Minute Eighty-Three: From Thor's Mortal Reveal to Volstagg's Final Moment Joining us to discuss Thor's plan to save the people of Puente Antiguo, the Warriors Three and Sif's plan to take on the Destroyer, and the results for Volstagg are Robin Burdge from Karate Kid Minute and Travis Bow from Reel Comic Heroes. In the eighty-third minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... We've got a deleted scene! Darcy asks a sketchy stranger to take her dog... which she's only had for a few seconds. It's very odd and wasn't in the script. Was this dog the one that was scripted to appear when the Destroyer first steps foot into Puente Antiguo? Thor asks his friends to fight the Destroyer so he can help the Midgardians evacuate the town. This stands out as a key moment for his growth. Does evacuating the town show that the Asgardians know the Destroyer is here? Does it seem presumptuous to evacuate? That being said, how does the Destroyer get here so quickly? A few seconds ago, it was miles out of town! The shots of the Destroyer in town really highlight the complexities of getting great shots and how that affects continuity... at least for nerds watching the movie one minute at a time. The 7-11 blows up. Robin talks a bit about the trope of blowing up 7-11s in movies. But why does the Destroyer blow it up? Is it just because of Loki's “Destroy everything” command? Was it killing cows and blowing up cars and trees on its walk here? Again... HOW DOES IT GET HERE SO QUICKLY? The Warriors Three and Sif put a plan together to take out the Destroyer. Clearly, they have plans like this in their back pocket. Why this one? Have they seen the Destroyer in action before? Their plan doesn't go well for Volstagg. We leave this minute with him lying on the front of a car after getting backhanded by the Destroyer, with the Destroyer looking down at him, ready to burn him to a crisp. Things don't look good for ol' Volstagg! It's a week of saving people and fighting the Destroyer, and Robin and Travis are here for all of it. Tune in! Minute Eighty-Two: Trouble on the Horizon to a Plan on the Table Joining us to discuss everyone's reaction to the arrival of the Destroyer, as well as a coffee cup gaffe, are Robin Burdge from Karate Kid Minute and Travis Bow from Reel Comic Heroes. In the eighty-second minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Why does the Destroyer's arrival through Bifrost look like a mushroom cloud? Are we meant to draw that comparison? Once again, we talk about how much we love Darcy and little lines like, “Is someone else coming?” Does Thor know this is the Destroyer arriving? Is this giant swirling cloud because it's such a big ‘being' arriving? We talk a bit about the Destroyer and how it would've been nice if there was more of a direct explanation as to how someone needs to use their soul essentially to control the Destroyer. There's a bit of comic book comparison with Bifrost travel and the Destroyer, not to mention some discussion about some of the comic origins for this particular story and when Sif was controlling the Destroyer. It's fun how casual Agent Coulson is here. And considering everything from Iron Man and Iron Man 2, it makes perfect sense to us that he would think this is another person in a suit who has arrived. We discuss the coffee cup gaffe. More streets of Puente Antiguo talk. We can finally get a good shot of Arturo's! It's a minute to watch out for as the Destroyer arrives in Puente Antiguo, and we're here with Robin and Travis to talk about it. Tune in! Finally, Chris tells us about legends and beliefs centered around one of the most beautiful phenomena of nature: the Northern Lights. Creep of the Week is an article about Vikings in America. Minute Eighty-One: From Loki Confronting Heimdall to Coulson Confronting an Atmospheric Disturbance Joining us to discuss Loki freezing Heimdall and the SHIELD agents preparing for a storm are Robin Burdge from Karate Kid Minute and Travis Bow from Reel Comic Heroes. In the eighty-first minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Loki arrives to have a chat with Heimdall, but how did he get here? Did he casually walk the entire way from the palace? And has Heimdall just been staring at him his entire walk? Was Heimdall watching Loki on the palace balcony when the Warriors Three and Sif turned the Bifrost on to travel to Midgard? It would make sense and explain why he's out here waiting for him. Again, it's a shame Idris Elba is given so little to do. That being said, he does still stand stoically and imposingly better than most. We love the confrontation between Loki and Heimdall here. Where was Loki hiding the Casket? In a pocket dimension? Or was he grabbing it from Odin's Vault? What's up with Gungnir always standing up when the person wielding it lets go? Are they stabbing it into the ground? It doesn't make a lot of sense. How believable is the CG ice that covers Heimdall? We debate its quality. Is Heimdall just out of practice? Is that why he takes so long to swing that sword toward Loki? From a frozen Heimdall to a probing Coulson Agent Coulson and his SHIELD team investigate the markings left where the Warriors Three and Sif had arrived. But what is it? A compression in the ground? Burnt dirt? What would the agent from linguistics be able to read from this? What looks worse, the wind from the atmospheric disturbance or the ice freezing Heimdall? Even people in Puente Antiguo are looking at the atmospheric disturbance. What could it be? It's a minute of icy receptions, frozen friends, and swirling storms with Robin and Travis. Tune in! Minute Eighty: From Friends at the Door to Heimdall at the Door Joining us to discuss a room full of surprises when the Warriors Three and Sif show up at the door to Smith Motors is Miles Stokes and Elisabeth Allie. In the eightieth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Erik tells Jane she needs hard evidence, and hard evidence shows up at the door in the form of the Warriors Three and Sif. It's goofy but fun. But how did they find the place? Perhaps Volstagg figured it out from the spy gear on the roof across the way. To that end, it would've been great to give him that moment. There's such delight on the faces of the Asgardians. Even Hogun the Grim is smiling. And Sif is waving like a silly school girl. This again makes us want to see that Asgardian high school show. Thor reunites with his Asgardian friends and they're all thrilled to see each other, but Thor's a real mood killer bringing up his dead dad and how he can't go back. It's the moment when Sif tells him that Odin lives that Chris Hemsworth shines as a performer as we see so many thoughts and emotions play across his face as he realizes what Loki's done. It's a great moment and we celebrate it. So what was their plan here? Were they hoping Thor could just swing Mjølnir around and somehow get them back? Knowing what Heimdall said as they were leaving that he has to follow the king's orders, was there any thought that Heimdall wouldn't be opening Bifrost back up for them? To that end, why no comments about where Mjølnir is or why he's dressed the way he is? They didn't see him get stripped of rank and outfit or Mjølnir, after all. The minute ends with Heimdall stoically standing guard at the door to the Himinbjorg. Heimdall stands at the door to Himinbjorg, his observatory. Very stoic. He's gotta know Loki's coming. Does he know Loki's also bringing the Destroyer? Even though we don't get much here, it's a cool shot. It's a minute of reunions for old friends and reveals of Loki's deceptions with Miles and Elisabeth. Tune in! Minute Seventy-Nine: From Two Secret Agents to One Doubting Thomas Joining us to dig into the arrival of the Warriors Three and Sif – for the Renaissance Fair? – in the small town of Puente Antiguo are Miles Stokes and Elisabeth Allie from the podcast Thor: The Lightning and the Storm. In the seventy-ninth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... We meet Agents Cale and Garrett working covertly across from Smith Motors on the roof eavesdropping on Thor and the Scientists Three. We play the IMDb game with the actors playing these roles. There's also discussion about the extended bit with them in the deleted scene where they're talking about the eggs Thor makes. It's kinda funny. Loki sets the Destroyer loose to send to Midgard and destroy Thor. Did Loki have this in the back of his mind all this time? Seems like a brutal way to take out his brother. What pushed him to take this turn? How well does the Destroyer understand commands like this? Loki's commands seem awfully emotion-driven and very broad. Or is there a sense here that part of this is he's working to gain his mental connection to it like in the comics? The Warriors Three and Sif arrive in Puente Antiguo. There are some comedic beats here as this group arrives in town and walks through it looking for Thor while everyone gapes at them. Yes, they do look like they're here for a Renaissance Fair. But do their weapons and outfits need to look so artificial? Or is there something there that hints at their being from another Realm? We discuss the deleted scene which includes several additional bits. The first of which, which we all really like, is Volstagg lifting a car to get a baseball some kids threw. This scene would've added to his character in a wonderful way, giving us a sense of who he is. It also would've helped clarify that the Asgardians, in fact, do have superhuman strength when not broken by Odin's spell. That would've enhanced the fight with the Destroyer. The second part is the Warriors Three and Sif talking about the last time they were on Midgard 1,000 years ago. So that would've been 1011, 46 years after Odin's battle with the Jotuns in Norway. So how old are these characters exactly? And in relation to Thor and Loki? The last bit is Volstagg separating from the group because he smells something tasty. As it turns out, it's the Burger King product placement Agents Cale and Garrett are eating on the roof. It's a silly scene and again focuses on Volstagg's appetite. It's a bit much. But this is why the scene we do get of the four Asgardians marching up Main Street is actually a composite shot with Volstagg digitally added in walking ahead of his friends. And why the Agents on the roof don't give Volstagg a nickname when they call it in. The minute ends with Erik doubting Jane's research yet again. Sheesh. It's the Renaissance Fair! Oh, no, wait—it's us talking with Miles Stokes and Elisabeth Allie about the townies' reactions to the Asgardians in this minute. Tune in! In the seventy-eighth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... So the Warriors Three and Sif take the Bifrost to Midgard, and lo and behold! Loki's watching. But that begs the question – how long has Loki been standing on his balcony waiting to see Bifrost open up? Is Heimdall watching Loki watch the Bifrost? The Warriors Three and Sif arrive on Midgard It looks like the same spot where Thor arrived, so is this really the local Bifrost junction? Turns out SHIELD notices them arrive, and they now have handy computer modeling programs to show it. So do they know it's some form of wormhole travel happening here? Agent Coulson sure doesn't have many questions. He's raring to go out to the desert to investigate. With everyone else is so busy, Thor and Jane make breakfast. It's a very quiet moment – maybe the quietest in the film? – as Thor and Jane make breakfast for a hung over Erik and smiling Darcy. When did Thor learn to make breakfast? Minute Seventy-Seven: From The Plan to The Bifrost Joining us to discuss Hogun's words, the decision the Warriors Three and Sif make, Heimdall's reaction, and the Observatory kicking into high gear are once again Miles Stokes and Elisabeth Allie from the podcast Thor: The Lightning and the Storm. In the seventy-seventh minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor… Was it meant to be a moment of comedy between Sif and Hogun the Grim? Or did Sif have a different plan than Hogun? Regardless, the moment plays in a comedic way. There's also the fact that Hogun speaks again. Is that why everyone turns to him suddenly when he speaks? Could it be that they're surprised to hear from the Vanir that he feels they need to lay their lives down for the Asgardian prince? We pine for the lack of facial hair on Hogun. And where is all of their fantastic headgear? We discuss Hogun from the comics a bit as well. And we point out that they cast the actor who played Genghis Khan in the film Mongol to play Hogun, which seems to fit his look in the comics. Fandral seems to be the one more focused on following orders. To that end, it certainly fits the single traits they're each given. Fandral came close to death on Jotunheim. We wonder why we don't get any acknowledgement in this scene from him that it may be affecting his decisions here. Sif says Thor would do the same for them. But didn't he ignore their pleas on Jotunheim to leave? Or is it that she means he'd break the rules for them? We comment again on how much we'd love to see the Asgardian high school show to see all of these characters when young. Heimdall's been watching as it turns out. What rank is Heimdall as it concerns the Warriors Three and Sif? Are they on the same level? Does Loki as king change that? Again, we love Idris Elba in the role, even if he doesn't get to do much. We dig into Heimdall a bit more from the comics as well. We wonder why Heimdall does his strange fake-out things so often in this film. There certainly is an element of a dangerous game that Heimdall plays with them here as far as his loyalties because he's essentially committing treason as they are. Minute Seventy-Six: From Drawing Yggdrasil to Stress Eating Joining us to chat more about Thor's attempt at drawing and explaining the Nine Realms, as well as Fandral's yelling at Volstagg about his stress eating are Miles Stokes and Elisabeth Allie from the podcast Thor: The Lightning and the Storm. In the seventy-sixth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... We're closing out the RomCom rooftop art session between Thor and Jane. There's also a production code tried-and-true transition to the moon, then see the two of them sleeping next to each other. We discuss how far they went or not. Have people in Asgard ever seen a romantic Thor before? This really may be Thor's first time to explore this side of himself. How interesting to see them so chaste in their sleeping on the roof. We debate about the Nine Realms some more because there's always more time for this. To that end, there's plenty of room for inconsistency in the comics, so it almost makes sense that there's a continued inconsistency in the films as well Patrick Doyle's romantic theme continues here and we continue our adoration for it. To that end, we're fans of romance in the MCU and wish there was more. Yggdrasil comes up again, this time talking about literal versus metaphor versus thematics. But does Thor get any of the positions of the realms correct within Yggdrasil? And does it matter? What is Thor thanking Jane for? We discuss possibilities. Time to return to Asgard into the Healing Room. We debate why Branagh decided to cut into this scene with a shot of the pattern on the floor that then tilts up. Volstagg does some serious stress eating. Should Fandral be so demeaning to Volstagg about it? To that end, it's really not fun to watch Volstagg eat the way he does. It's... disgusting. Plus, you have a beard! Has no one taught you eating etiquette? We debate the strengths and weaknesses of the Warriors Three. Could the filmmakers have done more with them to make them more interesting characters? By simplifying them to single traits each, how much does that diminish them? And is that why they're completely written out by now? We comment how Volstagg may be less a dwarf archetype and more of a dwobbit. Our guests bring perspective on the Warriors Three and Sif from the comics, and it makes us really wish we had better from them. The god's eye view shot... does this signify that Heimdall is watching them? It's the end of the romantic scene (but not the end of the romance!) and some fighting in the Healing Room (if only it had been the War Room!). Miles Stokes and Elisabeth Allie are here for all of it. Tune in! Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel's Discord channel! Minute Seventy-Five: From Thor's Motivation to Thor's Art Joining us to discuss the handing over of the journal and Thor's art attempt at drawing Yggdrasil is Bubbawheat from the Flights, Tights and Movie Nights podcast. In the seventy-fifth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... We really focus on Jane here as she and Thor talk. He's such a cheerleader for her, and we totally believe it. She's really at her lowest here, so it's amazing to see how he turns her around. This is where the whole science/magic conversation happens. It's interesting because magic still seems to exist on Asgard. Perhaps, they know what Midgardians view as magic is actually science, but on Asgard, there is still something magical, even beyond that? Or perhaps Loki's magic is some form of hacking he does with their advanced science? Why does Jane have what ends up being Thor's Yggdrasil in her journal? It doesn't look like our solar system. What was she working on? And how does Yggdrasil work? Are we meant to believe it's a metaphor? Or some weird space thing? How do the Nine Realms work? We spend some time going through all nine of the Realms and trying to figure out exactly how it works, as compared to how they work in Norse myth versus the comics. We also discuss a few other areas that are sometimes incorporated into the Realms. Why are the Frost Giants from Jotunheim when it sounds like Niflheim – a planet of primordial ice – would be more natural for them? Again, Andy is really not impressed by Thor's art efforts here. How does Thor know about the Hubble Telescope? Bubbawheat brings some great research about Icelandic and Norse accents and how they'd actually be pronounced. They're very interesting. We go into pronunciation because of how Thor says ‘Hubble Telescope.' Is it just a fish out of water joke? Or is there some other joke with language? It wasn't scripted, so perhaps it's a joke they came up on set. Maybe it's how Australians say it. (Just kidding.) We dig into the Hubble Telescope a bit as far as it's history, and point out where you can look online to see images from the Hubble Telescope. It's been a week of romance by the fire, and now Thor's drawing some funky tree. It's our last chat with Bubbawheat. Tune in! Minute Seventy-Four: From A Fireside Connection to Some SHIELD Frustration Joining us to discuss the RomCom Tropes-filled relationship between Jane and Thor, Jane's journal, and her anger at SHIELD is Bubbawheat from the Flights, Tights and Movie Nights podcast. In the seventy-fourth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Wow, is this minute overloaded with RomCom tropes! Matthew runs through a list of many of them. They make for great conversation topics for sure. Interesting that Jane says, “I'm really glad that you're safe,” instead of, “I'm really glad that you're okay.” There's an interesting irony there, particularly knowing what Loki's plotting for Thor. Thor seems to have working on looking internally here. One of the tropes? That special something she's been looking for that he's found and gets for her. We all love Jane's 4-color BIC pen so much. The firelight... so romantic... The only trope we're missing is the ‘I feel like I've known you forever' trope. Again... Patrick Doyle's score... so good... We talk about how Thor really has so much empathy now. It's great to see. Jane's struggling about something that has nothing to do with him, and he's interested. Another trope. Jane's afraid SHIELD won't let her research see the light of day. Is it that they'll hide it? Or use it for their own evil purposes? This does feel like that element of SHIELD that's run by Hydra agents. We debate any potential storyline with Jane's father and Erik and connections to SHIELD they may have had in their past. We've got more romance, a special gift, and some anger at the government to talk about with Bubbawheat today. Tune in! Minute Seventy-Two: From Loki's Warning to Thor's Delivery Joining us to discuss the working relationship between Loki and Heimdall, as well as the arrival of Thor with a drunk Erik over his shoulder is Bubbawheat from the Flights, Tights and Movie Nights podcast! In the seventy-second minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Heimdall takes a long time to reply to Loki about his loyalties. And Loki looks unhappy about that. Is Heimdall feeling guilt now that he earlier betrayed Odin to let Thor go down to Jotunheim? Or was that a situation where the ends more justified the means? Is part of the reason Loki asks this now is because he knows Heimdall disobeyed Odin earlier and wants to make sure he knows so Heimdall doesn't obey now? We debate this point for a bit. Very interesting moment here. Loki walks out with a comment about Thor's mess. What's he mean by that? Is he afraid Heimdall will open the Bifrost to Thor? Or is he worried that Heimdall may bring Thor back? Meanwhile, back on Midgard... Jane's now reading Erik's library book. Kinda distracted, but still reading it. We see she eats GoLean Crunch! Thor shows up with a drunk Erik thrown over his shoulder. How drunk did Erik get? Does it matter that we didn't get to see the bar fight or Erik passing out in the street? Erik seems to be buddy-buddy with Thor now. So does that mean Thor can stay? Thor's metabolism is Asgardian but he's mortal. Why is he handling his liquor so well? When Thor says Erik made his ancestors proud, what would it have been that made them proud? But where did Thor get this plaid coat? It was laying on the bar. Did he steal someone else's coat? It's kinda a lumberjack flannel chique... in other words, fairly ugly. We identify Jane's shirt, thanks to people online. It's not Miss Minutes though. It's called Wandering Sun designed by Marc Jacobs. And Bubbawheat points out a few of the movies that Jane has on DVD in her trailer. Minute Seventy-One: From Loki's Icy Dealings to Heimdall's Suspicious Leanings Joining us to discuss Loki's plotting and planning, and how he treats Heimdall, is Bubbawheat from the Flights, Tights and Movie Nights podcast. In the seventy-first minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Loki and Laufey continue their conversation about Loki's involvement in the raid on Odin's Vault, and Loki's plan to get Laufey into Asgard to kill Odin. He says they'd look down on him if he were the one to kill him father, but wouldn't that fit perfectly with this Shakespearean story? Loki also says he'll return the Casket of Eternal Winters to Laufey. Does he mean it? Why does Loki not reveal to Laufey that he's his son? We stew on that some more. Bubbawheat theorizes about the three frost giants and how Loki may have mind controlled one to tell two others he knows of a secret passage to Asgard. Laufey stands up when Loki presents his offer. Is he playing his cards a bit too quickly? We theorize some more about the possibility that this planet is falling apart and the Jotuns are actually weakened as a species right now. It does seems Laufey knows his power is fading. Loki digs on the way Jotunheim looks. Is that part of his plan, or could he just not help throwing in another dig at this place? After all, Loki is in a power position to piss Laufey off with the idea to get him to agree to this plan. Laufey's “I accept” is so slow and drawn out. It's interesting how his pattern works. So is Laufey then trying to downplay his “I accept” after he showed his hand too quickly when he stood up. It does read as very deliberate. Loki returns through the Bifrost to Heimdall's Observatory Loki stepping off the Bifrost weirdly looks like he's getting off the subway. Very strange. Loki and Heimdall have such a a battle here. A battle with words. That being said, Idris Elba still barely gets to move in this scene. Would Loki be able to put a new gatekeeper in this role now that he's king? Or is this a perma-role for Heimdall because of his vision? There's a bit of a sense that Heimdall is observing more with his super-eyes. Was he watching Loki with Thor? To that end, did Loki change clothes so Heimdall wouldn't recognize him? If only there were a way to see when Loki is shrouding things. Loki plays a bit of three-dimensional chess with how he sets up Heimdall to admit he's king and has to do what he says. To that end, is Heimdall even playing the same game that Loki is?
