Pixelated Audio is back from another VGMCon in Minnesota, this time about space! Joining Gene once again from last year are Pernell from Rhythm and Pixels and Carlos from Heroes Three! We did a similar panel last year; we take a broad theme and make it educational, and then use it as an excuse to cram in all sorts of VGM examples. We had some tech issues and lost some of the recording but we were able to rescue it with a more laid back "part 2" we recorded in the hotel room as a way to fill in gaps and riff for a while. Prepare for launch on this massive double episode clocking in at almost 2 hours! We discuss space, its influence on games and computing, and a wide range of games that have a direct or sometimes tenuous link to space. We've got a ton of music this episode so we hope you enjoy it. Pardon the noise in the background, it was the best we could do with a portable recorder. If you'd like to follow along with our slides that we used during the talk, feel free to click through. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
David Lowe, or El Flaco, is our guest today. I saw a post on Facebook, with David at the Southern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail after his FOURTH successful completion. Along with those four, he's completed the Triple Crown by doing the PCT and CDT as well. David is an engaging fellow, with plenty of wisdom and wit to share, so I'm sure you'll be inspired by him. Somewhat bizarrely, David told me that his second thru-hike came about because of the terrible summit picture from his first thru-hike. When you see it, you may understand! Dave and his tramily are going to be parting ways shortly, as he heads home for a family get together, but he is hiking strongly with Ahoy and Sad Soup and will doubtless miss them when they are forced to split. For now, though, they've pushed past the 600 mile marker. Beth and Andrew are about a month behind, going through Hot Springs and experiencing some of the impact the storm had on that town. They also share great shots from the trail. I used my hike last year on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. You can learn more about the hike and the organization–and donate–by visiting https://parentingmattersfl.org/eventer/hike-with-steve-empowering-parents-one-step-at-a-time/edate/2024-04-15/. I hope you want to support this critical mission. Don't forget. Our entire series of videos from our Woods Hole Weekend in 2022 is now FREE and available at my YouTube page at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wA8ImK4qpNc&list=PLu8u88nsJtgWZxT8DLwEW2yXcz4gT6HXs There, you'll find all sorts of tips and tricks that our guests took away from the weekend that helped them with their own hikes this year. Check it out. I often ask listeners for ideas on who to interview, and I'm sure several of you say, “I could do that. I've got an awesome story to tell.” You're the person we need to hear from. If you'd like to be interviewed on the podcast, just register as a guest on the link below, and I'll be in touch. https://www.hikingradionetwork.com/show/mighty-blue-on-the-appalachian-trail-the-ultimate-mid-life-c/guests/intake/ If you like what we're doing on the Hiking Radio Network, and want to see our shows continue, please consider supporting us with either a one-off or monthly donation. You'll find the donate button on each Hiking Radio Network page at https://www.hikingradionetwork.com . 14 August 1923: Ireland's first licensed radio station takes to the air... Yes for one episode, The British Broadcasting Century leaves Britain to become The Irish Broadcasting Century. Well how could we not bring you the tale of Marconi setting up a (legal) radio station at the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin, to broadcast to the Horse Show... only to be closed down a few days later because the government panicked - and especially in the company of the Irish broadcasting historian Eddie Bohan. After Ireland in 1923, we return to Britain in the present-day for an interview with composer David Lowe - the man behind the BBC News theme (as well as The One Show, Grand Designs, Countryfile and more). David's new album of official BBC News themes (and remixes) is available now from Spotify, Apple Music and other places. SHOWNOTES: David Lowe's album of Official BBC News Themes is on Spotify, Apple Music etc: https://davidlowemusic.com/product/bbc-news-official-themes/ David's website is https://davidlowemusic.com/ Eddie Bohan's book The History of 2BP: Ireland's First Licensed Radio Station is available from https://amzn.to/4jcoVwe Eddie's brilliant blog is at The Irish Broadcasting Hall of Fame: https://ibhof.blogspot.com/ We also mention these episodes: See episode 48 for more on 2BP's earlier role for Daimler's in-car radios at the Glasgow Motor Show in January 1923. In a disturbing incident at the Clark County Jail in Indiana, former corrections officer David Lowe sold keys to the female section of the jail to male inmates for $1,000 each on October 23, 2021. This led to a "night of terror" where male inmates gained access to the women's cells and reportedly assaulted multiple female inmates.Lowe has been arrested and faces charges of aiding escape, official misconduct, and trafficking with an inmate. He was immediately fired after the incident. The women involved have filed a federal lawsuit against Lowe, Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel, and other jail officers, citing systemic failures in security and staffing as contributing factors to the attack. The lawsuit alleges that no jail officers intervened during the attack and that subsequent punitive measures were taken against the women, such as revoking their "dark privileges," placing them on lockdown, and confiscating personal items. The keys used in the attack were never recovered, and the cell locks were not changed, leaving the women in fear for their safety.(Clark county has settled with 25 of the women who brought claims against the county for a total of $328,000. )(commercial at 8:06)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/female-inmates-raped-after-jailer-sells-key-to-cell-for-1k-lawsuit-claims/ar-AA101RqI?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=c4ce6843eb2f41da9da907f2436826be

Entbehrlich: Ist EXPENDABLES 4 eine Mogelpackung oder nicht? Wen bringt THE NUN 2 zum Gruseln?

CASABLANCA? THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION? 2001? SIEBEN? From KINO+ with love.

Is it ok to smile before Christmas? This week my guest, David Lowe and I talk about humour in the classroom - what it is, how it can help learning and how it can go wrong, there are also some (very good) jokes! If you want to find out more about David's research or get involved you can visit his website hahasquad.com. Research Mentioned: Huber, G. & Brown, A. (2017) Identity Work, Humour and Disciplinary Power (in Organization Studies) found: Humour is used by coop workers to set and uphold norms Identity creation categorised into: 'homogenising' (common characteristics across the group, i.e. identifying as part of the co-op community; respectful to each other); differentiating (identifying how they are different from other members of the organisation who have undesirable characteristics, i.e. being a flexible rule follower vs officious; not too serious/self-righteous); personalising (identifying as independent from the coop, i.e. being oneself/having autonomy). Power is help by collective workforce, not just implemented by specific people or groups (i.e. managers) Research into humour and academic success: Archakis, Argiris, and Villy Tsakona (2005) Analyzing Conversational Data in Gtvh Terms: A New Approach to the Issue of Identity Construction Via Humor (in HUMOR: International journal of humor research) - studied youths and found that people used humour as a covert correction mechanism of in-group behaviour (reinforcing existing bonds, evaluation of behaviour) and social identity. Lovorn, M. (2008) Humor in the Home and in the Classroom: The Benefits of Laughing While We Learn (in Journal of Education and Human Development) -- social and intellectual development among preadolescent children can be enhanced and enriched when the children are exposed to the regular, structured, appropriate use of humor by parents and teachers.
I never listened much to Steve Wright In The Afternoon when he was on Radio 1. The show coincided with afternoon classes (if you went to a fancy boarding school). But when I did occasionally dip into it, it was full of characters, fun and excitement. Ahead of his final show later today, https://twitter.com/geoffjein/status/1575737119154184192?utm_source=james.crid.land&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=james.crid.land:2022-09-30 (Geoff Jein has shared some of the secrets of the show that he worked on for a while). Steve Wright was the stuff of legends: and when the beers flowed and someone from Radio 2 was present, inevitably the stories would flow. Not all of those stories were positive, it should be acknowledged; but “Steve Wright” was a shared piece of all of our childhood and, for many of us, one of the reasons that we got into radio in the first place. The magic, for me, was on Radio 1, on a crackly, pre-FM signal with David Bowie asking Steve what the time was (and, of course, what the temperature was). It probably was time, Steve, sorry. But even so, his last weekday show today feels like another chapter closing; another piece of unwelcome change; and the onset of a bit of melancholy. That's the power of radio. Steve Wright isn't the only bit of the BBC that is disappearing. Today, https://www.theguardian.com/media/2022/sep/29/hundreds-of-jobs-to-go-as-bbc-announces-world-service-cutbacks?utm_source=james.crid.land&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=james.crid.land:2022-09-30 (we learn that more than 380 jobs are to go from the BBC World Service). There will be no more language services in Arabic, Hindi or Chinese. Many other language services will go online-only. The last time I heard the BBC World Service was as a news bulletin on Fabulous 103, a radio station in Thailand. But that, too, appears to be going away. “The BBC will also shift its focus away from providing news bulletins to overseas broadcasters and instead try to convince audiences to use the BBC's own outlets and website.” In 2010, the awful, shortsighted, mendacious Conservative government https://www.theguardian.com/media/2010/oct/19/bbc-tv-licence-world-service?utm_source=james.crid.land&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=james.crid.land:2022-09-30 (forced the weak Director General Mark Thompson) into accepting no more government funding for the BBC World Service. It needed to be funded from the UK licence fee instead. That started in 2014. It, too, was better in the old days - a https://davidlowemusic.com/project/bbc-world-service/?utm_source=james.crid.land&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=james.crid.land:2022-09-30 (carefully, sensitively produced network-wide sound of station in 2007, written by David Lowe) made the station sound both cohesive but diverse - something many stations could benefit from today. The Mcasso 2018 remix, with the bland tagline “the world's radio station”, has never really grabbed me. The BBC World Service is available in Australia, 24 hours a day, 50 weeks of the year (yes, I know) on DAB+ via SBS Radio 3. It's also available in great swathes over the weekend on ABC News Radio. I listen to it a fair amount. It is still a fine-sounding radio station: one that is still a source of pride as a British citizen, and one that has incredible reach and power. The UK government appear to be dismantling the very best bits of the country. What makes this senseless gutting of the BBC World Service more galling is that it happens at the same week as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ed6g_pJyRJY&utm_source=james.crid.land&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=james.crid.land:2022-09-30 (this rather excellent promo for BBC News appears). It's a tradition for the UK Prime Minister to do a set of interviews on BBC Local Radio (or Local BBC Radio or whatever the marketing wonks want me to call it) just before the party conference.Liz Truss, the (checks watch) current UK Prime...

Texas House Public Health Committee Chairwoman Stephanie Klick killed the bill that would have abolished abortion and she killed the bill that would have abolished gender modification surgery on minors. Yet Texas Right to Life is fighting tooth and nail to reelect Klick against abolitionist David Lowe. By themselves, anti-abolitionist politicians wouldn't be able to get away with keeping abortion legal. But when they receive cover from the Pro-Life Establishment organizations, they are enabled to keep abortion legal for as long as they desire.
