In this episode, I dive into what truly separates exceptional health and wellness practitioners from the crowd and why a certification or degree alone won't make you irreplaceable. What We Cover: Why the wellness industry is crowded, but there's still room for everyone to succeed The difference between being qualified and being exceptional Why credentials get you in the door, but character and delivery keep you there Staying in your lane: knowing what you're legally and ethically able to do (and building a strong referral network) Why teaching frameworks beats teaching facts The power of pattern recognition and experience in spotting what others miss Why your marketing should amplify your results, not replace them How to get clients even without a polished brand (get out there, get visible, get scrappy) Why reputation is built in a thousand small moments, not one big one How AI is changing the industry Building community vs. running a transactional business What it really takes to become a "unicorn" in your field: curiosity, humility, and caring more than everyone else Let's dive in! Cian (Riffs/Vocals) & Emmett (Bass) of Bucket talk to Letty Sharp of The Metal Cell podcast before their show supporting Knocked Loose at a sold out The Academy in Dublin June 23rd 2026. Bucket are one of the most exciting bands to emerge from the Dublin underground in recent years. They sit at the crossroads of punk, noise rock, hardcore and industrial intensity rather than traditional metal. Think of them as existing in the same broad ecosystem that produced bands like Gilla Band, but with a younger, more abrasive DIY energy. Mosaic was released on 29 April 2026 via A Baker's Dozen and is the follow-up to their debut EP Muck (2025). It contains five tracks and represents a significant evolution in their sound, incorporating more electronic textures, breakbeat influences and ambitious song structures while retaining the band's trademark noise-rock intensity. Immigration lawyer Joseph Patrick Murphy joins the show to talk with Marty about the case.
The salient focus of today's discourse revolves around the insights gleaned from a survey of approximately three dozen prominent executives within the furniture industry, addressing the imperative actions they deem necessary for the remainder of 2026. Notably, these leaders have eschewed the inclination to attribute their challenges to external economic factors, such as fluctuating interest rates or a decline in consumer interest, instead converging on three critical themes: the application of artificial intelligence to enhance operational efficiency, the empowerment of sales personnel, and the optimization of inventory management. This episode further delves into the troubling statistics revealing that the furniture sector remains the sole retail category in decline, juxtaposed against a backdrop of overall retail growth. Our discussion will also encompass the evolving consumer behavior, particularly among younger demographics, who exhibit a propensity to furnish their homes with secondhand items, thus postponing their engagement with the new furniture market. We aim to elucidate the significance of these findings and their implications for strategic decision-making within the industry. In a climate characterized by economic uncertainty and shifting consumer behaviors, the furniture industry stands at a critical juncture that necessitates introspection and strategic maneuvering. The episode presents a synthesis of insights derived from a survey of thirty-six leading executives within the industry, tasked with articulating their operational priorities for the latter half of 2026. The responses illuminate a stark deviation from the anticipated fixation on macroeconomic variables, as these leaders collectively redirect the focus towards three salient themes: the implementation of artificial intelligence in operational workflows, the enhancement of sales associate capabilities, and the optimization of inventory management for retail partners. The discussion surrounding artificial intelligence is particularly noteworthy, as it reveals a transformative vision for its application beyond customer-facing roles. Executives articulated a strategy to leverage AI technologies to streamline critical backend functions, including order processing, logistics, and customer service optimization. This perspective underscores a commitment to operational excellence, wherein AI is viewed not merely as a cost-cutting mechanism but as a vital enabler of enhanced efficiency and responsiveness. Moreover, the executives conveyed a clear message that the intention behind these initiatives is not to supplant the workforce but rather to augment human potential, thereby fostering an environment where employees are empowered to excel. Alongside technological integration, the episode emphasizes the imperative of investing in human capital through robust training initiatives for sales associates. A recurrent theme in the executives' responses is the acknowledged gap in sales effectiveness, which they attribute to insufficient training and support for retail staff. By advocating for comprehensive training programs that equip employees with the skills to effectively communicate the value of higher-end products, the industry leaders signal a strategic pivot towards customer engagement as a mechanism for driving sales growth. As the episode concludes, it juxtaposes these proactive strategies against a backdrop of disappointing sales figures, noting that the furniture sector is uniquely positioned in a declining trajectory within the broader retail landscape. This narrative arc reinforces the urgent necessity for the discussed strategies, positing them as critical pathways towards revitalizing the industry amidst prevailing challenges.Takeaways:The current landscape of the furniture industry reveals a significant shift in executive priorities, emphasizing operational efficiency and sales training over external economic factors.Notably, the executives surveyed did not express concerns regarding interest rates or housing markets, indicating a proactive approach to challenges faced within the industry.Three principal themes emerged from discussions with industry leaders: leveraging artificial intelligence for operational improvements, enhancing sales floor training, and optimizing inventory management practices.A concerning trend is reflected in new government data, which indicates that furniture sales have declined, marking the sector as the only retail category in a negative growth position. There exists a discernible gap on sales floors, as industry vendors are increasingly willing to invest in training programs to empower associates and enhance consumer engagement with higher-end products. The competitive landscape underscores the necessity for independent retailers to enhance their visibility in the digital marketplace to combat the dominance of national chains in consumer search results.

Book Club Podcast: What lesser-known treasures do Yarn Barn fiber artists love to share? Susan and Melissa share some of their favorites in weaving, spinning, and knitting. Liz Gipson drops by to talk about one of her books that Susan and Melissa adore. Book-loving crafters generally have a few special titles tucked on the shelf between the major must-have references: a self-published monograph, a slim paperback, or an in-depth look at an esoteric technique. In this episode, Susan Bateman and Melissa Parsons return with more hidden gems from the shelves at Yarn Barn of Kansas. Special guest Liz Gipson also joined us to talk about her own book on choosing yarn. Multishaft Weaving Weaving Designs by Bertha Gray Hayes: Miniature Overshot Patterns by Norma Smayda, Gretchen White, Jody Brown, and Katharine Schelleng This delightful collection of overshot patterns are refreshingly short-repeat and often asymmetrical, a playful and inspiring way to experiment with a traditional structure. Melissa's so enthusiastic about the book that she loves to introduce it to any weaver. Krokbragd: How to Design & Weave by Debbie Greenlaw Friendly and accessible, this introduction to the colorful Scandinavian weft-faced structure covers both rigid-heddle and multishaft looms. The book includes several projects, including an irresistibly cute farm sampler. Krokbragd: Contemporary Weaving with Colour by Angie Parker A more technical take on krokbragd, this is aimed at weavers who already have some experience under their belt, with a more contemporary design sensibility and beautiful photography throughout. M's + O's: A Contemporary Look at a Traditional Weave Structure on 4-shafts by Suzi Ballenger This brand-new 70-page monograph invites weavers to take a fresh look at an underexplored structure. Ballenger's examples and designs show M's and O's with contemporary style and unexpected laciness. Although M's and O's isn't generally Melissa's favorite structure, this book inspires her to take another look. Inkle & Tablet Weaving In Celebration of Plain Weave by Annie MacHale With a color theory explanation specifically for inkle weaving and information on designing beautiful bands, this spiral-bound color study is a must for bandweavers even before you get to the 200 pattern charts. Melissa and Susan especially love MacHale's asymmetrical designs. Please Weave a Message by Linda Hendrickson An entire book of graphed-out alphabets for tablet weaving, using as few as 24 to 52 cards, perfect for weaving a name or message into a keepsake band—especially good for handwoven gifts! Rigid Heddle Textures and Patterns for the Rigid Heddle Loom by Betty Davenport Decades ahead of its time and now in its eleventh printing, this book walks rigid-heddle weavers through pickup, deflected weft, and other structures well beyond plain weave. A Weaver's Guide to Yarn by Liz Gipson Teacher Liz Gipson gathered her thoughts on yarns into a practical framework for choosing your materials by need rather than guesswork, including a fiber checklist and a helpful “decoding yarn information” section. Written especially for rigid-heddle weavers, this is a book Melissa would hand to every beginning weaver. A special guest this episode, Liz joined the conversation to talk about how reader questions and teaching experience helped her write the book that weavers need. Finishing Finishes in the Ethnic Tradition by Suzanne Baizerman and Karen Searle Rescued from out of print, this illustrated guide goes far past the overhand knot, gathering fringe, wrapped-edge, and embellishment techniques from weaving traditions worldwide. Knitting Barbara Walker's Treasury Series (A Treasury of Knitting Patterns, A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns, Charted Knitting Designs: A Third Treasury, and A Fourth Treasury of Knitting Patterns) Full of ideas to design and customize plain knitting projects, Barbara Walker's iconoc treasuries give knitters permission to create. These four hefty stitch dictionaries include hundreds of charted designs you can drop into a project of your choosing. The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns by Ann Budd Written to pair perfectly with a stitch dictionary, this book turns "I love this yarn but have no pattern for it" into a finished sweater, sock, or hat. Ann Budd offers designs for gauges from 3 to 7 stitches per inch and child to adult sizes. Reversible Knitting by Cecelia Campochiaro A stitch dictionary where every pattern looks as good from the back as the front! This collection of motifs is ideal for scarves, blankets, and anything meant to be seen from both sides. The Wonder of Wool: A Knitter's Guide to Pure Breed Sheep by Justine Lee and Jess Morency Dramatic black-and-white sheep portraits pair with breed-by-breed spinning and knitting notes in this exploration of British heritage wools. The book also includes full patterns built around specific wools. Spinning A Spinner's Dozen: 14 Darn Useful Tools by Stephenie Gaustad A charming hand-illustrated case for the spinning tools worth hunting down in antique stores, this is Stephenie Gaustad's fun and gentle nudge to explore the old spinning ways and discover how the right tool buys you more time for the parts of spinning you actually love. Listen to the Wool: A Why-to Guide for Joyful Spinning by Josefin Waltin Less a technical manual than an invitation to slow down, this book encourages readers to embrace your mistakes as markers on your craft journey. It might make you a better spinner—even if you don't change your yarn after reading. Listen to our chat and tell us: What are your favorite craft books that more people should know about? Some coaches collect plays. Coach Shawn Cooley collects ways to run the same one.In his third visit to the Board Drill, the East Ridge offensive coordinator makes the case that you do not need a thick call sheet to be multiple. You need one play your kids believe in and a hundred ways to show it. For Cooley, that play is counter, and over the course of the episode he takes GH counter from its plainest form all the way out to the edges of what a defense will let you get away with.Along the way he gets into GT and split-flow counter, a first-level slice RPO he calls emo, counter quick borrowed off the college game, and a long-trap ISO wrinkle he is half convinced should have gotten him fired. From there it turns into a quarterback run clinic: a center-turned-quarterback lowering his shoulder between the tackles, jet and empty-formation keeps, a guard-tailback counter, and a shovel pass he simply calls Tebow. The thread running through all of it is the part most offenses skip. The offensive line barely changes a rule, and the defense never gets to tee off on your base.If you run gap scheme, this is an hour well spent with the whiteboard open. This is a public episode. Believe it or not, CJ has been doing the Dangerous History Podcast for 12 years now! Despite many trials & tribulations that have caused him to be slowed down or even knocked down, he has always staggered back up to his feet, wiped the blood out of his eyes, and resumed fighting the good fight of spreading brushfires of freedom via historical samizdat; and, with your help, he intends to keep doing it for at least another dozen (or couple dozen) years more! To commemorate this anniversary, in this episode, CJ shares & expounds upon a dozen of his many favorite quotes from the early 20th century American writer & social critic H.L. Mencken, including the quote that inspired the title of the DHP. (He also opens & closes the episode with inspirational poems by Edgar Albert Guest that encourage perseverance.) Like this episode? Send us Fan MailHear ye, hear ye! Gather round fair people of podland and lend the bold knaves and jesters of TGTPTU your ears for Episode Two-Beyond-a-Dozen of Season Seven-and-Ten. Hark, forthwith the trio tell tale of the Atari-level ren faire, chopped Star Wars glory that is KRULL (1983). This second selection by host Ken to bookend the career of hack director Peter Yates, a two-time Oscar-nominated director (in 1979 for Breaking Away covered next ep and for his other film in 1983 The Dresser), Krull was an international production with a James Horner score and a young Liam Neesom and an as-young-as-he-maybe-ever-got Robbie Coltrane in supporting roles, although it should be noted the latter was redubbed by a Brit. Krull is a scifi-ish fantasy movie that opens with voiceover prophecies for events that will not occur during the film and closes with more of the same. It has a young prince who becomes king, lovers with the powers of fire on water, a merry band of criminals turned good, a cyclops, flying horses, a shapeshifter, a kid, a puppy, baddies with medieval weapons that shoot lasers unless the fight is within melee proximity, quicksand death, a legendary weapon of +2 spinning, the black void, and a giant head to be attacked and defeated Contra-style. What it lacked (NOTE: following list not exhaustive) was a convincing lead actor, coherent worldbuilding, box office success, and artistic merit. Beyond this, Krull belies both description and explanation. But listen anyway this week as the hosts try to find some rhyme or reason for its being while also competing to find the best worst-thing about the film, with Thomas accusing Ken of Krull and unusual punishment for his film selection. Within the profession of industrial and systems engineering, the names Frank and Lillian Gilbreth are everywhere - appearing on awards, scholarships, professorships, and libraries. But who were the people behind those names, and how did their work help shape the profession we know today? In this episode of Problem Solved, historian Mike Farrelly of the Montclair History Center and Township Historian takes us on a journey through the lives of Frank and Lillian Gilbreth, the pioneering husband-and-wife team whose innovations laid the foundation for modern industrial and systems engineering.Hear how Frank began his career by revolutionized bricklaying, how the Gilbreths pioneered motion studies using photography and film, and how their work influenced fields ranging from construction and manufacturing to surgery and workplace design. The episode also explores Lillian's groundbreaking contributions as a psychologist, educator, inventor, and one of the most influential women in engineering history.Along the way, Mike shares fascinating stories about the real-life family behind Cheaper by the Dozen, including how the Gilbreths applied their principles at home while raising 12 children.Whether you're an industrial engineer, a student of history, or simply curious about the people whose ideas continue to shape the way we work and live, this episode offers a fascinating look at two remarkable innovators whose legacy can still be felt more than a century later.A huge thank you to our guest, Mike Farrelly, for sharing this thorough look at this remarkable family.• Learn more about the Montclair History Center• Watch Mike Farrelly's presentation featuring historical photographs of the Gilbreth family and their work:https://youtu.be/5N6RR0XD5Tk?si=LW9ixkOys1MqGZTL• Read Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank B.
