We suit up with Nick, Elise, and Anthony for a screaming-death-metal joyride through Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior — a film that finally lets the Mad Max franchise become its full, feral self. This week's episode is a dirt-caked love letter to flamethrowers, mohawks, and one of the best truck chases ever put to film. With more grease, grunts, and guzzolene than you can shake a trident at, the gang is running on all cylinders. Elise marvels at the commitment to practical stunts, Nick channels his inner Humungus apologist, and Anthony quietly starts a one-man HR investigation into post-apocalyptic warlord ethics. We dig deep into George Miller's world-building genius, from snake-based anti-theft devices to the emotional fallout of boomerang fatalities. And while Max may only speak 16 lines in the whole movie, the hosts more than make up for it with their breathless, flame-fueled commentary. We get into the politics of wasteland sex appeal, the dietary mysteries of jacked desert warlords, and why George Miller should be legally required to keep making Mad Max movies until the heat death of the universe. If you've ever wanted to hear someone yell “I'm not a sex therapist but you can get fucked” and mean it as a character beat and a thesis statement — this is the episode for you. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082694

We fire up the Interceptor and go full throttle into George Miller's apocalyptic fever dream with Mad Max — the gritty, low-budget Aussie flick that started it all. This week, we ride shotgun with Nick, Elise, Anthony, and Manny as they barrel down Anarchy Road in a whirlwind of chaotic impressions, leather daddies, and saxophone seduction. It's the birth of a cinematic legend, but that doesn't stop us from marveling at the bizarre world-building choices, thirsting over plant-filled apartments, or spiraling into heated debates about fan belts, face loss, and what exactly that biker gang was doing with a mannequin. One minute we're discussing guerrilla filmmaking, the next we're debating if Mel Gibson was too hot to be taken seriously as a man on the edge. We also pay tribute to Goose — the MVP of the movie and the true spiritual ancestor of every doomed best friend in action cinema. His wipeouts are legendary, his charm unmatched, and his demise the moment Max finally puts the “mad” in his name. Come for the guzzaline-fueled car chases, stay for the wildly unhinged takes and all-too-accurate observations about spiders, cops, and the universal appeal of nipple clamps. This one's not just rewatchable — it's damn near road-worthy. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082694/

Before Fury Road, there was the raw, gritty original. We'll talk twisted metal, post-apocalyptic vibes, and why Mad Max still matters over four decades later.Whether you're a Road Warrior veteran or revving up for your first ride through the Outback, this episode is your gateway to the madness.

On this episode we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Mad Max: Fury Road - Black and Chrome Edition. Often considered the greatest action film of all time, Fury Road reintroduced the world to Max, this time played by Tom Hardy, as he teams up with Furiosa to take on the dystopian warlord Immortan Joe. George Miller's stated intention was to make a movie that was one long chase, and as elemental and close to a silent film as possible. The Black and Chrome Edition brings this vision even closer.Other topics include Charlize Theron, George Miller's filmography and how Babe: Pig in the City fits in, America's obsession with celebrity culture, Warren Zevon's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Riot Fest, and whether or not we should cover The Beaver with Mel Gibson on the podcast.Songs of the WeekLet Them Eat War by Bad ReligionKurt Kobain by ProofBrothers In Arms by Junkie XLRemainders Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter

Our discussion about the animated film Happy Feet leads to some interesting questions, like; Does Mumble kill God, or is he a Christ figure? Is he being punished for the sins of his father? Can a penguin experience ego death? Why do penguins have so many accents? Are aliens gods? Are penguins aliens? Can a movie about a dancing penguin cause you to question your role as an evil force on earth? Is this a good movie? Spoiler alert: Both. Probably. Yes. Robin Williams. Maybe. Sometimes. Oh yeah. Not really. Set in the cold land of Antarctica, the film follows Mumble (Wood), an emperor penguin who is able to tap dance brilliantly despite lacking the ability to sing a heartsong to attract a soulmate. After being continuously ridiculed and rejected by peers and his own father (Jackman), Mumble departs on a journey to learn what is causing the local fish population to decline — and to find himself along the way…

Play your flame guitar as you cue up the 655th edition of Have You Ever Seen to hear us jaw about the loner known as Max Rockatansky, but stay for the Imperator known as Furiosa. George Miller's 6-time Oscar-winner was the 4th in a series that already featured one of the greatest stunt movies ever made (The Road Warrior), but then he and his team managed to easily top it with Fury Road. And just as it was with the earlier pre-CGI films, most of the remarkable and dangerous stuff was done practically! Tom Hardy is solid casting in taking over the role that made Mad Mel Gibson a star, but this movie belongs to Charlize Theron as Furiosa. She, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough and the other fantastic female characters are the standouts in a surprisingly feminist film. So drive out, then drive back home as we head over to Australia (well, Namibia, really) and wrap up another Oscar Month with a detailed chat about Mad Max: Fury Road. Well, Actually: we said that it's unlikely Miller will get to make more films in this series because Furiosa bombed last year, but Mad Max: The Wasteland IS in pre-production. Film critic and author A.S. Hamrah joins for a conversation on his recent Fast Company piece "Hollywood's obsession with AI-enabled ‘perfection' is making movies less human", which details some alarming (and frankly, depressing) recent use cases of A.I. in both studio blockbuster fare and awards-contending independent releases like Brady Corbet's The Brutalist. We attempt to unpack the psychology driving the pervasive and exponential use of A.I. in moviemaking - Is there a genuine impetus on the part of a moviegoing audience to iron out anything that antagonizes credulity? Why do filmmakers seem so eager to embrace the ease of A.I. at the expense of cinema's sense of "authenticity"? The, we examine the material implications of A.I. on film workers, and how the unanimous embrace of the technology poses an existential threat to the future of craftspeople in Hollywood. Welcome back to Born to Watch, the movie podcast where we dive deep into the films that define genres, push boundaries, and leave audiences speechless. This week, we're tackling one of the greatest action films of the modern era with our Mad Max Fury Road (2015) Movie Review. When George Miller resurrected the Mad Max franchise in 2015, nobody expected just how monumental Fury Road would become. A two-hour adrenaline rush packed with death-defying stunts, high-speed chases, and jaw-dropping practical effects, this film redefined what action movies could be. From the stunning cinematography to the minimal but powerful storytelling, Fury Road remains a cinematic triumph. But where does it rank in the Mad Max series? And is it truly a Mad Max movie, or does Furiosa steal the show? The BTW team breaks it all down.Mad Max Returns—But Is He the Star?Tom Hardy takes over the iconic role of Max Rockatansky, a road-weary survivor haunted by his past. But does Max get lost in the dust in a film filled with larger-than-life warlords, kamikaze war boys, and a heavy-metal guitarist strapped to a flame-throwing rig?Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa might be the real heart of Fury Road. Her mission to rescue the wives of the tyrannical Immortan Joe drives the story forward, and her character's emotional depth makes her one of the most compelling action heroines of all time. We discuss whether Fury Road is more of a Furiosa film than a Max one—and how this dynamic affects the franchise as a whole.Behind-the-Scenes Mayhem: A Production NightmareThe journey to bring Mad Max Fury Road to life was almost as chaotic as the movie. Originally planned to film in the Australian Outback, unexpected rainstorms turned the barren wasteland into a flower-filled paradise, forcing the production to move to Namibia. Months of gruelling desert shoots, on-set conflicts, and the sheer ambition of the stunts made this one of the most difficult productions in recent memory.George Miller, the mastermind behind the franchise, pushed for practical effects wherever possible. Almost everything you see on screen—the insane car chases, the gravity-defying stunts, and the war rigs tearing across the desert—was done for real. The result? It is a visceral, pulse-pounding experience unlike anything else. The Legacy of Fury RoadWhen Fury Road hit theatres, it was more than just a blockbuster—it was a game-changer. The film scored 10 Oscar nominations, winning six, including Best Editing for George Miller's wife, Margaret Sixel. But beyond the awards, Fury Road proved that practical effects, real stunts, and original storytelling could still dominate in an era of CGI-heavy action films. But how does it hold up nearly a decade later? This is an awesome movie from George Miller! Not as good as Fury Road but they aren't and shouldn't the same kind of movies. Almost a decade after Fury Road, George Miller has turned the orange filter back on to tell more tales from the wasteland. Anya Taylor-Joy takes center stage as a young Furiosa battling for survival and freedom from the maniacal Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). But how does this movie stack against the other Mad Max entries? And is it better than its box office performance suggests?
Back in 2007 making a superhero team up movie was not a sure thing. This did not stop Warner Bros, along with Mad Max, Babe, and Happy Feet creator, George Miller from coming up with the first big super hero team up movie "Justice League: Mortal". A writer's strike later, an unknown cast, and a non-committed Australian government would be too tough a foe for Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and friends, and the movie would be lost before a single shot was taken.Join RD as he goes over the script and wonders if we missed out on a potential super hero masterpiece.Download the episode for free.

Hey there, fellow watchers! It's your host Whitey, flying solo once again for this special edition of Born to Watch. After last week's popular solo mailbox episode, he's back on the mic, diving deep into the year that was 2024—a year that, in Whitey's words, wasn't exactly Hollywood's finest. With a trusty mix of humour, honesty, and more than a few nostalgic callbacks to the glory days of video shops, Whitey gives us his take on the Good, the Bad, and the downright Ugly movies of 2024. This episode covers everything, whether you're looking for hidden gems, blockbuster letdowns, or absolute cinematic disasters, so strap in for the best and worst movies of 2024.The Good – Movies Worth Your TimeKicking things off with the Good list, Whitey revisits some of the standout films of the year. First up is Alien: Romulus, a tense sci-fi thriller that Whitey still stands by after a couple of rewatches at home. Despite a few nitpicks—like the unnecessary hybrid twist and a clunky android character—he praises its gripping tension, stellar action, and atmospheric set design reminiscent of the original Alien film. Whitey even boldly declares it might just be the third-best movie in the franchise!Next, it's time for some weather chaos with Twisters, the legacy sequel that brought just enough nostalgia without going overboard. Whitey recounts his less-than-ideal cinema experience (complete with overly chatty patrons) but admits the film was still a blast, thanks to Glen Powell's charisma and a twin-tornado showdown that kept him glued to his seat. And, of course, Whitey couldn't leave out Deadpool and Wolverine, a crowd-pleaser packed with slapstick humour, MCU references, and the electric chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. From the toe-tapping spectacle of Wicked to Denis Villeneuve's stunning epic Dune: Part 2, Whitey breaks down what made these films worth watching—and why you should check them out if you haven't already. He even gives a shoutout to Juror #2, Clint Eastwood's final film, calling it a fitting farewell for the legendary director. The Bad – Not Terrible, Just DisappointingIn the Bad section, Whitey tackles films that had potential but ultimately fell short. First on the chopping block is Furiosa, George Miller's Mad Max prequel that struggled without Max himself. While Whitey appreciates Miller's world-building and some solid action scenes, the bloated runtime and over-reliance on CGI left him underwhelmed. He also critiques Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which failed to capture the charm of its predecessor despite the return of the original trio.Whitey wraps up this section by discussing The Fall Guy, a disappointing adaptation of a beloved 80s TV show. Despite its promising cast—Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt—the film's ludicrous plot and lack of heart earned it a spot on the Bad list. The Ugly – The Year's Biggest LetdownsFinally, we arrive at the Ugly, where Whitey unleashes his full frustration on Joker: Folie à Deux. He doesn't mince words, calling it a “trainwreck of boredom and arrogance” that destroyed the original's brilliance. While Whitey has a soft spot for musicals, this wasn't the kind of musical he could get behind.Bonus Mentions & What's Coming NextFor those who stick around till the end, Whitey throws in a couple of honourable mentions, including Gladiator 2—a film that, while unnecessary, still delivered some fun moments—and Inside Out 2, a sequel that entertained without reaching the emotional depth of its predecessor.Looking ahead, Whitey teases next week's episode, where he and Damo will tackle The Last Jedi, one of the most divisive Star Wars films of all time. Expect fiery opinions, passionate debate, and plenty of laughs as the duo dissects what could be the worst Star Wars movie ever made.If you're a fan of brutally honest reviews, nostalgic movie talk, and Whitey's signature blend of wit and sarcasm, this episode is a must-listen. So grab your popcorn, settle in, and enjoy this rollercoaster ride through 2024's cinematic highs and lows. We close out Year 1 of this podcast with my favorite movie of 2024. Luckily, Ian Berry (artist, programmer, trivia host, and all-around Astoria film hero) is even more into "Furiosa" than I am. We talk about what it means to have Chris Hemsworth's villain almost steal the show, why the Mad Max movies are like the Gospels, and break down the difference between George Miller's myth-making and Hollywood's usual world-building. I also spend a few minutes at the beginning sharing my Top 10 films of 2024. Thank you all very kindly for spending any amount of time with The Kick. See you in 2025!
