Dr. Richard Boyatzis, joins Dr. Bradley Block to unpack why even accomplished physicians often lose their sense of meaning mid-career. Drawing from his Intentional Change Theory, Dr. Boyatzis explains that fulfillment dips every 7–10 years as part of our natural life cycle — what he calls liminality, the space between “what was” and “what's next.” The fix isn't distraction (real estate, side gigs, or skydiving), but rediscovering your vision — your “ideal self” — and aligning daily work with your true values. He warns against the trap of coaching for compliance — trying to fix patients (or yourself) through fear and goals. Instead, focus on coaching with compassion — inspiring sustained change through purpose, gratitude, and hope. Physicians, he says, thrive when they reconnect to why they entered medicine: to help, heal, and matter. Through personal stories, neuroscience, and humor, Dr. Boyatzis offers a practical roadmap for reigniting passion without abandoning your profession — whether that means teaching, mentoring, volunteering, or simply reframing success through renewed purpose.Three Actionable Takeaways:Revisit Your Vision Every 7–10 Years: Midlife restlessness isn't failure — it's biology. Reflect on your ideal self by asking, “If my life were fantastic 10–15 years from now, what would it look like?” Write it down, talk it out, and use it to guide new choices in work and life.Coach (and Care) with Compassion, Not Compliance: Patients — and physicians — change through hope, not fear. Replace “If you don't…” warnings with vision-driven goals (“What do you want to live for?”). Shared purpose boosts motivation, treatment adherence, and well-being.Recharge with Purposeful Connection: Gratitude and positive storytelling aren't fluff — they activate the parasympathetic system and restore energy. Start meetings or days with one uplifting story, or jot three things you're grateful for. It rewires stress into meaning. About the Show:Succeed In Medicine covers patient interactions, burnout, career growth, personal finance, and more. From Trauma to Triumph: Dr. John A. King on Living from the Inside Out Most of us carry invisible stories — old pain, expectations, and patterns that shape how we live, lead, and love. Dr. John A. King knows that journey firsthand. After surviving years of childhood abuse and losing everything when his repressed memories resurfaced at 45, he had to rebuild his identity from the ground up. Today, he helps men recover from trauma, rediscover authenticity, and live from the inside out through The Phoenix Collective and Mindfire Challenge. This conversation isn't just about surviving the past — it's about reclaiming your agency, rebuilding your inner world, and redefining what "success" really means. Key Points: Healing starts with honesty. Dr. John says most people avoid the truth because it's uncomfortable — but authenticity is the foundation of healing. You can't transform what you won't face. Men process pain differently. Men connect "shoulder to shoulder," not "face to face." Healing often happens through shared experiences — working, walking, or even just sitting together — not traditional talk therapy alone. Your past should refine you, not define you. Dr. John reminds us that the goal isn't to erase the past but to let it shape you into someone stronger and more self-aware. "Regret," he says, "is a waste of chemical and time." Purpose, mission, vision, and values keep you on track. When these four are aligned, your "no's" become automatic. You stop saying yes to everything and start saying yes to what truly matters. Success is about preparedness, not luck. Echoing Earl Nightingale, Dr. John says success happens when opportunity meets preparedness. Don't chase the moment — prepare for it. Money Learning from Dr. John: Dr. John grew up in a home that was financially stretched and emotionally unsafe — a mix that taught him early how money and stress can distort values. His lesson: "You can make money and do good — integrity and wealth are not opposites." True prosperity comes from living in alignment, not accumulation. Key Takeaway: You don't heal by running from your story — you heal by reclaiming authorship of it. Guest Bio: Dr. John A. King is the founder of The Phoenix Collective and Give Them a Voice Foundation. An Indigenous Australian, John is a bestselling author, TEDx speaker, and advocate for survivors of trafficking and trauma. Drawing from his own story of rebuilding life after loss, he now helps leaders and entrepreneurs develop a performance mindset—training them to rise with resilience in both life and business. "I Was Homeless for a Decade… and Still Survived" w/ Sean Speck | The Hopeaholics PodcastIn this intense and deeply personal episode of The Hopeaholics Podcast, Sean Speck opens up about a journey that few survive—years of addiction, homelessness, relapse, medical trauma, and ultimately, an unexpected path to redemption. Sean takes us through the harsh reality of smoking weed at 14, graduating high school addicted to meth, getting kicked out at 19, and spending nearly a decade homeless on the streets of Riverside. He talks openly about the first time he used a needle, the psychosis that consumed him, waking up in an industrial complex without his colostomy bag, and the terrifying moment doctors told him alcohol had destroyed his colon. Sean describes the collapse of his life as he relapsed again, eating 45–75 gas-station “heroin” pills a day, taking a “one-time” hit of heroin that pulled him right back into the cycle, and being forcibly taken to detox as his fiancée fought to save his life. But he also shares the moment everything shifted—calling from a park saying he was done, begging God to remove the obsession, reconnecting with his daughters, and learning to rebuild his life through honesty, humility, and real recovery. This episode is raw, vulnerable, heartbreaking, and absolutely inspiring. It's a reminder that even after years of darkness, there is still hope, still redemption, and still a way forward.#thehopeaholics #redemption #recovery #AlcoholAddiction #AddictionRecovery #wedorecover #SobrietyJourney #MyStory #Hope #wedorecover #treatmentcenter #natalieevamarieJoin our patreon to get access to an EXTRA EPISODE every week of ‘Off the Record', exclusive content, a thriving recovery community, and opportunities to be featured on the podcast. https://patreon.com/TheHopeaholics Go to www.Wolfpak.com today and support our sponsors. Inside the Mind of a Compulsive Gambler with Louis Ruggiero | The Hopeaholics PodcastIn this gripping episode of The Hopeaholics Podcast, Louis Ruggiero lays everything on the table as he shares his unbelievable journey through addiction, gambling, destruction, and redemption. From the moment he first sat at a blackjack table at just 15 years old and turned $200 into $9,000, Louis became hooked on the rush—a rush that would ultimately cost him over $10.2 million, countless relationships, and nearly his life. He opens up about his battles with opioids, alcohol, and gambling, his public downfall after a headline-making arrest in New York City, and the years of chaos that followed as he spiraled deeper into addiction while trying to hold onto a facade of success. Louis paints a vivid picture of the highs of Vegas suites, private jets, and massive wins, followed by the devastating lows of broken promises, debt, and suicidal thoughts. Yet through all the pain, he found redemption in recovery—turning to Gamblers Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous, and the 12-step program to rebuild not only his sobriety but his sense of purpose. Now, nearly a year sober from gambling and years clean from drugs and alcohol, Louis is using his platform and his podcast Nothing's Off the Table to shine a light on the realities of addiction and the hope found in recovery. His story is brutally honest, deeply human, and serves as a reminder that no matter how far you fall, it's never too late to change, heal, and rise again.#thehopeaholics #redemption #recovery #AlcoholAddiction #AddictionRecovery #wedorecover #SobrietyJourney #MyStory #Hope #wedorecover #treatmentcenter #natalieevamarieJoin our patreon to get access to an EXTRA EPISODE every week of ‘Off the Record', exclusive content, a thriving recovery community, and opportunities to be featured on the podcast. https://patreon.com/TheHopeaholics Go to www.Wolfpak.com today and support our sponsors. The Visual Intonation Podcast welcomes filmmaker Alicia K. Harris, a storyteller who turns quiet moments into vivid emotional landscapes. She joins us from Scarborough, the community that shaped her artistry and continues to pulse beneath every frame she creates. Alicia talks about the lessons that carried her from student sets to national stages, and how early affirmations like the Best Director award at Ryerson helped her believe that her voice belonged in the world. In this episode she traces the path from her first short film Fatherhood to her breakout success with Pick, the film that earned her a Canadian Screen Award and opened new doors across the country. She shares how each project taught her a different truth, from the bruised comedy of Love Stinks to the quiet power woven through All Things But Forget and Maybe If It Were a Nice Room. Alicia explains how she builds characters who breathe, falter, fight, and invite audiences to see themselves without apology. We explore the creative courage behind On a Sunday at Eleven, the film that brought her a second Canadian Screen Award. Alicia reflects on the craft decisions that shaped it, the patience it demanded, and the joy of seeing a personal story resonate with so many viewers. She also talks about stepping into television, directing episodes of Lockdown, The Parker Andersons, Amelia Parker, and Beyond Black Beauty, where she won the award for Best Direction in a Children's or Youth Program or Series.Alicia closes with a look at the mission that fuels Sugar Glass Films, the company she co founded to champion women and marginalized voices. She speaks about mentorship, community, and the responsibility she feels to widen the gate for the filmmakers coming after her. This conversation is a study in artistic intention, a reminder that great work begins with a single truthful idea, and a celebration of a filmmaker who continues to shape Canadian cinema with clarity and heart.Alicia K.
