In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by Naval Air Station (NAS) Lemoore LT Josh Tessone (again), AWSC Jesse Peterson and HM1 Tyler Hodge.  They tell us all about the Creek fire in CA that earned them a Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC).  They tell us of their first rescue during this crazy event at 11,500ft where they flew through thick smoke and ash to rescue a couple hikers that got surrounded by the fire. The next day they were called out again for more people that were surrounded by the fire. In this episode of The Real ResQ, Mel and I recap my biggest rescue where I earned my Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). An explosion on the Fishing Vessel (F/V) Galaxy which crippled the vessel in the middle of the Bering Sea. Today we hear the combat story of Yonel “Yogi” Dorelis, a retired and long-time helicopter pilot who served in the Marine Corps, Navy, Army, and Air Force. While in uniform, Yogi flew a variety of aircraft and mission profiles, but spent a considerable amount of time flying Combat Search and Rescue for the Air Force in the HH-60, including early in the war in Afghanistan. In fact, during this time, Yogi earned a Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) with V Device for his life saving efforts in Operation Anaconda, a mission that's near and dear to my heart because I later went on to serve with several of the Apache pilots who were there at the time. Beyond earning the coveted DFC, Yogi also accumulated 5,500 hours of flight time, approximately 500 of that in combat. He's credited with saving 70+ military lives and approximately 300 more in his civilian flight career as part of an EMS crew, which he does to this day. It was a blast to sit down with another aviator and a CSAR one at that, where it remains clear that no matter what airframe you flew, all pilots experience similar mishaps, near death experiences, laughs, and red tape along the way. Autorotation - A fun and scary flight profile that's practiced regularly by all pilots by which you either simulate or truly kill engine power and, which descending out of the sky, maintain a minimal amount of drag to slow your descent created by the main rotor blade and then, when very close to touching the ground, pull in a bit of collective to provide a slightly softer landing. Flt Lt Sidney Stevens was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) during WWII raids bombing industrial Germany in 1943. "This thing was bumping up and down and sometimes you could lose 600 feet and you'd just drop vertically ... "I came out of the clouds and the German fighter was there waiting for me ... DFC citation: Pilot Officer Sidney George STEVENS (149614), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 57 Squadron. This officer has displayed great skill and determination throughout his tour of operations. One night in October, 1943, he piloted an aircraft detailed to attack Leipzig. On the outward flight violent electrical storms were encountered. Although the air speed indicator became useless and other equipment was rendered temporarily unserviceable, Pilot Officer Stevens went on to complete his mission. His persistence in the face of trying circumstances was most praiseworthy. Squadron Leader Geoffrey Wellum DFC is a British Battle of Britain fighter pilot and author. Aged eighteen, he signed up on a short-service commission with the Royal Air Force in August 1939. He saw extensive action during the Battle of Britain and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in 1941 in recognition of gallantry displayed in flying operations against the enemy. On 11 August 1942, Wellum led eight Spitfires launched from the carrier HMS Furious to reinforce the fighter complement at Luqa airfield on Malta. David Greville-Heygate was one of the few men who served in both the army and the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, but it was in the sky that he really earned his stripes. Stalking the skies flying photo-reconnaissance missions with No. 16 Squadron over Northern France, he was to win the illustrious and highly coveted Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). Another highlight saw him in action in the skies above the French coastline in preparation for the D-Day landings, taking photographs that would provide the allies with essential intelligence upon which to base their plans.
