Episode 170 of Tablesetters is LIVE! We open with Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association officially beginning negotiations on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, including MLB's proposal for a hard salary cap and salary floor, the union's immediate opposition, and what this means for the future of player salaries, competitive balance, and the possibility of another labor showdown. From there, we dive into one of the wildest opening weekends of the NCAA Tournament in recent memory. No. 1 overall seed UCLA, No. 2 Georgia Tech, Florida State, Florida, and Arkansas were all eliminated before Super Regionals. We break down Georgia and North Carolina emerging as the new favorites, Oklahoma stunning Georgia Tech, Kansas taking down Arkansas twice, Troy eliminating Florida, St. John's shocking Florida State, and preview every Super Regional matchup on the road to Omaha. We also discuss growing concern surrounding Aaron Judge's rib and shoulder injury situation after additional testing was ordered, Shohei Ohtani lowering his ERA to 0.74 with six scoreless innings while reaching base five times, and Cristopher Sánchez's historic 50 2/3-inning scoreless streak coming to an end after setting both a Phillies franchise record and the longest scoreless streak ever by a left-handed pitcher. Plus, why Corbin Carroll is putting up the best left-on-left numbers since Barry Bonds, Max Meyer's long-awaited breakout season with the Marlins, Statcast's unluckiest hitters, Jeff Passan's case for the Braves to pursue Tarik Skubal, Sub-2 ERA Crew updates, red-hot and ice-cold players of the week, polls, debates, and everything else happening across Major League Baseball.

Is it possible for a coach to say too much and for a suspension to be too little? These are the questions Farwell and Dan are wrestling with this week as the league office makes news for a hefty fine and a not-so-hefty suspension. We're sure you have thoughts, so don't forget to email us at ohlpodcast(at)rogers.com. Then there's that new Collective Bargaining Agreement in the NHL and its potential impact on the OHL and its top-end older players. Is the ice under the OHL getting even thinner? It wouldn't be the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs if the guys weren't making (not so) bold predictions for every series. Ignition switch: From sparking lineups with 'Leadoff Man' author to thawing a chilly Hot Stove

A discussion the Cardinals and a chilly Hot Stove eventually ignites with this completely unrelated question: How far into your list of the best players in the history of Major League Baseball do you get before mentioning Rickey Henderson? He's the all-time leader in runs, he's the greatest leadoff hitter in the game's history, and he almost lapped everyone but Lou Brock when it comes to career stolen bases.  The name of the game is scoring runs, and few (if any) did it better than Henderson. That's part of the discussion with Matt Snyder, CBS sports writer and author of the new book, "The Leadoff Man: The history of, the evolution of, and fun with the greatest catalyst in sports." (The book is available here.) In his book, Snyder chronicles the changing nature of the leadoff spot, from the speedy contact hitters of yore to the bashers and mashers of the modern game, from the tradition of putting infielder there regardless of their ability to get on base to the analytics of prioritizing the most at-bats for the player who makes the fewest outs. Henderson leads the way with a style of play that was both ahead of his peers and ahead of its time. At about the 23-minute mark, the conversation speeds from leading men to discussing the current offseason and the Cardinals' willingness to trade their leadoff man, Brendan Donovan. The Hot Stove has been sluggish, even stagnant. And that prompts an impromptu suggestion for how to spur deals during the winter meetings with tools already present in the current Collective Bargaining Agreement. No cap needed. Although talk about a cap is going to dominate the next 11 months, and that is where the podcast hurries toward its conclusion by describing how it's not the tycoon-like Dodgers that signal the lack of competitive balance and economic concerns about the game. The Cardinals could be the canary. To which, Snyder flips the question: How deep into a list of the most recognizable baseball teams does one get before naming the Cardinals? There is no bumper sticker, no buzzy campaign slogan that captures the challenge facing Major League Baseball and its 30 clubs as economic disparity grows and the expiration of the Collective Bargaining Agreement arrives. A complex issue requires a complex solution. Or does it? A brief conversation about the Cardinals' spending strategy and past history with free agency, based on research done for The Write Fielder newsletter, spirals into a much larger debate between Best Podcast in Baseball host Derrick Goold and guest Kevin Wheeler, of KMOX/104.1 FM. After detailing how the Cardinals got into their current predicament, the questions that follow are two-fold: Do the Cardinals need to change their approach to free agency to return to contention, and does MLB need to change its economic structure for the Cardinals to have a new approach to free agency. The debate ignites from there. Wheeler makes a compelling case for how the Cardinals needed to "swim in deeper waters" for free agency and a more conservative approach caught up with them. He adds that a team now focused on development needs to produce its own stars. Goold counters by wondering what World Series contenders have developed their star and not had to outfit the roster with free-agent moves to complete the championship-caliber roster. The Yankees may have Aaron Judge, and they used prospects to trade for Juan Soto once, but they also signed Gerrit Cole. The Kansas City Royals have a homegrown, bona fide star in Bobby Witt Jr. But what's next? That's where the economics of the game enter the conversation and Wheeler's stance that the "big boys" need to play ball for the betterment of the game, and if that means taking less or receiving a smaller cut to spur and require the spending of the smaller markets so be it. Goold makes a suggestion for pulling that off that Wheeler contends would be difficult to sell to fans who what the tangible bumper sticker, not the boring details of how it gets done. Eventually they agree on one. It's the TV deal. Wheeler's arguments that hinge on a comparison to the NBA and its salary cap format require there to be a much larger national TV deal, one closer to what the NBA has. And that is the crux of this. Once that's in place then negotiations about a salarly floor, shared revenue, and an international draft to better balance talent coming from abroad are all more tangible because the largest issue -- the growing gulch between teams -- has been bridged. In its 13th season as one of the first and most widely heard podcasts on baseball and the Cardinals, the Best Podcast in Baseball has reached a new season-high with 30 episodes. Each episode is sponsored weekly by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and lead baseball writer Derrick Goold.

“I'm never out here trying to prove to others who I am. I'm out here proving to myself that I'm exactly who I said I am.” Natasha Cloud WNBA Champion   Pivot Family, We have had a lot of great conversations but this one is up there as one of our favorites because it's so personal, covering so many life aspects we don't talk about often and truly reveals the inner character of a remarkable woman who stands on strength and is fueled by passion and purpose. Ryan, Fred and Channing sit with former WNBA champion and Connecticut Sun point guard Natasha Cloud. Cloud, joins the guys for an emotional and powerful conversation about her journey through basketball, identity, social justice advocacy, and the fight for equality in women's sports. Through her battle scars and experiences, we get to know the real side of this strong woman who found her voice at a young age and has never hid from who she is to use it.    Growing up biracial, in a predominantly white household and community, Cloud reflects on feeling like she existed in a “gray area”…never feeling fully white, never feeling fully black and how that shaped her outlook. Shedding some tears, she shares how much her parents mean to her and how they embraced her wholeheartedly even though it wasn't always easy times. Cloud opens up about her self discovery to understanding her Blackness, the difficult conversations that came with it, and how her white parents made a constant effort to support her experience as a Black woman.   Energized and excited about the success and competition of playing in the Unrivaled league- Cloud is now gearing up for their next battle as she is at the forefront of the WNBA's fight for better pay, benefits, and respect. She speaks passionately about the upcoming Collective Bargaining Agreement, the need for pensions, and the growing investment in women's basketball. She also discusses this past WNBA season with the increased viewership and doesn't shy away from speaking on aggressive play being criticized as something other than basketball.    Candid about her personal relationship with fellow WNBA player Isabelle Harrison, Cloud takes us through the challenges of being a Black gay woman, and how she struggled to reconcile her faith with her identity while balancing societal pressures and criticism. By overcoming constant battles, Cloud finds strength in embracing who she is through thick and thin and never lets what others think be of influence.    The guys talk about Cloud skipping the 2020 WNBA season to focus on social justice, the burden of constantly speaking out on important issues, and how she's learned the importance of self-care, acknowledging that while she wants to fight for change, she also understands that she can't pour from an empty cup.   This episode is about courage, resilience, and standing firm in who you are. Natasha Cloud's story is a beautiful one of pride, courage, love, family and proof that playing basketball is bigger than sports. Finding purpose in using her platform for change, she's a proven leader, and willing to stand on the shoulders of those who came before her to leave the game and world better for future generations of young women.  Learn more about your ad choices.
