Today we read the epic story of how David defeats Goliath, a giant Philistine warrior. Fr. Mike points out that David's heroic courage in this battle came from David's faithfulness to God and to the small tasks entrusted to him as a shepherd. We learn that when we are faithful and courageous in small matters, we can face the giants in our bigger battles. Today's readings are 1 Samuel 17 and Psalm 12. People use words to destroy others and lift themselves up. What does God think about that?

In a day when words are used to confuse, distort, manipulate, and misdirect, hope is found in the eternal, never-changing word of God and His faithfulness to keep His word to every generation. The foundation of the Christian faith is that God is truth, and the Bible is His inspired inerrant word. Every believer is called to believe in faith and stand firm in God's truth. Psalm 12 teaches three requirements for standing firm in God's truth.

This week is our last Psalm... for THIS summer. We will take close look at Psalm 12 and ask what is has to teach us about a lot of things, including that sticky old subject of Politics. Don't worry, there will be no actual political candidates or issues discussed, but more about why politics creates such a sinking feeling in most of our guts. For this reason, I even think a friend feeling a bit beaten down by the election season or someone really anxious about it could benefit from Sunday's message. At least I think so... Hard to say for sure ;) * CONNECT CARD -- https://siderischurch.com/connectcard * MAKE A BIG DECISION -- https://siderischurch.com/baptism * GOSPEL RESOURCES -- https://siderischurch.com/resources
Psalm 12 teaches us what to do when, as Christians, we feel alone *in* and encompassed *by* the world.

Welcome to Day 2428 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 12:1-8 Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2428 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2428 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. In today's Wisdom Nugget, I will guide you through the vast landscapes of biblical wisdom. Today, we are going to delve into Psalm 12. This psalm, attributed to David, speaks to the heart of human struggles with deceit, oppression, and the power of God's words. As we read Psalm 12:1-8 from the New Living Translation, we'll uncover profound insights about the integrity and trustworthiness of God in contrast to human deceit. Let's embark on this journey together! Psalm 12:1-8 (NLT): 1 Help, O Lord, for the godly are fast disappearing! The faithful have vanished from the earth! 2 Neighbors lie to each other, speaking with flattering lips and deceitful hearts. 3 May the Lord cut off their flattering lips and silence their boastful tongues. 4 They say, “We will lie to our hearts' content. Our lips are our own—who can stop us?” 5 The Lord replies, “I have seen violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they have longed for me to do.” 6 The Lord's promises are pure, like silver refined in a furnace, purified seven times over. 7 Therefore, Lord, we know you will protect the oppressed, preserving them forever from this lying generation, 8 even though the wicked strut about, and evil is praised throughout the land. The Cry for Help: David begins Psalm 12 with an urgent plea for help: “Help, O Lord, for the godly are fast disappearing! The faithful have vanished from the earth!” (verse 1). This opening sets a tone of desperation and concern for the state of society. David observes a troubling decline in godliness and faithfulness, which leads him to cry out to God. David's lament highlights a timeless issue: the erosion of moral integrity in society. He feels the weight of living in a world where the righteous are becoming scarce, and it seems like those who live faithfully are vanishing. This cry resonates with us today, as we often witness similar challenges in our own world. The Prevalence of Deceit: In verses 2-4, David describes the nature of the deceit he sees around him: “Neighbors lie to each other, speaking with flattering lips and deceitful hearts. May the Lord cut off their flattering lips and silence their boastful tongues. They say, ‘We will lie to our hearts' content. Our lips are our own—who can stop us?'” David points out the widespread dishonesty and flattery among people. Neighbors lie to each other, indicating a breakdown in trust and integrity within the community. The mention of flattering lips and deceitful hearts suggests that the deceit is not only prevalent but also deeply ingrained in the way people interact with one another. David's prayer for the Lord to cut off flattering lips and silence boastful tongues shows his desire for divine intervention. He is aware that human efforts alone are insufficient to address the pervasive deceit. The bold declaration of the deceitful, “We...

Why do our words matter? Why do our words matter? Today, Emma Dotter talks through Psalm 12, where David is crying out to God for help because he sees how people are hurting one another with their words. As Proverbs 18:21 says, the tongue has the power of life and death, which means our words can either tear people down or build them up. Maybe you personally have been hurt by the words of others, whether careless or intentional. We can find hope knowing that God sent His Son, the Word made flesh to dwell among us and bring life abundant to those who trust in Him as Savior and Lord. Take some time to reflect on how Psalm 12 encourages us to be careful with our words. Additional Scripture Referenced: Proverbs 6:16-19, a lying tongue is an abomination to the Lord Proverbs 12:22, “lying lips are detestable to the Lord” John 8:44, the devil “is a liar and the father of lies” Revelation 21:8 Proverbs 18:21, “death and life are in the power of the tongue” Colossians 4:6, “let your speech always be gracious” John 3:16 Proverbs 15:1-2, “a soft answer turns away wrath” John 1:14, “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids?
