Hoo boy this is a big one. Don't worry, we get to the aftermath of the trade deadline and Jane has her crashout, but first we talk about Ichiro's Hall of Fame speech, the Phillies fans getting inappropriate sexual style in the stands of Yankee Stadium, Harper getting pretty aggro with Rob Manfred, Rich Hill getting DFA'd, Emmanuel Clase being investigated for gambling, and everyone on the Tigers is Touching It. We wrap it up with Stephen's review of the Savannah Bananas game. Support the show and get access to bonus episodes, including the one we just did on The Naked Gun, at Patreon.com/BattingAround.

What happens when the challenges students face outside the classroom overshadow everything happening within it? In this episode of our school-focused movie review series, we dive into Rich Hill—the 2014 Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning documentary that offers an unfiltered look into the lives of three teenage boys growing up in rural Missouri. The film captures the challenges they face in poverty-stricken homes, unstable environments, and a school system struggling to support them. Joining us to break down the themes and realities of Rich Hill is a special guest - Dr. Julie Williams, a school superintendent at Fayetteville Public Schools who brings invaluable insight into how schools are navigating similar struggles across the country. Together, we explore what the film gets right, what educators can learn from it, and how it pushes us to think differently about the role schools play in students' lives beyond academics.   Takeaways: Rich Hill shows how hunger, housing insecurity, and mental health challenges often come before homework. For schools, this underscores the need for trauma-informed practices and wraparound services. The boys in the film don't just struggle in school—they struggle to show up, to stay focused, to feel safe. Educators are reminded that consistency, structure, and relationships are just as essential as curriculum. The film highlights how cycles of poverty are perpetuated by factors outside any one school's control—but it also shows the power of local leadership and community partnerships in starting to break those cycles.       Learn More About Julie Williams: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjulierwilliams/     Connect with host, Kevin Stoller: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinstoller/   Learn More About Kay-Twelve: Website: https://kay-twelve.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/kay-twelve-com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kay_twelve/     Episode 243 of the Better Learning Podcast Kevin Stoller is the host of the Better Learning Podcast and Co-Founder of Kay-Twelve, a national leader for educational furniture. No Crying In Baseball

In a surprising twist, this week's police blotter is Little League-centric, from the policy to the personal. The entire Venezuelan Senior Little League team, made up of 13-16 year olds, was denied visas to participate in the Senior Little League World Series held in South Carolina this week. Yes, the United States broke the hearts of an entire team who not only proved themselves the best in Venezuela, then traveled to Bogotá in order to obtain visas, to then be told they are too much of a security threat to enter the US. And here at home, a player competing for the NJ Little League title was ejected from a game and then suspended for a bat flip.  Which is not against the rules. “Horseplay” was added later to the “unsportsmanlike conduct” charge because even though it is in the eye of the beholder, horseplay appears in the safety rules. In boyfriend news, Pottymouth's catcher continues to be all Wong, even if her infielders are adorable (cue the drinking game). Cristopher Sanchez tosses a complete game to stay in Patti's good graces. Cal menaces more records, and Cedric's incredible game may be a swan song. Old guy Justin Turner jokes with old guy Rich Hill, while Tito and Kevin trade manager-level pranks. Nick Kurtz makes his young presence known, even if that triple is elusive. Women in Baseball Week is bracketed by the end of Baseball for All Nationals, and the lead up to the All-American Women's Baseball Classic. We say, “Italian-sized pilsner – it's shaped like a boot,” “That's a little Amish joke,” and “I get to woo, you get to woo, we both get woo.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. The last one was by the Dodgers, against the Reds on August 1, 1971, with Manny Mota daring to steal home and Johnny Bench behind the plate. Rich Hill, global head of real estate research at Principal Asset Management, was a guest on the latest episode of the REIT Report podcast. He shared insights into sentiment within the REIT space today, public-private valuations, foreign fund flows into U.S. listed real estate, the elements of a resilient, growth-oriented real estate investment portfolio, and more. Hill stressed that commercial real estate should be viewed as a “diversified portfolio of various different property types, not just in the U.S. but in Europe. There is an opportunity someplace, somewhere in the world to add value through listed REITs and we think that will continue.” He noted that adding listed REITs to a private portfolio of real estate reduces volatility. “We advocate for having a 10% to 30% allocation to listed REITs within a private portfolio of real estate because we really do think it optimizes portfolios,” he said.
