On Jan. 15, 2009, U.S. Airways Flight 1549 took off from LaGuardia Airport on its way to Charlotte. That was 12 years ago, hard to believe. More at www.CooperandAnthony.com
One hundred and fifty five people boarded US Airways Flight 1549 at La Guardia Airport New York on January 15th, 2009 destined for Charlotte, North Carolina. Those same one hundred and fifty five people left that aircraft in the middle of the Hudson River three and a half minutes after take off, and what transpired in between is remarkable. What is considered by many as the 'Miracle on the Hudson' is explained by my guest Emma Sophina. The only foreign national on that flight that day, Australian, Emma recalls the lifetime of memories that she lived before, during and after that day that has now made aviation history. Captain Sully Sullenberger has been applauded for what he achieved that day, in saving all of those lives, but it may also be his actions after the landing that will stay in the memories of many however.
David J. Goodwin’s book “Left Bank of the Hudson: Jersey City and the Artists of 111 1st Street” is a window into the demographic, political, and socio-economic changes experienced in Jersey City over the last 30 years. As a Jersey City resident, Goodwin applied his knowledge of the city’s rich history of political malfeasance and corruption—including how auspicious plans for a waterfront arts enclave were repeatedly bungled by a provincial-minded city administration. In this installment of “Leonard Lopate at Large” on WBAI, David J. Goodwin discusses “Left Bank of the Hudson” and the history of this now-defunct artists' space that inspired him to tell its tale.
