In this episode of The Learning & Development Podcast, David James is joined by Tracie Cantu to discuss her book Running L&D Like a Business. Tracie shares the L&D leadership experience that shaped her perspective and what compelled her to write the book. They explore what it truly means to run L&D like a business and why this mindset is so often missing, before diving into the Learning Operations Business Model and its four core components, and the three buckets of the Learning Operations Blueprint. Tracie unpacks the important distinction between the "customer" and the "consumer" of learning, explains what good governance looks like without it becoming bureaucracy, and makes the case for prioritising people and process before technology. Tracie also shares her advocacy for a go-to-market strategy for internal learning initiatives and closes with practical advice for listeners on where and how to begin applying these frameworks in their own organisations. Take your L&D to the next level Take advantage of thousands of hours of analysis. Hundreds of conversations with industry innovators and 25+ years of hands-on global L&D leadership. It's all distilled into one framework to help you level up L&D. Access the L&D Maturity Model here - https://360learning.com/maturity-model KEY TAKEAWAYS L&D's challenge isn't talent or effort, it´s a weak operating model - regardless of the industry.  Treating L&D as a business function is what fixes this problem. Every initiative must tie clearly to helping the organisation make money, save money or reduce risk, while still delivering a fit‑for‑purpose learner experience.   High‑impact programmes are launched, not just built apply go‑to‑market thinking, marketing assets and find champions to demonstrate the benefits so that your great work doesn't become shelfware.   BEST MOMENTS "Our job is to help them make money, save money, and reduce risk - if we´re not, then it´s not aligned to the business goals."   "Build it and they will come. That is bulls**t. They will not come....because we are not marketing it."   "We should be anchoring every training we have to that high customer value." Tracie Cantu Bio Tracie Cantu, MHRM, CPTD is a recognised expert in learning operations and technology with more than two decades of experience leading and transforming enterprise L&D functions. Her career spans aviation, government, retail, and tech, including senior roles such as Director of Learning Technology at Whole Foods Market (Amazon), Head of Learning Ecosystems at Meta, and L&D leadership at Atlassian. Today she serves as CEO and Chief Learning Strategist at Your CLO, where she partners with CHROs, COOs, and senior L&D leaders to modernise learning operations, optimise technology ecosystems, and implement scalable processes that drive measurable business impact. We have got a LOT to cover this week and honestly the news just keeps coming. Let's get into it. First up, Magic of Disney Animation finally has an opening date and it is September 14th. This is the brand new experience coming to the reimagined Animation Courtyard at Hollywood Studios and it sounds like a really solid lineup. You've got Drawn to Wonderland which is a playground experience, Off the Page for character meetings, Olaf Draws which is a drawing class (yes please), the Once Upon a Studio Theater, and more. This feels like a real destination area and we are genuinely excited to check it out. Quick financial note for anyone who follows the business side of things: The Walt Disney Company drops their 3rd Quarter financial results on Wednesday August 5th at 8:30am Eastern via live webcast. Worth keeping an eye on. Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party fans, heads up. October 13th and August 18th are the next two dates to sell out and they are moving faster than last year. If you are on the fence about grabbing tickets, stop waiting. Also interesting, both Beak and Barrel and Geo-82 went to walk-up lists last week, which is actually a first for those spots. The party crowd is hungry. Now let's talk D23 because things are getting really exciting. Neil Patrick Harris is going to host the Experiences Showcase and honestly the format sounds amazing. It's inspired by the Carousel of Progress, he'll be guiding the whole show, chatting with Imagineers and storytellers, and there are supposed to be announcements, special performances, and surprises. We are so ready. Also at D23, Leslie Iwerks is debuting a brand new documentary focused on Disney Parks. She made the Imagineering Story and Disneyland Handcrafted, so the pedigree here is outstanding. We also want to take a moment to acknowledge that her father Don Iwerks recently passed away at 96. Don was an absolute legend. He developed the 360 degree Circle Vision camera, built the film equipment used at the 1964 World's Fair, engineered the 3D film and effects for Captain EO, and built the projection system for Star Tours. What a career. What a legacy. And then there is the Space Mountain rumor that has everyone buzzing. Word is the attraction could be getting a very major refurbishment, potentially including a full track replacement, updated audio, and a redesigned ride vehicle that seats two across instead of single file. Nothing confirmed yet but this might be something we hear more about at D23 next month. So yeah, a packed episode. Drop your thoughts in the comments below. What are you most excited about? Are you ready for Magic of Disney Animation? What do you think about the Space Mountain rumors? Let us know! In this episode of The Learning & Development Podcast, David James is joined by JD Dillon to celebrate the launch of his new book, The Frontline Enablement Playbook. They explore why the traditional L&D toolkit often fails the deskless workforce and how JD's experience at Disney helped shape a more grounded, practical philosophy for supporting those whose "office" is a shop floor, a hospital wing, or a delivery vehicle. JD reflects on the shift from digital accessibility to true operational enablement, arguing that L&D must stop asking how to get workers onto a desktop and start asking how to deliver value in the flow of demanding, high-pressure work. They delve into the impact of AI on frontline development, the necessity of data-driven strategies, and how to empower overstretched frontline managers to support their teams. JD provides a roadmap for evolving L&D from a corporate function into a vital support system that recognises skills, respects time, and drives genuine organisational performance. Take your L&D to the next level Take advantage of thousands of hours of analysis. Hundreds of conversations with industry innovators and 25+ years of hands-on global L&D leadership. It's all distilled into one framework to help you level up L&D. Access the L&D Maturity Model here - https://360learning.com/maturity-model KEY TAKEAWAYS Frontline enablement means shifting L&D's focus from learning outputs to helping people do their jobs in time‑starved, heavily measured operations.   Build genuine community - start by helping overwhelmed managers succeed.   Technology and AI only add value when they're grounded in real workflows, hardware constraints, and operational data.   Leverage the rich data around frontline roles. BEST MOMENTS “I'm not here to help people learn, I'm here to help people do - to help the organisation achieve by the everyday performance of the people who are doing the heavy lifting.” “The strongest frontline teams work in service of one another, in service of a shared success, in service of a pride in doing the job well and doing the job well together.” JD Dillon Bio JD Dillon began his career on the frontline, leading teams in theme parks, movie theatres, and contact centres. These roles shaped his understanding of how people learn, perform, and succeed in fast-paced environments. Over the past 25 years, JD has become a leading voice in frontline enablement, holding operations, marketing, and talent development roles with global organisations including Disney, AMC, and Kaplan. He has helped shape strategy, technology, and services that empower millions of frontline workers across industries such as retail, food service, hospitality, logistics, and financial services. A respected author, content creator, and keynote speaker, JD advises organisations on frontline performance strategy, ecosystem design, and AI-enabled solutions. Disney Connected its own worlds: Descendants, Once Upon a Time, House of Mouse and More! For years, Disney fans have obsessively hunted for Easter eggs, building "Grand Unification Theories" to prove that every animated classic is connected. But while fans were busy connecting dots in the background, Disney was quietly building something much bigger: an official shared universe. In this episode of Synergy Loves Company, we're moving beyond the hidden cameos and looking at the times Disney actually put their characters together on screen. We start with the cult-classic Saturday morning crossover, House of Mouse, where Mickey played host to every era of Disney animation under one roof. We'll explore the high-stakes world of Once Upon a Time, where ABC transformed Storybrooke into a live-action landing spot for modern fairytales. Then, we look at the massive success of Descendants, the franchise that turned the next generation of villains into a multi-million dollar synergy machine. From the early days of Disney on Ice to the boardroom decisions that created the Disney Princess franchise, we're breaking down how fan demand forced Disney to finally admit the truth: the shared universe is real. In this special episode of World of Wishes, we chat with Mikayla Beatty, a wish alum whose journey represents a historic milestone in Make A Wish history: Mikayla was the 150,000th wish ever granted by The Walt Disney Company. Now a college sophomore studying theater, Mikayla reflects on her path from a creative, faith driven childhood to a life altering cancer diagnosis at just 13 years old. What began as a lingering cough quickly turned into a diagnosis of Stage IV Hodgkin's lymphoma, launching her into an intense and fast moving treatment plan on the oncology floor—right as the world was shutting down due to COVID 19. Mikayla shares with remarkable clarity what it was like to face cancer as a teenager who fully understood the gravity of the diagnosis, the physical toll of chemotherapy, and the fear of losing her voice as a singer. She speaks candidly about anticipatory nausea, isolation during treatment, and the hope provided through a clinical trial that ultimately shortened her chemotherapy and helped heal her body. Then came the wish—one that unfolded in two unforgettable chapters. In April, Mikayla was invited to Walt Disney World Resort to mark Disney's 150,000th wish, where she rode in the Magic Kingdom parade, received VIP access throughout the parks, and became one of the very few people in the world to stay overnight inside Cinderella Castle. Months later, Disney and Make A Wish extended the magic even further, inviting Mikayla back to perform at the Once Upon A Wish Ball, complete with professional coaching, recording sessions, choreography, and mentorship from Disney performers and producers. For Mikayla, the wish went beyond magic—it restored purpose. It helped her rediscover why she endured what she endured and confirmed her calling to use music to heal, inspire, and uplift others. Today, she carries that experience forward as both an alum and an ambassador for hope, resilience, and the life changing power of a wish. Looking for daily inspiration?  Get a quote from the top leaders in the industry in your inbox every morning.   Alyse Sklover is the Senior Manager of Events and Partnerships at ROLLER. Her career in the attractions industry began at The Walt Disney Company, where she worked in merchandise and entertainment in Tomorrowland before transitioning into the music industry. After studying at Rosen College of Hospitality Management, she returned to attractions at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, later joining IAAPA during the pandemic as the FEC and LBE liaison. Following a role with Escapology, she joined ROLLER, where she now focuses on events and community marketing initiatives that strengthen collaboration across the attractions industry. In this interview, Alyse talks about “nail it before you scale it,” collaboration as our power-up, and letting your guests be mad. Nail it before you scale it “Make sure that your focus really is on nailing it before you scale it.” Alyse emphasized that attractions often become so focused on creating memorable “wow” moments that they overlook the operational basics guests expect. Drawing from her experience at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, she explained that safety, cleanliness, and consistency must come before entertainment enhancements. She pointed out that no amount of “pixie dust” can overcome overflowing trash cans, unsafe walkways, or poor food quality. She also connected this philosophy to larger entertainment brands. While she admires the creativity and energy of many organizations, she believes the industry sometimes becomes overly focused on spectacle instead of operational fundamentals. Alyse argued that once a company reliably delivers on core expectations, the added entertainment elements become much more impactful. Collaboration as our power-up “Collaboration is my absolute favorite thing. And the power up for sure, it's what keeps this industry going.” Alyse described community marketing as a way to strengthen the already collaborative nature of the attractions industry. Rather than building competing platforms or sales-focused events, her goal is to make existing resources more accessible to operators who are often stretched thin. She discussed creating regional events, roundtables, and resource hubs that help operators connect, learn, and support one another. She believes attractions are unique because competitors openly share ideas, strategies, and best practices. Alyse shared a story about one roller skating operator willingly allowing another operator in the same state to copy her liability waiver because she simply wanted to help. She noted that poor experiences at one attraction can negatively impact perceptions of the entire industry, which motivates operators to collectively raise standards rather than protect information. Letting your guests be mad “Just let me be upset. I'm not mad at you. This is not your failure. You're trying to make it right, but just let me be upset.” Guest recovery is one of Alyse's biggest passions, and much of her philosophy was shaped during her time at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, where rocket launches could be scrubbed moments before liftoff. She explained that guests often traveled internationally and built entire vacations around launches, making those emotional disappointments incredibly difficult to recover from. Instead of immediately trying to “fix” emotions, she learned the importance of first allowing guests to feel disappointed and heard. Alyse also stressed the importance of empowering frontline employees to resolve issues quickly. Crew members were given tools and recovery options they could offer immediately without waiting for management approval. She believes silence and delays only escalate frustration, while empathy and decisive action build trust. In many cases, she argued that a well-handled recovery can create a more loyal guest than an experience where nothing went wrong at all.   Alyse can be reached on LinkedIn, as well as through ROLLER's website. The Walt Disney Company is the most successful enterprise ever created for monetizing human nostalgia. Today it's the king of global entertainment, holding the intellectual property rights to the childhood memories of billions of people (including, likely, all of you) and is a reliable, predictable profitable business. But it didn't start that way.During Walt's era, Disney operated like an unhinged moonshot factory, blowing its finances on one seemingly crazy project after another, like the very first feature-length animated film or a theme park inspired by Walt's fascination with model trains (spoiler: Disneyland). Walt's relentless ambition to bet the company over and over again not only created some of the most monumental artistic achievements of the 20th century (Snow White, Fantasia, Disney Imagineering), but also resulted in the accidental invention of the modern “flywheel” business model. In this episode of The Learning & Development Podcast, David James is joined by Egle Vinauskaite to discuss the launch of her highly anticipated follow-up to the ‘Race for Impact' report. They explore the core objectives behind this new research and the methodology Egle used to capture the reality of today's learning landscape. Egle reflects on the "Transformation Triangle" - a core concept of the report - unpacking its components and arguing for a definitive move away from traditional, legacy training models. They delve into the practicalities of how L&D leaders can navigate these strategic paths, the organizational blockers or "drags" that routinely stall progress, and what it truly means when Egle writes that "influence is not a consolation prize." Egle provides a roadmap for teams facing leadership pushback, offering actionable advice on how to break out of a strictly content-focused lane and elevate L&D into a high-impact, influential business driver. Take your L&D to the next level Take advantage of thousands of hours of analysis. Hundreds of conversations with industry innovators and 25+ years of hands-on global L&D leadership. It's all distilled into one framework to help you level up L&D. Access the L&D Maturity Model here - https://360learning.com/maturity-model KEY TAKEAWAYS AI is rapidly taking over traditional L&D tasks, so L&D must redefine their role rather than just produce content faster. For L&D, the future lies in 3 areas: becoming a skills authority, an enablement partner and/or tackling performance as a systems problem. L&D's ability to change is shaped by the organisation around it. Reporting lines, what leaders expect from “the training team,” and the skills the L&D team has will all determine how far beyond content L&D can really move. Building credibility by being involved early when business problems are defined, enables L&D to influence decisions and outcomes more powerfully. BEST MOMENTS “The transformation triangle is a strategic framework for L&D leaders…it maps the territory beyond content focused L&D.” “Understand the boundaries that you're operating within. Not that you cannot massage those boundaries over time.” Egle Vinauskaite Bio Egle Vinauskaite brings extensive expertise in learning, behaviour, and technology, working with both global enterprises and emerging edtech innovators. Her background spans AI, XR, mobile learning, digital platforms, and blended learning design, giving her a unique perspective on how technology is reshaping organisational learning and the future of work. As both an advisor and researcher, she helps L&D teams integrate AI into their operations and prepare workforces with the skills needed for effective adoption.
