We are fortunate to be joined this week by Jesse Townley. Jesse, also known in the scene as Jesse Luscious, is a veteran of the punk scene, having been a member of The Criminals (Lookout Records), The Gr'ups, Blatz (Alternative Tentacles) & The Frisk (Adeline Records). Currently, he performs in The Pathogens and Scene Killers. Jesse moved to the East Bay Area as a young man and become entrenched in the thriving punk scene surrounding the 924 Gilman Street Project. Over the years, he has been a volunteer at the club, and an active member of the Berkeley rent board. In addition to all of this, he has also been a DJ on various radio stations for years, and a reviewer for magazines like Maximum Rock and Roll. Currently, Jesse lives in the U.K. and works as a project and sales coordinator for Packaged Sounds, a vinyl manufacturing plant, which is a great fit for him having spent many years working as a release manager at Fat Wreck Chords, Alternative Tentacles and Lookout Records. Needless to say, Jesse has done and seen it all, and has a lot of great insight and stores to share. Jesse grew up in the Roxborough neighborhood of Philadelphia. Upon discovering HC punk, he fully immersed himself in the mid-/late-'80s scene. He founded Philly Zine and moved to a squat at 51st and Baltimore in West Philly. By the late '80s he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he sang for acclaimed (and often chaotic) bands such as Blatz, The Gr'ups, The Criminals, and The Frisk. He was an elected member of the Berkeley Rent Board, he's run a record label, and much, much more! Too much to cover in one episode, that's for sure! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adultingwell/support
An Archetypal Mosaic interview with Jesse Townley at the Alternative Tentacle record label. A conversation about the music industry, records, artists and upcoming releases.
Sean Gustilo/November 17, 2013 Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Sean Gustilo. Sean Gustilo was born in Pennsylvania but grew up the youngest son of Filipino immigrants in the town of Glassboro in South Jersey. His older brother turned him onto punk in the mid-’80s and he was soon attending shows in venues such as Club Pizzaz, Revival, and City Gardens. He met Jesse Townley (later Jesse Luscious and also interviewed in this project) and took over Philly Zine when Jesse headed for parts West. Through Philly Zine, Sean began to explore not only his interest in punk, but also the use of computers for design (which was rather new at the time) and the awakening “homo punk” scene. Sean was one of a small but loud chorus of voices of gay punks speaking out in a scene that at the time barely addressed matters of sexuality in the scene. As Philly Zine wound down, Sean came to work on NO LONGER A FANzine with me and operate the I Love You ‘zine distribution service. As well, Sean was a founding and crucial member of the Cabbage Collective. Among other things, we talk about how Sean came out and the changes in greater American society’s attitudes regarding homosexuals from when he came out to the present. Sean now lives in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco and works in the tech industry. His time of active involvement in the DIY punk scene had a lasting and tremendous impact on his life. Upon discovering HC punk, he fully immersed himself in the mid-/late-’80s scene. He founded Philly Zine and moved to a squat at 51st and Baltimore in West Philly. By the late ’80s he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he sang for acclaimed (and often chaotic) bands such as Blatz, The Gr’ups, The Criminals, and The Frisk. Records, writing the chaos punk/crusty anthem “Fuck Shit Up” with Blatz, on-stage mutilation with a razor at a Fugazi show, working at Alternative Tentacles, Jesse’s lifelong love of punk, and a great deal more.
