As Food People, we know our way around a dinner party—or at least, we did, before we couldn't attend or throw any for almost two years. During that hosting hiatus we had plenty of time to think about what made dinner parties great but also what made them stressful, exhausting, and way too much work. This week on the show, Amanda talks to Test Kitchen director Chris Morocco and Associate Food Editor Zaynab Issa about the new rules they're following when it comes to entertaining in a post-lockdown world. They debate outsourcing the main course, skipping dessert, and what makes a “compelling and dynamic” salad. Along the way, we also turn to Katherine Lewin—owner of Big Night, a brilliantly stocked, expertly curated dinner party shop in Brooklyn—for a crash course on cheese and charcuterie. Stanley Tucci nearly broke the internet last year when he made a Negroni on Instagram. But long before that, the award-winning actor built his career around his love of food. He created the iconic food film Big Night, he's written best-selling cookbooks, and he eats his way through Italy in a new CNN series. Now he's released a memoir, Taste: My Life Through Food, which includes the revelation that a few years ago he battled oral cancer, which changed his relationship with food forever. He and Dan discuss that and much more, including the art of eating on camera. // Get 500+ more great Sporkful episodes from our catalog and lots of other Stitcher goodness when you sign up for Stitcher Premium: www.StitcherPremium.com/Sporkful (promo code: SPORKFUL). TAKE A SEAT, PUT YOUR NAPKIN ON YOUR LAP, AND UNDO YOUR BELT – YOU'RE IN FOR A VERITABLE BANQUET OF MOVIES ABOUT FOOD! Prepare yourself for the most mouthwatering, scrumptious, toothsome, and downright yummy episode of Genre Grinder yet. Gabe and returning guest/his significant other/food buddy, Kristine Fisher – who knows a thing or two about cooking – chow down on six courses of food-themed movies that mostly fit the concept of magical realism, including Jûzô Itami's Tampopo (1985), Gabriel Axel's Babette's Feast (Danish: Babettes gæstebud, 1987), Peter Greenaway's The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), Alfonso Aráu's Like Water for Chocolate (Spanish: Como agua para chocolate, 1992), Stephen Chow's The God of Cookery (1996), and Stanley Tucci & Campbell Scott's Big Night (1996). Please be aware that we recorded with two mics and it caused some weird crackly (thankfully not too loud) feedback to crop up every once in a while. I've done my best to mitigate the problem where I could and apologize for not fixing it during recording. 00:00 – Intro, food documentaries, classic food scenes 11:33 – Tampopo 23:37 – Babette's Feast 36:19 – The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover 59:19 – Like Water for Chocolate 1:12:30 – The God of Cookery 1:28:05 – Big Night 1:43:20 – Outro Please consider donating to the following charities/fundraisers if you have any spare cash: Second Harvest Heartland (MN food bank): https://secure.2harvest.org National Immigrant Justice Center: https://immigrantjustice.org/ Immigration Justice Campaign: https://immigrationjustice.us/ UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) Gaza Crisis Appeal: https://donate.unrwa.org/gaza/

Joined by guest Munson, Geoff Reid of the From First to Last Podcast, we discuss Tucci's early days as a Levi's Jeans model, Sir Geoffrey's unfortunate run-in with a Pauly Shore movie, Stanley's tendency to play a baddie, and examine just how closely he has flirted with the EGOT. Where does Tucci's career rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out.
Another game, another way to win, as Devin Booker led the Suns to a big win in Game Two of the NBA Finals despite 42 points from Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Bucks wasted a huge performance from their MVP because they could not stop the Suns' offense, which came alive for a 20-40 avalanche from deep in addition to Booker's brilliance. The Suns will need to keep their "0-0" mentality to stay aggressive and close out the series, but this game showed again that the Bucks have no answer for the Suns' star backcourt.
