This season we've been exploring the concept of mechanism in reproductive biology. We've chatted with scientists from across disciplines who are working to better understand how sperm, eggs, and embryos work. Over the next three episodes, we'll be exploring the idea of mechanism itself. We'll learn how the historical practice of biology has shaped the way we think about mechanisms today, how computing metaphors might supercede the machine metaphors that dominate in molecular biology, and how the fields of biology and physics might be on course to collide in the coming decades.   Today, I have the pleasure of chatting with the renown philosopher of biology, Dr. Dan Nicholson of George Mason University. Dan is a talented science communicator and recent author of the book “What is Life, Revisited”, in which he analyzes the motivations of Erwin Shrodinger's famous 1944 lecture series and its impact on the nascent field of molecular biology. Dan's introspective writing has changed the way I think about biology. It was a real joy to get to have this conversation with him. Our far-reaching conversation covered the role of philosophy in the practice of science, how and how not to think about organisms as machines, and the role of random variation in biological systems. Link to SSR Website: https://ssr.org/Link to Dr. Nicholson's Faculty Page: https://philosophy.gmu.edu/people/dnichoBook Link: "What is Life, Revisited": https://www.cambridge.org/core/elements/abs/what-is-life-revisited/E6B3EA136720CF50C9480ADB8F41A6F4

What does the research actually say about job sharing — and what does it tell us about the future of the workforce? In this episode of Jobshare Stories, we're joined by Dr Dawn H Nicholson, business psychologist and honorary academic, whose career spans Morgan Stanley, PricewaterhouseCoopers and the University of Kent. Dawn is one of the few academics in the UK to have conducted detailed research lens onto job sharing — and her findings are fascinating. In this episode, we talk about what older and younger workers really want from work and how jobsharing can create a solution that delivers for both; the power of the successor share model and what needs to change to make jobsharing a reality.  A thought-provoking, research-backed conversation about why job sharing isn't just good for individuals — it's good for organisations, good for the economy, and good for society. Editor's note: Beacon was created in 1913 from Matteawan and Fishkill Landing. Divers hired by an insurance company searched the river just south of Newburgh for a canal boat that sank with a cargo of marble valued at $8,000 [about $250,000 today]. According to The Cold Spring Recorder, "some fiend in human shape" broke into the Newburgh Telegraph and stole several cases of type. The First National Bank of Fishkill Landing installed a chronometer [timer] lock on its safe. John Hannon, a switchman at Dutchess Junction, mangled his hand while coupling cars. The Hudson River Railroad Co. began construction on a brick-and-iron depot at Fishkill Landing that measured 28 feet wide by 85 feet long. William Thompson of Matteawan invented a rubber saddle pad. John Schlosser, principal of the Fishkill Landing school, was admitted to the bar. Several gentlemen, "highly distinguished in their professions in New York," according to a news account, offered to give an entertainment at Fishkill Landing to benefit the Howland library. Seventeen cows on their way to Orange County via the Newburgh ferry plunged into the river at Long Dock, but all were rescued. According to the Newburgh Telegraph, William Daly, while drifting for shad, caught a sturgeon weighing 310 pounds. Sixty-four iron columns arrived for the first story of a weaving mill at Glenham to support an iron girder running the length of the building. A young man named Timothy Ryan fell from the Glenham bridge while drunk and was not expected to live. In its annual report, Highland Hospital in Matteawan said that it had treated 15 boys and men for a total of 671 days. Two remained in the hospital. No one had died. Its receipts were $4,400 [$137,000], of which $555 [$17,000] was collected by 20 churches on Hospital Sunday. Each patient cost $1.26 [$39] per day, including food and medicine. Burglars broke into Mrs. Newlin's house on the road to Poughkeepsie, about 1½ miles from Fishkill Landing, but found nothing to steal. H.N. Barton, who owned a gun shop at the rear of Raizell's market, was showing a customer a pistol with a safety cap on the nipple when he pulled the trigger, unaware it was loaded with shot and slugs. The charge passed through the shop door into the market, hitting James Phillips in the arm and Charles Livington in the chest, mortally wounding him. J.W. Spaight, editor of The Fishkill Standard, purchased a photograph gallery at Fishkill Landing. William Holton announced he would operate a 6:30 a.m. coach from Fishkill that stopped at two hotels on its way to the Fishkill Landing depot. After a state court released a list of 42 people seeking U.S. citizenship, Mayor Ernest Macomber objected to the petitions of Stanley and John Kishkiel, owners of the New Haven House, because they had been accused of disorderly conduct. Their bar had been raided by federal liquor authorities, and the brothers, immigrants from Russia/Poland, and a patron resisted. After being arrested, the men put the bar up for sale and returned to their previous trades as a shoemaker and a paper hanger. Frederick Futterer, the director of physical education and athletic coach for the Beacon public schools, was hired as director of recreation for the City of Albany. While driving four members of his family to a Baptist church conference in Washington, D.C., Robert Doughty slid off the road in Port Jervis and hit a telephone pole. His wife and sister-in-law were hospitalized. Sherwood Robinson of the Mahwenawasigh Tribe in Beacon was elected deputy grand sachem of the 11th district of the Hudson Valley region of the Improved Order of the Red Men, a fraternal organization. Robert Jones, a one-armed laborer at the Nicholson brickyard in Dutchess Junction, attacked Thomas Powers with an ax during a craps game, cutting him a dozen times. Dr. Charles Keating said Powers was expected to recover unless the wounds became infected. Frank Knapp purchased the Melzingah Hotel and the Beacon Stadium, which was...

Gary has a chat with artist Julie Nicholson about her show, Nostalgia, opening May 21st at CBD Gallery in Sydney. Julie has recently exhibited with CBD Gallery at the Aotearoa Art Fair (NZ), and her work has been widely recognised in national awards such as the Paddington Art Prizre and the Muswellbrook, and held in private collections in Australia and overseas. She co-hosts the popular arts podcast, Art Wank. Her duo solo exhibition, Nostalgia, stems from a sense of homesickness after moving from the UK to Australia at the age of 23. A deep sense of nostalgia has shaped her life, and only recently did she discover that nostalgia was once considered a disease. The works in this exhibition sit within that tension, posing the question of whether nostalgia is something that nurtures us, or something that holds us back. Many of the canvases in the exhibition are split across multiple panels, reflecting the fractured experience of trying to locate familiarity within a foreign landscape. Moments of recognition such as sketching in Berrima in the Southern Highlands, where the landscape can feel momentarily like home are interrupted by distinctly Australian elements, like a palm tree or native plant, which jolt her back into the awareness of distance and displacement.Julie has also titled many of the works using Old English words for landscape elements—such as weald, meaning forest. This reflects her interest in etymology and the evolution of language over time. Just as words shift, fall out of use, and take on new meanings, her understanding of the Australian landscape has also changed. Language, like memory, holds a connection to the past while continually adapting to the present, mirroring her experience of navigating place, identity, and belonging. Hosted on Acast. Spring field activities have been accelerated because of the cool, wet start. Ben Jarboe finds out about insects adding more pressure to the system. Dr. Emily Bick, UW-Entomologist says that alfalfa weevil seem to be a little delayed in their presence this spring. Bick says it's important that farmers don't lose sight on the threat the small insect can bring to an otherwise healthy alfalfa field. It'll be another breezy day around Wisconsin which continues to help with drying field conditions. Stu Muck says milder temperatures may be hard to notice with the breeze. With those drier field conditions, more acres of corn have been planted. Pam Jahnke finds out what worries Cooper Humphries, district sales manager with Wyffels Hybrids. Humphries says his biggest concern is proper field preparation. Humphries notes if sidewalls are compacted around that seed, it will cost yield in the end. Paid for by Wyffels Hybrid. Meet Jessica Moor from Wilson! She's another candidate for the 79th Alice in Dairyland position. Moor has dabbled in several different career areas, including completing a business administration degree at UW-River Falls. She's currently a dental assistant, but ready to take on Alice's duties! Good ideas were swirling on the UW-Madison campus Tuesday during the annual Dairy Innovation Hub's spring summit. Chuck Nicholson, professor of supply chain management at Penn State University and a UW-Madison affiliate in the Department of Animal & Dairy Sciences presented on Tuesday. He's completed a survey showing consumers would love a lactose-free ice cream option. Nicholson says reducing lactose in ice cream is a relatively simple process that involves adding a substance to the mix to break lactose down into its two component sugars. A study using a real-life auction revealed that lactose-intolerant consumers significantly value lactose-free ice cream over regular or reduced-lactose options. The study found that a person's specific degree of lactose tolerance is a major predictor of how much they value lactose-free dairy products. Despite the higher value placed on it by certain consumers, both local outlets like the UW Babcock store and national brands like Breyers currently price lactose-free ice cream the same as regular ice cream. Initial rough evaluations suggest that the increased costs of ingredients and labor to produce lactose-free ice cream are lower than the value consumers are willing to pay for it -- a valuable opportunity for ice cream manufacturers. On this episode, I ask whether a brand built entirely on restraint and considered growth can have a coherent relationship with AI. I sit down with Andrew Cottington, Director of Digital at Studio Nicholson, the London-based fashion brand known for its modular wardrobe, fabric-led design, and a customer base that tends to find it rather than be found. We dig into how a brand that deliberately avoids chasing scale thinks about customer acquisition and where performance marketing fits. We get into the loyalty programme they rebuilt after deciding fixed discounts were too transactional for their customer. We tackle the agentic storefront they launched in February with Swap, and something Andrew noticed that I thought was sharp: it was their most loyal customers, not new ones, who embraced it first. And we get into what considered growth actually looks like when the tools you're being asked to adopt are moving faster than anyone can predict. If you're running or marketing a brand that leads with taste and is trying to figure out where AI fits without compromising what makes the brand worth following, this one's for you. The Chicago Cubs are on a tear. The Northside faithful can feel a dynasty building beneath their feet, with every pitch, every hit, and every run coming home. And now they have a hero.In what was seen as the most lopsided and controversial transfers in baseball, even while it was happening, the New York Yankees placed their star pitcher Hank Borowy on waivers, and the Cubs slammed $100,000 into the Bronx Bombers' outstretched hands. The Cubs needed to win right now, and the chequebook  is wide open. Two days after he went on waivers, Borowy is stepping on the mound at Wrigley Field, ready to prove the Yankees wrong and take his new club to the National League pennant. It's a five-game series against the Cincinnati Reds, and the Cubs have won the first four games. Handing his new team a sweep would make for a memorable first game. It's also worth noting that we have players such as the anchorman Stan Hack at third base, and Phil Cavarretta on his way to the NL Batting Championship and the 1945 NL MVP, for the Cubs. For the Reds, you have the inspirational Dick Sipek, the first deaf player in the majors since Herbert Murphy in 1914, and the Iron Man Frank McCormick, fresh from his 652 consecutive appearances record during World War 2.The Cubs are heading to the top of the mountain; they are unstoppable, and they have the world at their feet. But, as we know thanks to the advantage of history,  there's a billy goat waiting for the Cubs at the end of the season. Until that happens, let's share the joy in Wrigley Field as the Cubs charge towards the pennant with their brand new pitcher.Ewan Spence and the Classic Baseball Radio team bring you this recreated radio broadcast from July 29, 1945. Together, they unpack what makes the movie work, from Aaron Sorkin's signature dialogue (and early “Sorkinisms”) to Reiner's direction and the film's stacked cast, including Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, and Demi Moore.Along the way, Shawn and Richie reflect on Sorkin's evolution as a writer, the film's origins as a stage play, and why A Few Good Men remains such a defining showcase for powerhouse acting and a reminder that Rob Reiner was truly one of the all-time great filmmakers.HOSTSShawn EastridgeRichie Pepio

Joe and Robert sit down with a very special guest: actor and Drag Race fan Julianne Nicholson, fresh off her appearance as a guest judge. What follows is a rare behind-the-scenes conversation about what it's actually like to step into the Werk Room orbit—and how surreal it feels when you go from watching the show at home to sitting on that panel. From superfan to guest judgeJulianne shares her deep history with Drag Race, from discovering the show with her daughter to bingeing every season—and what it meant to finally step onto the main stage. What the judges actually seeA fascinating breakdown of how little context guest judges get going in, how the acting challenge is presented, and what it's like judging queens you've never met before. The energy in the room vs. what we see on TVJulianne describes the surreal, almost dreamlike quality of filming—quiet soundstage, long pauses, and how different everything feels compared to the final edit. The acting challenge debateJoe and Robert revisit their (very different) takes on the sketches, while Julianne offers her perspective from inside the room—fully in the moment and genuinely laughing along. Lip sync clarity vs. in-the-room experienceWhy the winner of the lip sync felt more obvious on TV than it did live—and how proximity and staging affect perception. Track record vs. RuPaul's decision-makingA thoughtful discussion about whether track record actually matters, or if the lip sync—and Ru's instincts—always win out in the end. The emotional weight of being on Drag RaceJulianne reflects on the impact of the show, the fan response, and what she would want the queens to know about how much their work matters. Favorite queens and seasonsJulianne runs through some of her favorite queens—from Bob and Monet to Sasha Colby and Mistress—and how her experience discovering the show later shaped her perspective. This episode offers a rare glimpse behind the curtain of RuPaul's Drag Race through the eyes of someone who truly loves the show. Julianne Nicholson brings both fan energy and actor insight, grounding the conversation in genuine appreciation for the queens, the craft, and the magic of the experience. SEASON 4 EPISODE 68: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump doesn’t REALIZE that he’s screwed in Iran. He can't decide if he's won and we should applaud now, or if he'll win later and we should applaud then - when the reality is, he's in a quagmire and about two weeks from handing the Democrats a majority that even White House strategists think might be enough to impeach AND remove him next year. Key Republicans and everybody behind the scenes in MAGA are looking for off-ramps. Does Trump know? Will he be temporarily not-a-moron and take one of them? Is Trump in a fugue state? Dissociative behavior? Temporary amnesia? No awareness that there are consequences? You know – his normal state – only WORSE. First about Iran he said “any time I want it to end, it will end." Now about Iran he says it will continue indefinitely until they quote “literally could never build that country back.” Is there a strategy? A plan? Anything? In the most important document of the war, Senator Chris Murphy told us what he could of a semi-confidential briefing about Iran by the administration. They seem to think all they have to do is destroy all of Iran's armaments and they'll never ever find a way to replace them. And while he’s demanding the world bend to his will, again he is helping the Russians help the Iranians try to kill our people and our allies. Monday I mentioned it was the Russians locating American Assets in the middle east for Iran's benefit. Now Trump is indirectly funding Russian advisors helping Iran with its drone strategy. Is Trump even aware he is awake? And what the hell is this with him trying to guess the shoe size of his cabinet members and buying them shoes that were already out of style in 1966? PLUS what is it with Pete PTSD Hegseth? He has now BANNED all outside photographers from Pentagon briefings because he thought the Associated Press images of him were unflattering. But ALL images of Pete Hegseth are unflattering. B-Block (32:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Poor Adnan Virk misses by an inch after trying to out-sing Michael Buble. Bill Maher gets run over at an NBA game. Alina Habba brings us her umpteenth malapropism; she can't tell her Cahoots from her Cajones; and the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee can't tell the difference between 1947 and 47 years. C-Block (45:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Hardly that. Things I found on an ancient cassette. A bunch of radio sportscasts I did in my first 90 days in this business - just the other day (in 1979). Enjoy, or skip them, I won't be offended either way.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
