This was a nice Monday crossword, the 17th by Adam Aaronson, who is more partial to Saturday but we're glad to see him wander over to this half of the week. Jean tore through the puzzle so quickly her iPad caught fire, whereas Mike's was never at risk. The clues were mainly Monday fare, but we did have the fabulous 2D, End of some sentences, PAROLE (walked right into that one!); the high-falutin' 39D, Aforementioned, VERYSAME; and an apt description of this VERYSAME podcast, 55D, Not interrupted by commercials, ADFREE. In addition to today's crossword, we are proud to announce our latest JAMCOTWA. If you've listened to last week's episodes it won't be any surprise, but just in case we won't spoil it here: listen in for the Big Reveal.Show note imagery: HAYAO Miyazaki, who recently won an Academy Award for The Boy and the Heron. We love feedback! In this video, we explore the remaining four powers according to Bruce Lee: Reason, Emotion, Conscience, and Willpower. Bruce Lee understood the importance of affirmations to encourage a growth mindset. We also explore how to create like a god, using our subconscious mind to achieve our goals.

These are the seven ideas he wrote on small note cards and carried with him at all times: Memory, Subconscious Mind, Imagination, Reason, Emotion, Conscience, and Willpower. These 7 ideas are part of a whole system of well-being and self-cultivation that Bruce developed. And they work together as a harmonious ecosystem. Today, we discuss the first three ideas: Memory, Subconscious Mind, and Imagination.**1st Affirmation: Memory** “Recognizing the value of an alert mind, and an alert memory, I will encourage mine to become alert by taking care to impress it clearly with all thoughts I wish to recall and by associating those thoughts with related subjects which I may recall to mind frequently.” Bruce Lee on memory: “Not memory for memory's sake, not accumulation of knowledge, but synthesis and application.”**2nd Affirmation: Subconscious Mind** “Reorganizing the influence of my subconscious mind over my power of will, I shall take care to submit to it a clear and definite picture of my major purpose in life and all minor purposes leading to my major purpose, and I shall keep this picture constantly before my subconscious mind by repeating it daily.”**3rd Affirmation: Imagination** “Recognizing the need for sound plans and ideas for the attainment of my desires. I will develop my imagination by calling upon it daily for help in the formation of my plans.” “Creative intuition opens the wellsprings within man, activates the inner light, and is free and limitless.”**Take Action:** Create your own affirmations and write them down on a 3x5 card. They can be your own ideas or quotes you find inspiring. Carry them around with you for a week or a month and read them out loud to yourself each day.

As always, the October MOTM is horror themed, but for a time, the horror was our communities indecision. Twice films tied for the selection, executive action resolved the dilemma and "Re-Animator" from 1985 is our film this week. A horror film filled with gore and comedy seems like a perfect choice, but a couple of the guests were less than enthusiastic, and it may surprise you as to who. If your favorite band of the 1980s is Talking Heads, you are going to love this movie. It may be classified as a zombie film, but it is closer to the mad scientist trope of horror, in spite of the large number of living dead. Bruce Abbot, Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton star in the film, but David Gale may be the antenna topper that makes it memorable.

Ladies and gentlemen and everyone between and behind and above… schnallen Sie sich an! Johannes… komm schon.

In this episode of the Upduck Podcast, we sit down with George Parker of Bluebird Waterfowl to talk innovation, duck hunting gear, and how changing the way you use spinning wing decoys can completely transform your hunts. From crumble cookies to steelhead fishing stories, we eventually dive deep into the science of waterfowl behavior, the Animator, and the brand-new floating wings that are shaking up the duck hunting world. George explains how Bluebird Waterfowl is rethinking spinner wings with new shapes, sizes, and colors designed to match changing conditions in the marsh—just like bass fishermen change lures. We cover why wings that float are a game-changer, the importance of motion and sound in finishing ducks, and how hunters can adapt to smarter, late-season birds. If you're passionate about duck hunting, spinning wing decoys, or just love hearing the stories and science behind waterfowl hunting innovation, this episode delivers. Whether you're chasing teal in early September or mallards in the late season, you'll want to hear how Bluebird Waterfowl is bringing a new edge to the hunt. It's an especially animated episode because Mark welcomes the talented animator, illustrator, and author Peter Raymundo on the show! The two of them rewind to the '90s and early 2000s when Peter was an animator at Disney, working on classic hit films Mulan, Lilo & Stitch, The Lion King, Pocahontas, The Emperor's New Groove, and more! Learn how Peter was plucked out of college to work for Mickey, and he explains what roles did what work in the drawing room. You can find him at conventions, just like Mark did earlier this year. https://www.raymundoarts.com/test-page

Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) is a strange, young medical student who will break as many pencils as it takes for you to understand that dead cells can come back. West moves in with another medical student, Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott), and he experiments with green glowing serums and Dan's dead cat. Dan is dating Megan (Barbara Crampton), who thinks West is a major creep. During these scientific shenanigans, the two doctors-to-be turn Megan's dad, Dean Halsey (Robert Sampson), into a re-animated ghoul. Whoopsie daisy! In the backdrop of all of this, Dr. Carl Hill (David Gale) loses his head and attempts to steal all of West's work. Also, Dr. Hill is trying to get mad freaky with Megan! RTS looks into the void and sees Cthulhu, and it looks kind of adorable. Jeremy, La-Mar and Collin go on a re-animating spree. Everything is coming back! Where's the security guard for this? “Cat dead, details later.”

Aaron and I met after I got to see a screening of his recent short animated film Snow Bear. I knew about Aaron's achievements from participating in some of the biggest animated movies of all time. I expected to talk about art, creativity, and expression, topics I love. We did, after first hitting on leadership, especially empathy. He started by sharing his growth as an animator and director at Disney. Soon enough we dove into talking about the overlap between leadership and things he loved about his career: directing, teamwork, self-expression, and empathy. We talked about being generous, what it takes to get the best out of a team, and how it feels when you do. We distinguished leadership from authority and how many people confuse them. You'll hear we both enjoyed the richness and depth of our exploration of similar passions from different directions. Plus you'll hear the back story Snow Bear that gives it its richness and depth.Aaron's web page Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
