It is often said that surveyors don't know how to retire and that they go on to do bigger and better things. This week's episode of “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast proves exactly that as we catch up with Steve Martin, a recently retired surveyor formerly with the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD). He is a long serving CLSA member (2011 Member of the Year recipient) and dedicated steward to the “GPS on Benchmarks” initiative through NGS (for more information, listen to Episode 111 w/ Galen Scott). Steve recent chatted with Tim Burch about his efforts to recover and submit data for the initiative, thoughts on mentoring, and the future of the profession. Check out Steve's efforts through his posts on LinkedIn and let him know that his work is appreciated! Thanks for listening to “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast and subscribe wherever you listen to your audio selections. Galen & Scott did a quick live show on Twitter after the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday. Posting that audio here on the Podcast feed. Enjoy!
We promised to have him back! This week is the return of our favorite National Geodetic Survey (NGS) Constituent Resources Manager, Mr. Galen Scott. Back in Episode 71, Galen discussed the popular GPS on Benchmarks program that uses crowdsourced geodetic information from around the country to help NGS with future transformation tools. We appreciate you tuning in to listen to “Geospatial with Galen” and he will be back soon to talk about all things OPUS and other great things from NGS. Thanks again for listening to “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast. https://geodesy.noaa.gov/web/science_edu/webinar_series/gpsonbm-nsrs-campaign-continues.shtml https://geodesy.noaa.gov/GPSonBM/
Happy National Surveyor’s Week! Our guest this week is Galen Scott from the National Geodetic Survey (NGS). As the Constituent Resources Manager, Galen is involved with many of the tools and programs going on within NGS. He chatted recently with Tim Burch about the GPS on Benchmarks program and how important having crowdsourced data is for completing the geoid base for the 2022 datum changes. Galen also announced the new features to the OPUS programs, including a simplified way for bluebooking significant control stations AND the feature to upload RTK data to incorporate with your OPUS solutions. Lots of great stuff coming out of Silver Spring! This is the first in a new series with Galen and lots of great things from NGS so stay tuned for even more! Thanks again for listening to “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast.
Justin and Tim jump into week 2 of the 2019 college football season, breaking down all of the action across the ACC and making their picks for each game. There are a lot of intriguing coaching matchups with Manny Diaz and Mack Brown facing off for the first time as head coaches as Miami is currently a surprise road underdog against North Carolina, Mike London's return to Charlottesville, and Bryan Stinespring and Galen Scott patrolling the sidelines for Old Dominion as they head to Blacksburg looking to upset the Hokies for the second straight year (they don't think they will). On Episode 37 of the Teel Time podcast, David Teel and Jonathan Heeter talk about the NFL Draft and look at Virginia Tech's historic night in Texas. The Hokies became the first school in history to have two brothers drafted in the first round of the same NFL Draft with Tremaine Edmunds headed to the Buffalo Bills and Terrell Edmunds landing in Pittsburgh. We talk about the topline quarterbacks and try to figure out the difference in Baker Mayfield and Lamar Jackson, and we talk about the other Virginia and Virginia Tech players who were selected. We talk about the fallout of the resignation of Virginia Tech assistant football coach Galen Scott in the aftermath of his admitted extramarital affair. With the Hokies already through spring practice, how good of a candidate can the Hokies draw with the fall practice approaching? We put a bow on spring practice for U.Va., and Teel talks about his sitdown this week with Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock. We talk about the upcoming ACC Network and how cable viewership numbers and cutting the cable cord could affect the network. And, we manage to get in a little NBA playoffs conversation. Music: Slow Burn by Kevin MacLeod.
With spring practice wrapped up, and the NFL Draft in the rearview mirror, there was plenty of content for this episode. Robbie and Pete covered a lot of ground, breaking down the Galen Scott resignation, the history-making first night of the draft, and the spring game itself. The pod comes off the rails a bit around the hour mark, and is a little NSFW, but, hopefully, our more immature listeners find it enjoyable. Apologies in advance for those offended; just some goofing around after a couple beers... probably best to listen with a beverage of your own.
Andy Bitter and Aaron McFarling are back to talk about what was an eventful week in Blacksburg, starting with co-defensive coordinator Galen Scott's surprise resignation. We move on to the NFL Draft, where the Edmunds brothers had a historic night and several other Hokies were selected. We touch on the strange bit of animosity out there for Josh Jackson from a very vocal segment of the fan base before we move on to some listener questions about what other ACC programs we'd like to cover, what Devon Hunter's outlook is this year and what's on our bucket list of sports events to attend. Mike Barber of the Richmond Times-Dispatch stopped by to discuss two very different stories out of Virginia Tech: the Edmunds brothers being the first to be drafted in the same NFL Draft first round, as well as the Galen Scott resignation story. NC Sports Hall of Fame inductee Wes Chesson reflects back on the "Shoestring Play," his time at Duke, and the great support he's had at every stage of his life.
Joining host Curt Sumner for a discussion on the topic will be Frank Lenik. Frank has many titles and responsibilities in NSPS, one of which is as Chair/coordinator for National Surveyors Week activities. Joining Frank will be Galen Scott with NOAA/NGS to discuss tying the GPS on Bench Marks campaign with National Surveyors Week.
