In this episode, we speak with Amaury Barberot, CEO of Expliseat, about how the company's innovative lightweight seating technology is delivering immediate sustainability benefits for airlines while improving their bottom line.Barberot discusses:Expliseat's revolutionary aircraft seat design made from carbon fibre and titanium that is 30% lighter than comparable products, saving approximately 1,200 kilograms when retrofitted on an Airbus A320 or Boeing 737.The immediate environmental impact of their lightweight seats, which deliver a 6% CO2 emission reduction per passenger without requiring airlines to wait for future technology developments. How the weight reduction focuses on the "invisible parts" of the seat, preserving passenger comfort while still delivering sustainability benefits. The company's circular manufacturing approach, which recycles industrial waste from seat frames to create new components like tray tables, further reducing their environmental footprint.Their recent expansion into the rail industry, where their lightweight technology helps train operators overcome axle weight limitations to improve passenger amenities or increase capacity.Barberot emphasises that Expliseat represents one of the rare sustainability solutions where "CSO and CFO do not fight," highlighting how their technology aligns environmental and economic objectives for airlines across different regions and business models. If you LOVED this episode, you'll also love the conversation we had with Dr. Mark Hiller, CEO at RECARO Aircraft Seating and Recaro Holding. In this bonus episode Nick talks to Jeff Chatfield. Jeff serves as the Executive Chairman of Avation PLC and played a pivotal role in its founding and development. Throughout his career, he has held management and directorial positions in various companies across sectors such as the airline industry, data distribution, electronics, investment, broadcasting, and manufacturing. He holds both a Bachelor of Engineering and a Master of Engineering Science from the University of Western Australia. Additionally, he is a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Directors. Nick and Jeff discus the company's recent half-year results and market position. Jeff highlights Avation's strong financial performance, including increased revenue and reduced net debt. He also discusses the company's aircraft leasing portfolio, noting a recent acquisition of an Etihad-operated Airbus A320. Despite these positive results, Avation's share price remains undervalued at 50% of net asset value (NAV), which Jeff attributes to investor unfamiliarity with the aircraft leasing sector and the company's London Stock Exchange listing. He suggests that moving to a higher-tier market segment could help attract more investors. The conversation also touches on Avation's debt structure and potential refinancing opportunities. Jeff explains that a $330 million bond maturing in 2026 could be refinanced as early as 2025, potentially lowering interest costs and improving cash flow. He emphasizes the importance of dividends to investors and notes strong shareholder support for past dividend payouts. Looking ahead, Avation aims to continue growing its fleet and improving shareholder value, with strategies such as increasing investor engagement and possibly integrating with a larger leasing business for better financing terms.

Picture this: you're nestled cozily in your window seat on a jet airliner when suddenly, you notice weird white spray coming out the back of the wing. Is something wrong with the plane? Are you going to crash? No need to panic! At this moment, the pilots are performing a standard procedure called fuel dumping. Btw, it's by no means cheap. For example, a mid-sized Boeing 737-300 uses about two and a half tons of fuel per hour of travel. The price of jet fuel is more than $600 per ton, so that means that while flying such a plane, you spend approximately $1,500 per flight hour. So why do they do that? Aviation News Spirit to Furlough More Than 300 Pilots as Losses Mount Spirit Airlines is experiencing financial difficulty and a second-quarter net loss of $158 million. More red ink is expected for the third quarter. Last month the airline furloughed 186 pilots and plans to do the same for 330 more pilots effective January 31, 2025. (Spirit has 3,500 pilots.) About 120 captains are to be downgraded. Spirit says it will sell 23 of its Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft next year. That's a fleet reduction of about 11 percent. On 14 February 1990, an Airbus A320-231 registered as VT-EPN, crashed onto a golf course while attempting to land at Bangalore, killing 92 of 146 people on board. Tulsi Vagjian, aged 10 at the time, survived. Her parents and brother did not. In an interview with The Guardian, she shared that she stayed in hospital for nearly five months where she was treated for severe burns and skin grafts. She then went to live with her grandparents, on the same street as her family home. Although she says the loss of her parents was often talked about, it was not until later, when she was about 13, that “it suddenly dawned on me that they were not returning from India”. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2021/oct/06/tulsi-vagjiani-the-woman-who-lost-her-family-in-a-plane-crash-and-found-the-beauty-in-her-burns

AVIATION NEWS US Transportation Chief Dashes Hopes of Quick Boeing Max 9 Jet Return US Transportation Secretary announced that Boeing's Max 9 airplanes will remain grounded until they are deemed safe to fly by regulators, dashing hopes for a quick return to service. The secretary emphasized that safety is the top priority and that no one should be rushed in the process. Boeing is under scrutiny after a door plug ejected from a 737 Max 9 in mid-flight, resulting in a hole in the plane. Inspections and fixes are being conducted to ensure the safety of every plane delivered to airlines. Undamaged plug exit on Alaska Max 9 had fasteners tightened during assembly During the assembly of an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9, Boeing personnel tightened six loose fasteners on the fuselage structure around the plug exit opposite the one that later failed. The work was done at Boeing's factory in Renton, Washington, after the fuselage was shipped from supplier Spirit AeroSystems' factory in Kansas. While it is unclear why the fasteners were loose, this indicates that Boeing paid attention to discrepant components during assembly. The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into Boeing to determine if the completed products conformed to approved design and were safe for operation. Cathay to probe year-end cancellations, as it admits it ‘underestimated' pilot shortage issue Cathay Pacific has admitted that it underestimated the number of reserve pilots needed during the year-end period, which resulted in numerous flight cancellations. The airline's chief operations and service delivery officer, Alex McGowan, is leading a task force to identify and resolve the underlying issues that caused these operational problems. The cancellations in January were necessary due to a lack of adequate reserve levels, and further flights had to be canceled in order to stabilize the current operation. Cathay Pacific has faced scrutiny from the Hong Kong government and its pilot union, which blames the airline's job cuts in 2020 for the current pilot shortage. McGowan has vowed to improve the situation and ensure high-quality services and reliability for customers. SAA's historical mess of financial losses, broken airline operations finally revealed South African Airways (SAA) has suffered financial losses of R28.9 billion since 2018, despite receiving R38.1 billion in bailouts from the government during that same period. The airline has been dependent on taxpayer-funded bailouts since 2011 and its financial results for the past four years, which were only recently tabled in Parliament, reveal a dysfunctional airline that was not financially stable, with its biggest expenses being leasing aircraft, the maintenance of aircraft, fuel, and employee remuneration. SAA was placed in business rescue in December 2021 and the recently tabled results show that it is still dependent on government support to cover expenses that exceed its revenue. Ural Airlines pays rent to farmer after its Airbus A320 lands in wheat field Ural Airlines has agreed to pay a farmer around $11,000 as compensation for having to rent his land for the commercial jet to stay there since September. The Airbus A320 had suffered a loss of hydraulic system and decided to switch to Novosibirsk Airport, but it ran out of fuel before reaching the airport and made an emergency landing on the farmer's wheat field. The aircraft is preventing the planting of wheat, resulting in losses for the farmer. Ural Airlines has not yet decided how to remove the A320 from the wheat field. Are some people simply more cut out to take on big responsibilities, where lives are at stake, or is it actually just good training? In this episode of Looking Outside, we explore the mindset and skills of preparedness in Flying with commercial airline pilot, Ricardo Nunes. Being responsible for hundreds of people on the plane is not something Ricardo takes for granted. While many of us would find that extreme level of responsibility crippling, Ricardo says the confidence comes from understanding the weight of the responsibility, and taking that seriously by training for the worst. Ricardo describes how preparation has been pivotal to surviving challenges faced in his aviation career and prior to that, before he crossed to ‘the dark side', when he flew Search and Rescue helicopters for the Portuguese Air Force. It's all in the training, Ricardo stresses, as while the scenarios faced are different, the way to think through them is the same.Jo and Ricardo also explore the intersection of flying and foresight, in how anticipatory thinking allows you to ‘fly ahead of the plane'. Explaining that the mindset is similar in the military as in foresight, particularly in leveraging methods like scenario planning, Ricardo says constantly testing out different pathways in flight means he is prepared for unforeseen situations so that when a tough decision has to be made, its already been thought-through.While the life of a pilot may seem both illustrious and solitary, the success of the airline industry and its crew is entirely dependent on being humble and highly communicative. Ricardo explains how airlines strictly follow a “just culture”; where decisions, omissions and actions are reported or called out without reprimand. It is only by showing, not hiding, mistakes that the airline industry maintains a culture of trust and builds on knowledge that leads to its incredible safety record. Ricardo also speaks to how this kind of approach in pushing yourself into complex and challenging situations, and consistently training for them, makes you a better person … one who is less prone to panic in the moment, and one who can enjoy a unique life (for example, where you get the travel the world). Train hard and fight easy, as they say in the military.--To look outside, Ricardo says to talk to someone different; someone who doesn't do what you do for a living or doesn't think the same way. Sometimes you need an outsider view to help you think outside the box. --Ricardo Nunes is a former Portuguese Air Force pilot turned commercial airline pilot with a passion for foresight and scenario planning. Ricardo began his career in 2005 in the Portuguese Air Force, where he flew various fixed and rotary-wing aircraft, including the DHC-1 Chipmunk, TB-30 Epsilon, Allouette 3, and EH101 Merlin. He flew numerous Search and Rescue (SAR) missions, eventually becoming a SAR captain in 2011.In 2013, Ricardo transitioned to the civilian world, where he now logs thousands of flight hours aboard Airbus A320/321 aircraft, connecting Lisbon to destinations in Europe, Africa, and the Americas with over 5,000 flight hours under his belt. But flying is not Ricardo's only passion. He is also a founding member of the Portuguese Foresight Association, a non-profit organization established by like-minded individuals to promote foresight and future studies in Portuguese society. Despite his busy schedule, Ricardo remains true to his Lisbon roots, where he was born and raised. He holds a Master of Science in Air Transport Management from City, University of London, and post-graduates degrees in Foresight, Strategy, and Innovation from the Lisbon School of Economics (ISEG), and in Management from the NOVA School of Business and Economics. He has never lost his love for flying or his...

On this day (January 15th) in 2009, Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger landed US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River after the Airbus A320 serving the flight struck a flock of birds shortly after take-off from New York, losing all engine power. Unable to reach any airport for an emergency landing due to their low altitude, Sully and co-pilot Jeffrey Skiles glided the plane to a ditching in the Hudson River off Midtown Manhattan. All 155 people on board were rescued by nearby boats, with only a few serious injuries. What an incredilbe aviation story. Follow Amy Tango Charlie on Twitter: https://twitter.com/atoocpodcast
