GET ROOTED IN HEALTH - Wellness, Nutrition, Toxin Free Living, Motherhood, Godly Growth Mindset

Hello friends! On today's episode we will be talking all things Spring garden! Once you get me talking about plants and gardening there's no shutting me up. I have been growing in my knowledge and mastering this skill for over 10 years now. One thing I want you all to know is that, you CAN grow your own food. Whether it's on a large scale or a small scale, for self sustainability or for an outdoor hobby, it doesn't matter. If you want to try it, go for it. I will say, though, you must be willing to accept failure and grow from it. I share my tips for planting indoors, if you'd rather buy from a local nursery, things you can use but don't need, what plants to start indoors vs direct sowing outside, what are cold hardy plants, and more. I know you'll love this episode and is perfect for aspiring gardeners. John Coykendall on Starting a Spring Garden and Planning for Tomato Sandwiches Today, we are setting the table with the spring garden and planning for tomato sandwiches. My guest is Master Gardener, seed, and story saver John Coykendall. We discuss when to put our plants out, a word about the last frost in East TN, ways of planting, and the best seeds to select for our future Tomato sandwiches. In the second half of the show, John discusses rotating crops and adding nutrition to our garden soil – practicing good stewardship. He also discusses how to grow our crops to avoid cross-pollination and what happens when the varieties cross. I also ask him about how to save tomato and cucumber seeds when the season is over. John is also an artist and has a pile of journals in which he has written stories in the dialect of people he writes about, along with pencil drawings on the pages of those journals that reflect the stories he writes. There may be a drawing of a method of root vegetable storage under a pile of straw and dirt to stay fresh through the winter from back in the early part of the 20th C. He might have a drawing of a structure that used to stand on his farm in Bybee, TN. Landscapes of places he has visited, drawings of root vegetables and seeds…all sorts of interesting drawings and recordings of people's lives, wisdom, and dialect. I have added some pictures of John and his drawings from his journals seen in this post.

Spring gardening is more than just planting seeds—it's a practice of gratitude. As we nurture new life, we're reminded to appreciate the sunshine, rain, and the earth's abundance. Watching tiny sprouts grow teaches patience and resilience, while the beauty of flowers and the taste of homegrown food deepen our thankfulness. Gardening connects us with nature, calms the mind, and offers moments of reflection. Whether sharing produce or simply enjoying the process, a garden cultivates gratitude in every season.

Planning Your Spring Garden | Episode 342 Spring may still be a few months away, but now is the perfect time to start planning your garden. By preparing early, you can ensure a productive and enjoyable growing season. Why Plan Now? Getting a head start means you'll be ready when planting season arrives. Popular seed varieties often sell out quickly, so ordering early ensures you'll have what you need. Planning now also allows you to spread out costs, making it easier to budget for seeds, soil, and tools. What to Plant When deciding what to grow, focus on crops your family enjoys eating. It's also important to choose plants suited to your region's climate and soil conditions. Consider companion planting to maximize space and help your plants thrive—tomatoes and basil, for example, are a classic pair. Preparing the Soil Healthy soil is the foundation of a thriving garden. Start by testing your soil to understand its pH and nutrient levels. From there, you can add compost, manure, or other amendments to enrich it. Mulching is another excellent way to retain moisture and control weeds. Starting Seeds Indoors Seed starting is a great way to jump-start your garden. Use trays, lights, and a warm space to grow your seedlings indoors. Heirloom seeds offer unique flavors and qualities, while hybrid seeds often provide better disease resistance—choose what fits your goals. Tools and Expansion Now is also a good time to clean and sharpen your tools or replace worn-out equipment. If you're expanding your garden, think about raised beds, container gardening, or trying new varieties. Consider setting up irrigation systems like drip lines or rain barrels to save water. By planning ahead, you'll be set up for success and can enjoy the fruits (and vegetables!) of your labor all season long.

Welcome to Bri Books! On today's episode, we're talking about falling in love with the garden this spring, first-time gardening secrets, and how to get kids excited about gardening. Almost everyday, Carla of @gardenplot.57 treats us to vibrant photos of her cut flower garden, homemade skincare products, and dozens of veggies she's growing in her backyard garden in Cornwall, England. In this episode, Carla gives tips on how to start (and maintain) a garden in a small space, and shares tips on DIY gardening projects we can do right now to get a jump on the season. Carla and I bonded over the amazing book “Floret Farm's A Year in Flowers: Designing Gorgeous Arrangements for Every Season” by Erin Benzakein, an amazing resource that'll inspire you to step up your flower arranging (and flower growing) game. Carla also shares the secret to getting kids interested in gardening and how to lure them away from the XBox and towards the garden box.   Carla's guide to gardening in a small space:  1. Utilize your patio by planting pots with salad greens, herbs, and dwarf tomatoes.  2. Go high! Make use of vertical space by creating vertical planters. Archways and trellises allow you to grow “up,” and make use of tiny amounts of space for things like beans, peas, cucumbers and tomatoes.   More gardening resources recommended by Carla and Brionna: Huw Richards YouTube channel and book, “Grow Food for Free” Sandria of A Beautiful Nest Misilla of Learn to Grow Adam Yn Yr Ardd, a wildly talented Welsh gardener   If you're new to the show, leave a review of Bri Books on Apple Podcasts, and listen to Bri Books on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and SoundCloud!
