Episode 64 Doe ID 'Beth Doe' Evelyn ColonWhen a dismembered body was found in 3 suitcases along the Lehigh River in Carbon County in December, 1976, it began a decades long mystery. When investigators combed the area where the body had been found, they also discovered the body of a fetus; that of an almost full term baby girl.An ME concluded that the body belonged to a young woman who was in her teens or early 20s, and that the baby found nearby was hers. The woman who was dubbed 'Beth Doe' had been shot and strangled prior to being dismembered, and according to the ME, it had happened just prior to the remains being discovered. With no ID to go on, police searched for missing women and girls who fit Beth Doe's description in PA and neighboring states, and despite clues to work with including very speicifc dental history, they came up empty. Beth Doe and her baby girl were laid to rest in a local cemetery, and for decades, local people visited their grave to pay their respects. Finally, advances in DNA, and genealogy allowed investigators to finally learn the identity of Beth Doe. Her name was Evelyn Colon, and she went missing from Jersey City, NJ in 1976 when she was just 15 years old. When her family was tracked down, they told investigators how she had suddenly vanished after becoming pregnant. They also were able to give them the name of her baby's father who she had lived with prior to vanishing; Luis Sierra. Sierra had sent a letter to Evelyn's family after she vanished saying she was okay and living her life. In reality, she had been found dead by this point alongside their baby in Pennsylvania. Sierra was arrested in New York where he had been living, and charged with murder. He is currently awaiting trial.Beth Doe' finally has her name again; it's Evelyn Colon, and this is her story. A Magician, a 2nd basemen (for the New York Yankees of course), a Meteorologist… all career options that author Kevin Powell considered, but what finally stuck was the act and art of writing. The library is where he fell in love… with books, art, music, cultural diversity, and anything he could get his hands on. Kevin believes that the stories we tell are the history of this country, and his passion for writing and passing along those stories is a form of activism that will keep voices from being silenced and forgotten. Kevin shares with Jeanne how his hunger for learning will never be satiated, how the illustrative life of Ernest Hemingway gave him his lightbulb career moment, how absorbing the work of writers such as Toni Morrison, bell hooks, Audrey Lorde, and Maya Angelou (to name a few) changed his perspective on defining manhood, the joy and nostalgia he still finds in gospel music, how speaking publicly can be liberating, and why it's important for you to discover your own definition of success rather than chase someone else's. About Kevin:As a poet, journalist, essayist/blogger, public speaker, civil and human rights activist, filmmaker, and the author of 16 book, Kevin Powell is one of the most acclaimed political, cultural, and literary voices in America. Kevin is a native of Jersey City, New Jersey currently residing in Brooklyn, New York. As an activist, he is the president and co-founder of BK Nation, a new national, progressive, multicultural organization focused on such issues as education, civic engagement, leadership training, health and wellness, social media, arts and culture, and job and small business creation. Kevin was also a Democratic candidate for Congress in Brooklyn, New York, his adopted hometown, in 2008 and 2010. He was a senior writer of VIBE magazine from 1992-1996. As a pop culture curator, Kevin produced the first exhibit on the history of hip-hop in America at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, which toured America and overseas. As a humanitarian, Kevin's work includes local, national and international initiatives to end violence against women and girls (including a very well-regarded appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show highlighting domestic violence); and he has done extensive philanthropic and relief work, ranging from Hurricane Katrina to earthquakes in Haiti and Japan, to Superstorm Sandy in New York, to his annual holiday party and clothing drive for the homeless every December since 9/11. His newest books Grocery Shopping with My Mother and The Kevin Powell Reader: Essential Writings and Conversations are both available now.IG: @kevinpowellbrooklynTwitter: @kevin_powell

In this episode, we discuss the impact of 9/11 on the pharmaceutical industry,  role of medical science liaisons, and  importance of establishing uniformity in medical affairs competencies with Will Soliman, CEO of the Accreditation Council for Medical Affairs (ACMA). We  explore  challenges of implementing standardization, role of PBMs in drug pricing, and  potential for unethical behavior in the industry.(0:10) - 9/11 Impact on Pharma(7:33) - Medical Science Liaisons(12:13) - Establishing Uniformity in Medical Affairs Competencies(17:58) - Barriers to Standardization(21:13) - PBMs and Drug Pricing(0:10) - 9/11 Impact on Pharma In this episode, I speak with Will Soliman, CEO of the Accreditation Council for Medical Affairs (ACMA), about his background, the influence of his father, and the role of the pharmaceutical industry. Growing up in Jersey City, Will was encouraged by his parents to pursue a career in STEM, leading him to major in biochemistry in college. He discusses the impact of 9/11 on immigration policies and scientific output, as well as his early career as a pharmaceutical sales rep before transitioning to a medical science liaison role.(7:33) - Medical Science LiaisonsIn this chapter, we delve into the role of a medical science liaison (MSL) and the transition to managing MSLs. MSLs are the "Navy SEALs" of pharmaceutical companies, responsible for educating doctors about disease states and various products. They often have advanced degrees, such as MDs, PhDs, or pharmacy degrees. The conversation also highlights the move towards a more formal medical affairs function within pharmaceutical companies in the last couple of decades. The discussion then shifts to the entrepreneurial journey of founding a specialty pharmacy called US Pharmacy Lab, focusing on personalized service and compounding for high-end customers.(12:13) - Establishing Uniformity in Medical Affairs CompetenciesIn this chapter, we explore the origins of the Accreditation Council for Medical Affairs (ACMA) and the need for a uniform competency standard in the medical affairs industry. The lack of consistency and potential compliance nightmares within pharmaceutical companies led to the creation of the ACMA, which now works with around 200 pharmaceutical companies to provide board certification and establish uniformity within organizations. We also discuss the importance of maintaining the integrity of the medical affairs profession and ensuring that medical affairs professionals have the proper competencies to interpret and present data accurately'(17:58) - Barriers to Standardization (3 Minutes)We discuss the challenges faced in implementing standardization in the pharmaceutical industry, including resistance from the "old guard" who feel their existing qualifications are sufficient. Despite this, there has been an overwhelmingly positive response to the push for standardization, as it is seen as vital to the industry's future. We also touch on the implications of the Inflation and Reduction Act, which requires drug manufacturers to pay the federal government if their prices increase faster than inflation. This could impact innovation, favor biologics over small molecule drugs, and increase the use of biosimilars in the market'(21:13) - PBMs and Drug Pricing In this chapter, we examine the role of pharmacy benefit managers and the potential for unethical behavior in the pharmaceutical industry. We also introduce reportpharma.org, a new site allowing healthcare professionals to report unethical practices. Host David E. Williams is president of healthcare strategy consulting firm Health Business Group. Produced by Dafna Williams.

Dr. Arielle Faden is a pediatric dentist and practice owner out of Jersey City, which is a large metro area near New York City. She was a guest on the podcast almost two years ago when she talked about practicing as an associate in a large city like New York. Since that time, she has gone through the journey of partnering with her boss to become a 50/50 practice owner. We discuss how there's a lack of podcast content for dentists in these situations, but that partnerships are a great opportunity for dentists who aren't interested in either associating or going through the stresses of a scratch start. Some of the things Dr. Faden talks about: - How she knew that this office was the right fit for ownership - How they determined the value of the practice and purchase price - What did lending look like for this transaction - How did her income increase to cover the debt payment - How they structured the operating agreement to know who can buy what with company money, and how profits are split You can reach Arielle at ariellebethany@gmail.com

Eugene Campbell III didn't take the 'traditional' route to the professional game, but his route was unique and required a TON of dedication and hard work. In fact, Eugene didn't really truly care about his basketball career until the very end of his high school season, his SENIOR YEAR!!  From going to a JUCO (Junior College), to fighting his way into the roster and getting minutes, to going D3 and having to work his way the last two years to getting as much playing time as he could, to being a graduate assistant and learning the importance of putting work in the gym and film room, to now playing overseas, Eugene knows a lot about the sport.  His story is inspiring and my hope is that the athletes who listen, will be able to learn a thing or two. Just because your route or journey may look different than someone else's, doesn't mean you can't make it happen. So keep going and working on your craft, and you can achieve whatever you want!  If you'd like to learn more about Eugene's non-profit, you can check out: https://www.walkamilenourshoes.org/  From the website:  "Walk A Mile N Our Shoes is a 501c3 non-profit organization officially founded in April 2021 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Hour 1: For the first time since 1994, the Knicks, Nets, Rangers, Islanders and Devils are all in the playoffs. DeMar DeRozan's 9 year old daughter was screaming every time the Raptors took a free throw and it clearly affected them. Boomer doesn't want Julius Randle playing against the Cavs unless he's 100%. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with audio from the Islanders beating Montreal 4-2, putting them into the playoffs. The Mets beat the Padres and got HRs by Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor. The Mets head to the west coast and will play the A's tomorrow. The Yankees won in Cleveland again and Franchy Cordero hit another HR. Boomer thinks he's a good ‘scrap heap guy'. He wonders if the Mets have had a great ‘scrap heap guy' in the past. The Tampa Rays won their 12th straight game yesterday. Kyle Farmer of the Twins got hit in the face with a pitch and needed his teeth realigned. Coach Thibs gives us a brief update on Julius Randle. In the final segment of the hour, we have audio of DeMar DeRozan's daughter screaming as the Raptors came to the free throw line. And it appears the Islanders now have two mascots: the dragon and the fisherman. Gio finds Sparky the Dragon to be distracting and doesn't think it makes any sense.  Hour 2: Aaron Boone got tossed from the game in Cleveland yesterday because of a replay challenge review. They did get the call right, but there is a time limit for how long a team has to challenge and that's what pissed Boone off. The Yankees won so it's not a big deal, but the rules are the rules and should be enforced. We also talked about the Islanders making the playoffs and wondering if Boomer will show up for a game. He will not. Brandon Tierney texted Gio about the upcoming bike tour and he's concerned about his ‘balls'. Jerry returns for an update but first Boomer told us there was a naked man in front of the building today at 5am. The Yankees won in Cleveland and an umpire took a relay throw to the side of the head. Brandon Nimmo had himself a great day as the Mets beat the Padres. Edwin Diaz talked about potentially returning this season. He also said he would play in the WBC again if he has the chance. Immanuel Quickley cannot wait to get going against Cleveland on Saturday. DeMar DeRozan talked about his daughter screaming during the Raptors' free throws. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about the Jets most likely to get the maximum amount of prime time games.  Hour 3: Saquon Barkley will not be at voluntary workouts for the Giants because he doesn't have a long term deal. Gio wonders how far Saquon is willing to take this. Boomer said he loves Barkley but he unfortunately plays a position that is not really valued by NFL teams. There's also still a debate as to which QB will go #1 in the draft. Jerry returns for an update but first Gio tells us he hung out with Jerry and his business partner after the live show in Jersey City. The Mets beat the Padres and Pete Alonso had a HR. Edwin Diaz talked about potentially coming back this season. The Yankees beat the Guardians and Aaron Boone was tossed for arguing the way a call was reviewed. The Islanders clinched a playoff spot with their win last night. Immanuel Quickley is excited to start the series in Cleveland on Saturday. Jerry has isolated audio of DeMar DeRozan's daughter screaming while the Raptors were shooting free throws. In the final segment of the hour, Gio told us so many people reached out to help him with the logistics of getting from Long Island to MetLife for the Morgan Wallen Show.  Hour 4: The Twins and Angels are coming into town to face the Yankees and those two teams stink. Gio said it's ‘beef up time' for the Yankees. Gio can't wait to stuff his face in the Legends seats at a Yankees game. A caller wants to know if draft beer is back at Yankee Stadium. Jerry returns for an update but first we talked about an upcoming flag football game we are playing in. The Mets beat the Padres and now they head to the west coast. Pete Alonso thinks the Mets can really get going now. Franchy Cordero hit another HR for the Yanks as they beat Cleveland. Aaron Boone got tossed because he didn't like the way they reviewed a play in the game. The Islanders beat Montreal and get themselves into the playoffs. The Nets will play the 76'ers this week in the NBA playoffs. In the final segment of the show, we talked about MLB teams extending beer sales into the eighth inning because games are getting over quicker. But extending beer sales into later in the game, that leaves less time for people to sober up before driving home.

Franchy Cordero hit a HR for the Yankees and Jerry has the new John Sterling call, ‘you can bet the ranchy on Franchy'. Oneil Cruz of the Pirates broke his ankle on a slide and collision at the plate and then the benches cleared. The Tampa Rays won again and are now 9-0 to start the season.
