In this episode of Future of Film Podcast, we're joined by Fiona Gillies and Mahesh Ramachandra, co-founders of SMASH — the innovative platform that's transforming how creators connect with industry decision-makers. SMASH is rethinking the pitching process from the ground up—offering creators a structured, accessible space to build and share their projects, while helping commissioners and buyers discover the stories they're truly looking for. In this conversation, Fiona and Mahesh share the origin story of Smash, explore how AI and smart data are shaping the future of development, and offer practical advice for filmmakers looking to sharpen their pitches and navigate the industry with confidence. We also discuss the art (and pain) of writing a great logline, how to stand out in a crowded marketplace, and why the future of pitching is all about transparency, connection, and creator empowerment. This episode was recorded as part of Future of Film Africa 2024 in partnership with Sèmè City of the Republic of Benin. About Fiona Gillies - Indie Producer & SMASH co-founder Fiona has produced award winning features and shorts.  The Beat Beneath my Feet was in competition in the Berlinale, and her debut feature City Slacker was nominated for a BIFA. About Mahesh Ramachandra – Co-founder / CPO Mahesh is a digital product expert with 25 years of experience building and operating B2B SaaS and B2C entertainment services around the world. On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are falling in love with our respective Hollywood crushes, and somehow it's actually working out. We're talking about the Roger Michell film from 1999, Notting Hill.If you had told me that I could have met a charming and beautiful actress just by working in a bookstore, I would have tried a lot harder to get a job at Borders all those years ago. But no, old me had to be obsessed with just hanging out in their coffee shop and browsing through nonsense all day. Had I been better prepared, I wouldn't have missed such a guaranteed opportunity so hard.It makes one wonder where I would be today had I thought different. I'd definitely be out of a job because R.I.P. Borders. On the other hand, would I ever have to worry about work again if my partner was one of the biggest stars in the world?Hindsight is always 20–20. I think the moral of this story is that we should all be open to new opportunities. If something seems ridiculous or far-fetched at the time, remind yourself not to write it off. You never know when you could fall in love with your own Anna Scott.Recorded  September 22, 2022Links to Stuff We MentionedNotting Hill (1999) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Beavis and Butt-head (TV Series 1993–2011) — The Movie Database (TMDB)You've Got Mail (1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Rhys Ifans — The Movie Database (TMDB)Demi Moore — The Movie Database (TMDB)Pretty Woman (1990) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Pelican Brief (1993) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Erin Brockovich (2000) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Jim Carrey — The Movie Database (TMDB)Garden State (2004) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Will Friedle — The Movie Database (TMDB)Amber Heard — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Equalizer (2014) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Ocean's Eleven (2001) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Bullet Train (2022) — The Movie Database (TMDB)A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Emily Mortimer — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Matrix (1999) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Sleepless in Seattle (1993) — The Movie Database (TMDB)50 First Dates (2004) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts! Our Instagram profile! Our Twitter profile!

Canada's health care system is in crisis, particularly when it comes to nursing. The Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario (WeRPN), representing the voices of over 55,000 registered practical nurses (RPNs), is raising the alarm after a new survey has found patient care is being critically compromised due to staffing shortages and the standardization of unsafe workloads. Dianne Martin, CEO of WeRPN joins me to discuss. When's the last time you had a self-worth check up? Jennifer John from the Sacred Space thinks this is is a check up we should do as routinely as we see our family doctor or therapist. A great way to stop self-sabotaging and move yourself out of a rut, a self-worth check up is easy to do and well worth the reward. Jennifer shares how in today's interview. Anne Brodie is here with entertainment, and you will absolutely not want to miss Ron Howard's Thirteen Lives that takes us inside the harrowing story of thirteen soccer players and their coach trapped underground in a cave in Thailand in 2018 and the incredible rescue that followed. Plus she has Prey on Disney+ which is the origin story for Predator, and the formulaic but charming Wedding Season on Netflix. Grandparents in 2022 are not your regular grandparents, they're cool grandparents. Kathy Buckworth has moved from parenting expert to grand parenting expert with her show Go To Grandma that explores different aspects of being a modern grandparent from respecting your kids' way of parenting to finding yourself once you have an empty nest. If there is one thing the pandemic has made crystal clear to people is that life is too short to be in a job you're not happy at. How do you know when you should choose your mental health over you job? Roxanne Francis is here to help. A trained psychotherapist with more than 12 years of experience in the mental health field, Roxanne joins me to discuss what you should be looking for. Finally, Anne Brodie closes out the show with an interview with renowned and beloved British actorJim Broadbent. Broadbent stars in Roger Michell's The Duke, the true - and highly entertaining story of disabled old age pensioner Kempton Bunton who, in 1961, stole Francisco Goya's portrait of The Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London and held it ransom as a political statement.

Then, Simon takes a look at The Duke, the final film from director Roger Michell, starring Broadbent as the real-life pensioner who fronted the British courts for heisting a Goya painting in protest of the UK government. Dog is now in cinemas and The Duke arrives on big screens at the end of March.

CINEMA! E ANCORA CINEMA!

Kat Coiro's new MARRY ME is a rarity in 2022: a major-studio romcom released to theaters (okay, and Peacock), that features recognizable stars and tries to honor the genre without apologies or winky self-awareness. It's a modern yet old-fashioned romcom that relies on audiences' affection for its genre, and in particular its incandescent star, Jennifer Lopez, to smooth over its rough patches, which we poke at — affectionately — in the second half of our star-crossed romcom pairing. We're joined once again by special guest Scott Meslow, author of the new book FROM HOLLYWOOD WITH LOVE, to discuss how MARRY ME works through the romcom formula, and where it stumbles, before bringing Roger Michell's NOTTING HILL back in to consider how both films fit their respective ideas about celebrity, infidelity, and humility into the genre's well-established storytelling structure. Despite a very 2022 premise, the new MARRY ME acts in many ways like a romantic comedy from the genre's late-20th-century heyday, from its star-driven nature to its central fantasy of a romance between a world-famous celebrity and an everyday schlub. That particular combination pointed us in the direction of one of the era's romcom highlights, 1999's NOTTING HILL, starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant as characters with deep ties to their actors' respective personas. This week we look back at the film that cemented Richard Curtis as a romcom auteur, with an assist from someone who literally wrote the book on the genre — Scott Meslow, author of the new “From Hollywood with Love: The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of the Romantic Comedy” — to consider how NOTTING HILL figures into the careers of both its screenwriter and its stars, what director Roger Michell brings to the equation, and the film's mixed-blessing view of stardom. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about NOTTING HILL, MARRY ME, or anything else in the world of film, romcom or otherwise, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net.
