AHOY THERE! I am sure I have used that one before, sorry y’all. WELCOME TO A BRAND NEW EPISODE OF THE ILLUSTRIOUS CINEPUNX PODCASTING PRODUCTION! On this episode Josh has decided to introduce us to two films he refers to as “Ivo Movies”, films he would watch with friend of the show Ivo Tomas again and again. This walk down cinema as comfort and nostalgia is, we hope, as distracting for you as it is for us! There is still a ton of talk about our current pandemic, so hopefully that does not bring you down too much. Of course we engage in our usual gimmicks though to be sure, there is far more WACK to discuss than ON TRACK Still, we manage to find the joy both in our time together and in the films Josh has chosen for us to discuss. If you haven’t seen them, we do engage in spoilers, so be forewarned. Ok basically not much else to say then be safe, we love you, watch out for each other, and please even in this time check out the network and tell people about the show. Thanks and know we are thinking about you all. The post CINEPUNX Episode 109: BIG NIGHT & THE LEGEND OF 1900- Our Feel Good Episode appeared first on Cinepunx.
Dan and Garrett welcome Ivo Tomas back to the show to discuss Ben Wheatley's latest film, Free Fire, which opens in theaters on April 21st. Before doing their typical, spoiler-heavy discussion of the movie, the gang talks about the recently released Thor and Star Wars trailers and has a lengthy, spoiler-free chat about Free Fire that you can listen to before seeing the film. They also chat about their favorite films set in the 1970's that weren't made in the 1970's and announce their upcoming screening of I Am A Knife With Legs on July 15th in Baltimore, MD. Garrett and Dan and joined by returning champions Ivo Tomas and Andy Elijah to talk about the winner of our recent pole, George Romero's Dawn of the Dead. Using a unique setting for a horror film, Romero takes his basic zombie premise of consumption and broadens its scope both literally and metaphorically. In effect, he makes a bigger, meaner horror film while also making a richer, more satisfying satire than his previous outing in the genre, criticizing the American notion that living is not enough in and of itself, it is instead living well that gives us purpose. The gang also chats about a few movie news stories and gives a rundown of their 5 Favorite Horror Locales. Like us on facebook Follow us on twitter Rate & Subscribe on iTunes
HAVE WE GOT A SHOW FOR YOU!! Recorded at the end of our CINEPUNX WEEKEND RETREAT, this episode features the charming Ivo Tomas and the talented though charmless Mikey Smack! We decided to spend a weekend discussing the future of the Cinepunx empire, but mostly watching movies and eating pork products. SO MANY PORK PRODUCTS! We decided to not only watch movies this weekend, but to spend some time discussing the films we watched! Each of us chose one film to specifically watch and discuss: THE WILD BUNCH, VENOM, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, and SUDDENLY AT MIDNIGHT Of course, we had time to watch more movies as well and we discuss those on the episode. There is also the usual gimmicks like WACK AND ON TRACK, and stuff we are hype on. WARNING, THIS EPISODE CONTAINS SPOILERS! One of the things we discussed was that we have not always done the best job of warning folks about spoilers in advance. The most effective way to deal with that would be to create an episode outline for each episode in which we indicate, with time signature, at what point certain ideas and concepts get discussed so that you can skip around if need be. During our weekend away we hiked around Bushkill Falls, and really talked about most of the cinepunx related stuff there. It was a beautiful setting and very inspiring, and in that context I readily agreed that what each episode needs, for both shows, is this very episode map so folks could skip around by time. Now, here at home, I realize that would all fall on me to do, so fuck that shit. I mean yeah, when we have money to pay a producer or editor, we will definitely have some shit like that. Right now, i am editing this late at night at home and at work over my lunch break, so y’all will just learn to live without it. LEARN TO LIVE WITHOUT IT! This is of course the struggle continually with this project. Lots of folks involved, but any new idea we have needs someone attached to execute on it or it will fall to me or Josh, and we can only do so much. So let us say again, we are always looking for people to be a part of this thing. Editors, promoters, writers, producers, whatever talents or ideas you think you can bring we welcome. What we want above all though is folks who follow through. I have heard literally 10 GREAT pitches for new podcasts for our network, and I tacitly said yes to all of them, with the assumption that we would make a final decision when even one episode existed to decide upon. Only one has delivered a single episode, and we all hope THE MANDATE will get off the ground soon cause it is great! Big thanks to Ivo and Mike for being a part not only of this episode but the weekend as a whole. We all had a great time, and Mike was particularly patient with us as we reacted with incredulity at every movie he had never seen before. I am sure it was a trial for him but he was a great sport about it. As I said, we discussed four movies but we also talked some about ALIENS, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, THE MARTIAN, and KEANU. Nothing too in depth, but if these are films you want us to discuss more on future episodes, let us know in the comments below. Extra special thank you to Erick who hooked it up to make this weekend happen, as well as to our patient wives who let us disappear for a whole weekend just to hang and watch films. There are a LOT of people we wanted to be there who couldn’t make it work. You were missed y’all, but hopefully you like the ideas we came up with and will continue to help make Cinepunx such a great endeavor. It was such a cool reminder of how important this community is, and the thing i was most surprised by is realizing how much we want to interact with you all. So besides the usual RATE REVIEW SUBSCRIBE DOWNLOAD DOWNLOAD DOWNLOAD Let me add another imperative- COMMENT AND CONTACT We want to hear from you. Email us or hit us up on social media or comment on a post or come find us on the streets and square up, WHATEVER! Love each other, talk to you soon.
Garrett and Dan welcome guests Ivo Tomas and Josh Alvarez (occasional guest and constant host, respectively, of the Cinepunx podcast) to discuss, salivate over, and sing the praises of George Miller's epic summer blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road. IT IS TIME TO GET THINGS STARTED YOU CINEPUNX FREAKS! Hey everyone and welcome to the 2014 YEAR IN REVIEW episode. We sat down with friend of the show Ivo Tomas to discuss some of our favorite music and movies from the year that was. We focused on our favorites because Liam has some uptight and stupid ideas around awards. So no awards from us. Instead we talk about those movies that made us feel things in a super intense way, and that is also really cool. Ivo is not quite the record nerd we are so he sat out for the record discussion. He was great though, and we were lucky to have him there to be part of the discussion. For those who have strong, sometimes irrationally so, opinions about what films should or should not be considered for end of year lists: we don’t care. We could not even agree amongst our selves about what criteria to use so, we just did our lists and if it is not what you would do, feel free to discuss it on your podcast or, better yet, comment on this one. We fully accept that our opinions do not represent facts, which means we welcome your push back on our picks and decisions. Leave us comments any number of places. Below you will see our lists for reference, though keep in mind they are listed randomly and not in order of importance. IVO: Favorite Films- St. Vincent The Imitation Game Ida Calvary The Guest Boxtrolls Guardians of the Galaxy Grand Budapest LEGO Movie Edge of Tomorrow Babadook Blue Ruin Foxcatcher Snowpiercer Whiplash Joshua: Favorite Films- Her 12 Years a Slave The Lego Movie The Grand Budapest Hotel Locke The Sacrament Blue Ruin The Double Under the Skin Guardians of the Galaxy Boxtrolls Pride Housebound St. Vincent The Guest Birdman Starry Eyes The Babadook Ida Jodorowsky’s Dune Favorite Albums- Mariachi El Bronx – III Aphex Twin – Syro Restorations – Lp3 Hari Kondabolu – Waiting for 2024 Hound – Out of Time At the Gates – At War with Reality Freddie Gibbs and Madlib – Piñata A Winged Victory for the Sullen – Atomos Allo Darlin – We Come from the Same Place Loscil – Sea Island Black Anvil – Hail Death Old Firm Casuals – This Means War Grouper – Ruins Keaton Henson – Romantic Works Nothing – Guilty of Everything Big Freedia – Just Be Free Boris – Noise Cassavetes – Oh So Long Thunder and Glory – As the Ocean Churns Bob Mould – Beauty and Ruin Liam: Favorite Films: Gloria The Grand Budapest Hotel The Look of Silence Jodorowsky’s Dune Under the Skin Blue Ruin Snowpiercer Guardians of the Galaxy The Guest The Lego Movie Whiplash The Tale of Princess Kaguya Nightcrawler The Way He Looks Force Majeure Her Locke Night Moves Ida Why Don’t You Play in Hell? Honestly, I hope these are useful not in evaluating how cool or not cool we are, but really for finding some things that you were perhaps unfamiliar with. It may also give you yet another reason to yell at us which is of course always sick. SOUND NOTES- So, in typical technology confused style Liam attemtpted to “fix” some of the sound issues by playing with the settings in the program we use to record (Kristal). This lead to some interesting sound problems. Nothing so bad that the episode is un-listenable, but at one point it sounds like we have people calling in. We recorded it all together in the same room though. Who knows. Basically, our current set up is not working out for us, though it is not terrible considering how little money or expertise we have. That being said,
We sat down to record Episode 18 with friend of the podcast Ivo Tomas unsure in any way of what we would be talking about. Suddenly, Ivo had a revelation” We should talk about horror movies more because your halloween episode didn’t have that much horror movie discussion”. Besides being shocked that Ivo knew more about the content of our podcast than we did, we were also convinced that he was right! There could never be ENOUGH horror movie discussion, so why not do some more! We cover Halloween and the various films of John Carpenter, we spend some time discussing horror movies involving children, as well as the need to remember when making your horror film that people have seen other horror films. That probably includes your characters. We discuss some recently watched films, and what scary movies really impacted us as well as what we hated. It was a great conversation with Ivo and we hope he will join us on the show as well. BIG SHOUT OUT to the Awesome FEDERAL DONUTS! We were rocking chicken and donuts during the show, and it was delicious. Consider this our first endorsement deal as they are likely gonna give us free donuts for our next show. That place rules! NOTES ON SOUND: look yall, I guess we just don’t know how to use our Microphones well. Ivo sounds great almost the entire time. We do not. Sometimes Josh is too loud, sometime Liam is too loud, often we are either speaking too close to the mic or we are speaking far away but so loud that the other mics keep picking us up. It is all a giant mess, but it never gets unlistenable at all. Just want to acknowledge that we are working on our recording skills. There are some rough edits we had to make because of sound issues, like a one point Josh was holding his mic like he was singing at a punk show and the chord fell out. At another point Liam’s mic just stopped all together. Recording is hard, ok? THANK YOU to everyone sticking it out with us while we discern how to be awesome and less not awesome. You can check out Liam’s column, A JOURNAL OF FEAR, here. You can find Ivo on Twitter here. The post EPISODE 18: HALLOWEEN II THE RETURN (FEAT. IVO TOMAS) appeared first on Cinepunx.
