension and Return of Jimmy Kimmel's ShowJessica Levinson opens the episode by explaining the sequence of events around Jimmy Kimmel's temporary suspension from ABC after a controversial comment in his monologue. She emphasizes that although he has now been returned to air, the legal issues discussed still remain relevant.2. The Role and Limits of the First AmendmentA central theme is clarifying what the First Amendment protects. Jessica explains that the First Amendment limits government action against speech, not actions taken by private entities like ABC. If ABC alone had suspended Kimmel with no government involvement, it would not be a First Amendment issue.3. Government Involvement and the FCC's RoleThe episode explores concerns about potential government overreach, specifically whether statements made by the FCC chair or the President could constitute government coercion. Jessica details how, if the government pressures a private company to take action against someone's speech, First Amendment concerns are triggered.Follow Our Host: @LevinsonJessica
Hey Ohana, With spooky season just around the corner, it got us in the mood to chat about the spookier side of Disney and what could be scarier than those characters that we all love to hate...the villains! On this week's show we're not just talking about villains in general though, rather with the new villains land looming in the future of Magic Kingdom, we're chatting about the top 10 villains we think would make the best additions to the land. Some of our picks may line up with Disney's list of 13, while others may not. Tune in to hear which villains we think should play a prominent role in the new land, why, and how we think they could be utilized...of and spoiler alert, we also share why some of the characters on Disney's list shouldn't be! Thanks to our friends, Sue Passauer, Johanna Malec, and Chris Blagg for joining in on the fun this show! Theoretically, we understand the difference between success and happiness. But there’s a big gap between theory and reality. What bridges that gap is often, courage. Suppose you worked hard, have a great job in a competitive field, are well paid and highly regarded, but you’re not really happy… Would you have the courage to walk away from your success and take a chance doing something that might bring you very little, except, possibly, happiness? That was the question Skye Jackson answered with, “Yes.” Skye was an entertainment lawyer in Hollywood. She had a great job at The Walt Disney Company. Until 2024. That’s when Skye traded her well-paid job dealing in the precise meaning of words in legal contracts, for a low-to-no pay job dealing in the ambiguous meaning of words, as a poet. Today, Skye is a published and well-recognized poet, a professor of creative writing, literature and poetry at Xavier University, and Chairwoman of the New Orleans Poetry Festival Board. When it came time for Crystal Burke to make a change, she wanted something different not just for herself, but for every other woman in the country. As a registered nurse practitioner for over 15 years, mostly in the fields of oncology and palliative care, Crystal knows a lot about the functioning of the human body. But when she started experiencing symptoms of perimenopause in her 30’s, she was blindsided. Finding that her symptoms were influencing almost every aspect of her life, and simultaneously discovering that doctors, even OB-GYN’s, didn’t seem to know how to treat her, or other women in her position, Crystal decided to do something to change that. In 2024, Crystal and her medical doctor husband, Steven Youngblood, founded The Menopause Clinic. It’s a tele-health-based clinic where any woman with an internet connection can consult with medical providers who specialize in recognizing and treating perimenopause – which is a phase of pre-menopause - and menopause. You’ve no doubt noticed there are a lot of memes out there encouraging women to empower themselves. “You Go Girl.” “You Do You.” “Live Your Best Life.” And plenty more. One of the reasons these women-centric slogans exist at all is, in many walks of life, things are still predominantly male dominated. There are women though – Skye and Crystal are two of them – who are – for want of a better expression – taking the bull by the horns. Crystal's The Menopause Clinic is a revolutionary idea for women’s healthcare that seems way overdue. And Skye has a voice that resonates with a lot of people, especially young Black women - Skye's poetry seems to give them both her perspective and a vocabulary to reflect on themselves. In this episode, Kevin Yates - widely known as the L&D Detective® - joins David to explore why measuring impact remains one of the most persistent challenges in Learning & Development, and how L&D can finally start getting it right. Together, they unpack why reporting on learning activity isn't enough, what it really means to uncover evidence of performance impact, and how L&D must evolve to contribute meaningfully within the wider performance ecosystem. Kevin outlines the flaws in traditional training needs analysis, introduces his Workplace Performance Investigation Framework, and explains how business metrics—not LMS data—must become the cornerstone of meaningful measurement. Kevin also shares how L&D teams can use tools like the Performance Impact Blueprint and Instructional Design for Performance to plan for outcomes from the outset, and why embracing the identity of ‘impact investigators' is critical for L&D's future. If you're serious about proving learning's contribution to business performance, this episode is unmissable. KEY TAKEAWAYS The "village" approach is central to performance. L&D should measure collective, not isolated, impact. LMS data is easy to get, but it does not truly measure the impact on business performance. The 6 questions for business performance and 6 for human performance, in the framework, uncover the true needs behind a training request. Because improving performance involves many teams, a project management approach helps organize everyone's roles, tasks, and contributions toward a shared business goal. BEST MOMENTS “It takes a village to impact workplace performance." “We must define impact. Before we can investigate it.” "Designing for performance is very different than designing for training." Kevin M. Yates Bio Kevin M. Yates is globally recognised as the L&D Detective®, known for investigating the impact of training and learning on workplace performance. With over 25 years of experience across major brands like McDonald's, Meta, and Grant Thornton, Kevin brings a practical, data-driven approach to measuring learning's contribution to business results. His work empowers L&D teams to go beyond activity metrics and uncover real evidence of performance impact. Kevin is also the founder of Meals in the Meantime, a nonprofit tackling food insecurity with the same focus on measurable outcomes. Hey Ohana, This week we've got a really fun episode as we're joined by our friend Sue Passauer and our new friend Lisa DiNotto Glassner where we chat about capturing those Disney scents we all know and love. We chat a little about how Disney utilizes scents and while that was originally intended to be the main topic of the episode, our conversation rather quickly and organically switched lanes to chatting about the amazing ways Lisa has been able to capture those scents for us to all bring home with her ever so popular Core Memory Candle line of candles, waxes, oils, and more. Our chat dives into everything from the famous Smellatizers to how Lisa chooses which scents she captures and everything in between. We can't wait to have her back on to chat about her other endeavor - capturing Disney through photos of our favorite place and her Thousand Circle Images! Be sure to check out all of Core Memories Candles products before the pop up shop closes at the end of the month by visiting Lisa's site at https://thousandcircles.com/collections/core-memory-candles If you're thinking of planning a visit to Disney, be sure to reach out to the official TA of Married to A Disney Addict, Sue Passauer! We present our reviews of Nimona the comic and the movie!Nimona is a science fantasy graphic novel by American cartoonist ND Stevenson. The story follows the title character, a shapeshifter who joins the disgraced knight Ballister Blackheart in his plans to destroy the over-controlling Institute. Blackheart's intent to operate under his code of ethics contrasts with Nimona's natural impulsivity.Stevenson began working on Nimona while attending the Maryland Institute College of Art, revisiting a character he had created in high school. Stevenson published Nimona as a webcomic from 2012 through 2014, initially through Tumblr, developing the story and the art style as time progressed. The finished work ultimately doubled as his senior thesis. After an agent reached out to Stevenson, HarperCollins released Nimona in print form in 2015. It has been translated into at least 16 other languages and adapted into an audiobook.Nimona's accolades include an Eisner Award, a Cybils Award, and a Cartoonist Studio Prize. Reviews and academic analyses have highlighted themes of queerness and fluidity of identity and how they oppose and subvert traditional controlling institutions and exclusionary systems.Nimona is a 2023 American animated science fantasy action-adventure film directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane from a screenplay by Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor, based on the 2015 graphic novel of the same name by ND Stevenson. Set in a medieval-futuristic kingdom, the film features the voices of Chloë Grace Moretz as the eponymous shapeshifting character and Riz Ahmed as her boss and former knight Ballister, with Eugene Lee Yang and Frances Conroy voicing supporting roles.Originally a production of Blue Sky Studios, it was set to be directed by Patrick Osborne, with an initial release date of 2020. Following the Walt Disney Company's acquisition of 21st Century Fox, the parent company of Blue Sky, it was delayed multiple times before being canceled due to Blue Sky's closure in April 2021. However, Annapurna Pictures revived the project the following year, with Bruno and Quane announced as directors, DNEG Animation providing animation, and Netflix acquiring worldwide distribution. Christophe Beck was hired to compose the film's rock-inspired score.Nimona had its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 14, 2023, was released in select cinemas on June 23, and made its streaming debut on June 30. The film received critical acclaim and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Critics' Choice, Annie Awards and Academy Awards.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
