I've gotten to walk alongside several mentees as they started their first business, and I've never seen someone's first year be so stupendously successful and textbook as the one Kat Wellum-Kent just had. Kat had been in my world for several years when we embarked on mentoring as she was deciding whether or not to leave her corporate accountancy career to start her own business. Spoiler alert: she did, and it was awesome! And she did this with pretty challenging personal circumstances. In our conversation, we unpack her Year 1 experience - what worked, what could have gone better… and whether the reality of having her own business marries up to the vision she had for it. She also shares: The moment she knew she was going to go for it What most excited her about the prospect of having her own biz …And what terrified her! The very first 3 steps she took in starting How she navigated a start-up and solo parenting for 6 months Why sales isn't sales to her Her support team and how she decided who to hire and when What she did to conquer self-doubt and all the other start-up mindset blocks One thing she'd say to someone working in corporate who's thinking about starting their own business You can find out more about Kat's business at fractionalfinance.co.uk or on Instagram - @fractionalfinance. If you're thinking through baptism for yourself or your family check out this episode! We get into the controversial debate over the proper subjects of baptism. Dr. Steve Wellum from Southern Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky makes the case that baptism is only for men and women who make a credible profession of faith over and against the theology of Reformers like John Calvin and Martin Luther. We talk about the history and theological significance of baptism as well as the practical importance it holds as a discipleship tool. Reformed Baptists and Presbyterians both appreciate the role of the natural and spiritual family in raising Christians, but differ on the role baptism plays. Both traditions also recognize the significance of covenants as they play out through the Scriptures, but differ on the relationships between those covenants (covenant of grace, Abrahamic covenant, New Covenant etc…). We also discuss common objections to credobaptism or “believers-only” baptism. Delegates from throughout the ecumenical (universal or "catholic") church met in Chalcedon in 451 AD to address the emergence of certain heresies surrounding the person and nature of Christ. Some were teaching that Jesus merely took on the material aspects of a human body (Apollinarianism). Others so distinguished Jesus' humanity and divinity that they conceived of each as involving a distinct person (Nestorianism). Finally, some so emphasized Christ's unity that they spoke of his divinity blending with his humanity to form a new mixed nature (Eutychianism or Monophysitism). The Council of Chalcedon thus responded to these errors, producing a confession of orthodoxy known as The Chalcedonian Definition (or the Symbol of Chalcedon). It affirmed that the incarnate Christ is one person with both a human and divine nature. But why does this statement matter, and are its distinctions all that important? What, if anything, can we learn from it today? Dr. Stephen Wellum joins Kirk in this episode to discuss the meaning and significance of this important historical document.

How the 1970s energy crisis facilitated a neoliberal shift in US political culture. In Energizing Neoliberalism: The 1970s Energy Crisis and the Making of Modern America (Johns Hopkins UP, 2023), Caleb Wellum offers a provocative account of how the 1970s energy crisis helped to recreate postwar America. Rather than think of the crisis as the obvious outcome of the decade's "oil shocks," Wellum unpacks the cultural construction of a crisis of energy across different sectors of society, from presidents, policy experts, and environmentalists to filmmakers, economists, and oil futures traders. He shows how the dominant meanings ascribed to the 1970s energy crisis helped to energize neoliberal visions of renewed abundance and power through free market values and approaches to energy. Deeply researched in federal archives, expert discourse, and popular culture, Energizing Neoliberalism demonstrates the central role that energy crisis narratives played in America's neoliberal turn. Wellum traces the roots of the crisis to the consumption practices and cultural narratives spawned by the petrocultural politics of Cold War capitalism. In a series of illuminating case studies—including 1970s energy conservation debates, popular car films, and the creation of oil futures trading—Wellum chronicles the consolidation of a neoliberal capitalist order in the United States through an energy politics marked by anxious futurity, petro-populist sentiment, and financialized energy markets. He shows how experiences of energy shortages and fears of future energy crises unsettled American national identity and power yet also informed Reagan-era confidence in free markets and US global leadership. In taking a cultural approach to the 1970s energy crisis, Wellum offers a challenging meditation on the status of "crisis" in modern history, contemporary life, and critical thought and how we rely on crises to make sense of the world. Caleb Wellum is an assistant professor of US history at the University of Toronto, Mississauga. Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. As Christians, how should we understand the modern nation of Israel? And how does this understanding shape our view of the current conflict between Israel and Hamas?
Christ commands us to forgive as we have been forgiven, but does this mean we should forgive unconditionally? No. Like Christ, we should only forgive those who repent.
Jonathan Wellum joins us once more on the podcast to reflect on the economic year 2023, and to discuss ESG, ethical investing, and the worldview difference between a godly and ungodly approach to economics.
