In this episode of Baker's Dozen, part of RANE's Insight series of podcasts, Rodger Baker speaks with Hameed Hakimi, an analyst and policy researcher focused among other things on Afghanistan, Pakistan, and regional connectivity between South and Central Asia. In the weeks since the Taliban took over Kabul and declared victory in Afghanistan, there has been no shortage of blame and recriminations passed around over the “loss” of Afghanistan and the chaotic final days of the U.S. presence in the country. Considerable attention has also been paid to the risks of terrorism or instability spilling from Afghanistan, and the social policies of the Taliban in Afghanistan. What is often missing is an understanding of Afghanistan, both in its internal construct and its regional context. Welcome back to the Happy Half Hour! We're back after a short Labor Day break, and we're with Justin Gaspar, the head baker at Hommage Bakehouse in Pacific Beach. Hommage, which launched last fall, is based inside La Clochette du Coin, a French bakery and café. Justin, who is from the Bay Area and worked at the acclaimed Manresa Bread (that's the bakery that spun off from Manresa restaurant, which has three Michelin stars), says the pastries he bakes at Hommage honor both his Filipino heritage as well as his classic French training. Justin walks us through the menu, from the croissants to the kouign-amanns and breads, and gives us a preview of soon-to-debut pastries like an ube custard bun. You have to try the kouign-amann with blueberry compote! Justin also shares with us the big news that he will be competing on Baker's Dozen, a new Hulu show that streams on October 7. In Hot Plates, Cocina de Barrio, a Oaxacan restaurant in Hillcrest that made our Best Restaurants list for Best Birria, is opening a second location in Point Loma. Kingfisher, a modern Vietnamese restaurant and bar that's been in the works, is opening soon in Golden Hill. Mike Minor, who worked at Border Grill in Las Vegas, was promoted from chef de cuisine to executive chef at The Marine Room. Finally, Michelin is publishing its guide to California this month, and yesterday they released a preview of restaurants in San Diego as “new gems and returning culinary stars.” For Two People, $50, Justin recommends the Bees Mode pizza at Tribute Pizza. Troy's pick this week is the ahi crudo at Catania, and David says to order the jungle curry mussels at Hoxton Manor. Thank you for listening! As always, we want to hear from you. Need a restaurant recommendation? Is there a guest you want us to book on the show? Let us know! You can call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a voicemail, or if you're too shy, you can email us at happyhalfhour@sdmag.com. See you next week.

Hi everybody, and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. This week's guest is the host of the Cinema Dave Media YouTube channel, Dave Burland. When Dave and I got in touch, two things stood out to me that made me want to speak with him about Phish: first, he is a huge fan of The Who, just like I am, so we have a lot of shared musical DNA. Second, he is a huge movie buff. And although I wouldn't call myself a film buff, I will say that, after music, movies are my biggest passion. So this seemed like a perfect match. For today's episode, Dave picked July 30, 2017, better known as the “Jimmies” night of the Baker's Dozen. In an earlier episode with author Jason Gershuny, he and I went over Glazed Night, the final night of the run, but Jimmies Night just seemed to hit different. It was the same summer, but tonally, it was completely different and you'll hear Dave and I spend a lot of time about the details, the appeal, and the tone of the Baker's Dozen as a whole. So let's join Dave to hear about the Criterion Collection, Phish's version of Drowned, and Baker's Dozen setlist predictions, as we discuss July 30, 2017.

On August 4, 2021, Dr. Joseph Mercola posted a YouTube video announcing that within 48 hours, his entire website, including 15,000+ published articles, would be gone. How could one of the most influential, modern-day natural health advocates reach a point where he felt forced to remove his entire library of content, articles and videos that have changed countless lives for the better? With the removal of his site and online store, what happens next? What message does this send to those who promote the scientific evidence behind: dietary patterns far superior to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans?nutritional supplements, botanicals, or essential oils that support better mental, physical, and emotional heath?risks associated with medical therapies that many doctors don't know about?  How did this even happen? The Biden Administration and the Center for Countering Digital Hate How did Dr. Joseph Mercola and 11 others become part of a targeted group, dubbed the Disinformation Dozen? Most people first heard of this influential group of alternative health advocates from White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki. There's about 12 people who are producing 65% of anti-vaccine misinformation on social media platforms.Jen Psaki, July 15 Press Conference The announcement made it sound like the White House identified these charlatans who continued to question the safety of an unapproved vaccine that has zero long-term data in humans. How dare they try to help the public make an informed decision. It wasn't the White House that came up with a report on this group. Instead, it was an activist organization called the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH). The CCDH has close ties with the progressive movement in the United States. The CCDH published a “report,” which is more of a baseless smear campaign against 12 online sources of vaccine-related information, including the risks of vaccination. The Disinformation Dozen includes: Joseph MercolaRobert F. Kennedy, Jr.Ty and Charlene BollingerSherri TenpennyRizza IslamRashid ButtarErin ElizabethSayer JiKelly BroganChristine NorthrupBen TapperKevin Jenkins If you've questioned the narratives we've been exposed to the past couple of years, you've probably come across content from the people above. From what I've seen of the content they produce, it's rarely published without solid scientific evidence to support it. Is the goal to do away with natural medicine? At the time of writing this, blooming Goldenrod surrounds our home. The yellow plant contains saponins, quercetin, and kaempherol, compounds that lower inflammation, support urinary function, and combat the growth of yeast. Natural and alternative healthcare practitioners often recommend goldenrod extracts and essential oils for these and other health benefits. Goldenrod is just one of the many medicinal plants that grow wild in our woods. Thousands more grow in other parts of the world. Throughout history, these God-given plants have helped humans look, feel, and perform better. But because they're freely available and naturally occurring, there's no way to patent them, and therefore, no way to make ridiculous loads of money with them. So, humans make up chemical compounds that do what the plants do, and then market them as superior. At the same time, they promote the natural products as inferior, or even dangerous. People like Mercola helped us understand this long ago. By shutting him down, it's easier to convince Americans that the government's guidance is the only accurate guidance. The government becomes the gatekeeper of “science” and the arbiter of truth. If that doesn't send shivers down your spine, you probably don't have a spine. when knowledge is so obfuscated that it requires an interpreter or an oracle to explain it to common people, a priesthood is born and a cult is formed around it. To understand what the “god” of science has to say today,

Give yourself some bad mood bangs and button up those fuzzy cardigans and tune in to episode 5 of our season dedicated to diva debuts on-screen. Film writer Karen Janszen and Adam Shankman (dir. The Wedding Planner; Cheaper by the Dozen 2) use the dazzling writing of Nicholas Sparks (writ. The Notebook; Nights in Rodanthe) to take us on A Walk to Remember (2002)--one that we'll never forget. This week, Jo and Rhiannon and Jamie (played by enigmatic chartreuse Mandy Moore) are here to teach all of you unruly, misunderstood boys a thing or two about love, faith, telescopes, and abstinence. This coming-of-age romantic drama film got us playing fast and loose roulette with the Christian Church, so don't miss this episode before we're excommunicated and forced to be the leads in the spring musical, just like Landon (fan favorite Shane West).
