Hope springs eternal as Chicago White Sox baseball is finally back. Yes, it's just spring training. Yes, the games don't count. Yes, it might matter very little. It's been a long offseason and baseball is being played, which is enough of a reason to celebrate. The White Sox had a forgettable weekend as they lost their first two games of the Spring. Sox fell to the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Angels over the weekend. Lance Lynn got the start for the Sox in Game 1. He went his scheduled three innings and looked comfortable on the mound. Aside from home runs by Jake Burger and Gavin Sheets against the Padres, the White Sox could not get much going offensively in their first two games. Situational hitting was a problem last season but new hitting coach, Jose Castro, is well aware of the struggles and is making it a focus. Eloy Jiménez really, really wants to play right field for the Chicago White Sox. Jiménez dropped 25-30 pounds this past offseason and has been putting a lot of work in the outfield with hopes he can spend more of his time in right field than on the bench waiting for his opportunity to hit. Pedro Grifol appears to be encouraging Jiménez to keep up the impressive work and to not settle for simply the designated hitter distinction. Lance Lynn gets the nod for the first game of the spring. Way too early predictions for the upcoming Chicago White Sox season as we turn the page on a bizarre 2022. It was the final road trip for the White Sox as they are now home for their final series against the Minnesota Twins. The Minnesota Twins defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-0 in Tuesday's series opener at Target Field. Starting their final home series of the season, the Twins shutout the Sox. Bailey Ober was terrific, striking out a career-high 10 batters in 7 1/3 scoreless innings. Matt Wallner hit a two-run homer off Lance Lynn to double the Twins' lead, his second of the season. The Chicago White Sox (76-73) lost to the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday by a score of 8-2. This was supposed to be a must sweep series for the White Sox but they have now lost the first two games. After an emotional loss on Tuesday, the White Sox turned in an embarrassing and apathetic performance. Elvis Andrus and Andrew Vaughn each struck out three times. White Sox offense only managed two runs. Yoan Moncada committed and error and looked like he did not want to be playing in a baseball game. Lance Lynn did not have his best stuff and could not find ways to be effective. The Sox were all but eliminated from postseason play when they lost to the Guardians in extra innings on Tuesday and on Wednesday, the White Sox looked like they flat out quit. The Chicago White Sox (74-70) beat the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday by a score of, 8-2. The White Sox shuffled their rotation and called upon Lance Lynn to stifle the Guardians. He did exactly that. It was Lynn's fifth quality start in a row as he kept Cleveland off balance and prevented any power surge. The White Sox flexed their muscles, however, hitting five home runs in the game. Their first seven hits were extra base hits. The Sox hit homeruns in four straight innings, something they have not done in ten years. Yoan Moncada had a big game, going 4-for-5 and was a triple short of the cycle. The Chicago White Sox (73-70) lost to the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday by a score of 3-0. Pat Hester from the weekly White Sox podcast, Good Guys Talk Back, joins the episode to discuss the state of the Sox as we gear up for the big matchup with the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday. White Sox starter, Dylan Cease, did not have his sharpest stuff on Wednesday afternoon and the Sox defense did not help him out but Cease only went five innings, giving up three earned runs and throwing 107 pitches. White Sox offense was lifeless. They had eight hits, zero runs and went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Thursday's game against the Cleveland Guardians is a must win.
