Sometimes we like to listen to our favorites again. Please enjoy “A Mountain of Snow,” and we'll be back with a new story on Monday! Narrator: Male Story Begins: 4:12 A Mountain of Snow! Excerpt: Sidney loved to work in the snow, especially when it was freshly fallen. It was like playing in a pile of sugar all day long! Sidney loved how soft and fluffy snow could be, but he also loved how strong it could be when people built forts or figures out of snow. After a few minutes, Sidney's driver came out to the garage carrying a hot cup of coffee. The driver opened up the big garage door and took a seat in the driver's seat. Now they were ready to head out into the snow! Today's Meditation: Relax your whole body from head to toe in this meditation. Des moutons à l'ombre des panneaux solaires: en Australie, l'agrivoltaïsme a le vent en poupe

Reportage International

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 27, 2026 2:28

This week on The Devil's Ledger, we say farewell to the Winter Olympics — and to the Italian Alps, whose beauty, history, and lingering shadows reminded us that even the most breathtaking places tend to keep a few secrets. But while the games end, the stories across the network are just getting started. The Creepiest Thing I Heard This Week Nature delivered the reminder. In March of 1888, a storm known as The White Hurricane buried the Northeast under up to 50 inches of snow, with drifts rising to the height of buildings. Communication collapsed. Cities were cut off. More than 400 people died — many only steps from safety. The storm didn't just paralyze the region. It changed it. In response, New York began moving critical infrastructure underground — a decision that eventually led to the creation of the subway system. Sometimes the scariest stories aren't about monsters. They're about how quickly control disappears. On The Devil Within By listener request, we begin a two-part series on one of America's most enduring and unsettling legends: The Mothman West Virginia. The 1960s. Glowing red eyes. Massive wings. Dozens of witnesses. And a chilling pattern — sightings that seem to appear before tragedy. Folklore? Mass hysteria? Something unknown? Or a warning. On The Ides of April A new historical arc begins: Alexander the Great A young king who conquered the known world before the age of thirty — and may have outrun the limits of power itself. Empire. Ambition. Destiny. And the question history always asks: What happens when there's nothing left to conquer? On Taboo Treasures The guys return with a sharp and satirical look at one of humanity's stranger traditions: The most dangerous jobs we've ever created. From ancient hazards to modern risks, it's a darkly funny exploration of the ways people have risked their lives… for a paycheck. On Criminal Mischief Carolyn Ossorio brings updates on several major cases currently dominating the news, including developments involving Nancy Guthrie, Brendan Banfield, and other ongoing investigations. Because in true crime, the story rarely ends when the headlines move on. On Finding Me with Josh Wolf Josh continues his daily journey into the uncomfortable territory most of us try to avoid: Accountability. Honesty. And the work of figuring out what actually needs attention. Personal. Raw. Necessary. This Week in Horror For Gen X horror fans, this one feels personal. The seventh installment of the Scream franchise arrives in theaters. When a new Ghostface targets Sidney's daughter, she's forced to confront her past — and end the cycle of violence once and for all. Some franchises fade. Others grow up with us. And somehow… Ghostface is still calling. Closing Thought As this episode releases, a major winter storm is moving toward the Northeast. A reminder — like the storms of the past — that control is often temporary. If you're in its path: Slow down. Stay warm. Check on each other. We're thinking of you. Until next week… Stay curious. Stay careful. And stay safe out there.

Hello everyone!  We hope you enjoyed our new stories this week. Now, welcome to Favorite Friday! Sometimes we like to listen to our favorites again. Please enjoy “Sensitive Snapdragons,” and we'll be back with a new story on Monday! Narrator: Male Story Begins: 3:58 Sensitive Snapdragons Excerpt: Summer thought every morning was a beautiful morning. When it was sunny, she enjoyed the light and the warmth. When it was rainy, she enjoyed the refreshing water to drink, and when it was windy, Summer enjoyed the feel of the air as it circled her leaves and blossoms. The little yellow snapdragon always said the sun made her feel like dancing. The only time she didn't think mornings were beautiful was in the wintertime… and that was only because she was asleep in the ground! “It sure is a beautiful morning,” Sawyer replied, still smiling. “Say, I wonder if our friend Bert Bumblebee will visit us today,” Sawyer continued. “Bert usually visits us on sunny days, especially if it's not too windy.” Today's Meditation: Imagine you are a twinkling star, receiving and sending energy through the universe in today’s meditation. It's Baton Rouge: Out to Lunch

A little wartime history: In 1940, at the start of World War II, approximately 12 million women were working outside the household in the United States, comprising about 25% of the female population. That number rose significantly during the war to over 18 million by 1945, as the U.S. government encouraged women in posters and commercial advertising to volunteer for wartime service in factories. Inspired by a song by Redd Evans and John Jacob Loeb, Rosie the Riveter, the brawny brunette with a red, polka dotted headscarf, became an icon of the war and women’s movement. Today, women make up nearly half of the total U.S. labor force. And if, like me, you grew up with a mother who owned a small business, then you won’t be surprised at all that women make up nearly 45% of all businesses in the U.S., employing over 10.5 million workers and generating over $3.3 trillion in revenue. As an ad from the Sixties used to say, “You’ve come a long way, baby.” Sidney Coffee became a small business owner after decades of public service. Originally from Texas, Sidney came to Baton Rouge to attend college at LSU. She began her career in journalism at The Advocate, working on special sections, then moved to WBRZ Channel 2 as a news producer, creating morning and evening broadcasts. Sidney then pivoted to positions in public communications—first as Gov. Buddy Roemer’s press secretary, which then led to a position with the Lower Mississippi Delta Development Commission, chaired at the time by then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton. Recognizing her work in coastal policy, Govs. Mike Foster and Kathleen Blanco each tapped Sidney for positions during their administrations. For the last decade, Sidney has been the owner and operator of The Guru, an art gallery, spiritual retreat, and event venue, set inside a restored 1920s mechanic’s garage on Government Street. When we think about the factors that drive consumer purchases, convenience often tops the list, with 77% to 83% of consumers citing it as a key factor that influences, or sometimes dictates, their buying decisions. From fast food to five-minute oil changes, our modern lifestyles demand ease and immediacy. Anna Beth Guillory, has developed an app for busy professional women to book appointments directly with beauty professionals. It's called BeautyFindr. After nearly a decade of co-owning a blowout bar in Lake Charles, Anna Beth identified a persistent problem: connecting clients to available beauty professionals in real time. Working with a developer, Anna Beth spent 11 months building the BeautyFindr app, which launched in 2024. Today, BeautyFindr operates in 19 states and is quickly evolving into a business-development hub for beauty professionals, and, as well as scheduling, offers peer networking, social sharing and business-growth tools. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard. Every Christian holds a Bible, but few stop to ask why they trust the text in their hands. Questions about manuscripts, translators, editions, and revisions are often treated as technical matters best left to specialists. Yet they carry enormous implications: Is the Bible I hold the very word of God—truly infallible and inerrant? For the preservationist, the story of the English Bible is not one of constant loss and recovery, but of transmission, reception, and faithful use within the life of the church—giving believers confidence in what has been handed down.In this episode of the Postscript, I'm joined by Dr. Jim Alter, pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Sidney, Ohio, and co-founder of Ancient Baptist Press. Dr. Jim is also the founder, curator, and educator behind Purified Seven Times, a traveling exhibit that teaches the history of Bible translation into English with special attention to the preservation of God's word. Through pastoral ministry, publishing, and hands-on historical education, Dr. Jim helps Christians think carefully—and faithfully—about where their Bible came from and why that history still matters today.Visit https://www.gracebaptistsidney.com/exhibit to learn more about Purified Seven TimesVisit https://lfbi.org/learnmore

This week on Forgotten Cinema: Lead Up, the Mikes continue their road toward "Scream 7" with "Scream 3", the most divisive entry in the franchise.Coming off "Scream 2", the highest-reviewed film in the series, "Scream 3" holds the unfortunate distinction of being the worst reviewed. Mike Field still enjoys the movie, but it is his least favorite of the franchise so far. His biggest issue comes down to the killer reveal, which he finds underwhelming, especially when you factor in the original script, the late production change to a single killer, and the moments where you can clearly tell the film was staged for two Ghostfaces.Mike Butler also enjoys the film, especially the Gale & Dewey relationship, but shares some of those frustrations. He would have preferred the climax to stay within the Hollywood studio setting that the movie spends so much time establishing, rather than shifting to a Scooby-Doo-style mansion. He also argues that Patrick Dempsey being revealed as the killer and Sidney's half-brother would have made far more sense both narratively and thematically.Despite its flaws, "Scream 3" is still a fun watch. The kills are inventive, the meta elements continue to evolve, and Parker Posey is a standout as the actress portraying Gale Weathers in the Stab films within the film. It may be messy and compromised, but it still understands the spirit of the franchise and delivers plenty to enjoy. So join the Mikes as the go through each film in the "Scream" saga leading up to the release of "Scream 7".Are you sad we never got to see a full episode of "100% Cotton"? With over a dozen dreamy indoor and outdoor wedding venues, it’s no wonder this lakeside gem has been the backdrop for countless “I do’s.” And this year? Valentine’s Day lands on a Saturday, making it the perfect excuse for a romantic escape. For couples looking to make a weekend of it, the resort’s Valentine’s Romantic Getaway has all the swoon-worthy details: champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries, cozy accommodations, a multi-course dinner at Sidney’s overlooking the lake, and breakfast the next morning. Want more? There’s spa treatments, snow fun at Margaritaville, or even a game day at Game Changer. Planning to pop the question? The resort’s wedding consultants can help you nail the moment, from finding the perfect spot to booking a photographer. Love is definitely in the air at Lanier Islands. STORY 2: Amid walkouts, GCPS affirms students’ right to expression, reminds them to follow rules Students across Gwinnett County are walking out of class, protesting immigration enforcement and the fear it’s brought into their schools. The district is trying to balance it all—supporting students’ voices while keeping things safe and orderly. The protests come as frustration grows nationwide over ICE’s actions, including the deaths of two U.S. citizens. Some students say they’re scared to even show up to school. The district reiterated its policy: ICE can’t enter non-public areas of schools without a judge-signed warrant. But fear lingers. Enrollment has dropped by thousands since ICE activity ramped up in 2025, according to the Gwinnett County Association of Educators. For now, GCPS is working with students to keep protests peaceful and on-campus. STORY 3: Scott McCray’s lasting impact on downtown Lawrenceville When Scott McCray first set his sights on expanding his restaurant footprint, downtown Lawrenceville wasn’t exactly buzzing. “It was quiet—really quiet,” he said. “Not much going on, but I saw potential.” That was back in the early 2000s, when the corner spot he wanted—a beat-up old drugstore—wasn’t even available. So, he waited. By 2006, McCray’s Tavern opened on Perry Street, and two decades later, it’s a cornerstone of Lawrenceville’s now-vibrant Square. Today, McCray owns nine restaurants, including Perry Street Chophouse and several McCray’s Taverns across metro Atlanta. But he’s not done yet. “We’ve got another building on the Square,” he teased. “Still figuring out what to do with it, but we’re working on something.” And then there’s St. Patrick’s Day—his annual “Perry Street festival” that shuts down the street, packs the rooftop deck, and unofficially kicks off spring. Reflecting on 20 years in the business, McCray still seems a little surprised. “I didn’t grow up dreaming about restaurants,” he said. “But once I opened my first place, I knew. It’s hard work, but I still love it. Every day.” We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. In fact, her journey started far from a classroom—in a doctor’s office in Nassau, Bahamas, where she worked as a physician. But life has a funny way of rerouting us. Fifteen years ago, she moved to the U.S. with her husband and began the long, grueling process of earning her medical license here. To make ends meet, she started substitute teaching. “I thought it’d just be temporary,” she said. “But when I walked into GIVE Center East, something clicked. I knew—this is where I’m supposed to be.” Fast forward to now: Richardson, who’s been teaching biology at GIVE for four years, was just named Gwinnett County Public Schools’ 2027 Teacher of the Year. It’s a rare honor for a teacher at an alternative school, and Richardson doesn’t take it lightly. At GIVE, Richardson works with students who’ve been written off by others. “These kids have been told they’re failures, that one mistake defines them,” she said. “But I believe in second chances. I want them to see they’re worth more than their worst moment.” Richardson’s passion for her students shines through in everything she does, from creating hands-on biology lessons to building relationships that show her students they’re valued. STORY 5: Republican state House leaders unveil plan to abolish homeowner property taxes Georgia Republicans are making a bold promise: no more property taxes for homeowners by 2032. Sounds great, right? But the details? Well, they’re complicated. House Speaker Jon Burns unveiled the plan Wednesday, calling it “historic tax relief” aimed at easing the financial strain on homeowners. Rising home values, he said, have made the current system “unsustainable.” The idea is to gradually phase out property taxes on primary residences, but here’s the catch—local governments rely on that money. A lot of it. Property taxes fund schools, police, fire departments—you name it. So, what happens when that revenue disappears? Burns’ plan would let cities and counties make up the difference by raising sales taxes or adding fees for specific services. But sales taxes are unpredictable, especially during economic downturns, and some areas might struggle to generate enough revenue. And then there’s the political hurdle. To make this happen, lawmakers need a constitutional amendment, which requires two-thirds approval in both chambers and a public vote. Oh, and the Senate? They’re focused on slashing income taxes instead. For now, the House hasn’t released all the details, but one thing’s clear: this proposal is ambitious—and it’s going to spark a lot of debate. We’ll be right back. Break 3: GCPL Passport STORY 6: TenMed Wound Care opening Lawrenceville office TenMed Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine is bringing its expertise to Lawrenceville, opening a new clinic at 696 Grayson Highway. For patients in Gwinnett County dealing with stubborn wounds—diabetic foot ulcers, surgical wounds, or other complex injuries—this is big news. The Lawrenceville location joins TenMed’s existing offices in Atlanta and Johns Creek, expanding access to advanced treatments like Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Dr. Joshua Behlmann, the clinic’s medical director, said he’s excited to serve the community. “Our goal is simple: to provide life-changing care for those who need it most.” From personalized wound care plans to cutting-edge therapies, the clinic is ready to help. STORY 7: Test-run of outdoor classrooms in Georgia schools clears General Assembly Georgia students might soon trade desks for fresh air, thanks to a new outdoor learning pilot program. On Wednesday, the state Senate gave unanimous approval to a bill that would create outdoor classrooms at select K-8 schools. Next stop? Governor Kemp’s desk. State Sen. Bo Hatchett shared his own experience: “I had an outdoor classroom at North Habersham Middle, and it made a huge difference. Every kid should have that chance.” Sen. Sheikh Rahman added, “Kids are glued to screens. Getting them outside? It’s good for their bodies, their minds—everything.” The program will run for three years before lawmakers decide what’s next.
