Have you ever found yourself afraid to feel joy - worried that if you celebrate, the other shoe will inevitably drop? So many of us quietly hold joy at arm's length. We tell ourselves it's safer not to get our hopes up than to risk being let down again. What if joy isn't a fleeting feeling for the lucky few, but a courageous practice we can all learn? Dr Alison sits down with therapist and author Nicole Zasowski to talk about her journey of choosing joy in the face of loss. Nicole shares how she discovered that joy can be the most vulnerable emotion of all - and why learning to celebrate is one of the most important practices we can cultivate in our lives. Together, you'll learn: The surprising reason joy can feel harder than grief or disappointment The difference between toxic positivity and true, grounded joy Why pessimism and cynicism are really forms of control Practical ways to retrain your mind to savor what's good—even in difficult seasons What Scripture and neuroscience teach us about joy
In this week's episode I am going deep on why people have such a hard time receiving all the goodness that God has to offer. I believe many of us have distorted view on who God is. Many of us while we were growing up were taught may false teaching on the true nature of God. My friend we have to get into our bible and ask God to reveal himself to us. We have to renew our mind to accept the truth of who he is. This podcast if for those of you who:-Struggle with accepting God's blessings-who believe it is up to our "good works" to receive his blessings rather than it being a good gift- believe that God just is out to get us, correct us and scold usI believe this podcast will shift your mind to believe there is more to God than what you have been told. He is truly a good God!I have an amazing resource for you. You are not going to want to miss this. Welcome back to Beyond the Thesis with Papa PhD! In this episode, host David Mendes sits down with Jillian Rilley – founder, writer, keynote speaker, and consultant whose decades of work focus on helping people navigate change and accelerate learning, especially in disruptive times. Drawing on her experiences across Africa, Asia, and Central Europe, Jillian shares her personal journey of making bold transitions, including her pivotal move from academia in the U.S. to South Africa during a historic turning point. ogether, David and Jillian dive deep into the concept of “the 10 Permissions,” the subject of Jillian's upcoming book, offering guidance for anyone feeling stuck on their current path or struggling with the weight of external expectations. The conversation takes an honest look at the discomfort and growth that comes from choosing a non-linear, self-directed life—especially relevant for graduate students, early career researchers, and anyone stepping off the well-trodden academic or career path. They discuss concrete practices for building “discomfort tolerance,” the power of self-permission, and the importance of cultivating a diverse portfolio of experiences—both for personal satisfaction and future adaptability. If you've ever faced doubt, disappointment, or confusion from your support network over career decisions, or are simply looking to make your journey more intentional, this episode is filled with insight and practical advice for you. Jillian Reilly is a founder, writer, keynote speaker, and consultant. Having spent her 30-year career working in social, organizational, and individual change across Africa, Asia, and Central Europe, Jillians focus is on helping people unlock their ability to navigate change and accelerate growth and learning. Jillians upcoming book, The Ten Permissions, guides readers in permitting themselves to design lives that fully leverage the possibilities of our disruptive world. What we covered in the interview: Discomfort Tolerance is a Superpower: Learning to distinguish between discomfort and danger is crucial. Most growth happens when we venture into the unfamiliar, so don't let discomfort masquerade as danger and hold you back from essential, uncomfortable conversations or bold decisions. Approval is Desirable, Not Essential: Especially when making “novel” decisions that disappoint or surprise family and close ones. Your path won't always be easily understood by others, but their approval isn't a requirement for action. Back yourself, be your own permission giver. Diversify Your Experiences: Academia often encourages tunnel vision, but Gillian urges building a “portfolio of capabilities.” Explore beyond your specialization – network, revive old hobbies, join communities, and experiment. This adaptability and broad perspective are key assets in today's chaotic (yet possibility-filled) world. Jillian's advice is a timely reminder: Your life isn't about ticking the next institutional box, but about cultivating agency and resilience for a world in constant flux. In the first of a two-part discussion, defence expert Lee Pilgrim provides some common sense, but possibly provocative, suggestions on how to sort out the mess in which the Royal Navy currently finds itself. In this wide-ranging part one chat Lee considers the current state of the RN - underperforming against the budget given to it - and recommends some radical cures for what ails the Naval Service. These include getting rid of surface warships and submarines that never go to sea in order to ensure the rest of the Fleet is out there being more active. In this discussion Lee highlights the need to return the Royal Navy to being a proper fighting force. That was a desire expressed by the new First Sea Lord when he took office recently. In light of that Lee also outlines some of the risks that are being stacked up due to key naval capabilities being hollowed out. Lee provides numerous robust opinions, not least about MoD inefficiency, and the crucial need for a new kind of Submarine Service that mixes conventional boats with nuclear-powered ones to properly tackle its tasks. He also mentions the decline of UK amphibious warfare forces - and a whole lot more! It is fascinating discussion with podcast host Iain Ballantyne and there will be more prescriptions offered by Dr Lee in part two, which will be out soon. •Lee Pilgrim has worked in defence and intelligence - for government and industry - for over 30 years both in the UK and overseas, so has some useful insights into a whole load of interesting things. As Franco Zeffirelli prepared to film his critically acclaimed version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, he made a daring decision. He chose two unknowns to play the lead characters and insisted they be close to the age of the characters as Shakespeare had penned them. Zeffirelli ultimately selected seventeen-year-old Leonard Whiting as Romeo and sixteen-year-old Olivia Hussey as Juliet. Some might think that Jesus took a similar risk with the selection of His disciples, who would be charged with an infinitely more important role. The task of taking His message of forgiveness to the world would be entrusted to simple men who were, at the very least, undereducated. In fact, when some of these early believers in Jesus were arrested and questioned, the religious leaders were stunned. Acts 4:13 says, “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished.” Any assumed risk was more than overwhelmed by the real story behind these simple fishermen: “They took note that these men had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13). The seemingly unqualified disciples had not only been with Christ, but they also had His promise to be with them always (Matthew 28:20). We share that promise as well (Hebrews 13:5) and can be assured that, in His presence and with His grace, no task set before us will be too great for Him.
In this episode of Stranger Fruit, we explore the double meaning of “Bear” — both the act of enduring life's burdens and the act of baring our souls to others in order to heal. These two actions, while deeply human, can also be terrifying, mirroring the fear of coming face-to-face with the animal itself. Dr. Jonathan Willard joins us to discuss how we can confront, tame, and even befriend the internal bears that challenge us. We talk about the delicate balance between strength and vulnerability, the importance of self-awareness, and the ways in which facing our fears can help us become the best versions of ourselves. Wildfires are intensifying across California and the western United States, fueled by extreme heat, dry fuels and gusty winds pushing several into megafire territory. California is also facing 14 other active fires across the state, including the Gifford Fire raging in the Los Padres National Forest. The Gifford Fire has grown to over 104,000 acres and is 21% contained, as of Saturday morning according to CalFire. Farther east in Arizona, the Dragon Bravo Fire along the North Rim of the Grand Canyon has scorched nearly 135,000 acres since a lightning strike ignited it on July 4. It is the largest wildfire blazing in the lower 48 states and is 36% contained as of Saturday morning. Dozens of fires are active in Nevada, Utah and Arizona. In other news, three people were airlifted from Antarctica in a high-risk rescue mission this week, after medical emergencies at a remote U.S. research base required urgent evacuation through some of the harshest flying conditions on the planet. The mission, conducted by the Royal New Zealand Air Force, involved a non-stop round trip of nearly 20 hours through total darkness, subzero temperatures and highly volatile weather. Send us a textIn this compelling episode of Navigating the Customer Experience, we are joined by global hospitality executive, author, and social entrepreneur Carmen Vlasceanu. With over 25 years of experience in hospitality, aviation, catering, and cruise industries, Carmen shares her remarkable journey from growing up in communist Romania to becoming a transformative leader in customer experience and organizational growth. She holds advanced degrees in Revenue Management, International Business, and Marketing, and is also the founder of Angels-Wings.org, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting underprivileged children with food, clothing, and education.Carmen's latest endeavor is her book, Dare to C.A.R.E: Unlock Your Potential to Transform Your Life, Well-Being and Customer Experience. The book presents the C.A.R.E. Model, which stands for Connection, Authenticity, Reengineering, and Evolution. It offers a humanistic framework that empowers individuals and organizations to align purpose with service delivery—moving beyond transactional interactions to deeply meaningful customer engagement. The conversation explores the multi-layered value of the book—both as inspirational reading and a practical workbook. Carmen explains how Dare to C.A.R.E is filled with bullet-point strategies that help individuals rediscover purpose, boost mental wellness, and reconnect with their natural strengths. For leaders and managers, it provides applicable tools to enhance team cohesion, foster authentic communication, and build a purpose-driven work culture. The goal is simple yet profound: when individuals thrive, organizations—and by extension, customers—thrive too. While the book draws heavily from Carmen's hospitality background, it transcends industries. Whether you're in banking, retail, pharma, or any customer-facing sector, the lessons in Dare to C.A.R.E are universal. Carmen emphasizes that customer experience today is everyone's business, not just that of the hospitality sectorWhen asked about a single word that organizations should focus on for the latter half of 2025, Carmen shares three: Resilience, Purpose, and Legacy. These values are the backbone of not just business success, but meaningful human impact. She quotes, “The day you plant the seed is not the day you eat the fruit,” encouraging listeners to invest long-term in values that matter.A deeply spiritual person, Carmen credits the Bible as her most indispensable daily tool, using it for both personal inspiration and professional grounding. She believes that every act of kindness, however small, can ignite lasting change—be it for a colleague, customer, or community member. As for books that shaped her worldview, she highlights "Soar!: Building Your Vision from the Ground Up" by T.D. Jakes, a guide that emphasizes perseverance, vision, and service to others. She believes that in a world increasingly marked by division, it's crucial to focus on shared humanity and collective growth.Carmen also shares her excitement about her ongoing projects, including the Global Hospitality and Maritime Leaders platform—offering mentoring, coaching, and personalized training for professionals seeking growth or career pivots. In tandem, her nonprofit Angels-Wings continues to expand its impact, giving hope and practical support to vulnerable children and families. She closes with a powerful reminder that “Daring to care” isn't just a slogan—it's a call to action. When we align who we are with what we do, and when organizations operate from a place of purpose, transformation happens—not just in metrics, but in lives.Connect with Carmen:Website:

ideas, strolled thoughtfully down the street wearing a floral pajama set that didn't match at all.Da: Det var ikke hans mest stilsikre øjeblik, men han havde brug for frisk luft til at klare tankerne.En: It wasn't his most stylish moment, but he needed fresh air to clear his mind.Da: Pludselig gik det op for ham: Han havde glemt sin nøgle inde i huset.En: Suddenly it dawned on him: He had forgotten his key inside the house.Da: Han standsede brat foran sin egen hoveddør og kiggede opgivende på den lukkede indgang.En: He stopped abruptly in front of his own front door and looked hopelessly at the closed entrance.Da: Katastrofen var en realitet.En: The catastrophe was real.Da: Men Kasper, som aldrig tabte modet, besluttede sig for at besøge Freja, hans kloge og skarpsindige nabo.En: But Kasper, who never lost heart, decided to visit Freja, his wise and astute neighbor.Da: Freja boede i et hyggeligt rødt hus med en dørklokke, der sang som en glad lille fugl, når nogen ringede på.En: Freja lived in a cozy red house with a doorbell that sang like a happy little bird when someone rang it.Da: Hun åbnede døren med et bredt smil.En: She opened the door with a broad smile.Da: "Hej, Kasper," sagde hun muntert.En: "Hi, Kasper," she said cheerfully.Da: "Hvad har du rodet dig ud i nu?"En: "What have you gotten yourself into now?"Da: Kasper rømmede sig og beskrev sin fæle situation.En: Kasper cleared his throat and described his dire situation.Da: Freja fnisede, men hendes øjne strålede af hjælpsomhed.En: Freja giggled, but her eyes shone with helpfulness.Da: "Jeg har en stige, men du må love mig én ting," drillede hun.En: "I have a ladder, but you must promise me one thing," she teased.Da: "Jeg får lov at drille dig med den pyjamas resten af mit liv."En: "I get to tease you about those pajamas for the rest of my life."Da: Kasper nikkede modstræbende.En: Kasper nodded reluctantly.Da: Det var hans værste mareridt at blive alment kendt for miseren, men han indså, at han havde brug for hjælp.En: It was his worst nightmare to become commonly known for his mishap, but he realized he needed help.Da: Freja hentede stigen med lethed, og de gik sammen hen til Kaspers hus.En: Freja fetched the ladder with ease, and they walked together to Kasper's house.Da: "Skal vi vente til det bliver mørkt?"En: "Should we wait until it's dark?"Da: foreslog Kasper med et nervøst blik på de nysgerrige naboer, der allerede havde bemærket dem.En: suggested Kasper with a nervous glance at the curious neighbors who had already noticed them.Da: "Nej, jeg tror det er bedst, vi gør det nu.En: "No, I think it's best we do it now.Da: Ellers ender du med et publikum til midnatsforestillingen," svarede Freja med et grin.En: Otherwise, you'll end up with an audience for the midnight show," replied Freja with a laugh.Da: Med stigen op mod huset satte Kasper forsigtigt foden på det nederste trin.En: With the ladder up against the house, Kasper carefully placed his foot on the bottom rung.Da: Han tog en dyb indånding.En: He took a deep breath.Da: Nu ændrede situationen sig fra pinlig til dramatisk.En: Now the situation shifted from embarrassing to dramatic.Da: Freja holdt stigen fast og kom med opmuntrende bemærkninger, mens Kasper bevægede sig opad.En: Freja held the ladder steady and offered encouraging comments as Kasper moved upward.Da: Pludselig stoppede Kasper midtvejs, frosset af rædsel, da han så en gruppe af naboer stoppe op for at kigge på.En: Suddenly, Kasper stopped halfway, frozen in terror, as he saw a group of neighbors pause to watch.Da: Han kunne mærke farven stige op i ansigtet.En: He could feel the color rise in his face.Da: Freja rakte en hånd op og sagde roligt, "Kom nu, Kasper, du klarer den fint!En: Freja reached up a hand and said calmly, "Come on, Kasper, you're doing fine!Da: Tænk på historien, du kan skrive om det her!"En: Think of the story you can write about this!"Da: Det var præcis den inspiration han havde brug for.En: It was exactly the inspiration he needed.Da: Kasper tog en dyb vejrtrækning og kravlede videre, indtil han nåede det åbne vindue.En: Kasper took a deep breath and continued to climb until he reached the open window.Da: Med lidt akrobatik og held lykkedes det ham at smutte ind i huset.En: With a bit of acrobatics and luck, he managed to slip into the house.Da: Freja stod nedenfor og Join us this Sunday as Pastor Rob Byker continues his series, Daring to Draw Near, with a message from 2 Kings 5:1-19 titled “Even When You Feel Offended.” Naaman, a successful military commander from Aram, came to Israel seeking healing from the prophet Elisha. He expected something dramatic—but instead, Elisha sent a message through a servant telling him to wash in the muddy Jordan River. Offended by the simplicity and lack of ceremony, Naaman nearly walked away. Thankfully, his servants helped him see it was a blessing, not an insult. Like Naaman, we sometimes resist God's ways when they don't match our expectations. But God often works through humble, simple steps—not heroic efforts. As James writes, “Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.” Essentially, the message is “Come low. Come humble. Come ready to grieve your sins and then you will find that God “will lift you up.”(James 4:10) Want to learn more about Connections Church? Visit our website: https://myconnections.church/

In this gripping episode of Free Speech Forward, Chris and Joia speak with Naya Lekht—a Soviet-born educator and research fellow. Dr. Lekht exposes how American colleges mirror the totalitarian censorship her family escaped in the USSR. Drawing shocking parallels between Marxist indoctrination and today's campus culture, Lekht reveals why the "marketplace of ideas" has been replaced by sanctioned groupthink that's destroying critical thinking skills. As a high school teacher fighting back against educational decline, she shares her radical approach to "activating antennas"—teaching students to detect propaganda and find the courage to stand alone against conformity.Learn why Lekht considers the Pledge of Allegiance a litmus test for schools, how patriotism became a dirty word in education, and why both bad ideas and good ideas are essential for intellectual growth. This eye-opening conversation offers parents and educators practical strategies for reclaiming educational excellence while warning that freedom—far from being humanity's natural state—requires constant vigilance to preserve.Find out more about Dr. Naya Lekht and her work at: https://www.linkedin.com/in/naya-lekht-phd-0ba243a3/

Join Pastor Rob Byker as he shares a message from Psalm 73 in the Daring to Draw Near series, titled “Even When You Feel Bitter.” Ever feel bitter toward God? Asaph did too. In Psalm 73, he watched the wicked thrive while he suffered—and almost lost faith. But when he drew near in worship (v.17), his heart changed. Worship reorients us—even when life feels unfair. Last week, we talked about dreaming—giving ourselves permission to hope for delight and rest this summer. But what happens when those dreams meet reality? In Part 2 of the Sabbath Summer series, Dr. Dan Allender and Rachael Clinton Chen explore the tension between desire and disappointment—the beautiful and the broken that live side by side in us, in others, and in the world. Because Sabbath isn't just about dreaming and planning. It's about participating. Living into the play. But here's the truth: Things rarely go exactly as we imagined. Disappointment is often inevitable. And delight—true delight—often comes not in spite of brokenness, but within it. This episode is a deep invitation to stay in the story even when plans unravel. Dan and Rachael reflect on the paradox of Sabbath as a commandment that calls us not just to rest, but to remember what we're fighting for: connection, restoration, joy, and relationship—with ourselves, each other, and with God. Sabbath isn't an escape from the world's urgency—it's a radical act of resistance and reconstruction within it. As you listen, consider: How might you make space this summer not just for fun, but for redemptive play—play that embraces imperfection, disappointment, and still dares to hope? *This episode contains some explicit language. Listener discretion is advised.

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
There is a U-boat in the middle of Chicago. It's attached to the Museum of Science and Industry in Hyde Park. Generations of Chicagolanders, and their cousins from far away, have walked through U-505, but they don't always ask how in the world it got to Chicago.A crucial moment in the journey of U-505 to its permanent berth was on June 4, 1944. On that day for the first time in the history of the US Navy since, perhaps, October 7, 1864, the command “Away all boarders!” was given on the USS Pillsbury, part of the task force that had been searching for U-505 off the northwestern coast of Africa. Their challenge was to capture an underwater boat from the surface, and then keep it from sinking. How they got to that point, and what happened afterwards, is the subject of Alexander Rose's new book Phantom Fleet: The Hunt for U-505 and World War II's Most Daring Heist. In the course of describing one of the most audacious naval actions of the Second World War, Rose also reveals the secret war against German U-Boats.Alexander Rose is the bestselling author of Washington's Spies, as well as American Rifle, Men of War, The Lion and the Fox, and Empires of the Sky. Born in the United States, he grew up in Australia, was semi-educated in England, worked in Canada, and now lives in New York. He also claims to be a committed listener to Historically Thinking.
