This is the space where individuality thrives, where traditions are bent or broken, and where embroidery becomes a deeply personal language of expression.Rules, patterns and expectations become blurred with stitches finding themselves wandering every which way, where colour choices are meant to surprise or challenge and where compositions tend to make you want to stop and think.Join me as I explore four embroidery artists who break rules or use a technique unexpectedly, but to my mind, that only enriches and enhances the world of embroidery as they explore and develop.Show Notes: https://stitchsafari.com/idiosyncratic-em…daring-to-differ/

Today I'm delighted to welcome back Elizabeth Glenn-Copeland who previously joined me to share her amazing wisdom and some of her soulful poetry from her incredible book Daring To Hope at the Cliff's Edge in Episode 35. Elizabeth is currently on a UK and Europe tour with her composer husband Beverly Glenn-Copeland, if you have the opportunity to see them live then I highly recommend it. They also have a beautiful new album Laughter in Summer which is available for Pre-order: https://beverlyglenncopeland.comToday we honour the incredible legacy of one of Elizabeth's cherished mentors Joanna Macy environmental activist, author and scholar of Buddhism, general systems theory and deep ecology who transitioned from this world in July 2025. Elizabeth guides us with poetry and gentle compassion to explore some of the principles of The Work That Reconnects, which Joanna created as the ground-breaking framework for personal and social change that helps people take the despair and apathy we feel and transform it into constructive, collaborative action. From gratitude and honouring the pain we witness in ourselves and the world around us, to finding a new story and vision to hold as we move forward and write the future for the earth and humanity that we want to bring into being. Remember Hope is a verb, it is meant to be active not passive, it is a practice that we must tend daily to cultivate the change we want to see in our world.Learn more about ElizabethElizabeth Glenn-Copeland is a writer, theatre maker and arts educator whose career over the last forty years has evolved at the intersection of arts and activism. She has long had a passion for communicating with the animate world that began in childhood high up in the arms of an old weeping willow. Fast forward sixty years -- Elizabeth is offered a writing residency at the Joggins Fossil Institute, a UNESCO World Heritage site on the mighty Bay of Fundy. She jumps at the chance to connect/converse with 300 million-year-old-rock, to go to Stone as supplicant, to fully engage with sea and sand and sky and winged helpers to deepen her connection to the living world. What emerged was a narrative of the odyssey in poetic form, “Daring to Hope at the Cliff's Edge: Pangea's Dream Remembered”.Music journalist, Nick Storring says of the this work:“Lyrical, bewildering, heartening, and unsettling, this work sees an individual voice reckoning with the overwhelming complexity of our present moment.”Elizabeth lives in Hamilton, Ontario with her composer husband, Beverly Glenn-Copeland.Purchase ‘Daring to Hope…': https://chapelstreeteditions.com/book-catagories/poetry/daring-to-hope-at-the-cliffs-edge/Instagram: @beverlyglenncopelandDiscover the work of Joanna Macy: https://www.joannamacy.net/The Work That Reconnects: https://workthatreconnects.org/Support the showThank you for being part of this journey with me, please Subscribe so you don't miss our future episodes, leave a review & share with friends to help these messages ripple out across the world. Caleb Drahosh In Paul's final greeting to the Romans, we learn that the letter was recorded by Tertius. Gaius hosted Paul, likely in Corinth. We learn of Erastus, the city treasurer, and Quartus as well. These men were of varying statuses, but all served Christ where they were stationed. Pen and ink, civic service, and hospitality are some of the simple, yet profound, tools used in the upbuilding of the church and the advancement of Christ's Kingdom on earth.

In this episode, Cindy Esliger explores how we can dare to be more at work and avoid slipping into the conformity we think is expected. We're conditioned to believe we need to keep our heads down, fit in, and work longer and harder than anyone else in order to succeed. But we were hired because of something unique that we brought to the company. Cindy dives into how we can reclaim the parts of ourselves that we've been hiding for a more authentic and rewarding work experience. Constant hustle and overachieving without acknowledgement doesn't always lead to feeling more fulfilled. Especially not if we're stifling our creativity and actual personality in order to do so. Instead of blending in so we appear more palatable, Cindy encourages us to start daring to be more with small steps. Perhaps we say what we're actually thinking or the ideas we truly have in a meeting. Perhaps we use our natural humor to liven things up when people's attention is waning. Start small. And keep going.Work can still feel energizing and challenging the way it did in the beginning if we don't allow ourselves to be dulled by performative norms and the exhausting pressure to be proper and polished at all costs. We do it to belong, but Cindy suggests that belonging isn't blending in. Belonging is about being seen as who we are and still being accepted. She shares advice on reframing how we show up at work and offers small steps we can take to facilitate our journey towards daring to be more.Resources discussed in this episode:Guide to Daring to be More at WorkAstronomic AudioConfidence Collective—Contact Cindy Esliger Career Confidence Coaching: website | instagram | facebook | linkedin | email Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. During World War II, the United States housed hundreds of thousands of enemy soldiers who had been captured as prisoners of war. Camp Papago Park, located in Phoenix, was built to hold captured German U-boat crew members, some of the most well-trained and ardent members of the German military. Authorities hoped that the harsh Arizona desert would deter any escape attempts, but they underestimated the German soldiers' determination to return to battle.Under the watchful eyes of the American guards, over 20 German soldiers dug their way out Camp Papago Park and kicked off the largest manhunt in American history. In this episode, Cindy Esliger talks about hope. Hope is complicated. It keeps us going, but it can also sometimes feel dangerous. Hope spurs us onward when we meet resistance, but it also opens the door to disappointment, so we learn not to expect too much. Cindy counters this by asking what if hope isn't some fragile emotion that leaves us vulnerable, but instead is a fierce and necessary force that drives us to act with clarity? She examines how to embrace hope not as a risk but as a strategy, and offers us tips on how to make hope work for us.Feeling hopeful can feel risky when we are frequently denied what we want. But giving up hope feels even worse. Daring to hope says that we believe there's more out there and that we're going to find it. It's not naive, it's grounded in action. Cindy describes how we can maintain an open mind about what might be attainable, and why we need to stop confusing passive wishing with purposeful hope. The psychological force called negativity bias was once a survival skill, but now it just keeps us focused on what's wrong. Cindy talks about how to combat that. The good news is we can retrain our brains. Cindy offers three simple questions for us to answer nightly that will help us break away from fear and worst-case scenarios. 1. What is one good thing we can appreciate about today? 2. What are we hopeful about for tomorrow or the future? And 3. What inner strength did we demonstrate today? Cindy emphasizes that it's okay to want more than what we currently have and shows us how hope allows us to advocate for ourselves with confidence.Resources discussed in this episode:Guide to Tracking Your Hopes For The FutureAstronomic AudioConfidence Collective—Contact Cindy Esliger Career Confidence Coaching: website | instagram | facebook | linkedin | email Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. In 1909, a young convicted train robber named Frank Grigware began a life sentence at the United States Penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas. Leavenworth was the nation's first federal penitentiary, touted as a state-of-the-art facility. But in the early 20th century, its prisoners endured bleak conditions, rigid routines, and harsh punishments. In the spring of 1910, Grigware and five fellow inmates hijacked a supply train and rammed it through the prison's heavy iron gates. The audacious breakout set off one of the longest-running manhunts in American history.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! Welcome to the Mind Movement Health podcast! Kate Boyle interviews Nancy Griffin about the powerful link between health and wealth for women, practical steps to build financial security, and the role of insurance, trusted advisors, and philanthropy. The episode covers how to start planning at any age, teach the next generation, and make confident decisions to protect and grow your net worth while enhancing self-worth. Connect with Nancy Griffin: Nancy is a connector and influencer. She attributes her success to personal courage, determination, and joy, when focusing on women's health and wellness, hence creating Women, Worth & Wellness®. Nancy enjoys every opportunity to inspire and inform women about their personal health and wealth, net worth and self-worth, philanthropy and legacy—so that women feel fabulous, generous, joyful, confident, and on top of their game every day. Nancy Griffin established Women, Worth & Wellness in 1994 as a Private Client Wealth Advisor for her female clients and their families. Nancy continues to promote and inspire Daring & Caring Leaders, encouraging them to step up and lead in the world, following in the footsteps from many other powerful Women Leaders in the past. Nancy's overall purpose is to connect and influence for positive impact every chance she gets. “My Mom was a trailblazer as a women business owner and felt that women should have their own money and wealth–including their own ideas about what to invest in. She was my inspiration for focusing on health, along with wealth, as she would often say “if you don't have your health, you don't have anything. " This has always been my focus as I worked with my clients, especially women, as women often have a disproportionate responsibility to family's health and wellness. An equal focus on health and wealth is inseparable." Reviews ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - from inappropriately dressed rape victim - Best podcast ever, absolutely flawless. There is nothing they could do to make it any more perfect. 4/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - from Zack - This is the best gun podcast around. Not only do they give great info about guns and new products but also amazing book recommendations. If you are new you should go back and listen to the old episodes and can see how the cast has grown and changed. Except Aaron he is still a cunt who can barely keep a job for more than a year or two. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - from Big Hoss - I've been listening since the beginning. I love the cast. At least most of them. They bring a diverse amount of opinions and knowledge. Even Aaron. However, Savage can be just annoying. A meditation preached by Fr. Eric Nicolai, at Roseaire Conference Centre in Delray Beach,Florida, September 13, 2025.In his encyclical, Spe Salvi, Pope Benedict XVI explained that hope can be performative not merely informative. Christian hope is not just knowledge or belief about the future. There is more: There is dynamic power that changes how people live and act in the present. Hope does something. It can make us bold and daring in approaching apostolic challenges.Music: Michel Lee, Toronto.

Located amid the treacherous waters of the San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was designed to hold the most-wanted prisoners in America, and developed a reputation as an unbreakable fortress. But from the moment Frank Lee Morris set foot on the island in 1962, he was determined to break free. Together, with three other conspirators, he hatched a cunning plan that would become one of the most elaborate attempts at a prison break in history, defying a prison crawling with guards and surrounded by chilly ocean waters, in their unlikely bid for freedom.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! What if boyhood isn't a problem to fix—but a strength to steward? In this energizing, tender conversation, Ginny Yurich and author Rebekah Lovell dismantle the myth that lively boys need taming. From a golf-cart rescue on Rebekah's farm to the everyday habits that build courage and character, they name what our culture gets wrong: over-scheduling, medicating drive, and treating noise, dirt, and risk like defects. They also offer a hopeful path back with ideas like service before entertainment, real responsibility, and wide-open hours outside. You'll leave with a practical playbook for reviving boyhood at any age: daily read-alouds, purposeful risk (trees, tools, real work), and simple rhythms that turn “busy” into brave. Start Rebekah's free Outdoor Reading Club to pair books with sunshine, then use this episode as your nudge to cut screen clutter, unschedule a little, and watch initiative bloom. If you've sensed that childhood is being tamed indoors, this is your permission and your plan to bring back wonder, grit, joy and lots of dirt. Genesis: The Story of Apollo 8, the First Manned Flight to Another World Author: Bob Zimmerman Segment 4: NASA's Daring Gamble: Responding to Soviet Failures NASA's decision to send Apollo 8 on a circumlunar mission was a bold, aggressive move spurred by the Soviet Zondprogram. While the lunar module was behind schedule, George Low, manager of the Apollo program, proposed sending Apollo 8 to the moon after observing Soviet progress and knowing a simple Earth orbit repetition was a waste. The Soviets experienced failures with Zond 4 (self-destructed), Zond 5 (ballistic re-entry), and Zond 6 (lost atmosphere), which canceled their manned lunar mission. Low and Sam Phillips made the decision, informing a furious but ultimately supportive James Webb, NASA's head. This "gamble" was driven by the desire to prove American capabilities in the space race. 1957 SPUTNIK

In February 1864, more than 100 Union Army officers broke out of Libby Prison, an infamous Confederate prisoner of war compound in Richmond, Virginia. It was the largest prison break of the Civil War. Libby held more than 1,000 Union officers who were crammed into the former tobacco warehouse. They faced rampant illness, meager rations, and constant abuse from sadistic guards. As conditions worsened and the death toll mounted, a small crew of prisoners resolved to escape. Working in secret, they excavated a narrow tunnel out of Libby's rat-infested cellar in a daring attempt to dig their way to freedom.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! Dr Alison sits down with therapist and author Nicole Zasowski to talk about her journey of choosing joy in the face of loss. Nicole shares how she discovered that joy can be the most vulnerable emotion of all - and why learning to celebrate is one of the most important practices we can cultivate in our lives. Together, you'll learn: The surprising reason joy can feel harder than grief or disappointment The difference between toxic positivity and true, grounded joy Why pessimism and cynicism are really forms of control Practical ways to retrain your mind to savor what's good—even in difficult seasons What Scripture and neuroscience teach us about joy
As Franco Zeffirelli prepared to film his critically acclaimed version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, he made a daring decision. He chose two unknowns to play the lead characters and insisted they be close to the age of the characters as Shakespeare had penned them. Zeffirelli ultimately selected seventeen-year-old Leonard Whiting as Romeo and sixteen-year-old Olivia Hussey as Juliet. Some might think that Jesus took a similar risk with the selection of His disciples, who would be charged with an infinitely more important role. The task of taking His message of forgiveness to the world would be entrusted to simple men who were, at the very least, undereducated. In fact, when some of these early believers in Jesus were arrested and questioned, the religious leaders were stunned. Acts 4:13 says, “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished.” Any assumed risk was more than overwhelmed by the real story behind these simple fishermen: “They took note that these men had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13). The seemingly unqualified disciples had not only been with Christ, but they also had His promise to be with them always (Matthew 28:20). We share that promise as well (Hebrews 13:5) and can be assured that, in His presence and with His grace, no task set before us will be too great for Him.
