Ready! Setty! Podcast!! - It's time to go back into the desert as Dave takes 2024's Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga off the shelf. Phil looks back on their Fury Road episode and remarks that both were kind of interested to see this world expanded. However, he found the movie dull and the CGI to be sub-par. Dave enjoyed the action scenes well enough but felt a little let down with the length of the film and how certain set-pieces failed to deliver the way the original did.
On this episode we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Mad Max: Fury Road - Black and Chrome Edition. Often considered the greatest action film of all time, Fury Road reintroduced the world to Max, this time played by Tom Hardy, as he teams up with Furiosa to take on the dystopian warlord Immortan Joe. George Miller's stated intention was to make a movie that was one long chase, and as elemental and close to a silent film as possible. The Black and Chrome Edition brings this vision even closer.Other topics include Charlize Theron, George Miller's filmography and how Babe: Pig in the City fits in, America's obsession with celebrity culture, Warren Zevon's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Riot Fest, and whether or not we should cover The Beaver with Mel Gibson on the podcast.Songs of the WeekLet Them Eat War by Bad ReligionKurt Kobain by ProofBrothers In Arms by Junkie XLRemainders Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter
This week, we're busting out the slammer and potentially wishing we were back in it depending on who you ask, as we team up with the canary-clad copper to take down a star-studded mob in a wildly stylish and outlandishly conceived blockbuster starring a charming old man incapable of doing action scenes, that's been seemingly buried in the Disney vault in the years since. It's 1990's Dick Tracy, directed and produced by Warren Beatty, and starring Beatty, Madonna, Al Pacino, Glenne Headly, Charlie Korsmo, Mandy Patinkin, Dustin Hoffman, Seymour Cassel, William Forsythe, Charles Durning, Dick Van Dyke, Paul Sorvino, James Caan, Kathy Bates and Catherine O'Hara. Most of these stars are unrecognizeable under the monstrous makeup required to make them look like their vintage crime comic strip counterparts, but Pacino made enough of an impression with a wildly comedic take on his typical mobster persona that he netted an Oscar nom for Best Supporting Actor, losing to Joe Pesci for GoodFellas. While Beatty is at least a decade too old to be proper fit as the movie's lead, it's his ambition behind the camera that makes the movie such a curiosity all these years later, as the film is either an enchanting dreamscape filled with unsolvable How Did They Do That movie magic puzzles, or a steaming pile of neon-drenched puke depending on which of our two hosts you ask. But that's okay, as we have some heated disagreement this week that is maybe the closest we've yet come to vintage Siskel & Ebert kinda stuff. Plus: We've both been to the theater and are happy to sound off on Ryan Coogler's latest as JMo and Hayley both greatly enjoyed Sinners in the cinema, and Justin's got a bonus theatrical field report on Drop, the latest from Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon. If you'd like to watch Dick Tracy before listening along to our conversation, good luck finding a physical copy, and Disney will seemingly never stream this thing on Disney+ -- possibly for rights reasons to avoid paying anything more to Warren Beatty, or possibly because they are cowards who are ashamed of the fun movie they made. Either way, it's tough to find outside of renting it on YouTube. Other works discussed in this episode include Creed, Fruitvale Station, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, Mad Max: Fury Road, Loki, The Accountant, The Perfect Storm, Bridge of Spies, War Horse, The Adventures of Tintin, Red Eye, Trap, Reign of Fire, Surrogates, The Expendables 2, The Last Boy Scout, Princess Mononoke, Hook, This Is The Tom Green Documentary, Cutthroat Island, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, G20, The Silence of the Lambs, Longlegs, Resident Orca, Avatar: The Way of Water, Blackfish, Batman ('89), Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, X-Men, Blade, The Shadow, The Phantom, The Rocketeer, Darkman, Speed Racer, Furiosa, Challengers and Sin City, among others. We'll be back (more than likely) next week, with another special in-theaters spectacular, as 100+ episodes after we covered the original film, it is tax season once again and we're back for more Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal in The Accountant 2. So look for that next Friday, and until then we'll see you at the movies!!

While we are well into 2025, there are still a few 2024 moments to wrap up... one being, of course, the annual Deucie Awards, along with the Top Ten of the Year from d$, Mikey, and #XLessDrEarl... ...but that's next week. This week, however, we get ready for the Top Ten by giving you the five leading up to it. Our Almost Top Ten Top Five, with love and shoutouts to some big films like Conclave, Rebel Ridge, Sing Sing, and even love to one that deserved more, like Furiosa. Also, a quick glance at some recent movies seen, like A Working Man and Minecraft. Plus, a special nod to the recently passed legendary actor Val Kilmer, as we give our fave Val movies. Movies Discussed: Alien Romulus The Best Christmas Pageant Ever The Brutalist (for rental) The Doors Dune Part Two Flow (MAX) Furious: A Mad Max Saga The Ghost and the Darkness Heat (Netflix) IF Jim Henson Idea Man (Disney+) Kiss Kiss Bang Bang The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare The Prince of Egypt Real Genius Rebel Ridge (Neflix) Sing Sing Spartan The Substance Thunderheart Tombstone Top Gun Top Gun Maverick Top Secret Val We Live in Time (MAX) Wildcat (Criterion Channel) Wild Robot Willow Wonderland
Play your flame guitar as you cue up the 655th edition of Have You Ever Seen to hear us jaw about the loner known as Max Rockatansky, but stay for the Imperator known as Furiosa. George Miller's 6-time Oscar-winner was the 4th in a series that already featured one of the greatest stunt movies ever made (The Road Warrior), but then he and his team managed to easily top it with Fury Road. And just as it was with the earlier pre-CGI films, most of the remarkable and dangerous stuff was done practically! Tom Hardy is solid casting in taking over the role that made Mad Mel Gibson a star, but this movie belongs to Charlize Theron as Furiosa. She, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough and the other fantastic female characters are the standouts in a surprisingly feminist film. So drive out, then drive back home as we head over to Australia (well, Namibia, really) and wrap up another Oscar Month with a detailed chat about Mad Max: Fury Road. Well, Actually: we said that it's unlikely Miller will get to make more films in this series because Furiosa bombed last year, but Mad Max: The Wasteland IS in pre-production. Film critic and author A.S. Hamrah joins for a conversation on his recent Fast Company piece "Hollywood's obsession with AI-enabled ‘perfection' is making movies less human", which details some alarming (and frankly, depressing) recent use cases of A.I. in both studio blockbuster fare and awards-contending independent releases like Brady Corbet's The Brutalist. We attempt to unpack the psychology driving the pervasive and exponential use of A.I. in moviemaking - Is there a genuine impetus on the part of a moviegoing audience to iron out anything that antagonizes credulity? Why do filmmakers seem so eager to embrace the ease of A.I. at the expense of cinema's sense of "authenticity"? The, we examine the material implications of A.I. on film workers, and how the unanimous embrace of the technology poses an existential threat to the future of craftspeople in Hollywood. Finally, we look to the near future and ask, "Are we already past the tipping point? What, if anything, can we do to oppose A.I.s dominance of Hollywood at the expense of real artistry?"Buy A.S. Welcome back to Born to Watch, the movie podcast where we dive deep into the films that define genres, push boundaries, and leave audiences speechless. This week, we're tackling one of the greatest action films of the modern era with our Mad Max Fury Road (2015) Movie Review. When George Miller resurrected the Mad Max franchise in 2015, nobody expected just how monumental Fury Road would become. A two-hour adrenaline rush packed with death-defying stunts, high-speed chases, and jaw-dropping practical effects, this film redefined what action movies could be. From the stunning cinematography to the minimal but powerful storytelling, Fury Road remains a cinematic triumph. But where does it rank in the Mad Max series? And is it truly a Mad Max movie, or does Furiosa steal the show? The BTW team breaks it all down.Mad Max Returns—But Is He the Star?Tom Hardy takes over the iconic role of Max Rockatansky, a road-weary survivor haunted by his past. But does Max get lost in the dust in a film filled with larger-than-life warlords, kamikaze war boys, and a heavy-metal guitarist strapped to a flame-throwing rig?Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa might be the real heart of Fury Road. Her mission to rescue the wives of the tyrannical Immortan Joe drives the story forward, and her character's emotional depth makes her one of the most compelling action heroines of all time. We discuss whether Fury Road is more of a Furiosa film than a Max one—and how this dynamic affects the franchise as a whole.Behind-the-Scenes Mayhem: A Production NightmareThe journey to bring Mad Max Fury Road to life was almost as chaotic as the movie. Originally planned to film in the Australian Outback, unexpected rainstorms turned the barren wasteland into a flower-filled paradise, forcing the production to move to Namibia. Months of gruelling desert shoots, on-set conflicts, and the sheer ambition of the stunts made this one of the most difficult productions in recent memory.George Miller, the mastermind behind the franchise, pushed for practical effects wherever possible. Almost everything you see on screen—the insane car chases, the gravity-defying stunts, and the war rigs tearing across the desert—was done for real. The result? It is a visceral, pulse-pounding experience unlike anything else. The Legacy of Fury RoadWhen Fury Road hit theatres, it was more than just a blockbuster—it was a game-changer. The film scored 10 Oscar nominations, winning six, including Best Editing for George Miller's wife, Margaret Sixel. But beyond the awards, Fury Road proved that practical effects, real stunts, and original storytelling could still dominate in an era of CGI-heavy action films. But how does it hold up nearly a decade later? Does Fury Road deserve a spot among the greatest action movies ever? And where does it sit in the Mad Max franchise compared to The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome? The BTW Verdict: An Action MasterpieceWith non-stop action, unforgettable characters, and some of the most visually stunning cinematography in movie history, Mad Max Fury Road is a must-watch for any action fan. Whether you're revisiting it for the tenth time or experiencing it for the first, there's no denying that this film is a relentless, high-octane thrill ride from start to finish.Tune in to this week's episode as we break down every explosive moment, debate the film's legacy, and determine if Fury Road is the best Mad Max film yet. Don't forget to leave a review, share the episode with fellow movie lovers, and share your thoughts on the film!
On this week's episode, I'm plesaed to be rejoined by Brandon Struessnig to discuss one of my favorite packages of the year, Vulture's annual stunt awards. Who were the big winners? Almost a decade after Fury Road, George Miller has turned the orange filter back on to tell more tales from the wasteland. Anya Taylor-Joy takes center stage as a young Furiosa battling for survival and freedom from the maniacal Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). But how does this movie stack against the other Mad Max entries? And is it better than its box office performance suggests?

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes The topic of Captain America reshoots is one we've discussed a lot and recently Cap himself Anthony Mackie addressed reshoot and poor test screening rumors head on, telling Empire “It wasn't retooled at all, every Marvel movie I've done has done reshoots, so it's not retooling or remaking. You basically get the movie and the story you want, you edit it together, then go back and shoot a few more scenes." Since last week, The Hollywood Reporter has also finally revealed that the total budget of the film is significantly less than previously thought - coming in at around $180 million dollars. Switching to the Sorcerer Supreme himself, Benedict Cumberbatch made some headlines after revealing in an interview with Variety that Doctor Strange will not be in Avengers: Doomsday. Cumberbatch cited the reason being Strange's character “not aligning with this part of the story,” and also let loose that the Master of the Mystic Arts will be in “a lot” of Avengers: Secret Wars. In typical James Gunn fashion, the director and DC Studios co-chair gave us a first look at Milly Alcock's Supergirl in a still photo he released on social media last week. The post also confirmed filming recently began. The weekend's NFL division championships provided space for a new-ish Superman trailer, with mostly the same footage, but a different look at Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luther. And in our final DC news nugget, actor Ulrich Thomson was cast as villain Sinestro for the upcoming Lanterns series. Thomsen is a Danish actor who was seen in The Blacklist here in the states. In comics, Sinestro is Hal Jordan's mentor. The Oscar nominations were unveiled last week after a brief delay caused by the devastating and ongoing fires in California. Leading the pack this year is Emilia Pérez, earning an impressive 13 nominations despite ongoing controversy surrounding the film's portrayal of cultural identity, which has sparked heated debates online. Close behind are The Brutalist and Wicked, tied with 10 nominations each and A Complete Unknown and Conclave earned eight nods apiece. On the studio front, Netflix emerged as the frontrunner with 16 total nominations, followed by A24 with 14, Universal with 13, Focus Features with 12, and Searchlight with 10. However, the announcement wasn't without its surprises—or disappointments—as some fan-favorite films, including Challengers, Furiosa, and Civil War, were notably snubbed. Warner Bros unveiled a new official trailer for SINNERS from director Ryan Coogler and frequent collaborator and star Michael B. Jordan, the film will hit theatres April 18. David Leitch — the stuntman turned director behind John Wick and The Fall Guy — is in talks to direct Ocean's 14. The film is expected to return original Ocean's 11 cast members George Clooney and Brad Pitt, among others. Neon has released the first trailer for horror film Hell of a Summer, starring Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard, who is also making his directorial debut. The film debuts in theaters on April 18. HBO has renewed anthology series The White Lotus for a fourth season. The third season will begin streaming on February 16. Focus Features, Universal's art house division which released and financed Nosferatu, is reteaming with Robert Eggers for his next film titled Werwulf, currently set for release on Christmas Day 2026. While details are scarce, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the story is set in 13th century England. George Nolfi, known for his screenplay work on movies such as The Bourne Ultimatum and Ocean's 12, has been tapped to write New Jedi Order, the Daisy Ridley-centric Star Wars movie. The move to Nolfi makes the third writer change for the project.

SEASON 2 - EPISODE 122 - Jo Plaete - VFX Supervisor VFX supervisor Jo Plaete (HERE; ALIEN: ROMULUS; FURIOSA) joins us on this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast. Jo is also the Chief Innovation Officer at Metaphysic, and we spend much of the episode discussing the company's AI technology and its use in several recently-released films. Having come up through the VFX world, Jo compares the techniques of more traditional VFX artists to what he does today using artificial intelligence, and he likens the recently spotlighted technology to “proceduralism on steroids”. We get a deep dive into the tech behind the de-aging AI used on HERE, and Jo shares how the technology integrated itself into the production process to let the crew see what the final effect would look like in real-time. Jo also reflects on some of the troubleshooting that occurred between departments during production, and we discuss whether the filmmakers were working around the AI or if the AI was working with them. Jo also shares how data is fed into the technology to build out the model's understanding of a person's face, and Jo shares what they do with all that data once the show wraps. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure
