Charles Gasparino, author of Go Woke, Go Broke: The Inside Story of the Radicalization of Corporate America, explores the radicalization of corporate America by tracing the rise of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives. He argues that these movements, once fringe academic theories, were embraced by corporate elites at global forums like Davos and the UN. This shift was accelerated by the 2008 financial crisis, which led CEOs to adopt "stakeholder capitalism" as a defensive "cover your backside" strategy against progressive populism and threats of government nationalization. The book details how major asset managers like BlackRock and Vanguard leveraged trillions in investment money to force progressive social changes on the companies in their portfolios. Gasparino uses The Walt Disney Company as a primary example of "woke" activism backfiring, noting how political entanglements in Florida and ideological shifts in programming led to significant financial and cultural fallout. He also highlights the story of Sage Steele, who was allegedly forced out of ESPN for holding heterodox, non-woke views. Ultimately, Gasparino documents an ongoing backlash against these policies, as evidenced by massive withdrawals from ESG-focused funds and a retreat from diversity programs by firms like Goldman Sachs. He concludes that "wokeness" is often a distraction from core business responsibilities, such as managing balance sheets, and warns that it divides the country while harming the bottom line. (1)
For many Disney fans, choosing a trip to Walt Disney World or Disneyland often comes down to proximity—travelers on the east coast default to Walt Disney World, and west-coasters often select Disneyland—but there are numerous advantages to vacationing at the resort farther from your home. Removing the distance factor from our travel plans, we compare what it's like to vacation at Walt Disney World and Disneyland, staying on property in each case, and how traveling with young kids changes the experience. We also discuss our favorite attractions, food, and memories from our most recent trip to the Disneyland Resort. Sonya Shelton is the founder of Executive Leadership Consulting, where she's spent 25+ years helping organizations like The Walt Disney Company, Nestlé, Microsoft, AECOM, and Experian align strategy, culture, and leadership. She's also the author of the Amazon bestseller You're an Executive, But Are You a Leader?, a book that lays out the enduring capabilities required to actually lead — not just hold a title. In this episode, Paul and Sonya discuss how rapid change, economic uncertainty, and AI have shortened planning horizons and made authenticity, vulnerability, trust, and intentional connection (especially in remote/hybrid settings) non-negotiable. They explore employee burnout and anxiety, the need for clarity over false certainty, and leaders' reluctance to make decisions without complete information. Sonya outlines her Red Thread model—purpose, plan, processes, positions, and passion—and argues culture and strategy must “have breakfast together,” using purpose to align teams, break silos, and build sustainable organizations.Humanity Working is a podcast focused on helping individuals, teams and organizations be ready for the future of work by maximizing their human potential. For more information, and access to our weekly newsletter, visit us at humanityworking.net.
We're living in truly crazy times, and things that would not even be remotely controversial ten years ago now bring ire to certain parts of society. A while ago, the idea of Christopher Nolan filming an adaptation of THE ODYSSEY would bring universal interest, but now any perceived ""woke" decision brings multitudes of vitriol and "discourse".Today we take a look at this film on it's own merits, and see how a myth that has evolved through centuries is recontextualized for our day and age. Join us as we aura farm with Agamemnon and take a journey with Odysseus to Ithaca as we encounter war, trauma, acceptance, and forgiveness on 70mm IMAX (none of us saw it on this format). • • •TRIAD Of The FORCE is a STAR WARS+ podcast hosted by Gus, Nani, Nad, & Chase—Puerto Rican and queer creators sharing deep dives, and heartfelt conversations from a galaxy far, far away. Chris Tarbell is a leading privacy, cyber, and data strategy executive. He currently serves as the Chief Privacy Officer for VERSANT Media LLC. Prior to his current role, Chris was an associate general counsel for Fanatics and the Walt Disney Company, where he advised global businesses on compliance with domestic and international privacy, data security, and related consumer protection laws. Most recently, Chris served as Senior Counsel at the leading law firm of Kelley Drye and Warren, where he also supported clients in numerous regulatory investigations related to marketing and advertising. In this episode… Building strong privacy programs relies on human connection and a deep understanding of organizational dynamics and business goals. To be successful, privacy professionals must participate in the business rather than just focusing on meeting legal requirements. This approach enables leaders to advocate for the tools, budget, headcount, and other resources to move the program forward. Because privacy impacts many business functions, it is very much a people business, requiring strong relationships, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to build trust with stakeholders and internal teams. So, what steps can companies take to achieve this? Putting this into practice starts with assembling a people-first privacy team and hiring individuals with the soft skills to step into unfamiliar situations, assess what is needed, and work across departments to move the program forward. By bringing curiosity and enjoyment to privacy work, they create an environment where other departments are more willing to involve privacy early and often. This approach is especially important in the media industry, where privacy pros may need to work with news colleagues to balance the right to be forgotten with First Amendment considerations or partner with intellectual property teams to protect personal information during piracy investigations. And while collaboration is essential, teams must also determine what can realistically be achieved with the time and resources available without allowing perfection to stall progress. In this episode of She Said Privacy/He Said Security, Jodi and Justin Daniels speak with Chris Tarbell, Chief Privacy Officer at VERSANT Media, about building effective privacy programs through relationships and collaboration. Chris explains how his experience as both in-house and outside counsel shaped his ability to understand business objectives, advocate for resources, and communicate the value of privacy. He shares insights on the cross-disciplinary nature of privacy work in the media industry, lessons from building a program during a major corporate spinoff, and the importance of creating a people-first privacy team capable of handling unfamiliar business challenges. Chris also explains why bringing some fun to privacy work can make a program more effective.
Welcome to the episode where we openly acknowledge that this isn't, by definition, a Nicolas Cage campaign, but then speak at length about Nicolas Cage anyway. McDonald's said no to Disney. Burger King said yes. And a 90s fast food war was born. Before Happy Meal toys and Disney-themed cups became background noise, a $40 million promotion disaster, a Splash Mountain delay, and a scrappy competitor nearly changed the entire landscape of Disney marketing. This is the story of how two burger giants fought for the right to put a mouse in your kid's meal — and how that rivalry shaped the toys, the nostalgia, and the partnerships we still see today. Marvel Studios finally gave us something to whet our appetites regarding Avengers: Doomsday as they dropped the first full-length trailer on Monday. Old and new favorite heroes are coming together to band against the biggest threat they've ever encountered, Doctor Victor Von Doom.Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated film The Odyssey premiered last weekend to a box office best for the savant director, opening to $264.1 million globally. With a stacked A-list cast, Nolan's flair and drive for practical filmmaking, and a huge push to see the movie in IMAX (since it was filmed that way,) this entry to Nolan's repertoire has been as long-awaited as Odysseus' return to Ithaca. And clearly…the people are liking what they see. For 2026, The Odyssey has the third best opening weekend behind Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II is being delayed once again and will now open in theaters on February 18, 2028. That release date is nearly six years after the March 2022 opening of The Batman. Reeves announced the new opening date on Vimeo accompanied by the first camera test footage of Robert Pattinson's return as the Dark Knight. Pattinson began filming during the press tour for The Odyssey, which he was also part of. At an appearance at Fanatics Fest 2026, Ryan Reynolds confirmed that there will be another Deadpool movie at some point in the future, although he did not provide any more details past that confirmation. After calling New York City home for almost 90 years, Marvel Comics will be relocating to Burbank, California, the current headquarters of Marvel Studios and corporate parent, The Walt Disney Company. Stephen Wacker, a respected veteran comics editor who also earned an Emmy nomination for his work in the company's forays in animation, has been named Marvel's new editor-in-chief, replacing outgoing chief C.B. Cebulski, who had steered the division since 2017. The move also leaves NYC without a major comics publisher, as DC Comics relocated to California in 2015. Amazon Prime Video‘s God of War series will recast the starring role of Kratos following an injury to the original actor Ryan Hurst on set that he suffered in late June. While performing a stunt, Hurst tore his bicep and had to undergo surgery. His recovery timetable puts him out until early 2027 at best. Sources tell Deadline that four episodes had been fully completed at the time of the incident. Colman Domingo and Tony-nominated director Robert O'Hara are in talks to co-write a live action film based on Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog for Disney. It is not described as a live-action remake of The Princess and the Frog, but rather a story inspired by the original film. In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Kevin Feige spoke on the Mahershala Ali Blade reboot that has yet to materialize saying "I am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn't get off the ground with Mahershala." He was also asked about Adam Driver as Magneto rumors and responded “It's no secret we'd like to [work with Driver], but it's a tradition to Zoom with him, and then he passes. That's a long-lived tradition."
Join your tour guides Jason Thomason, Francince Chochrane and Stan Solo as they discuss the good, the bad and the whys of some current ride redos like Tiana's and Mission Breakout and dish on some current rumors. In this episode of The Learning & Development Podcast, David James is joined by Tracie Cantu to discuss her book Running L&D Like a Business. Tracie shares the L&D leadership experience that shaped her perspective and what compelled her to write the book. They explore what it truly means to run L&D like a business and why this mindset is so often missing, before diving into the Learning Operations Business Model and its four core components, and the three buckets of the Learning Operations Blueprint. Tracie unpacks the important distinction between the "customer" and the "consumer" of learning, explains what good governance looks like without it becoming bureaucracy, and makes the case for prioritising people and process before technology. Tracie also shares her advocacy for a go-to-market strategy for internal learning initiatives and closes with practical advice for listeners on where and how to begin applying these frameworks in their own organisations. Take your L&D to the next level Take advantage of thousands of hours of analysis. Hundreds of conversations with industry innovators and 25+ years of hands-on global L&D leadership. It's all distilled into one framework to help you level up L&D. Access the L&D Maturity Model here - https://360learning.com/maturity-model KEY TAKEAWAYS L&D's challenge isn't talent or effort, it´s a weak operating model - regardless of the industry. Treating L&D as a business function is what fixes this problem. Every initiative must tie clearly to helping the organisation make money, save money or reduce risk, while still delivering a fit‑for‑purpose learner experience. High‑impact programmes are launched, not just built apply go‑to‑market thinking, marketing assets and find champions to demonstrate the benefits so that your great work doesn't become shelfware. BEST MOMENTS "Our job is to help them make money, save money, and reduce risk - if we´re not, then it´s not aligned to the business goals." "Build it and they will come. That is bulls**t. They will not come....because we are not marketing it." "We should be anchoring every training we have to that high customer value." We have got a LOT to cover this week and honestly the news just keeps coming. Let's get into it. First up, Magic of Disney Animation finally has an opening date and it is September 14th. This is the brand new experience coming to the reimagined Animation Courtyard at Hollywood Studios and it sounds like a really solid lineup. You've got Drawn to Wonderland which is a playground experience, Off the Page for character meetings, Olaf Draws which is a drawing class (yes please), the Once Upon a Studio Theater, and more. This feels like a real destination area and we are genuinely excited to check it out. Quick financial note for anyone who follows the business side of things: The Walt Disney Company drops their 3rd Quarter financial results on Wednesday August 5th at 8:30am Eastern via live webcast. Worth keeping an eye on. Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party fans, heads up. October 13th and August 18th are the next two dates to sell out and they are moving faster than last year. If you are on the fence about grabbing tickets, stop waiting. Also interesting, both Beak and Barrel and Geo-82 went to walk-up lists last week, which is actually a first for those spots. The party crowd is hungry. Now let's talk D23 because things are getting really exciting. Neil Patrick Harris is going to host the Experiences Showcase and honestly the format sounds amazing. It's inspired by the Carousel of Progress, he'll be guiding the whole show, chatting with Imagineers and storytellers, and there are supposed to be announcements, special performances, and surprises. We are so ready. Also at D23, Leslie Iwerks is debuting a brand new documentary focused on Disney Parks. She made the Imagineering Story and Disneyland Handcrafted, so the pedigree here is outstanding. We also want to take a moment to acknowledge that her father Don Iwerks recently passed away at 96. Don was an absolute legend. He developed the 360 degree Circle Vision camera, built the film equipment used at the 1964 World's Fair, engineered the 3D film and effects for Captain EO, and built the projection system for Star Tours. What a career. What a legacy. And then there is the Space Mountain rumor that has everyone buzzing. Word is the attraction could be getting a very major refurbishment, potentially including a full track replacement, updated audio, and a redesigned ride vehicle that seats two across instead of single file. Nothing confirmed yet but this might be something we hear more about at D23 next month. So yeah, a packed episode. Drop your thoughts in the comments below. What are you most excited about? In this episode of The Learning & Development Podcast, David James is joined by JD Dillon to celebrate the launch of his new book, The Frontline Enablement Playbook. They explore why the traditional L&D toolkit often fails the deskless workforce and how JD's experience at Disney helped shape a more grounded, practical philosophy for supporting those whose "office" is a shop floor, a hospital wing, or a delivery vehicle. JD reflects on the shift from digital accessibility to true operational enablement, arguing that L&D must stop asking how to get workers onto a desktop and start asking how to deliver value in the flow of demanding, high-pressure work. They delve into the impact of AI on frontline development, the necessity of data-driven strategies, and how to empower overstretched frontline managers to support their teams. JD provides a roadmap for evolving L&D from a corporate function into a vital support system that recognises skills, respects time, and drives genuine organisational performance. Take your L&D to the next level Take advantage of thousands of hours of analysis. Hundreds of conversations with industry innovators and 25+ years of hands-on global L&D leadership. Build genuine community - start by helping overwhelmed managers succeed. Technology and AI only add value when they're grounded in real workflows, hardware constraints, and operational data. Leverage the rich data around frontline roles. BEST MOMENTS “I'm not here to help people learn, I'm here to help people do - to help the organisation achieve by the everyday performance of the people who are doing the heavy lifting.” “The strongest frontline teams work in service of one another, in service of a shared success, in service of a pride in doing the job well and doing the job well together.” JD Dillon Bio JD Dillon began his career on the frontline, leading teams in theme parks, movie theatres, and contact centres. These roles shaped his understanding of how people learn, perform, and succeed in fast-paced environments. Over the past 25 years, JD has become a leading voice in frontline enablement, holding operations, marketing, and talent development roles with global organisations including Disney, AMC, and Kaplan. He has helped shape strategy, technology, and services that empower millions of frontline workers across industries such as retail, food service, hospitality, logistics, and financial services. A respected author, content creator, and keynote speaker, JD advises organisations on frontline performance strategy, ecosystem design, and AI-enabled solutions. In this special episode of World of Wishes, we chat with Mikayla Beatty, a wish alum whose journey represents a historic milestone in Make A Wish history: Mikayla was the 150,000th wish ever granted by The Walt Disney Company. Now a college sophomore studying theater, Mikayla reflects on her path from a creative, faith driven childhood to a life altering cancer diagnosis at just 13 years old. What began as a lingering cough quickly turned into a diagnosis of Stage IV Hodgkin's lymphoma, launching her into an intense and fast moving treatment plan on the oncology floor—right as the world was shutting down due to COVID 19. Mikayla shares with remarkable clarity what it was like to face cancer as a teenager who fully understood the gravity of the diagnosis, the physical toll of chemotherapy, and the fear of losing her voice as a singer. She speaks candidly about anticipatory nausea, isolation during treatment, and the hope provided through a clinical trial that ultimately shortened her chemotherapy and helped heal her body. Then came the wish—one that unfolded in two unforgettable chapters. In April, Mikayla was invited to Walt Disney World Resort to mark Disney's 150,000th wish, where she rode in the Magic Kingdom parade, received VIP access throughout the parks, and became one of the very few people in the world to stay overnight inside Cinderella Castle. Months later, Disney and Make A Wish extended the magic even further, inviting Mikayla back to perform at the Once Upon A Wish Ball, complete with professional coaching, recording sessions, choreography, and mentorship from Disney performers and producers. For Mikayla, the wish went beyond magic—it restored purpose. It helped her rediscover why she endured what she endured and confirmed her calling to use music to heal, inspire, and uplift others. Today, she carries that experience forward as both an alum and an ambassador for hope, resilience, and the life changing power of a wish. The United States of America turns 250 this July 4, 2026. In many ways, Disney embodies, reflects, and propels American culture, and Walt Disney himself was a patriotic American who volunteered in World War II, admired Abraham Lincoln, and created stories based on American lore. Today, many Disney Parks experiences celebrate various aspects of American history, geography, and psychology. For this special two-part episode, we share our favorite patriotic experiences at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, including many that might surprise you. The Walt Disney Company is the most successful enterprise ever created for monetizing human nostalgia. Today it's the king of global entertainment, holding the intellectual property rights to the childhood memories of billions of people (including, likely, all of you) and is a reliable, predictable profitable business. But it didn't start that way.During Walt's era, Disney operated like an unhinged moonshot factory, blowing its finances on one seemingly crazy project after another, like the very first feature-length animated film or a theme park inspired by Walt's fascination with model trains (spoiler: Disneyland). Walt's relentless ambition to bet the company over and over again not only created some of the most monumental artistic achievements of the 20th century (Snow White, Fantasia, Disney Imagineering), but also resulted in the accidental invention of the modern “flywheel” business model. In this episode, we tell the story of the ultimate marriage of art, commerce, and engineering — The Walt Disney Company: Walt's Era.Sponsors:Many thanks to our fantastic Spring '26 Season partners:J.P.
