Who do you think you are? What do you think you are?We can all find myriad ways to describe ourselves and we often rely on these descriptors to give us our ‘sense of identity.' “I'm a mother of three, a nuclear physicist, a passionate tango dancer and an advocate for animal rights…”The problem with this approach is that our descriptors are always subject to change, and even subject to debate in some cases. We're only ‘young' until we become not so young. We're only ‘successful' until we redefine what success is, which is often based on someone else's judgment. We're only X until it becomes more fashionable to be Y and it suits us better to become one of those…So is it any wonder that most of us have this gnawing sense of uncertainty. We're trying to build a sense of identity on the shifting sands of circumstances and subjective judgments. And as soon as we do settle on a solid sense of identity, something changes to make it shaky again.Thom's got your back though. By the end of this episode you'll ‘hardly know yourself,' but if you follow Thom's counsel, you'll know yourself better than you ever have.Episode highlights: [00:50] Who We Are and What We Are[02:02] "I'm a This. YouTube episode: https://youtu.be/QhfpLYvjVN8 The image on the thumbnail shows a yogi in meditation with the three channels on the spinal column. Next to his mouth is the Tibetan letter Ha ཧ. Above his head is a flame, and above that flame, the letter A ཨ, and from that letter A ཨ we see a splendorous radiation and then an image of heaven or nirvana (click here for the full image: https://i.imgur.com/Hl2QZQu.jpg) This image is related to a tradition called Tummo, which is a particular type of technique that is taught in a variety of schools of Buddhism. In the Gnostic tradition we call it Pranayama. There are many varieties of Pranayama exercises. The Sanskrit word Pranayama means “to harness the winds.” It is not referring to physical wind, but ethereal wind—in other words, what we call "ether". To harness the winds is to harness energies. Those energies is shown here in this path that leads to this temple in the internal (Astral) worlds. The yogi is using mantras; these letters are A and Ha, but they did not paint the whole mantra. The whole mantra is "Ham-Sah". The sound that makes the fire is: "Ssssssssaaaahhh". The image shows the vowel Ha ཧ by his mouth. When practicing the pranayama Ham-Sah, "Ham" is the mantra we pronounce mentally when we breathe in; we breathe in the air to take the vital currents, the ethereal currents, into the body. We imagine that energy rising up the spinal column as we mentally pronounce the mantra "Haaaammmmm", and all that energy is going up the spine into the brain. This brings the waters, from the bottom to the top, the lower waters to the upper waters, the waters of sex to the waters of the brain: "Haaaammmm". Then the fire that is in the water irradiates the brain, rejuvenates it, gives it life and energy, and then the Yogi says "Ssssssssssaaaaaaahhhh" with the exhalation. In total, this causes the fire in the waters to rise to the brain, illuminate the pineal gland, and open clairvoyance, to give us the power to see beyond the physical senses. It is very beautifully illustrated in this painting. 0:00 - Explanation of the Breathwork 4:48 - Guided Meditation Support Astral Doorway on Patreon & join my Discord group for live Q&As, guided meditations, dream interpretations, early-access episodes, news about my upcoming books, spiritual advice & more: https://www.patreon.com/astraldoorway

Lindsay brings us back to July 18, 1999, where we will accompany her to Yankee Stadium for 'Yogi Berra Day,' marking her grampa's return to the Bronx after nearly 15 years following a falling out with principal owner George M. Steinbrenner. It was a magical afternoon, with Don Larsen tossing the ceremonial first pitch to Yogi, tapping the gloves used by pitcher David Cone and catcher Joe Girardi. Cone, of course, went on to pitch the 16th perfect game in Major League history, a 6-0 blanking of the Montreal Expos. We'll share Yogi stories, discuss '90's pop culture (who knew Yogi was such a Seinfeld fan?) and much more!

Whether you are Catholic or not, Thom's answer will be of interest as he affirms the compatibility of the Vedic worldview, not just with Christianity, but with religion in general. And if you have trouble distinguishing between negative thinking and intuitive insights, Thom's answer to the second question in this episode will help you with this dilemma. You'll be pleased to know the answer is pretty straight forward. And last but not least, a situation that we'll all face more than once in our lifetime, how to help someone who is nearing the end of their life. We've seen huge growth in the popularity of yoga in recent years, and people turn to yoga for many different reasons. Today's show brings interesting insights and perspectives from a longtime expert in the field. Join us for this beautiful conversation. Eddie Stern is a yogi, author, and lecturer from NYC. He has studied yoga since 1987 and runs the Broome Street Ganesha Temple in Soho. His latest book, https://amzn.to/3y1noVD (One Simple Thing: A New Look at the Science of Yoga and How It Can TransformYour Life), examines a decade's worth of study on the correlations between the yogic and western views of the nervous system. The book gives an in-depth look at the underlying scientific mechanisms that make yoga work. This is an enlightening conversation about breath and its importance to yoga, the cool story of the founding of the Ganesha Temple, and Eddie's surprising views about yoga in the US today. The beautiful Broome Street Ganesha Temple is the site of our interview, which unfortunately ended abruptly with technical difficulties. You'll miss some of Eddie's answers to my rapid-fire questions, especially about the books he's reading, but we've included two of his recommendations in our Resources section.  Show Highlights: Why the Broome Street Ganesha Temple is a labor of love that has taken several years to become “a beautiful sanctuary in the middle of the city” Eddie's journey to yoga, which began around age 19-20 and became the most important part of his life Why the science of yoga intrigues and fascinates Eddie How the science of breath ties into yoga and has become a prominent subject in recent years How breathing and other autonomic functions help restore and maintain balance in our bodies Why the yogic tradition teaches that we should measure our lives in breaths Why we should apply the idea of expansiveness to our sense of time and allow breathing to slow down the speed of our minds Why most yoga practices are only surface level, where people attempt to live more conscious lives How yoga is greatly misrepresented in the west Why Eddie wrote his book, One Simple Thing Eddie's thoughts about gurus, the guru tradition, and the correlation to yoga Why the guru tradition probably won't work in America because of our hedonistic attitudes The connection between activism, social justice, and effecting change in yoga practice How Eddie views his relationship with social media and his advice about using social media What it means to Eddie to live in his purpose Hear Eddie's answers to rapid-fire questions about helpful advice, grounding habits, favorite hot beverage, last meal on earth, an inspiring person, and his morning routine Resources: Connect with Eddie: https://eddiestern.com/ ( www.eddiestern.com),https://broomestreetganesh.org/ ( Broome Street Ganesh), andhttp://www.instagram.com/eddiestern ( Instagram) https://amzn.to/3y1noVD (One Simple Thing: A New Look at the Science of Yoga and How It Can Transform Your Life,) by Eddie Stern Also mentioned in this episode: https://amzn.to/3735h6D (Autobiography of a Yogi,) by Paramahansa Yogananda https://amzn.to/3xZuiuu (Be Here Now,) by Ram Dass Connect with me: Join me for myhttps://weaveyourbliss.ck.page/86140bff98 ( FREE Aligned AF Visibility Challenge) starting soon! Does Vedic Meditation Expose Us to Evil Influences?

Does “opening the mind” through Vedic Meditation create a portal or opportunity for evil or satanic influences to enter the mind? This question is relatively easy to answer. In fact, in this episode Thom doesn't even get to the second part of the question and spends a short time addressing the first part, the notion of Vedic Meditation opening the mind. While it's certainly true that Vedic meditators are usually open-minded people, this is in the sense of being broad minded rather than having an exposed or vulnerable mind.Vedic Meditation actually has the opposite effect. It dissipates stress and reduces the likelihood of suggestibility and allows one to become more aligned with the laws of Nature, rather than being susceptible to anything opposing the laws of Nature. So if you're feeling the need to build a ‘spiritual firewall' for yourself, this is the episode for you.Episode Highlights: [00:48] An Open Mind About Vedic Meditation[02:08] One Becomes What One Sees[03:34] The Impact of Vedic Meditation[05:28] Meditators Need Not Be Concerned About the Biased ViewsUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.com https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoles/https://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoles https://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/

Marni welcomes the hosts of the mental health podcast, A Little Help for Our Friends, Jaqueline Trumbull, and Kibby McMahon. Jaqueline is a member of Bachelor Nation, a Ph. D. student at Duke, who studies how interpersonal functioning is impacted by personality, and shame, and contempt. Kibby is a Clinical Psychologist and a Yogi whose passion is in helping people connect more deeply with themselves and others.   Key takeaways from this episode:   Why we do what we do Changing our narrative Managing emotions The importance of trying something new in dating Applying a growth mindset to life   How Jaqueline & Kibby Came Together [5:01]   Jaqueline and Kibby met at Duke University. They discovered they had stimulating conversations together. Jaqueline had been on the Bachelor which created a bit of a social media following. The duo decided to create a podcast to use their power for good. The podcast, A Little Help for Our Friends, focused on the mental health sphere of people who were suffering collateral damage from mental health issues and personality disorders.   Why We Do What We Do [8:32]   The love we receive as a child becomes our narrative for what love should look like. It can create definitive schemas, which are the way we perceive ourselves in the world. It may be that we develop a schema that we don't deserve love or that we are not important in a relationship. As we grow older and get into relationships, we attract people who make us feel like love made us feel when we were smaller. We stay in the pattern until we change it and we play out stories that don't feel resolved.   The love you received as a child becomes your narrative for what love looks like in your life going forward.   Our identities are flexible and can change over time. We have a choice in the identity we want to take on. Some people are afraid of what change will look like for them. We can change without destabilizing ourselves.   Becoming Emotionally Bonded & Regulating Emotions [19:15]   Marni asks the co-hosts of A Little Help for Our Friends what contributes to our emotional bonding. At certain times in our lives, we may emotionally bond with people who fill certain needs even though they may not be suitable for long-term commitments. It's important to ask ourselves what the relationship is serving. If it fills an unmet need from childhood it may not last.   Happiness and living a meaningful life are living in accordance with our values. But, to know our values we have to dig deep into what we want for ourselves. Emotions make us do things that may not be aligned with our values. Negative emotions aren't bad, they just direct us to do certain things.   Inaction is a choice.   Make a Connection: Visit Our Website Plug Into Your Superpower Retreat — Apply at DatingwithDignity.com/pluginform Join Our Dating Den Facebook Community Here! Few would argue that we often lack reverence in modern day-to-day living. Toasts are given and glasses are raised, often at the drop of a hat. Families might go for years without even sitting at the same table for a meal, let alone saying grace or giving thanks for a shared meal and loving company. One notable exception to this trend is the use of Puja when a student of Vedic Meditation receives their mantra. It's a beautiful and important tradition that any committed teacher of Vedic Meditation takes seriously. In this episode, Thom explains the significance and purpose of Puja, and why we treat the process with the respect that it deserves, not just to honor the generations of masters that have kept the tradition alive, but also to honor the student, and to welcome them to what will likely be the most progressive step they will take in their evolution.Episode Highlights: [00:49] Touching On the State of Being[02:17] Puja - A Ceremony of Gratitude[03:58] The Troth of a Vedic Meditation Teacher[05:23] A Model of Ideal Teaching[06:45] “Initiation Day”[08:23] Face to Face, In Person[10:16] A Tradition of Knowledge[11:40] A Teacher in Good Standing[13:09] Learning Vedic Meditation The Hard Way[14:32] A Great Teacher Has StandardsUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.com https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoles/https://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoles https://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/

The recent conjunction of Neptune and Jupiter in Pisces which occurred on April 12, 2022, opened galactic portals to spiritual light, and shifted consciousness for those who are ready to go to the next level! In this episode, enjoy inspiration from  a spiritual pioneer, Paramahamsa Yogananda, from his book “Autobiography of a Yogi", which  is relevant for these times.  It is very appropriate at this time of a major astrological conjunction of Neptune and Jupiter in Pisces, to share this information from a spiritual master who lead a revolution in consciousness over 100 years ago, and inspired so many of us to follow the spiritual path. His teachings are so profound and necessary at this time.Stay tuned until the end of the episode when Jill reads an excerpt from her favorite chapter of "Autobiography of a Yogi," entitled "Outwitting the Stars." Paramahansa Yogananda and his book “Autobiography of a Yogi," has had profound impact on many people's lives including famous people and spiritual seekers for almost a century.  Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple,  felt a deep heartfelt connection to Yogananda, because of the book Autobiography of Yogi.  The only book that Steve had downloaded on his Apple iPad 2 for regular reading was – Autobiography of a Yogi. It is an autobiography written by Paramahansa Yogananda  in 1946, in which he discusses his life story, and which introduced many Westerners to meditation and yoga. The book describes Yogananda's search for a guru, and his encounters with leading spiritual figures such as Therese Neumann, the Hindu saint Sri Anandamaya Ma, Mohandas Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Sir C. V. Raman, and noted American plant scientist Luther Burbank . There is the famous story of Steve Jobs discovering Autobiography of a Yogi at the age of 17 and reportedly read it every single year of his life until he passed away in 2011 at the age of fifty-six. So that's nearly forty times. Not only that, but he gifted it to every single person who came to his funeral services. Paramahansa Yogananda was an Indian Saint who was born January 5, 1893 and died on March 7, 1952.  He was labeled a “Prema avatar” or incarnation of love.  He is best known for his pivotal book, “The Autobiography of a Yogi,” which was published in 1946 and hailed as one of the most important spiritual books of modern times. He began the organization, SRF, Self Realization Fellowship in 1920.  Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) is a worldwide spiritual organization fo legally incorporated as a non-profit religious organization to serve as Yogananda's instrument for the preservation and worldwide dissemination of his writings and teachings.  SRF continues to educate many on his teachings, and Kriya Yoga, which were the yogic, breathing and meditation techniques taught by Yogananda. . Here are some inspiring quotes from Paramahansa Yogananda:“Live quietly in the moment and see the beauty of all before you. The future will take care of itself......”“Be as simple as you can be; you will be astonished to see how uncomplicated and happy your life can become.”“You must not let your life run in the ordinary way; do something that nobody else has done, something that will dazzle the world. Show that God's creative“You have come to earth to entertain and to be entertained.“There is a magnet in your heart that will attract true friends. That magnet is unselfishness, thinking of others first; when you learn to live for others, they will live for you.”“The power of unfulfilled desires is the root of all man's slavery”“forget the past, for it is gone from your domain! forget the future, for it is beyond your reach! control the present!
