Today we are joined by César Brioso, author of the book Last Seasons in Havana: The Castro Revolution and the End of Professional Baseball In Cuba (University of Nebraska Press, 2019). Blending the love for baseball fans in Cuba had during the 1950s with the political upheaval that led to Fidel Castro's rise to power in 1959, Brioso weaves a fascinating tale. Brioso focuses on the last two seasons of the Havana Sugar Kings of the International League (1958-1959) and the last three seasons of the Cuban League (1958-1961). In the 1950s, Havana was a city teeming with rabid baseball fans, swanky hotels, luxurious casinos, and warm, tropical weather. Influential baseball men in Cuba like Bobby Maduro believed Havana was on the short list to earn a major league franchise when baseball expanded. But what happened politically signaled the death knell for those dreams. Castro may have been a big sports fan, but political events in Cuba would take “a sinister turn” as he and the Communists in his regime tightened their grip on the Caribbean island. Brioso's extensive research, plus more than 20 interviews with former players, Maduro's son, and even a man who spent a year as the batboy for the transplanted Sugar Kings in Jersey City, New Jersey, gives the reader a unique perspective about Cuba. Former major leaguers interviewed included Orlando Peña, Pedro Ramos, Cookie Rojas and Luis Tiant. Bob D'Angelo was a sports journalist and sports copy editor for more than three decades and is currently a digital national content editor for Cox Media Group. He received his master's degree in history from Southern New Hampshire University in May 2018. He is the author of Never Fear: The Life & Times of Forest K. In 2010 he was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame -- one of only three high school coaches ever to receive that honor. He began coaching at St. Anthony's High School in Jersey City in 1972 and his teams won 28 state high school championships, had 18 undefeated seasons, won nine consecutive championships, were four-time USA Today national champions, and he was a three-time USA Today National Coach of the Year. He finished with an amazing won-lost record of 1,185 victories and just 125 defeats and produced over 150 players to Division I basketball programs and coached six first-round NBA draft picks. He is the President of the People's Park Foundation, focused on regulation-sized athletic fields and a true community park for Jersey City, plus, in 2017 he founded the Hurley Family Foundation to continue his mission of developing children's potential in life through the game of basketball.

It was 1863. Edwin stood on a railroad platform in Jersey City. He watched as a young man was forced by crowds against a train car. The man dangerously fell into the crevice between the train and the platform. The train started to move. Edwin reached down and, at the last minute, pulled the man to safety. The saved man was Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln. Robert later wrote that his rescuer’s “face was of course well known to me,” because Edwin Booth was a famous actor. In fact, he was the brother of another actor—John Wilkes Booth—who would assassinate the president two years later. This historical oddity illustrates a reality for us. We don’t choose the family we’re born into. Perhaps our siblings or parents made wrong choices. Maybe we’re the ones who’ve made a mess of everything. But the Bible tells of God’s family plan: “those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God” (Romans 8:14). As His children, “we are [his] heirs” (v. 17). Amazingly, we’re invited to call him “Abba, Father” (v. 15). We may long wrestle with the dysfunctions of our earthly family. But we can take comfort that God has changed our spiritual heritage. He adopts us into His family. Most precious of all—He invites us to call him our Father.

Leonard Marshall is the oldest of seven children from the rural town of Franklin, Louisiana. Hegraduated from Franklin High School in 1979 and attended Louisiana State University (LSU). Heattended LSU from 1979 until he was drafted from LSU in the spring of 1983. Leonard Marshall was coached by legendary LSU coaches Jerry Stovall and Pete Jenkins. Leonard Marshall played in the NFL for 12 seasons. He was drafted in the Second Round of the1983 NFL Draft as a rising Junior at LSU by the New York Giants and played for most of his career in New York. After being drafted in 1983, he initially resided in Secaucus, New Jersey before residing in Jersey City, New Jersey. Leonard Marshall was coached by Hall of Fame Coach Bill Parcells and former NY Giants Defensive Coordinator and future Hall of Fame Coach Bill Belichick. During his tenure with the Giants, he was part of the “Big Blue Wrecking Crew”, won two Super Bowl rings (1986 & 1990) and was twice Named second-team All-Pro (1985 & 1986) and twice named to the Pro Bowl team (1985 & 1986). In September 2022, he was inducted into the New York Giants Ring of Honor and recognized for his work bringing awareness to CTE in professional football players. After football, Mr. Marshall attended Seton Hall University towards an MBA in Finance. He previously held his Series 7 and 63 licenses and worked for a number of years as a Registered Investment Advisor. In 2007, Leonard returned to Seton Hall, as a Professor of Finance and Sports Management. Leonard Marshall also accepted a seat on the Board of Directors for Louisiana State University's Diversity Board; and serves as a Board member for Carver Bank, Piketx.com, and the Concussion Legacy Foundation. He currently serves in the capacity of Outside Advisor for Moldaver Lee CohenRockefeller Global Family Office. He is currently mentoring an Autistic child in NJ. He has a daughter named Arianna and a stepson named Victor and a grandson. He often visits his home state of Louisiana. He is a fan of LSU and loves to visit LSU and its football program. We've had a bit of everything in addition to GO Fest this month, with GMAX Inteleon and Phantom Ruins keeping us busy last week, along with Remote Raiding in Paris. The game's pace doesn't care what is going on as the events are still coming in heavy. Jangmo-o Community Day and Yamper's Paw Prints and the recently updated Ancients Recovered will guide us right into Global, but there is plenty to unpack.Hyper Training has been announced as part of an Ancients Recovered GO Pass that will have Trainers reaching in their Pockets right before GO Fest. FOMO might be an issue for some Trainers with a $19.99 price tag being a lot to ask. The timing of expensive tickets comes at the end of the Niantic/Scopely deal which has led to a lot of speculation about who made the call on the pricetag. With the Community already being cautiously optimistic of Scopely's direction, the optics on this aren't the best.What we do know is that you will be able to take a Nundo all the way to a hundo, with scaling tasks depending on the amount of IVs you want to train. This could finally be a bit of end-game content that keeps hardcore Trainers dedicated to their tasks, while also building a strong bond with the Pokémon they are Hyper Training. Sounds awesome, but that pricetag though…We will be recording our next episode before Global arrives, but we still dig into some event prep, with most of our storage and Pokémon still being a mess from Jersey City, there is plenty of cleanup to do. Our ball management took a hit, and hopefully everyone had enough time to recover and restock. Most importantly, we recommend taking a good look at the different habitat spawn pools and timing, to help you figure out when and how to focus your time. In celebration of Pride Month, we're sharing two stories about coming out with the help of science. Part 1: After years of struggling with their gender identity, Parker Sublette finds inspiration in marine life. Part 2: Bullied as a kid for the sound of his voice, Garret Glinka begins to reclaim his confidence thanks to biology class. Parker Sublette is a comedian and speculative fiction writer living in Brooklyn, New York. She can usually be found scrambling around the city looking for any stage that will have her, or at home with her roommates and their two cats. I've been a technician, team leader, supervisor, and lab manager. As a member of the queer community, I bring kindness, authenticity, vulnerability, and positive influence to my leadership style. Now at Columbia University's Neuroscience Institute, I manage two labs, lead the Gender and Inclusion Mentoring Program, and coordinate the Lab Liaison Group, ensuring communication across the institute's departments and other lab managers. When I'm not dissecting Drosophila in New York City, or out to eat with Jersey City friends, I retreat to my family's farm in central New Jersey. This week on the Sumud Podcast, we're joined by Mussab Ali - a cancer survivor, civil rights advocate, and one of the youngest Muslim elected officials in U.S. history. Born in Pakistan and raised in Jersey City, Mussab's story is one of grit, public service, and fearless truth-telling. At just 20 years old, Mussab became the youngest-ever elected official in Jersey City, eventually rising to president of the Board of Education. Where he advocated for clean water access, increased teacher pay, and halal food and Eid holidays for Muslim students. While studying at Harvard Law, Mussab battled cancer, completed chemotherapy, and still graduated while serving his community. Now, he's running for mayor of Jersey City - not just to lead, but to represent. In a political moment where speaking up for Palestine is often seen as a career-ender, Mussab has done the opposite: calling out injustice, demanding a ceasefire, and getting thrown out of city hall for refusing to stay silent.

There is officially no calm before the storm.We start out with a weekly recap of gameplay including Crown Clash:Taken Over, Shadow Regigigas Raid Day, and the kick off of Final Strike: GO Battle Week. There has been plenty to do and Trainers have been given a diverse menu of gameplay options to choose from. This week brought us some really great quality of life items. First, the RSVP Planner is now live and is a great coordination tool for both in-person and remote Raids. We encourage everyone to give it a shot, simply because the only way this tool will be successful is if people are using it. We think this could make a big difference on the ground during events like Community Days. Next was the GO Fest: Jersey City Premier Access, which came and went in less than a day. Those that were able to snag it got some of the best deals ever on in-game consumables along with some great Jersey City perks like lockers and private bathrooms.The event calendar is continuing to be packed with things to do, including some Summer Merriment companion events that will be happening over the IRL GO Fest weekends. It's always such a joy to hear and share the birth stories of students I've had the honor of working with in class, throughout their pregnancies, and today's story is no exception. To have this conversation today with me on Yoga| Birth| Babies I have Mia DiBiase. Mia is 33 years old and lives in Jersey City, NJ with her husband, their dog, and now their new baby. She works at Meta in advertising sales and enjoys staying physically active. Mia is also a PYC alum! What makes Mia's story especially powerful is her experience with a rare and serious pregnancy complication called vasa previa, diagnosed early on. She opens up about the anxiety that came with this diagnosis, its toll on her mental health, and the steps she took to advocate for herself during pregnancy to gain clarity about what was happening in her body. This advocacy became a foundation of self-trust that supported her throughout her birth, through both the challenges and the triumphs. On April 20, 1971, 39-year-old Joseph Rulli, also known as Joe Lupo, mysteriously disappeared from Closter, New Jersey. That day, Joe was hosting a party when he stepped out briefly for an errand but never returned, prompting his wife to report him missing. Days later, Joe's car was discovered in Jersey City, riddled with bullet holes and stained with blood. Initially, investigators assumed Joe had been murdered. However, testing revealed a shocking twist: the blood inside the vehicle wasn't human; it was animal blood. This revelation only deepened the mystery: Had Joe staged his own death and disappeared, intentionally leaving behind a gruesome scene to mislead investigators? Or had someone else murdered him?Joe Lupo had once been a promising boxer, a local hero with a bright future, but an illness altered the course of his life. When he vanished, he left behind a wife and a young son, also named Joe, who has spent decades determined to uncover the truth about his father's disappearance.
