The CEO of Heart Aerospace describes the development of a hybrid-electric 30-seat regional commercial aircraft. In the news, a near miss at Boston Logan between a landing Delta Air Lines flight and a departing American Airlines flight, NASA's Advanced Aircraft Concepts for Environmental Sustainability 2050 (AACES) program, Canada’s purchase of F-35A fighters and possibly Saab Gripens, and Canada’s look at early-warning-radar planes. Guest Anders Forslund is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Heart Aerospace, formed to electrify short-haul regional aviation. Heart Aerospace is developing the ES-30, a hybrid-electric 30-seat regional commercial aircraft. Heart is currently in upstate New York, testing the X1 demonstrator aircraft, which the company says will be the largest electric aircraft ever to fly. The company is backed by Bill Gates' Breakthrough Ventures and Y Combinator, as well as operator/investors United Airlines and Air Canada. Anders explains Heart Aerospace’s mission to lower the cost of air travel and how their clean-sheet Part 25 airliner will achieve about a 40% reduction in overall operating costs. The ES-30 will be an electric-motor-and-turboprop hybrid, while the full-scale X1 prototype is all-electric. The X1 demonstrator has completed low-speed taxi testing at the company’s X1 flight-test base at Plattsburgh International Airport in upstate New York. First flight is expected shortly, with type certification planned for 2031. Video: Heart X1 Completes Low-Speed Taxi Testing https://youtu.be/5jkyKevsJNI?si=1xreSjh_gRcI6xu2 Anders tells us about the Heart team and how aerospace development has changed in the last decade. The company strives to manage uncertainty rather than minimize it, holds itself accountable, and sets falsifiable goals. Before starting Heart, Anders was an aerospace researcher at Chalmers, where he was a driving force behind the Elise-Electric Aviation research project in Sweden, funded by the Swedish innovation agency Vinnova. He spent 2013-2014 at MIT, where his work on geometric variation of aerospace components was awarded the Charles M. Manly Memorial Medal. He is also a founding member of the Nordic Network for Electric Aviation. Anders has a Ph.D. in Aerospace Product Development and a B.Sc. in Engineering Physics from Chalmers. He has a dual M.Sc. in Astronautics and Space Engineering from Cranfield University and Luleå University, as part of the SpaceMaster program. He is also a member of Prince Daniel’s Fellowship for young entrepreneurs. Follow Heart Aerospace on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn. Aviation News Horrifying Near Miss at Boston Logan as Quick-Thinking Delta Air Pilots Go Around to Avoid Landing On Top of American Airlines Boeing 737 Delta Air Lines flight DL-2351, an Airbus A319 flying from Dallas, was landing at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), was cleared to land on runway 33L. Moments later, American Airlines flight AA-3161, a Boeing 737-800, was cleared to take off for Charlotte from intersecting runway 27. The pilots repeated the instruction back to the controller, and after about 40 seconds, started the takeoff. As Delta flight 2351 was about to touch down, the pilots saw the American Airlines plane and executed a go-around. That was followed by the air traffic controller asking the American flight, “American, where are you going?” Listen to the Incident Audio via @xJonNYC. Electra reveals 100-seat hybrid-electric aircraft concept Electra developed the concept under NASA's Advanced Aircraft Concepts for Environmental Sustainability 2050 (AACES) program. NASA has commissioned industry and academia to “develop transformative aircraft designs, propulsion technologies, and sustainability solutions for commercial aviation by 2050.” Electra's large airliner concept features a wide “double-bubble” fuselage that generates lift. Propulsion comes from two turbofans under the wings that produce thrust and electricity, as well as three fans mounted on the top of the aft fuselage. Electra says those fans would “ingest and re-energise slower-moving air over the fuselage, a technique known as boundary layer ingestion.” Other AACES participants include the Georgia Institute of Technology with the Liquefied Natural Gas Powered Athena Aircraft Concept, and JetZero with a hydrogen fueled blended wing body design. Congress Questions Air Force's Combat Rescue Readiness As HH-60W Helicopters Get Turned Into VIP Transports The Senate Armed Services Committee filed S. 4784, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2027 (NDAA), which establishes funding levels and authorities for the U.S. military. The 66th annual NDAA supports a total of $1.15 trillion in FY 2027 funding for national defense. In its report [PDF], the Committee expresses concern “about combat search and rescue (CSAR) force structure in the Air Force. In recent years, the Air Force truncated the buy of HH-60Ws and has since transferred 26 HH-60Ws from units responsible for CSAR operations to the Air Force District Washington (AFDW) to replace H-1 helicopters. AFDW uses these helicopters to support contingency response, homeland operations, and ceremonial honors in the National Capital Region. “The committee believes that these actions have left CSAR forces unnecessarily short of the forces needed to support CSAR operations in a major contingency. Therefore, the committee directs the Secretary of the Air Force to conduct a study of CSAR requirements and capabilities, including HH-60Ws and HC-130Js, and provide a report and briefing on that study to the congressional defense committees, not later than March 31, 2027. “Furthermore, the committee directs the Secretary to avoid making any changes in CSAR force structure until the study is completed and he or she has provided the results of that study to the Congress.” Canada Plans Fleet Surge to 140+ Fighters as Low Cost Gripens Reduce Expenses According to informed sources, the Royal Canadian Air Force plans to grow its fighter fleet to 140, possibly by purchasing Saab Gripen jets. Canada has planed to purchase 88 F-35A fighters, but that could drop to 70, accompanied by 70 Gripens. Saab offered to establish final assembly, maintenance, and long-term industrial support in Canada. This would transfer technology and intellectual property to Canada. Under the F-35 program, sustainment and software updates are centralized in the United States. Canada to buy Swedish surveillance plane over US models Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada would not purchase early-warning-radar planes from the United States. Instead, they will purchase Saab’s GlobalEye, which is based on the Bombardier Global 6500 jet, manufactured in Canada. Price and fleet size were not announced. Saab said in a statement that as part of any deal, the company would invest in research and development work in Canada. The Pentagon moved to defend Secretary of War Pete Hegseth after he recited a prayer at a Pentagon worship service that closely resembled a fictional monologue from Quentin Tarantino's 1994 film Pulp Fiction, a passage that has never appeared in the Bible. Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell addressed the controversy in a statement on X, writing, "Secretary Hegseth on Wednesday shared a custom prayer, referenced as the CSAR prayer, used by the brave warfighters of Sandy-1 who led the daylight rescue mission of Dude 44 Alpha out of Iran, which was obviously inspired by dialogue in Pulp Fiction. Secretary Hegseth on Wednesday shared a custom prayer, referenced as the CSAR prayer, used by the brave warfighters of Sandy-1 who led the daylight rescue mission of Dude 44 Alpha out of Iran, which was obviously inspired by dialogue in Pulp Fiction. During the worship service at the Pentagon, Hegseth said the prayer, known as "CSAR 25:17," had been used by "Sandy-1" combat search-and-rescue crews before missions, including a recent operation involving two U.S. Air Force personnel, who were shot down over Iran.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The rescue of the crew of DUDE 44, an F-15E Strike Eagle shot down over Iran, is one of the most complex and dangerous combat search and rescue (CSAR) operations in modern warfare. Retired USAF Colonel and Special Operations pilot Buck Walker breaks down how it happened – from the shootdown to the high-risk mission that brought the crew home. This is how CSAR really works.
Get to know John Chronological Experiences - John grew up in Ogden, Utah. He was the oldest of six brothers and one sister. After serving a church mission in the Canary Islands in Spain, John went to basic combat soldier training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. He then proceeded to Ft. Sam Houston, TX to be trained as a combat medic and a surgical technician and was the Distinguished Honor Graduate of his class. He served with the Utah 144th Combat Support Hospital. John went to Weber State University and earned a B.A. degree in psychology. During college, John worked part time on campus for the Services for Students with Disabilities, reading college text books for blind students. John stayed busy by also participating with the folk dance team, the institute chorale, a fraternity, the LDSSA committee, and the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) where he finished as Honor Graduate, class of 1997. Following a successful Army ROTC Advanced Camp and ranking in the top 5% of the nation, John was commissioned as an Army Intelligence Officer. After receiving his Top Secret Security Clearance and finishing his Tactical Intelligence Officer training in Ft. Huachuca, AZ, he was stationed at Ft. Gordon, GA with the 513th Military Intelligence Brigade. Here he served as a Company Executive Officer, Battalion Maintenance Officer, and Headquarter Company Executive Officer. John was deployed to Saudi Arabia in 1999 for Joint Task Force Southwest Asia (JTFSWA). He worked directly with the commander, Major General Schmidt, during Operation Desert Fox. He worked in the Joint Air Operations Center during real-time flight operations over Iraq and briefed the commander during these missions when Saddam Hussein was still in power. John was also responsible for theater-wide combat search and rescue (CSAR) operations. John was the liaison to the Saudi Arabian government officials as well as the French and British military officials who were part of the coalition. He produced and disseminated the releasable multinational force intelligence information for these partners. After several years of active duty, John again joined the Utah Army National Guard and his unit was activated to pull security at the Olympic Village for the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Olympics and Paralympics following the 911 attack. He worked directly with the Presidential Secret Service as well as the directors of intelligence and foreign dignitaries for various security functions. In 2002, John was deployed to war-ravaged Bosnia and Herzegovina as Operations Officer for Security Force 12. He led a counter intelligence team and nine human intelligence teams, consisting of Army Rangers, HUMINT collectors, and local interpreters. His teams produced intelligence information that was used by President Bush and Dick Cheney as justification for the second war in Iraq (declassified by Dick Cheney). John loved serving his country, but frequent absences were hard for a family with young children. So after a 10 year military career, he separated and finished his master's degree in business marketing. John spent several years working in various business ventures and industries including the National Federation of Independent Business. This is a small business lobbying group where he met with hundreds of business owners to understand their challenges with taxes, burdensome regulations, workers' compensation costs, and government overreach. Most recently, John has worked for major pharmaceutical and medical companies like Novo Nordisk and Myriad Genetics in pharmacogenomics testing. He has received many national awards and recognitions for his leadership and performance. During these decades, John enjoyed serving in his faith in various capacities and particularly as a scout master and ecclesiastical leader for his church. This time working with the youth has been some of his favorite years. Feeling the need to serve in all aspects of his life, he has also served for the past 20 years as a state delegate, county delegate, and precinct chair for Precinct SY11 in the Republican Party. Family - John is most grateful for his wife, Carrie. They have been married for 30 years and have six children, a son-in-law, a daughter-in-law, and a granddaughter. He is honored that his three eldest children currently serve their country in the Army. John has always tried to instill the value and blessings of serving in all capacities and for these reasons, he has felt the need to give more during a very turbulent time in our country. Faith - Above all, John considers himself a disciple of Jesus Christ. This is fundamental to everything he does. His faith, his family, and his freedoms are his greatest fundamental priorities. Hobbies & Fun Facts - John loves reading, writing, and studying. He is fascinated with eschatology and scripture, including Apocryphal texts. He loves to see how current world events align with scripture and sees prophecy being fulfilled in our day. He enjoys history and science and loves a good documentary. John loves playing basketball, softball, football, tennis, and soccer. He enjoys snow skiing, kayaking, cliff diving, and sky diving. He loves an ice plunge in a cold mountain lake. He still loves to do backflips on skis in his 50s, to the dismay of his wife. He loves hiking, canyoneering, camping, backpacking, fishing, gardening, and landscaping. He once made news on Disappointment Peak Grand Teton after a half ton boulder dislodged and landed on him breaking both his legs, among other injuries, but was miraculously saved. Rescuers needed a 300 foot rope and a helicopter to hoist him off the mountain. Working with youth has always been a priority for John and he especially enjoyed being a Scoutmaster. He is an Eagle Scout and helped many youth earn theirs. John saved two lives using the Heimlich Maneuver that he learned in scouts. He also loves coaching youth in soccer, basketball, and tennis. John enjoys a good workout and does marathons, triathlons, and Spartan obstacle course races. He once placed 51st out of 3999 contestants and 2nd in the 45-50 age category in a Spartan Super Race. He plays the piano and percussion/drums and has taught drum lessons. He has played in bands and once performed a drum set solo at the Venetian in Las Vegas for over a thousand people. He loves writing and composing music on the Clavinova and has composed several soft-pop songs. John loves to dance and will be seen on the dance floor at every work social or wedding reception. He loves to sing and do karaoke. John has worked many interesting jobs with his entrepreneurial spirit including the following: selling golf balls as a kid, washing dishes and prep cooking at Carol's Kitchen restaurant, building a house from foundation to finish work in high school construction, and peeling logs by hand. He worked for Mr. Mac, Matrix Marketing, Office Max, RGIS Inventory Specialists, Bell Janitorial sales, NFIB political lobby consulting, Buckeye International chemical sales management, and K-Designer remodeling. He once worked as a paid Girl Scouts instructor for high-risk girls in downtown Ogden. He was an EMT and a surgical tech and has assisted in a wide variety of surgeries. At WSU Disability Services, he assisted blind students. He is up for any challenge including wearing the Deranged Easter Bunny outfit for a company presentation in front of 500+ peers as well as wearing the same said outfit to a job interview at Kneader's restaurant. John is known for being fearless and is always up for a good adventure. He is known for his work ethic and is always willing to volunteer. John believes we should enjoy all the ups and downs in life, that pain is gain, and that integrity and service are paramount attributes to develop.https://www.johntaylor4utah.com/about
A two-week ceasefire is on — but it hinges on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, raising major questions about global oil flow and whether gas prices will actually drop. Joe Pags breaks down what this means for energy markets and asks if the messaging from the White House was strategic all along. Then, retired Air Force Combat Controller Eric Lionheart joins to give a detailed, boots-on-the-ground breakdown of the F-15E rescue mission — from CSAR operations to encrypted signals — and explains how a leak could have put a pilot's life in serious danger. How did America manage to rescue two airmen after their plane was shot down over Iran?In this bonus bank holiday episode, Venetia Rainey is joined by Jack Murphy, ex-US special forces who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, including as a Green Beret. He is now a journalist and military commentator and hosts The Team House national security podcast. He broke the story that the weapons systems officer (WSO) from the downed F-15E had been rescued alive after 36 hours stranded behind enemy lines.Jack provides a unique insight into the dramatic double rescue mission - already being described as the most complex in American military history. He explains the initial search and rescue (CSAR) efforts, what the WSO would have been doing to survive on the ground, and why the US abandoned and blew up two multimillion-dollar aircraft at a remote desert airstrip.Plus: what role is AI playing in the Iran war and beyond, in battlefields from Ukraine to Gaza? The US military increasingly relies on an AI decision support system called Maven to help with targeting, intelligence assessments and troop deployments. Israel and Ukraine use similar technology. Proponents of artificial intelligence argue it makes warfare faster and more efficient - giving the West a key battlefield advantage in a time of rising conflict. But critics say there are concerns over safety and low accuracy, and worry humans are increasingly being left out of the loop. Some of these concerns come from industry insiders such as AI company Anthropic, which is in a dispute with the Pentagon over the use of its system Claude for autonomous weapons. Venetia Rainey is joined by Adam Wishart, the filmmaker behind new Channel 4 documentary, Click to Kill: the AI War Machine, and Heidy Khlaaf, chief AI scientist at the AI Now Institute and previously at OpenAI. Enjoyed this episode or the podcast in general? Send me a text message:A single ejection over Iran turns into a 48-hour nightmare: one airman recovered fast, the other wedged into a mountain crevice while patrols sweep the ridgelines and a bounty spreads across the highlands. We walk through how that kind of isolation becomes a strategic crisis, not just a rescue problem, especially after years of assuming near-total aerial invulnerability. When a nation is hunting one person, every radio burst, every footstep, and every minute of daylight matters. We dig into the survival side of modern SEAR training, including the brutal tradeoff between staying silent and staying findable. Then we shift to the behind-the-scenes play that buys time, with a deception campaign that pushes enemy forces toward phantom targets. It's a reminder that combat search and rescue (CSAR) isn't one team doing one thing, it's intelligence, misdirection, timing, and aviation all interlocked under pressure. From there, the story goes technical and tactical. The MC-130J Commando and its Silent Knight terrain-following radar show what special operations aviation looks like in contested airspace: ultra-low flying, terrain masking, and a forward arming and refueling point deep in denied territory. On the ground, Guardian Angels and Air Force Pararescue (PJs) own the “last mile” with medical capability and small-unit tactics, while MQ-9 Reaper drones shape the battlespace overhead. And when the extraction plan breaks and aircraft bog down in desert sand, we confront the hardest decision of all: destroy sensitive technology with thermite or risk it falling into enemy hands. If you're into military aviation, special operations, electronic warfare, and the real-world cost of “leave no one behind,” this one delivers. S.O.S. (Stories of Service) - Ordinary people who do extraordinary work
Send us a textA Marine officer who helped open Pakistan's gateway to Afghanistan, coordinated CSAR basing, and carried the keys to a shuttered Kabul embassy steps into the studio to talk about combat, command, and the price of telling the truth. We walk through the early days after 9/11—commercial flights into Rawalpindi with a rucksack full of radios, late-night negotiations for overflight and basing, and the scramble to build humane, lawful processes as refugees surged and detainee operations strained capacity. Then we move to the mountains, where a lean battalion landing team rewrote SOPs, trained NCOs from scratch, welded armor onto Humvees, and led local militias with a blend of trust and hard boundaries. The outcomes were stark: historic enemy losses, zero fratricide, and a unit that fought for months on grit and discipline. What makes this story different isn't just the firefights—it's the candor about strategy and culture. We question whether invasion was the only path to bin Laden, explore how local networks and precise incentives could have achieved ends without buying the whole country, and detail the cost of confusing occupation with victory. We also pull back the curtain on headquarters-versus-field dynamics: pressure to bomb without positive ID, awards gaming, and media optics that overshadowed months of deprivation and risk. When investigations arrived over “harsh language,” the larger lesson became impossible to ignore: institutions often reward silence and punish truth, even when results in the field are undeniable. A practical field guide to moral courage—covering leadership under pressure, accountability, and hard-earned Afghanistan war lessons, with an unfiltered look at the ethics of command from someone who was there and believes we can do better. In this ‘Spotlight' episode of The Real ResQ Podcast, host Jason Quinn sits down with three key members of the BluedropUSA Training and Simulation team based out of Orlando, Florida. We had the unique opportunity to explore the cutting-edge work Bluedrop is doing to revolutionize helicopter rescue training through advanced virtual reality (VR) simulation technology. The team walks us through how they create immersive, real-world training scenarios by simulating a variety of scenes, weather conditions, aircraft, and equipment. These simulations are designed to provide aircrews with hands-on experience in realistic rescue operations. Throughout the episode, we dive into the system's impressive capabilities, which allow every member of an aircrew—from pilots to rescue specialists and aerial gunners—to participate in diverse scenarios. Whether it's search-and-rescue (SAR), combat search-and-rescue (CSAR), or aerial gunner training, Bluedrop's VR technology is reshaping the way teams prepare for critical missions. This conversation also connects with a recent article published in Vertical Valor's special Mega issue 2024, where Bluedrop's innovations are highlighted even further. Make sure to pick up a copy of the Mega issue, available at trade shows this fall 2024. Join us as we take a closer look at the future of helicopter rescue training. Enjoy!
