Riding Shotgun With Charlie #227  Jonathan Goldstein NRA BOD, NRA 2.0 Candidate   This is a small first, but a first nonetheless. Jonathan Goldstein flew up from Philadelphia to Boston just to film a show with me! Yes, I'm beyond honored! He's also working that hard to get elected for the NRA Board of Directors. And in his home state of Pennsylvania for their gun owners. It's always fun to meet someone new and widen my circle of friends. I picked up Jonathan at the airport and we drove for a bit to get to know each other.  We kick things off quickly and jump in deep, talking about Bruen, open carry v concealed, and why some laws aren't conducive to logic. He's got a great line, borrowed from Chris Conte from the NRA ILA, about “New Jersey being the North Korea of gun ownership.” I knew things were going to be fun after that.    Jonathan didn't really grow up as a gun guy. He owned IT businesses and sold them before going to law school. Besides that, he was a newlywed and applied for law school, and was on the ballot for the state legislature. After not liking the big law firm, he got together with some other friends and started outsourcing legal work to India.  But as he says everyone “hates outsourcing, but they hate lawyers more.”    Back in 1994, the gun laws were being redone in the Pa. There were lots of folks against it and he wanted to see what they were against. Each of the towns and cities were supposed to have the same laws. But they decided they were going to have different classes of cities, and thus, Philly was in its own class. Therefore, having its own laws that the rest of the state didn't have. He started thinking about why the politicians were so set against lawful gun ownership. That piqued his interest and that's when he became a gun owner. He got a permit, bought a snub revolver, got into shotguns and bird hunting and found a new passion.    Around the time Heller was going on in 2008, he was getting more involved in getting cases and getting noticed by the NRA. This is where he became friends with Chris Conte at NRA ILA. In 2011, he was awarded the Defender of Justice by NRA ILA. He also helped raise money for the NRA.    On the radar of the NRA, he ends up on a couple committees, one for the legal affairs and one for the non-traditional gun owner, those of racial and sexual minorities. With enough trust, he was placed on the nominating committee. That's when he started seeing that things were not necessarily going so well. That's when he started seeing that some BOD members weren't there for wholesome reasons. He saw that they weren't all rowing in the same direction. Some of the folks haven't seen that the old tactics aren't working, haven't been, and don't want to change.    We got into it a bit more of course. He's very passionate about the NRA and what is going on and what needs to be changed. I really enjoyed the conversation with Jonathan and I look forward to seeing him in Atlanta in April.    This wraps up the five interviews I've done with the NRA 2.0 Candidates running on the reform ticket. I've had another five or so on the show over the years. I'm voting for all 28 of the “Reformers”. I enjoyed the conversations with them all. As with the NRA staff that I've had on the show, I can see the passion for the NRA and our rights that they have and they're fighting for. These 28 candidates know that the NRA didn't earn the respect of the members, their funds, and their support. I do have faith in them and what they plan on doing to resurrect the NRA from what has been going on. I have confidence in them and I'm looking forward to the progress for gun owners across the country.    While it is too late to become a life member and be able to vote, it's not too late to vote for those who haven't yet. Ballots were sent out in the February magazines and have to be received by April 6, 2025.    Favorite quotes: “The goal is to frustrate the gun owner.” “The modality that works best today is concealed carry. Not open carry.” “The fact that I carry a gun keeps you safer. You're welcome.” “What do these politicians intend to do to me that my ownership of firearms is a threat to them.” “NRA is back on the map. We're clean. We're well run. We deserve to get out seat at the table back.”   Elect A New NRA Website https://electanewnra.com/   Goldstein Law Partners https://goldsteinlp.com/   Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun    Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/     Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters.    Self Defense Radio Network http://sdrn.us/   Buy a Powertac Flashlight, use RSWC as the discount code and save 15% www.powertac.com/RSWC   SABRE Red Pepper Spray  https://lddy.no/1iq1n   Or listen on: iTunes/Apple podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/riding-shotgun-with-charlie/id1275691565

In a law-packed Cyberlaw Podcast episode, Chris Conte walks us through the long, detailed, and justifiably controversial SEC enforcement action against SolarWinds and its top infosec officer, Tim Brown. It sounds to me as though the SEC's explanation for its action will (1) force companies to examine and update all of their public security documents, (2) transmit a lot more of their security engineers' concerns to top management, and (3) quite possibly lead to disclosures beyond those required by the SEC's new cyber disclosure rules that would alert network attackers to what security officials know about the attack in something close to real time.  Jim Dempsey does a deep dive into the administration's executive order on AI, adding details not available last week when we went live. It's surprisingly regulatory, while still trying to milk jawboning and public-private partnership for all they're worth. The order more or less guarantees a flood of detailed regulatory and quasiregulatory initiatives for the rest of the President's first term. Jim resists our efforts to mock the even more in-the-weeds OMB guidance, saying it will drive federal AI contracting in significant ways. He's a little more willing, though, to diss the Bletchley Park announcement on AI principles that was released by a large group of countries. It doesn't say all that much, and what it does say isn't binding.  David Kris covers the Supreme Court's foray into cyberlaw this week – oral argument in two cases about when politicians can curate the audience that interacts with their social media sites. This started as a Trump issue, David reminds us, but it has lost its predictable partisan valence, so now it's just a surprisingly hard constitutional controversy that, as Justice Elena Kagan almost said, left the Supreme Court building littered with first amendment rights. Finally, I drop in on Europe to see how that Brussels Effect is doing. Turns out that, after years of huffing and puffing, the privacy bureaucrats are dropping the hammer on Facebook's data-fueled advertising model. In a move that raises doubts about how far from Brussels the Brussels Effect can reach, Facebook is changing its business model, but just for Europe, where kids won't get ads and grownups will have the dubious option of paying about ten bucks a month for Facebook and Insta. Another straw in the wind: Ordered by the French government to drop Russian government news channels, YouTube competitor Rumble has decided to drop France instead. Theme parks have become a place where fans and guests can travel into new worlds and experience much more than just a thrilling ride. These immersive experiences are getting bigger, more detailed, and are requiring the support of innovative AV installs. As consumers come to expect more from their theme park visits, where does AV fit into the puzzle to enhance the experience? On today's episode of the Pro AV Podcast, we get insight from thought leaders at Electrosonic: UK Senior Consultant Paul Kent, and US Vice President Chris Conte. With consumers setting the tone for what's next in theme park rides, the pressure is on. "The goal is to give them something that's better than what they could experience at home," Kent said. "It can be a challenge because you have all these fantastic movies and TV shows...then for them to come alive in a theme park, it's a real-time experience. There are big expectations," Conte said. "And no time for post-production like in the movies. The production has to be flawless," Kent added. So how does AV offer production teams the ability to pull off these immersive experiences, without getting in the way of the experience? It's a tight line to walk, because mismanaged AV installations can often pull end-users out of an experience if the installations aren't added in with direction and intentionality behind the design. "We're asked all the time, how we can create a 'wow' moment and pull people into the experience. It's the fun part of designing these attractions, but it can be tricky. Interactivity is a buzz word for designers and creators. They have to create a linear storyline while also considering the throughput of getting an audience through the ride in a few minutes," Conte said. "Group interactive much more challenging than an individual experience like VR. AR will really be the technology that's more viable in theme parks." That storytelling, at the end of the day, is what makes today's theme park attraction successful, and AV has to be a welcomed addition to the larger narrative of the ride, exhibit, or park as a whole. Conte, who had the opportunity to visit 'Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge' before opening to the public, had to point to Disneyland's newest attraction as a perfect example of a successful . "I was blown away by the detail, some of the best art direction I've ever seen. When you enter the ride, you are fully immersed into the world of Star Wars. It's not just the physical pieces. It's the sound, the lights, the technology. It's truly amazing," he said.

Steelers 30  Tampa Bay 27 The Steelers manage to hang on to 30-27 victory over the QB formerly known as Ryan Fitzmagic and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There was as much to love about this game as there was to hate. Certainly the defense is not showing signs of marked improvement, although there were some entertaining turnovers to watch. The offense is emerging as the irresistible force for which it is designed, but lack of possessions in the second half thwarted the juggernaut, endangering what was at one time a 20 point lead. Vance "Can-Crusher" McDonald sparked the Steelers early in the game, stiff-arming Chris Conte to spring himself loose for a 75 yard touchdown romp. Hopefully this is the beginning of something beautiful.     Please drop us a note:  Hit us up on Twitter at @Steelersoutpost  Leave us a note at the website - www.Steelersoutpost.com  Shoot us an email at Steelersoutpost@gmail.com

Richard talks to Chris Conte about his experiences deploying SharePoint into the military. Chris talks about his early days in the Navy as a yeoman, first learning the potential of personal computers to make the work of handling the huge amount of data the military produces easier. The conversation digs into how SharePoint governance is as much a challenge for the military as industry, and how strong metadata infrastructure has made data more findable, understandable and useable. Chris also talks about the concept of 'Responsibility to Share' as opposed to 'Need to Know' - a deep change for the military, but also a huge one to apply to the enterprise. Are you sharing the data you need to share with the people who need to know it? Can SharePoint help?
