Jules Leotard first somersaulted off a trapeze at Cirque Napoléon in Paris on 12th November, 1859. His act inspired gymnasts and circus performers the world over - although Leotard is now best remembered as the inventor of the skin-tight outfits he wore on stage. Leotard had abandoned his studies as a lawyer to perfect his circus skills, spurred on by his acrobatic father. He developed his act into a twelve-minute trapeze routine with only a heap of mattresses to break his fall. In this episode, Arion, Olly and Rebecca perve over old photos of Leotard's physique; reveal how Alvin and the Chipmunks AND Bruce Springsteen have a connection with this day in history; and consider how the leotard evolved from a ‘strong man' outfit to a girl's ballet costume… Further Reading: • ‘The First Public performance by Jules Leotard' (Squaducation, 2020): https://www.squaducation.com/blog/first-public-performance-jules-leotard • ‘THE DRESS AND THE LEGEND: HISTORY AND FUNCTIONS OF A LEOTARD' (The Vistek, 2020): https://thevistek.com/the-dress-and-the-legend-history-and-functions-of-a-leotard/ • ‘Eddie Cantor - The Man On The Flying Trapeze' (Columbia Years 1922-1940): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwvqMptS7UA This episode first aired in 2021 Love the show? During this message, we looked at 2 Kings chapter 22 to see the story of King Josiah. Josiah heard God’s Word and was... aware he fell short of God’s standard and motivated to take action. This weekend, Pastor Steve Huffman guided us through these two important points as we continued our Unsung Heroes series. This week be encouraged to ask God what action He's inviting you to take this week.
Grey Bull Rescue helps innocent Americans who are stranded, imprisoned, or otherwise trapped in dangerous situations around the globe. BRYAN STERN founded Grey Bull in August 2021, during the fall of Afghanistan. Since that time, Grey Bull has helped rescue more than 8,000 Americans in 800 different missions. Stern's own story begins decades earlier. As a young Army intelligence officer, he was at Ground Zero on the day of 9/11, and narrowly avoided being trapped by the collapsing towers. He went on to serve a full and highly decorated military career. In this episode, Stern discusses his path from the World Trade Center to today, and the missions he and his team of brave volunteers conduct around the globe today. What if the break you didn't plan became the doorway you didn't know you needed? This episode marks the return of the conversation after a season of real-life application—where grief and growth collided, and presence took center stage. We explore the myth of emotional neatness, the tension between doing and thinking, and how unexpected opportunities arise when you stop needing a destination. From moments of doubt to silent revelations, we share updates from a journey that now includes something entirely new—an evolving space shaped by community, curiosity, and faith in the unknown. Let this be your reminder: the process is the point. [00:00:00] Reflecting on how the podcast evolved from playful intros to deeply meaningful connections over time. [00:03:45] Amanda shares the unexpected value of the break and how importance is rooted in meaning, not labels. [00:06:52] Grieving roles and transitions while discovering new spaces to grow into authenticity. [00:09:49] Ray discusses the difference between talking about life and actually applying what's discussed. [00:13:02] Announcement of a new physical space that emerged from presence, not planning. [00:15:38] The power of small courageous choices and how they ripple into larger transformation. [00:19:01] Showing up for yourself is the foundation—everything else is a reflection, not a substitute. [00:22:35] Gratitude for supporters who helped bring a once-digital space into the physical world. [00:25:34] Exploring wholeness, contribution, and fulfillment through co-creation rather than hierarchy. [00:27:53] The value of going through difficulty as a way to deeply connect with others' experiences. [00:31:01] Emotional complexity isn't linear—grief, joy, anger, and release often arrive together. [00:35:13] Our childhood conditioning teaches us to divide emotions—real growth is embracing the blend. [00:38:51] Recognizing that thinking about living is not the same as living—presence is the only reality. [00:43:24] Daring to say yes to challenges and watching new skills, roles, and experiences unfold. [00:47:12] Letting go of identity narratives opens doors to unpredictable, surreal transformations.
In this week's episode I wanted to continue the conversation from last week's episode, but go deeper. As we examine our heart let's also examine the reason behind why we do what we do. We may be able to fool others, but you can't fool God. He truly sees you and he knows you. It's time to get real to really uncover our intent and the reasons why we do certain things. When we take a step back and examine our heart we often realize our motive. This episode is for you if:-you need a check in your heart and spirit of why you do what you do-you often find yourself overachieving and not realizing it's a void that only God can fill-you have often found yourself living for the approval of others or that pat on the back when you should live to please GodI have a FREE resource for you!! 2025-11-03 | Silicon Wafers 047 | DAILY UPDATES | Putin wants everyone to think he's a tough nut – uncrackable in fact. And the Oreshnik missile system is an extension of his threat and bluster, one might even say symbolic of his authority and virility. But the Oreshnik appears to have been cracked by Ukraine. Let's explore this! “Oreshnik” (the hazel nut), is one of the Kremlin's latest so-called wonder weapons. A hypersonic, nuclear-capable, intermediate-range ballistic missile that Vladimir Putin has hyped as “unstoppable.” But much to his annoyance, OI presume, Ukraine says its security and intelligence services—the SBU, HUR, and foreign intelligence — located it, reached it, and destroyed it deep inside Russia. Not on the frontline or while being transported. This apparently happened at the Kapustin Yar missile range in Astrakhan Oblast. And they claim to have achieved this months ago — quietly, surreptitiously — then revealed it at a Kyiv briefing late last week. (The Kyiv Independent)It raises so many questions. How they did it. Why operational silence with regards to the achievement, and of course Russia has chosen silence, for perhaps more obvious reasons. ----------Partner on this video: KYIV OF MINE Watch the trailer now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arJUcE1rxY0'Kyiv of Mine' is a documentary series about Ukraine's beautiful capital, Kyiv. The decisions you sidestep often carry the heaviest consequences. Embracing a “NO” can lead uncovering your greatest victories. Taking small, bold actions consistently over time equips you for the more significant leaps ahead. Your mindset around confidence, setbacks, and daily activities can determine whether your business succeeds or fails. It's high time to stop shying away from the information that enriches your decision-making process. Those cozy chairs may remain unnoticed until you actively seek them out. From armed uprisings in the Caribbean to the hidden power of ritual, song and solidarity, the story of enslaved people's resistance is far richer and more radical than has often been told. In this episode, Sudhir Hazareesingh speaks to Danny Bird about his new book Daring to be Free, which draws on fragmentary archives and oral traditions to highlight the forgotten people who resisted their enslavers, explores the global reverberations of the Haitian Revolution, and reveals the central role of women in shaping struggles for freedom. This is the space where individuality thrives, where traditions are bent or broken, and where embroidery becomes a deeply personal language of expression.Rules, patterns and expectations become blurred with stitches finding themselves wandering every which way, where colour choices are meant to surprise or challenge and where compositions tend to make you want to stop and think.Join me as I explore four embroidery artists who break rules or use a technique unexpectedly, but to my mind, that only enriches and enhances the world of embroidery as they explore and develop.Show Notes: https://stitchsafari.com/idiosyncratic-em…daring-to-differ/

Today I'm delighted to welcome back Elizabeth Glenn-Copeland who previously joined me to share her amazing wisdom and some of her soulful poetry from her incredible book Daring To Hope at the Cliff's Edge in Episode 35. Elizabeth is currently on a UK and Europe tour with her composer husband Beverly Glenn-Copeland, if you have the opportunity to see them live then I highly recommend it. They also have a beautiful new album Laughter in Summer which is available for Pre-order: https://beverlyglenncopeland.comToday we honour the incredible legacy of one of Elizabeth's cherished mentors Joanna Macy environmental activist, author and scholar of Buddhism, general systems theory and deep ecology who transitioned from this world in July 2025. Elizabeth guides us with poetry and gentle compassion to explore some of the principles of The Work That Reconnects, which Joanna created as the ground-breaking framework for personal and social change that helps people take the despair and apathy we feel and transform it into constructive, collaborative action. From gratitude and honouring the pain we witness in ourselves and the world around us, to finding a new story and vision to hold as we move forward and write the future for the earth and humanity that we want to bring into being. Remember Hope is a verb, it is meant to be active not passive, it is a practice that we must tend daily to cultivate the change we want to see in our world.Learn more about ElizabethElizabeth Glenn-Copeland is a writer, theatre maker and arts educator whose career over the last forty years has evolved at the intersection of arts and activism. In this week's podcast I am tackling a topic a lot of us struggle with and perhaps don't care to talk about. Setting healthy boundaries is really a God idea. Many of us have a hard time using our voice to speak up for ourselves and continue to allow others to just dump everything on us....especially family. I believe this podcast is for if:-you have a hard time confronting others as well as using your voice to speak up for yourself-often wonder why you feel drained after talking to someone about all their issues-you need to be reminded that even Jesus put up boundaries with othersGod wants us to live a life of peace and not one of chaos or confusion. If you are lacking peace in a relationship perhaps you need to set up a boundary. I have a FREE resource for you!! Click the link below for DREAM BIG series. Caleb Drahosh In Paul's final greeting to the Romans, we learn that the letter was recorded by Tertius. Gaius hosted Paul, likely in Corinth. We learn of Erastus, the city treasurer, and Quartus as well. These men were of varying statuses, but all served Christ where they were stationed. Pen and ink, civic service, and hospitality are some of the simple, yet profound, tools used in the upbuilding of the church and the advancement of Christ's Kingdom on earth.

During World War II, the United States housed hundreds of thousands of enemy soldiers who had been captured as prisoners of war. Camp Papago Park, located in Phoenix, was built to hold captured German U-boat crew members, some of the most well-trained and ardent members of the German military. Authorities hoped that the harsh Arizona desert would deter any escape attempts, but they underestimated the German soldiers' determination to return to battle.Under the watchful eyes of the American guards, over 20 German soldiers dug their way out Camp Papago Park and kicked off the largest manhunt in American history. Sam's guest in this week's Book Club podcast is the historian Sudhir Hazareesingh, whose new book Daring to Be Free: Rebellion and Resistance of the Enslaved in the Atlantic World reframes the story of Atlantic slavery. He explains why the familiar tale of enlightened Europeans bringing about abolition leaves out the most important voices of all – the enslaved themselves – and how from Africa to Haiti and beyond, traditions of rebellion, resistance and spiritual resilience shaped the struggle for freedom long before Wilberforce or Clarkson entered the picture. Emily Callaci explores this campaign in her Cundill Prize-nominated book Wages for Housework and, in this episode, she speaks to Ellie Cawthorne about why the idea of women being compensated for unpaid household labour caused such a stir at the time – and continues to resonate today. In 1909, a young convicted train robber named Frank Grigware began a life sentence at the United States Penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas. Located amid the treacherous waters of the San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was designed to hold the most-wanted prisoners in America, and developed a reputation as an unbreakable fortress. But from the moment Frank Lee Morris set foot on the island in 1962, he was determined to break free. Together, with three other conspirators, he hatched a cunning plan that would become one of the most elaborate attempts at a prison break in history, defying a prison crawling with guards and surrounded by chilly ocean waters, in their unlikely bid for freedom.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! What if boyhood isn't a problem to fix—but a strength to steward? In this energizing, tender conversation, Ginny Yurich and author Rebekah Lovell dismantle the myth that lively boys need taming. From a golf-cart rescue on Rebekah's farm to the everyday habits that build courage and character, they name what our culture gets wrong: over-scheduling, medicating drive, and treating noise, dirt, and risk like defects. They also offer a hopeful path back with ideas like service before entertainment, real responsibility, and wide-open hours outside. You'll leave with a practical playbook for reviving boyhood at any age: daily read-alouds, purposeful risk (trees, tools, real work), and simple rhythms that turn “busy” into brave. Start Rebekah's free Outdoor Reading Club to pair books with sunshine, then use this episode as your nudge to cut screen clutter, unschedule a little, and watch initiative bloom. If you've sensed that childhood is being tamed indoors, this is your permission and your plan to bring back wonder, grit, joy and lots of dirt. Genesis: The Story of Apollo 8, the First Manned Flight to Another World Author: Bob Zimmerman Segment 4: NASA's Daring Gamble: Responding to Soviet Failures NASA's decision to send Apollo 8 on a circumlunar mission was a bold, aggressive move spurred by the Soviet Zondprogram. While the lunar module was behind schedule, George Low, manager of the Apollo program, proposed sending Apollo 8 to the moon after observing Soviet progress and knowing a simple Earth orbit repetition was a waste. The Soviets experienced failures with Zond 4 (self-destructed), Zond 5 (ballistic re-entry), and Zond 6 (lost atmosphere), which canceled their manned lunar mission. Low and Sam Phillips made the decision, informing a furious but ultimately supportive James Webb, NASA's head. This "gamble" was driven by the desire to prove American capabilities in the space race. 1957 SPUTNIK
In February 1864, more than 100 Union Army officers broke out of Libby Prison, an infamous Confederate prisoner of war compound in Richmond, Virginia. It was the largest prison break of the Civil War. Libby held more than 1,000 Union officers who were crammed into the former tobacco warehouse. They faced rampant illness, meager rations, and constant abuse from sadistic guards. As conditions worsened and the death toll mounted, a small crew of prisoners resolved to escape. Working in secret, they excavated a narrow tunnel out of Libby's rat-infested cellar in a daring attempt to dig their way to freedom.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more!
