“Can I move in with you?” Laurel Louise Anderson (lovingly called Miss Ma'am) posed the question to our producer and her son, Marcel Malekebu, in the summer of 2024. After nearly a year of Marcel asking and a year of her denying, the request came seemingly out of nowhere. His mom moved in, and Marcel and his wife Jenae became caregivers not only to their two very young daughters, but to Miss Ma'am. Caregiving is not an easy thing to do, but it is a holy thing to do. And in this episode, Marcel and Jenae are sharing Miss Ma'am and their lives with her with us. Watch us on YouTube here! Get this episode ad-free here! Renaissance English History Podcast: A Show About the Tudors
In 1538, a man named Geoffrey Pole was arrested and taken to the Tower of London. He hadn't plotted against Henry VIII. He hadn't raised an army. He'd written letters to his brother and said, once, that he wished he could see him. That was enough. What followed was one of the most psychologically devastating interrogations of the Tudor period, and one of the least talked about. Over seven sessions, Geoffrey gave evidence that brought down his entire family: his brother Lord Montagu, his cousin Henry Courtenay the Marquess of Exeter, and eventually his 67-year-old mother Margaret Pole, the last surviving Plantagenet. He survived. He was pardoned. He spent the next twenty years in exile carrying what he'd done. This is not really a spy story. It's a story about what surveillance states actually run on, not information, but fear. And about the brother who burned the family from a safe distance in Rome and somehow came out of it as Archbishop of Canterbury. Tudor history has been calling Geoffrey Pole weak for five centuries. I want to make the case that we don't get to say that from here.

MediMap's Director says they've traced a breach to the platform back to a profile, which has likely been compromised. The platform's widely used across the country, especially in aged care, disability, hospice, and community health. Director Geoffrey Sayer says there've been unauthorised changes to some demographic records. Sayer told Mike Hosking the person hasn't used brute force to infiltrate the system, they've somehow gained access. He says there's no reason to believe this is a cyber-attack, they've simply used credentials of an existing user to cause harm. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There's a growing debate in Canada about balancing the relationship between courts and legislatures. For nearly four decades, one Supreme Court ruling has loomed large in shaping an aspect of this debate: how conflicts between rights – and their limitations – are determined in Canada. That case – R v Oakes, decided in 1986 – gave Canadian jurisprudence the famous “Oakes test,” which courts still use to assess whether limits on Charter rights are justified. The test is widely cited. But critics argue it's become confusing, unpredictable, and undermines the historic power legislatures are meant to share in the construction of rights. That's why a new paper published by the Macdonald-Laurier Institute – titled Renovating Oakes: Why Section 1 Justifies Reasonable Limits and Not Infringements on Charter Rights – says the Oakes test is in need of a “renovation.”The authors of that paper, Gerard Kennedy and Geoffrey Sigalet, joined Inside Policy Talks to make that case.Gerard Kennedy is an associate professor and associate dean at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Law. He's also a constitutional lawyer with extensive experience in public law and Charter litigation.Geoffrey Sigalet is an associate professor of political science at the University of British Columbia and director of the UBC Research Group for Constitutional Law.On the podcast, they tell Mark Mancini, an MLI senior fellow and assistant professor at Thompson Rivers University Faculty of Law, that when it comes to the Oakes test, courts have drifted away from the Charter's original logic.“People are not skeptical enough about what happens in courts, and they are extremely skeptical about what happens in legislatures,” says Sigalet. “And I don't think that they're wrong sometimes about the legislatures. I just think we should be applying our skepticism a bit more evenly.”

The Red Sea has become the centre of a geopolitical crisis. How to secure one of the world's most crowded trade routes? With, amongst others, NATO-Chief of Staff Geoffrey van Leeuwen we speak about proxy wars, maritime strategy and trade.Every year, roughly 33% of global containerised trade passes through the Red Sea. At its narrowest point, just 26 kilometres wide, the sea is one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints. The attacks in the last years by the Yemen-based Houthis have once again demonstrated the vulnerability of this geostrategic corridor. By sinking four vessels and hijacking another with relative ease, the Houthis have found an effective means to exert political leverage and managed to decrease maritime traffic through the passage from November 2023 onwards with 55%, bringing international trade through the Red Sea effectively to a standstill. With the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Suez Canal no longer viable routes for most shipping companies, vessels traveling between Europe and Asia have increasingly diverted around Africa. For the EU, particularly for a maritime trading nation like the Netherlands, this divergence significantly complicates supply chains, increases costs, and critically exposes strategic vulnerabilities. As the cessation of Houthi attacks appears contingent on the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, European shipping companies ask whether a return to the strait is a realistic option at all.During this event we think through a set of interrelated questions: what geopolitical stakes are at play in the Red Sea region, what conditions are required to ensure safety and security, who are the key actors shaping developments in this strategically vital corridor, and specifically what role does NATO take on in its naval strategy?About the speakersGeoffrey van Leeuwen is NATO-Chief of Staff and Director of the Office of the Secretary General. Before taking over as Chief of Staff and Director of the Office of the Secretary General, Geoffrey van Leeuwen served as Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation for the Netherlands, after having spent several years as National Security Advisor to Prime Minister Mark Rutte.Benedetta Girardi is Programme Coordinator of the HCSS Europe in the Indo-Pacific programme and Strategic Analyst at HCSS. Geoffrey West didn't set out to explain work. He was a physicist trying to understand why living things grow, age, and die. But when his questions expanded into biology, cities, and organizations, they offered a way to think about why growth changes how organizations behave and why success often brings new constraints. In this episode, Dart and Geoffrey discuss why work feels different as organizations scale, why cities keep renewing themselves while companies tend to burn out, and what these hidden constraints mean for the people doing the work.Geoffrey West is a British theoretical physicist and Distinguished Professor at the Santa Fe Institute. He is a former president of the Institute and the author of Scale, which explores how size shapes growth, innovation, and lifespan across living and social systems. In this episode, Dart and Geoffrey discuss:- Why work changes as organizations grow- How simple scaling laws shape complex systems- Why larger animals live longer- Why companies die younger than cities- How scale speeds up innovation- Why bureaucracy grows with success- How innovation gets crowded out over time- Why cities tolerate difference better than firms- What keeps work alive inside organizations- And other topics…Geoffrey West is a British theoretical physicist and Distinguished Professor at the Santa Fe Institute, where he previously served as president. What powered the pyramids has always been the missing question. In this second part of our conversation with Geoffrey Drumm, @thelandofchem , explore a provocative but physically grounded idea: that ancient Egyptian structures tapped into natural electricity: earth currents, lightning, and conductive geology. They channeled this electricity to drive large-scale chemical processes at the pyramids, which we discussed in Part 1. Drawing on field evidence, climate history, and experimental modeling, the discussion reframes Giza not as a ceremonial site, but as an engineered landscape tuned to environmental energy. If this view is even partly correct, it suggests ancient technology didn't fight nature for power...it listened to it.Part 1: https://youtu.be/7vuo5dl5bF4PATREON https://www.patreon.com/c/demystifysciPARADOX LOST PRE-SALE: https://buy.stripe.com/7sY7sKdoN5d29eUdYddEs0bHOMEBREW MUSIC - Check out our new album!Hard Copies (Vinyl): FREE SHIPPING https://demystifysci-shop.fourthwall.com/products/vinyl-lp-secretary-of-nature-everything-is-so-good-hereStreaming:https://secretaryofnature.bandcamp.com/album/everything-is-so-good-herePARADIGM DRIFThttps://demystifysci.com/paradigm-drift-show00:00 Go! What if the pyramids were never meant to be tombs at all? In today's conversation with Geoffrey Drumm, @thelandofchem , we explore a radical but physically grounded hypothesis: that ancient Egyptian pyramids functioned as industrial machines, integrating chemistry, pressure, materials science, and natural electricity at monumental scale. Drawing on experimental models, geological evidence, and global architectural parallels, the discussion reframes ancient civilization not as primitive or symbolic, but as deeply practical and technologically fluent. If true, this view doesn't romanticize the past, it forces us to reconsider how much functional knowledge about nature has been lost, misclassified, or misunderstood.Part 2: https://youtu.be/gTNB3yHMNIcPATREON https://www.patreon.com/c/demystifysciPARADOX LOST PRE-SALE: https://buy.stripe.com/7sY7sKdoN5d29eUdYddEs0bHOMEBREW MUSIC - Check out our new album!Hard Copies (Vinyl): FREE SHIPPING https://demystifysci-shop.fourthwall.com/products/vinyl-lp-secretary-of-nature-everything-is-so-good-hereStreaming:https://secretaryofnature.bandcamp.com/album/everything-is-so-good-herePARADIGM DRIFThttps://demystifysci.com/paradigm-drift-show00:00 Go! It is a case rooted in deception, tragedy, and the slow unraveling of a horrifying pattern, told with care and historical context.Moody music. Dark history. One unforgettable episode.Support the show

September 24, 1963. Opa-locka, Florida. 29-year old pilot Geoffrey Sullivan takes off in a twin-engine Beechcraft Travel Air plane from Opa-locka Airport and is accompanied by 37-year old freelance journalist Alex Rorke, as well as a passenger believed to be a Cuban exile named Enrique Molina Garcia. Over the next several hours, Sullivan flies through the Caribbean and changes his flight plan several times, but after stopping to refuel on the island of Cozumel, the plane and its passengers vanish without a trace. Since Sullivan and Rorke were heavily involved in anti-communist missions against Fidel Castro, it is rumoured that they may have been captured and held prisoner in Cuba for years. Even though Sullivan's daughter eventually files a wrongful death lawsuit against the Cuban government, she receives no conclusive answers about what happened. On this week's episode, we explore a Cold War era mystery about a missing aircraft and two American men.
