Pastor Joey McLaughlin delivers a powerful message on the cross of Jesus and what it means to truly surrender your whole heart to God. Through Hebrews 12, Romans 5, Ephesians 2, and Colossians 2, this sermon explores how the cross is more than a religious symbol — it is the center of the Christian faith, where sin was defeated, freedom was purchased, and God demonstrated His love for humanity. Pastor Joey unpacks the seriousness of sin, the reality of spiritual numbness, and the life-changing truth that Jesus didn't just die for the world in general — He died personally, intentionally, and lovingly for you. This message is a call to stop going through the motions, remember the power of the gospel, and experience the freedom, forgiveness, healing, and new life that only Jesus can give. Whether you've followed Jesus for years or are still searching for hope, this sermon will challenge you to see the cross with fresh eyes and respond wholeheartedly to the love of God.

In Pastor Joey McLaughlin's sermon “Break the Jar,” part of the Half-Hearted series, he challenges believers to confront the reality of spiritual heart disease—the true reason many people drift from faith. Drawing from Luke 7 and the story of the sinful woman with the alabaster jar, Pastor Joey contrasts empty religious routine with authentic, wholehearted devotion. While the Pharisee represents outward religion without intimacy, the woman models radical love by pouring out her most valuable possession at Jesus' feet. The message emphasizes that Jesus is after our hearts above all else, and real transformation happens when we recognize the depth of our forgiveness and respond with complete surrender. “Breaking the jar” becomes a powerful metaphor for laying down everything—our pride, possessions, and reputation—to pursue a deep, passionate relationship with Jesus. This sermon calls Christians to move beyond half-hearted faith into bold, extravagant worship and total devotion to Christ.

This episode features a conversation with Joey Sherrard about his new book The Augustinian Pastor, exploring how the life and theology of Augustine can shape modern pastoral ministry. Drawing from his own journey—especially rediscovering Augustine during COVID—Sherrard highlights how Augustine's work as a hands-on pastor was itself the outworking of and context in which he did his theological reflection. Key themes include the importance of pastoral friendship, the ongoing struggle with pride and sin, and the cultivation of humility through dependence on God. Pastors should see their ordinary work not as a barrier to theological depth, but as the very place where rich, enduring theology is formed.

In this episode of Digging Deeper, we sit down with Joey, our Next Steps Pastor, to hear more of his story—how he came to faith, the unexpected path that led him into ministry, and what it's looked like to keep saying “yes” to God along the way.Pastor Joey talks about the message from this past Sunday and shares honestly about obedience—how it often feels more like sacrifice than risk—and how real peace isn't found when everything works out, but when you trust God in the middle of uncertainty.

What is God calling you to—and what's holding you back from saying yes?As we close out our Risk Theology series, Pastor Joey brings a powerful message on the risk of obedience, walking through Joshua 3 and what it really looks like to follow God into the unknown. Because discovering your purpose isn't just about clarity—it's about courage.Through the story of the Israelites crossing the Jordan, we're reminded that faith often requires movement before understanding. That obedience can feel like sacrifice. And that the steps we're most hesitant to take may become the very moments that mark God's faithfulness in our lives.

This message from Pastor Joey is part of the series “A Good, Messy, Beautiful Life,” a journey through the book of Ecclesiastes exploring where the good life is really found. In Ecclesiastes 9, we're confronted with a sobering truth: no matter who we are—rich or poor, powerful or ordinary—everyone dies. Yet instead of leading us to despair, Scripture shows how remembering our mortality can actually free us to live more fully. In a world full of uncertainty, Ecclesiastes calls us to embrace the gifts God has given—joy, relationships, meaningful work, and everyday moments of beauty—and to live gratefully, intentionally, and with purpose while we still have breath.
