Anne C. Klein on Becoming a Buddha & Being Human too

You're human, but are you also a Buddha? If so, which one comes first? What does it mean to be human? What is a Buddha exactly? Is our humanity lost or superseded if we become a Buddha? Such questions might interest our more philosophical listeners. Being Human and a Buddha Too (Wisdom Publications, 2023) by today's guest Anne Klein explores the 7-point mind training of Longchenpa, a 14th century Tibetan Scholar and Yogi from the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Anne is professor of religion at Rice University, a co-founder of the Dawn Mountain centre for Tibetan Buddhism in Housten, Texas, and a lama in the Nyingma tradition herself. Her key research areas are Tibet and Indian epistemology, Tibetan texts and language. We touch on the following themes and questions; How do you manage the dual roles of university academic and Nyingma Lama? Buddhism in the West has gone through a lot and very quickly since its more prominent emergence in the 1960s. Do you have any thoughts on Buddhism's future in the west and whether it will maintain any significant presence once its key teachers from the boomer generation begin to pass away? Whether its problematic teachers, or, and perhaps more importantly, the insistence on a model that it antithetical to western modes of teacher student interaction, the Tibetan Lama, guru and core figure cannot escape a compatibility issue with Western norms. Worse for some still, there is also an increasing lack of teacher availability for those willing to embrace this model. Thoughts? What are we to do with language and the hermeneutic challenges its presents for translators of old Tibetan texts? Why this book? Why now? You have a series of events coming up, including retreats with translators in Germany, Switzerland and in Italy. Can you tell us about that and how listeners can get involved if they wish to? Many of us come to yoga seeking relief. Relief from pain, from restlessness, from uncertainty. And sometimes we find it. But over time, what we discover is more lasting than relief. We discover presence. We discover steadiness. We discover a kind of joy that doesn't have to shout. It only has to be. So we practice. Not to get rid of pain, but to know it. To meet it with clarity and care. And in that meeting, we find something remarkable: joy is still possible.   It is a joy that knows sorrow. A happiness that is not threatened by difficulty. This is the depth of saumanasya. Saumanasya is defined by Patañjali as cheerfulness—it could also be translated as “mental clarity,” “gentle gladness,” or even “spiritual contentment.” But this is not about putting on a smile or chasing a feeling. It's the natural radiance of a mind that has become unentangled. In Pāli, the same word appears as saumanassa, and it's spoken of as a kind of mental vedanā—a feeling tone that arises not from external stimulation, but from deep, internal stillness.   It's not the kind of joy that explodes in celebration or depends on everything going our way. It's the joy that arises when the striving quiets down. When the noise fades. When the heart is unburdened. And perhaps most beautifully, it's a joy that does not replace suffering, but includes it.   Practice LIVE with me exclusively on Omstars! Yogi Berra was famous for being one of the best catchers for the New York Yankee's. But what he's most famous for are his humorously ironic aphorisms, like: "A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore", or "It's like deja-vu all over again", and this one about the future: "It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future." Ol' Yogi ... he always had 'em rollin' in the aisles! But he's right about how we can feel unsure about the future. In fact, in a 2022 poll, half responded that over the next 12 months, they were worried about the direction of our country, and 1/4 had little hope for the future. Strange because it had not even happened yet! What's important to know is that God takes our future very seriously. The Eternal One, who invented time, and is the only one outside of time, told us: "Don't be anxious about anything." If he sees everything and isn't worried - why should we? And yet we can't help it! This is the topic of this week's podcast! Don't miss Sean and Nate's discussion! ▶️ Nate's Message on YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/ytp4e3df

The Heart of Yoga

The Yoga Tantras that Krishnamacharya graciously brought forth teach us direct participation in Reality and the qualities or nature of Reality. They flush from the living body the restive patterning and traumas that culture and society has put in us. These Tantras disappeared in India & Tibet after the 14th century replaced by authoritarian power structures.  In this powerful episode of The Heart of Yoga Podcast, Mark returns with scholar and heart of Yoga teacher Andrew Raba for a deeply vulnerable & piercing conversation on the core wounds of society: the denial of the feminine, the suppression of sexual wisdom, and the destructive legacy of religious thinking that created world mind. Together, they unravel the heavy conditioning that shapes our views of intimacy, self-improvement, and the male fantasy of enlightenment. Together they point us back to the radical truth: that the source & the seen are one. With candor, grief, humor and hope, Mark and Andrew explore how Yoga is participation in What is already the case, real & natural. They discuss… How the ancient idea of enlightenment has created harmful hierarchies that separate the spiritual from the sexual and the sacred from the ordinary. The personal and collective consequences of suppressing the feminine, intimacy & body intelligence.  Why intimacy is often the battleground for inherited trauma, shame, and confusion—how Yoga can help us participate in love, the unity condition that is life, without seeking to “fix” or “transcend” ourselves. Mark's reflections on sex, relationship, and receiving each other is the only sacred life there is.  The power of whole-body breathing, above to below, inhalation to exhalation, strength to receptivity reconnects us to What is real, beyond religious dogma or self-improvement fantasies and struggles.  They discuss… How the ancient idea of enlightenment has created harmful hierarchies that separate the spiritual from the sexual and the sacred from the ordinary. The personal and collective consequences of suppressing the feminine, intimacy, and embodied wisdom. Andrew's journey from academic seeker to awakened Yogi, and how one simple truth—the source and the seen are one—transformed his life. Why intimacy is often the battleground for inherited trauma, shame, and spiritual confusion—and how Yoga can help us participate in love without seeking to “fix” or “transcend” ourselves. Mark's reflections on sex, relationship, and receiving the other as a sacred, cosmic act—not as a spiritual obstacle. The power of whole-body Yoga to reconnect us with what's real, beyond religious dogma or self-improvement fantasies. Favorite Phrases: “Life is perfectly expressing itself through you. What could create a human body? That power is not somewhere else—it's here, as this.” “Sex is not something done to get something. It is to participate in what life actually is.” “Male does not receive female—and that's the core wound of civilization.” Resources Mentioned: Teachings of T. Krishnamacharya Taoist insights into yin-yang and sacred sexuality Reflections on world religions, mystic traditions, and cultural conditioning Timestamps: [00:00:00] Opening reflection on hierarchy, enlightenment, and the denial of the feminine [00:02:00] Introduction to guest Andrew Raba and his background [00:06:00] Andrew shares his transformation after hearing “the source and the seen are one” [00:10:00] The collapse of the seeking framework and the emergence of presence [00:16:00] The deep cultural programming around sex, love, and spirituality [00:23:00] Exploring karmic patterns, judgment, and self-forgiveness [00:31:00] Reclaiming sex as participation, not transaction [00:36:00] The role of Yoga as a daily reflection and realignment with truth [00:42:00] Mark and Andrew discuss the union of opposites and the healing of gender divisions [00:47:00] Closing thoughts on spiritual honesty, Yoga as participation, and receiving the other

Today, my guest, Reema Dutta, will share these timeless teachings with us, emphasizing the practices and principles we can adopt to enhance our lives. Reema Datta is the founder of the Yogi's Way, a holistic method that integrates movement, breathing, and consciousness practices with a focus on emotional well-being. How do decades of spiritual practice shape your heart when death comes knocking? In this powerful episode, we hear from our longtime friend Yasso who, after forty years of devotion, is now facing terminal illness with stunning clarity and peace. What makes this conversation especially moving is how Yasso's fearless, attitude of gratitude so closely mirrors the timeless wisdom of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, where the dying King Parīkṣit embraces his final days with devotion, humility, and total absorption in the divine. Also in this episode: the epic homecoming of Lord Ram and the tear-jerking reunion with his brother Bharat, whose 14 years of radical simplicity (cow urine barley, anyone?) reflect the deepest brotherly devotion—zero envy, all love. And we also explore how devotional art can lift consciousness, using a vivid verse from the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam as our canvas. This one goes deep—real life, real death, and real bhakti. Key Highlights: * A rare window into how a bhakti yogi prepares to leave this world * Lord Ram returns to Ayodhya—no one has ever waved a chadar with more love * No envy, no ego—just love: the bond between Ram and Bharat * Why Krishna art > overpriced splatter art * Chant Hare Krishna and don't criticize. Hello babes! This weekend I am introducing you to David Richards ~ a former Marine, an Author, a Yogi and an all around incredible guy! He tells a story of forgiveness this week that is so POWERFUL that it had my jaw dropping during the telling. He also talks about his Near Death Experience that happened when he was a kid, and the fact that the memories returned later in life, to affirm something that David already suspected (is there a human soul or what?) makes it even more profound of a story. To check out what David is doing in this world, click here! THANK YOU ALL FOR LISTENING AND FOR THE REVIEWS! THE HUSTLE IS REALLY, REALLY, REAL, AND EVERY REVIEW HELPS SO VERY MUCH! I appreciate all the love and attention you give the pod everyone, it warms my heart! Your bit of beauty is this: something regional from New Mexico! Recently, some friends sent me video of a celebration-one that happened because they had just finished cleaning their acequia, for the 307th year in a row!!!! and every year, there's a huge party afterwards with community and friends. You might not have heard that word, acequia, but in the high desert, they are needed lifelines...and centuries ago, were carved into the land to bring water to thirsty farmland and farms. It's a sacred tradition honoring the land, honoring the water, and honoring the ancestors. This here is just the trailer, but I encourage you to watch the whole film. It's a sweet reminder that sometimes humans can work in tandem with nature, and not against it.

In this deeply personal episode of The Light Watkins Show, Light reconnects with Leon Logothetis—also known as "The Kindness Guy"—for their fourth conversation on the podcast. While Leon is widely known for his global adventures and bestselling Netflix show The Kindness Diaries, this episode reveals a different side of his journey—one rooted not in exploration of the world, but in an inner quest to answer one of life's biggest questions: Is God real? After years of seemingly “living the dream”—writing bestselling books, speaking in stadiums, and inspiring millions—Leon found himself sitting alone in his Hollywood home, penning a suicide note. What followed was a moment of divine intervention: a late-night phone call to his therapist, a spontaneous visit to a bookshop, and a chance encounter with Autobiography of a Yogi that sparked a decision to travel to India in search of God.Leon and Light unpack the inner landscape that led to this journey and the emotional depths that birthed his latest documentary, The Kindness Within. They explore the realities of mental health, even for those living seemingly purposeful lives, and how sharing your pain can often be the first step to healing. Leon speaks candidly about navigating backlash, staying authentic amidst criticism, and what it truly means to speak to someone's heart. This episode is a reminder that fulfillment doesn't always come from outer success—and that sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is follow a quiet nudge from within.Whether you believe in God, question it, or are simply searching for a deeper connection, Leon's journey will leave you reflecting on your own path—and the kindness waiting to be uncovered within.Send us a text message. We'd love to hear from you!
