The guys are back after the holiday break and right off the top there's major controversy. Is Team Chicago the #1 trivia team? Is there a reason to celebrate our accomplishments? The answer is yes, and anyone who says otherwise is lying. Afterwards we get into Bulls, Drake LaRoche and how to make college football significantly better. All Gas No Brakes.
James McCann is signing with the Mets, Dave Dombrowski will helm the Phillies, Lance Lynn is headed to Chicago, and, of course, Cleveland announced that it plans to change its team name (in the near future). We recap the week in baseball news (1:45), including the White Sox re-signing Adam Eaton, which leads us down a rabbit hole with Dan Hayes of The Athletic, who reported on the mysterious and downright bizarre Drake LaRoche controversy the last time Eaton donned a White Sox uniform (43:52). Hosts: Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman Guest: Dan Hayes and Michael Baumann
Matthew and Toby are live from Boston’s Fenway Park—well, at least to start the episode. Audio issues forced a scrapping of the bulk of the recording. (Imagine a conference call with people in a wind storm. It’s like that, except instead of wind, it’s Boston fans yelling and two people who don’t really know how to use their travel recorder.) Luckily, for Battery Mates Nation, the boys picked the ball up two weeks later to finish the episode: recapping the Fenway visit, discussing the state of their teams, and providing an exciting/bizarre update in the exciting/bizarre saga of Drake LaRoche. Lastly, a research project for everyone: Which team does each presidential candidate root for? Sure, policies matter, and the debates are important. But this a fundamental measure of character.
Adam Eaton and Todd Frazier might not be with the White Sox anymore, but their feud in 2016 helped pave the way for the White Sox rebuild and why the franchise is where it is today. Chuck Garfien, Ryan McGuffey and Chris Kamka go over the events of that crazy, fateful 2016 season that caused the White Sox to eventually trade Chris Sale, Jose Quintana, Eaton, Frazier and many others (1:10). It started with the Adam and Drake LaRoche saga during spring training (2:40) and the dysfunction that occurred after that (07:00). How and why things unraveled after their 23-10 start and the fight in the clubhouse between Eaton and Frazier (13:00). The problems continued with Chris Sale cutting up the throwback jerseys and remains alive today with the latest fighting words on the field and in the press between Eaton and Frazier (17:20). Buckle up for this one.
Andy's back thanks to the Lazarus Pit, Drake LaRoche is an Infinity Stone, Yadier Molina needs a new set of crown jewels... Baseball is weird, man.
Sean & Joey review a banner week for the Woke Off, as a new contender takes the top spot and the Players Tribune becomes as political as Teen Vogue. We also speculate about the Chicago Bulls' human resources department, review Basketball Reference nicknames, mourn the decline of The Tall Baller From The G, lecture Enes Kanter about gender fluidity, nominate Drake LaRoche for a front office job, warn the Sacramento Kings about Skynet, evaluate Danilo Gallinari's sex injury, and suggest that the Cleveland Cavaliers are pawns in a long string of subway hoaxes perpetrated by the mysterious Zardulu. Matthew and Toby have a lot of catching up to do, after three momentous weeks in baseball and in life. Battery Mates Nation (now at least one tiny person larger) is treated to healthy portions of: the details surrounding MLB’s new Collective Bargaining Agreement; the biggest player transactions from last week's Winter Meetings; and a fascinating conversation with Alex Freedman, the voice of the Oklahoma City Dodgers. And the boys briefly forget Drake LaRoche’s name.
Chicago Sun-Times’ Patrick Finley, Chicago Tribune’s Chris Kuc and Mark Grote from the Cubs Radio Network join Kap. Kevin White goes on injured reserve with another leg injury. Was this a bad draft pick by the Bears? Jay Cutler misses practice again. Will Brian Hoyer start for a third-straight week? USA Today’s Bob Nightengale previews the N.L. Wild Card game and sizes up the Cubs playoff chances. Plus, the panel tries to figure out why Buck Showalter did not use Zach Britton in the A.L. Wild Card game and they react to Adam and Drake LaRoche throwing out the first pitch before a Nationals NLDS game.
Episode 128 – Make Baseball Fun Again The latest episode of “Field of Streams” is live!
