A recap of Week 1 in High School Football and a preview of Week 2. Chris Sale makes a rehab start with the Columbus Clingstones. Week 0 preview in College Football and I look back at the 1987 NBA Draft.
While rehabbing from a fractured rib, Cy Young winning pitcher Chris Sale joins the show to hang out with Jeff, Britt, and Brad and talk a little baseball, youth sports, and parenting. We've talked many times about how kids may be late bloomers in sports and Chris is a great example of that. Throughout youth and high school, no one expected Chris to be a big leaguer, though he loved baseball, as well as other sports, and had great support from his parents and coaches. As a skinny left-hander, Chris topped out around 87-88 mph in high school and didn't land a Division 1 scholarship. Instead, Chris pitched at Florida Gulf Coast University, where he had an average first two years. The summer before his junior year was a pivotal time for Chris and he shares all about what happened that led to his prolific big-league career. Chris also talks about arm care for young pitchers, when to begin throwing curveballs, his sports-parenting approach with his three boys, and much more. Plenty of great insights from Chris for kids, parents, and coaches.

The Atlanta Braves have suddenly started scoring runs. The result has been a run of success and their longest winning streak of the season. Grant McAuley discusses some of the reasons why the Braves are finding some late-season success. There is no hotter hitter in the National League than Michael Harris II, but just how good has he been? On the flip side, while some young arms are making an impression, Spencer Strider is struggling to find consistency. What exactly is going wrong for the former MLB strikeout leader, and can it be fixed? All of that plus the return of Ronald Acuña Jr. and why he should be playing, and injury updates on Chris Sale and Austin Riley. This week's special interviews include a visit with Stephen Tolbert of Hammer Territory to dissect the seasons of Harris and Strider as well as the big winter to come. You'll also hear a conversation with former Braves outfielder Ryan Klesko, who reflects on the 1995 World Series championship. The Atlanta Braves find themselves in yet another tailspin after being swept at home by the Baltimore Orioles, but this bender might just spell the end of their hopes of turning their season around with ample time to dig out of the hole they find themselves in. Grant McAuley discusses yet another challenging week as the series losses are once again piling up for the Braves. Not only are the losses mounting on the field, but Spencer Schwellenbach followed Chris Sale to the 60-day injured list, leaving Atlanta devoid of enough capable starters to field a rotation -- something that had been a strength for the club. Add that to the continued offensive struggles and the Braves are once again sinking in the standings and unable to put together enough offense to win consistently. Nick Green of FanDuel Sports joins the show to discuss the woes of the Atlanta lineup, how it went from one of the best in baseball to one of the worst in under two years, whether or not a new hitting coach with a new message and new philosophy was the right call, and what, if anything the club can do to once again reach its potential. (28:19). We'll also take a trip around the big leagues for some history making moments from the week that was for Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh and Dodgers great Clayton Kershaw, run down the National and American League rosters for the All-Star Game, and have a visit with Melanie Newman of the Baltimore broadcast team (57:38). The future Hall of Famer entered the night three strikeouts away from the milestone, and he reached the plateau in front of his family and the Los Angeles Dodgers' faithful fans.Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman discuss the historical significance of this achievement by Kershaw and why it always felt inevitable that he would reach the mark. They also debate whether Gerrit Cole, Chris Sale or any other active starter might ever reach 3,000 strikeouts or if this could be the last time we see it happen in the game. Also on this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake and Jordan react to the starting lineups for the American and National League All-Star teams, discuss the New York Yankees' continued struggles that now see them tied atop the AL East with the Toronto Blue Jays and answer some of your mailbag questions. Braves insider Grant McAuley joins Andy and Randy to discuss the Braves' return of Jurickson Profar, and why Didier Fuentes is still part of the plan.
The Atlanta Braves passed the mathematical halfway point over the weekend, but it was in the midst of yet another winnable series slipping through their collective fingers. Grant McAuley discusses the biggest stories and headlines from the week that was for the Braves, a week that saw them lose the momentum they'd worked so hard to build with head-to-head success against the formerly first place New York Mets by losing series to the Miami Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies. The offensive woes continue to plague the club, while both the starting rotation and bullpen are under more stress than ever to keep the Braves in games. Now seven games under .500 and staring at major deficits in both the division and Wild Card races, the Braves will attempt to make the most of their final two weeks before the All-Star break as they face the Los Angeles Angles, Baltimore Orioles, Athletics, and St. Louis Cardinals over the next 12 games. That stretch could ultimately determine what Atlanta's strategy will be for the trade deadline, because failing to win consistently may mean there's no point in bringing in reinforcements this season. Brad Rowland of Hammer Territory joins the show to discuss the Braves at the halfway marker, the loss of Chris Sale, the lost seasons thus far for Michael Harris and Ozzie Albies, and what needs to happen in July to allow Atlanta to pull the nose up on its season. Hear that discussion beginning at 29:20. In the trip around the big leagues, we cover the loss of Dave Parker, the field for the Home Run Derby, Ketel Marte's unfortunate trip to Chicago, and hear the voice of the Pitchcom device courtesy of SNY. And Sam Blum of The Athletic joins to preview the Angels and Braves series that begins on Tuesday. Hear that at 57:58.
