We are back again, proving once and for all that What's New to Netflix is the ultimate Netflix podcast, especially when it comes to telling you all of the new titles coming to Netflix in April 2025! Then it's Tom Hiddleston in a J. G. Ballard adaptation of madness, destruction, and paint in High-Rise, directed by Ben Wheatley from 2015. Next, Emily Blunt has to do some very unethical things in order to bring a drug cartel down, with the help of Benecio del Toro and Josh Brolin in Sicario, directed by Denis Villeneuve, from 2015. And then we get into The Russo Brothers' The Electric State from 2025. Is it as bad as people say it is? Can Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt salvage this movie, or is this one for the scrap heap? All of this plus the shocking absence of comedy specials and reality shows and the return of Black Mirror and You. got a suggestion for the show?: whatsnewtonetflix@gmail.com

Jo and Adam reflect on their recent experience of venturing to a special screening at York Picture House Cinema on Halloween night to watch a film so disgusting viewers have been reported to have left the cinema to be sick. The film is The Substance, and Adam and Jo are here to analyse its satire. Heralded as a satire on female beauty standards, we wonder if it is actually having too much fun laughing at grotesque caricatures of the ageing female body? Is patriarchal capitalism really the target, or is it the vanity of Demi Moore's character for hoping she still had a place in it? Intergenerational conflict is also the theme of our second study in this episode: Ben Wheatley's Generation Z, which announces itself as a 'satirical horror series in which Baby Boomer Zombies eat their relatives' -- but is that really all that is going on? Also, Jo and Adam talk about the role of satire during the American presidential election, and the suggestion that big tech should use AI to label online content as satire.

Ben Wheatley's 2011 Kill List is an obscure film, but one with surprisingly deep themes of class conflict, PTSD, the pressure of everyday life, and the oppressive nature of society. The movie is cloaked in a veneer of hitman action and occult activity, but can be confusing or unsatisfying if purely viewed and interpreted at face value. Richard, Thorin, and Monte discuss why they love Kill List especially because of its pretentiousness and incredible ambition. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

It's time for that summer break you deserve, as we turn our attention to Lady Jennifer's Birthday choice - Ben Wheatley's magnificent “Sightseers”. A film which teaches you that G.B.H. stands for Great British Holiday; that dogs and knitting don't mix; and that, at a push, faecal matter can be an interesting alternative to lipstick. The minds of writers/stars Alice Lowe and Steve Oram blend perfectly with director Ben Wheatley's cinematic (and sometimes brutal) vision in this pitch black comedy that pulls no punches; transposing the serial killer road movie over the mundanity of a pair of British misfits on a camping holiday. A film for anyone who knows that true horror is being trapped in a caravan, having a row, in the pouring rain. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.

“How many on the list?”A Slow-Burn Descent into DarknessBen Wheatley's second feature film, Kill List, was released in 2011 to critical acclaim. The film follows Jay, a former soldier turned hitman, as he takes on a new job with his friend Gal after a traumatic event in Kiev leaves him unable to work for eight months. As Jay and Gal begin their new assignment, they quickly realize that there is more to their targets than meets the eye, and they find themselves embroiled in a dark and twisted conspiracy.Unraveling the Mysteries of Kill ListIn this episode of The Next Reel, we dive deep into the many layers of Kill List. We discuss how the film slowly reveals information about Jay's past and his work as a hitman, keeping the audience guessing until the very end. We also explore the film's shift from what's been described as a kitchen sink drama to a hitman story and finally to a cult conspiracy, and how Wheatley ties all of these elements together in a satisfying way – at least for us.Throughout our discussion, we highlight the incredible performance of Neil Maskell as Jay, a man struggling with trauma and rage. We also touch on the film's exploration of masculinity and the ways in which Jay's inability to express his emotions leads to violence and destruction.Other Points of DiscussionThe film's references to Arthurian legend and how they relate to Jay's characterThe twist ending and its impact on the storyThe relationship between Jay and his wife Shel, played by MyAnna BuringThe relationship between Jay and Gal, his best friend and co-worker, played by Michael SmileyThe film's use of violence and how it serves the storyKill List is a film that feels like one that will reward us on multiple viewings, as each watch hopefully will reveal new clues and connections that we may have been missed the first time around. While the ending may be polarizing for some viewers, we found it to be a satisfying conclusion to a story that keeps you guessing until the very last frame.A Must-See for Fans of Slow-Burn ThrillersOverall, we thoroughly enjoyed Kill List and its slow-burn approach to storytelling. Ben Wheatley and his wife/co-writer Amy Jump craft a tense and unsettling atmosphere that keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the performances from the entire cast are top-notch. Ah-ha! Two of the most acclaimed British directors of the 2010s take centre stage in this episode, albeit with very, very different films.Christopher Nolan originally envisaged his dreamy heist movie Inception as a low budget feature. But just after he'd made Insomnia, he got 80 pages into what he felt the film should be and hit a stumbling block. Two Batman movies and The Prestige later and he finally began to crack it - and things built from there. It was a lengthy journey too to bring the dark British comedy Sightseers to the screen, a road that began when Alice Lowe and Steve Oram started working on the two lead characters in an Ealing comedy club. And - with a helping hand from Edgar Wright - their work would come to the attention of a fast-rising director by the name of Ben Wheatley...The stories of both films are told in this episode. ---Film Stories print magazines can be found at store.filmstories.co.uk---Find Simon on Twitter and Bluesky at @simonbrew, and the podcast can be found at @filmstories Hosted on Acast. Welcome to the 200th episode of the podcast Watch With Jen. It's a milestone I never anticipated reaching when I launched the show in early 2020. Back then, I wasn't sure if anyone would be interested in listening to me talk about the movies I love. I am so grateful for your listenership & support & hope you'll stay tuned in the future as I continue to celebrate cinema with my knowledgeable, passionate guests. Returning to the podcast this week, we have the impressive critic, in-demand lecturer, & insightful author Mr. Adam Nayman, who longtime listeners will remember hearing last summer around this time as he joined me to discuss the life & career of actress Gene Tierney. A contributor to The Ringer, Criterion, CinemaScope, The New Yorker, & more, additionally, our Toronto-based guest has written thoughtful books on SHOWGIRLS, Ben Wheatley, the Coen brothers, Paul Thomas Anderson, & David Fincher. Analyzing the life, films, & performances of one of classic cinema's greatest actors & activists, in this roughly 65-minute research-filled conversation, Adam & I share observations about both the most landmark films & overlooked turns in the career of Burt Lancaster, & pay close attention to SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, THE SWIMMER, ATLANTIC CITY, & other favorites as well. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times... In this double feature episode, it's a tale of two theaters. Mark regales us with stories from his grimy and skin-crawling AMC screening of TMNT, while Matt brags about his VIP fan event experience at the glossy Whole Foods cinema for the uber-rich & famous like the fancy lad that he is. It's like Rich Dad, Poor Dad... except with movies! Join us as we review Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Meg 2: The Trench, the first studio outing for arthouse weirdo Ben Wheatley. Does he High-Rise it up, or did Warner Bros. put him on their Kill List and reign him in? Along the way, we also chat a bit about Guardians Volume 3, the Union Square PS5 riot (so timely! so political!), and escapism in movies. It's A LOT. Cowabunga, dudes. This week's episode of the Empire Podcast puts the 'Meg' in mega, as Ben Wheatley returns to the podcast to talk about his new film, Meg 2: The Trench. This interview, conducted by Chris Hewitt immediately after our Empire VIP Club screening of the film earlier in the week, is a ton of fin-related fun, with Wheatley talking about how he came to direct a film that is unlike anything else on his filmography, emerging from Spielberg's shadow, and working with The Stath. It all starts around the 55-minute mark. Chris is then joined in the virtual podbooth by James Dyer and Ben Travis to discuss the best band in Star Wars, franchises that run the gamut from five-star to one-star entries, the week's movie news including the possibility of Wonder Woman 3 and Scream VII, and review Meg 2, Joy Ride, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Oh, and Ben (Travis, not Wheatley) finally loses his cool. Enjoy.

When Adam Nayman reflects on what makes There Will Be Blood so resonate, it's one of the central questions Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 film asks that serves as a timeless themes in American culture. "What does it look like when you're appetite simply cannot be sated?" Nayman asks. "Your eyes are not bigger than your stomach. You literally need to have everything."  On today's show, Nayman, the author of Paul Thomas Anderson: Masterworks joins to break down the film. We discuss how Daniel Plainview reflects the feeling of living through the Bush Administration and War On Terror, why Paul Thomas Anderson uses our oil addiction as a motif in films, and what There Will Be Blood a mirror of a number of American businessmen throughout the country's history.  Adam Nayman is a contributing editor for Cinema Scope and writes for The New Yorker, The Ringer, Sight and Sound, Reverse Shot, and Little White Lies.
