We are the Light of the World… MaybeThe problem today in our culture is not the increasing darkness, but the ever-diminishing light in believers. For darkness is defined as the absence of light. And when light appears, it immediately vanquishes darkness without a struggle. But there is more. Scripture tells us that Christ is light, and therefore, so are we. We are children of light and are commanded to “walk as children of light” (Eph. 5:8). And Scripture describes the enemy as darkness.There was a man sent from God, whose name was John (the Baptist). This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light (Christ), that all through him might believe. He was not that Light (Christ), but was sent to bear witness of that Light (Christ).Summary: That was the true Light (Christ) which gives light to every man (was) coming into the world – John 1:6-9.But it gets even better. Consider what John later says about light.This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light (to what degree) and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him (light), and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if (condition) we walk in the light (to what degree) as He is in the light, (result) we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin – 1 John 1:6-7.So it appears the problem today with encroaching darkness is us, those who are light, yet hide our light from the world (Matt. 5:14-16). Why do we do that? Maybe it's because we fear the darkness. Or maybe we fear the persecution of the world, of being canceled, mocked, de-platformed, or whatever the darkness tries to do to conceal our light. But no matter. We have the mandate from our Lord to “let our light shine before men” (Matt. 5:16).So maybe we should be about just that. Remember:Fact: For you were once darkness, but now you are light (where) in the Lord.Command: Walk as children of light – Ephesians 5:8.Note: We are now (present tense) light in the Lord. We possess the Holy Spirit and take on the nature of Christ (Rom. 8:29), who is Light (1 John 1:5). And that makes us divinely powerful in Him.So let's get to it, shall we?How Do We Live as Light in the World?So how are we to be light in this dark world? And how do we fight against the darkness? Let me tell you how not to fight against the darkness. Not with anger, revenge, politics, or personal strength. None of the Rambo stuff. Nor by plotting, or scheming, or manipulating circumstances to meet our end. No, that's what the darkness does. We let Him do the fighting for us and rest in His promises and commands.In Him (Christ) was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend (katalambánō – to take, apprehend, overcome, to seize the position of and defeat, to gain control) it – John 1:4-5.Did you get that?When we surrender ourselves to the Lord, we allow Him to fight our battles for us (which was His whole plan in the first place). We find this command to surrender ourselves all throughout Scripture. Remember, He gets the glory when we allow Him to fight our battles for us, just like a loving Father. And He has promises for those who choose to trust Him, even in the thick of battle.Remember the questions in Romans 8?“Who shall bring a charge against God's elect?” – Romans 8:33.“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” – Romans 8:35.And the one where our faith either grows or fails… “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors (how) through Him who loved us” – Romans 8:37.And we pray and put...

WHO IS GOD? What does the text say about the character and nature of God? The Bible is God's story – Father, Son, Spirit- so we begin by asking about how his character and nature are revealed in what we're reading. The story is about Him! Look for specific references to his attributes: holy, eternal, all-powerful, all-knowing, ever present, unchanging, compassionate, gracious, patient, loving, kind, good, gentle, etc. In narrative portions, look for implied references to his attributes. What does the story reveal about his character and nature as Father, Son, and Spirit? 2. WHAT HAS HE DONE? What does the text say about the work of God? God's work throughout all of human history is diverse and magnificent. All of it is worth proclaiming! However, the person and work of Jesus is revealed on every page of the Bible (Luke 24:27). He is the hero and the main character. The Spirit does not want us to miss Jesus! Look for references to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, either through foreshadowing (saving Noah in the flood, redeeming Israel from slavery in Egypt, King David as a man after God's own heart), through prophecy (Psalm 22, Isaiah 53), or through the New Testament story of Jesus' earthly life and the establishment of his church. This ensures a uniquely Christian, gospel-centered answer to this question. 3. WHO ARE WE IN LIGHT OF THAT? What does the text say about our identity? God has always been working to save "a people for his own possession." (1 Peter 2:9) Throughout the Bible, note the things that are true of God's people. This adds depth and richness to our understanding of who we are as New Covenant believers. For example, the Levitical priests were anointed and set apart for special service to God. Now, we are all anointed with God's Spirit (2 Cor. 1:21-22), and, because of Jesus, are all a part of God's "royal priesthood," set apart for special service to God. 4. HOW DO WE LIVE? In light of all of this, how do it change the way we live? When reading the Bible, we almost always start with the question, "How does this apply to my life?" But rightly motivated, gospel-centered action flows out of an understanding of who God is, what he's done, and who we are in light of God's character and work. Rather than starting with this question, end with it. And then, take action! Jesus warns against being merely a hearer of his word but not a doer (Mt. 7:24-27). The gospel motivates and empowers us to live in an entirely new way.

August 16, 2020 Click here for today's text: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans+11&version=GW FOUR QUESTIONS Each time we read the Bible we can come to it, depending on the Holy Spirit to teach us and shape us. When we come to the Bible, the Spirit is teaching and reminding us of the gospel. Here are four simple questions that have helped people see, understand, and remember the gospel as we read the Bible. 1. Who is God? What does the text say about the character and nature of God? The Bible is God's story so we begin by asking how His character and nature are revealed in what we're reading. Look for specific references to His attributes: holy, eternal, all-powerful, all-knowing, unchanging, etc. 2. What Has He Done? What does the text say about the work of God? God's work throughout all of human history is diverse and magnificent, and the person and work of Jesus is revealed on every page of the Bible. He is the hero and main character. Look for references to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, either through foreshadowing, prophecy, or through the New Testament story of Jesus' earthly life and the establishment of His church. 3. Who Are We in Light of That Truth? What does the text say about our identity? God has always been working to save “a people for His own possession” (1 Peter 2:9). Throughout the Bible, not the things that are true about God's people. 4. How Do We Live in Light of That Truth? How does this change the way we live? Rightly motivated, gospel-centered action flows out of an understanding of who God is, what He's done, and who we are in light of God's character and work. Now take action! Jesus warns against being merely hearers of His Word but not doers. The four questions come from Growing in Christ Together by Justin Kuravackal, Abe Meysenburg, Jeff Vanderstelt, and Brad Watson. © 2018 by Saturate Publishing QUESTIONS FOR DAILY REFLECTION 1. Where did I experience God's presence today? Where did I see Him working? Look back on the events of the day in the company of the Holy Spirit. The day may seem confusing to you—a blur, a jumble, a muddle. Ask God to bring clarity and understanding. 2. What happened today that brought me joy? What am I grateful for? Walk through your day in the presence of God and note its joys and delights. Focus on the day's highlights and gifts. Pay attention to small things. God is in the details. 3. What emotions did I experience today? Where was I at my best? My worst? Reflect on the feelings you experienced during the day. What is God saying through these feelings? God will most likely show you some ways that you fell short. Make note of these sins and faults. But look deeply for other implications. Does a feeling of frustration perhaps mean that God wants you consider a new direction in some area of your work? Are you concerned about a friend? Perhaps you should reach out to him/her in some way. 4. What things or people, from today, do I want to lift to God now? What do I need to give Him praise for? What do I need to ask for His forgiveness for? Ask the Holy Spirit to direct you to something during the day that God thinks is particularly important. Look at it. Pray about it—whether intercession, praise, repentance, or gratitude. 5. With the guidance of the Spirit, what is one way I can improve tomorrow? Seek God's guidance for tomorrow. Ask him for help and understanding. Pray for hope.
