Hour 1: We're just getting started. If you are looking for new, original storytelling - don't look to Hollywood. Arnold Schwarzenegger is working on reboots for THREE of his iconic films. It's all in the headline: Scrubs, Bridgerton, Yellowstone spin-off, and Tinkerbell! The Bernese coat of arms is striking an unlikely debate. Are you really a girls' girl? Here's how we look out for friends and fellow women you don't know. Hour 2: The woman who shot up Rihanna's house was ranting on social media. Bob is spilling a little bit more about ‘Project Hail Mary' ahead of its release next week. More Game of Thrones news. It's National Napping Day - go for it. Vinnie is still giving out his landline. 1986 was an interesting year in the Black Sabbath camp. Fan interest was waning. Bands that Sabbath influenced were leaving them in the dust. And the band's 12th album "Seventh Star" wasn't doing them any favors. At this point, Sabbath was basically the Tony Iommi Project and the Sabbath sound was abandoned for something a little more 80s friendly. So this week we decided to tackle this forgotten record in our "40th Anniversary Album Spotlight Series". We go into everything surrounding the band at the time before doing a deep dive into the album. This was not your Dad's Sabbath. Or anyone else's for that matter. In our "News, Views and Tunes", we pay tribute to Mark from Impetigo (RIP). Musically, we crank Exhumed, Jello Biafra, Trouble, The Obsessed, the aforementioned Impetigo, Death Row (Ger), Leatherhead, Black Knight and we introduce British punkers Be N!ce in our "Indie Spotlight". Horns Up!!
This week, I'm joined by actor, author, magician, mentalist, and songwriter Rob Zabrecky (Zabrecky, Possum Dixon & author of Strange Cures), who chose to discuss a music TV series close to both of our hearts: NEW WAVE THEATER. We also talk about the fantastical stories from Rob's life including his F.B.I. impersonating Uncle and convincing Sherman Hemsley of The Jeffersons to buy Black Flag's TV Party single, how truth will always out-weird fiction, going out on the road with Dead Milkmen, how it was not unusual to see Drew Barrymore making coffee while Ann Magnuson performed at the legendary L.A. art-weirdo venue Pick Me Up, trying to get Wall Of Voodoo's Stan Ridgway to produced Possum Dixon, Rob walking into Kenzo's Yogi Magic Mart in Baltimore and it changing his trajectory from music towards magic, the disappearing condom magic stage act of Possum Dixon and Peter Buck's take on seeing it live, performing in front of Penn & Teller, discovering New Wave Theater, Night Flight, Fear, Suburban Lawns, the weirdo bands that appeared on NWT who never made a record, the incredible life of host Peter Ivers, Peter opening for Fleetwood Mac in only a diaper, Peter Ivers super fan Jello Biafra, Peter writing the music for and singing "In Heaven" for David Lynch's Eraserhead, the dark world of NWT producer/director David Jove, the unsolved murder of Peter Ivers, Circle Jerks, the performance of "The Film We Never Made", the one-act play Rob wrote about Peter Ivers, who should be cast to play Peter Ivers, NWT's opening monologues and the Chris Genkle commercials, 45 Grave and more!So let's cut to the Ghost Host and hope they don't get beat up by a band on this week's Revolutions Per Movie!!!ROB ZABRECKY:https://www.officialzabrecky.com/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdkww86deyo5VU20uDJ3uvQREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Seattle's all-women garage-rock wrecking crew The Darts kick off their new album cycle with “Midnight Creep,” the first advance single from their upcoming LP Halloween Love Songs, out March 3 on Adrenalin Fix Music. The single drops Tuesday, January 13 and finds the band slipping deeper into the spooky, swagger-heavy garage-trash universe they've been flirting with since day one. If you've ever wished the Back From the Grave comps came with a dance craze, you're already in the right neighborhood. The Darts have spent the last decade carving their name into the global underground with Farfisa-first garage chaos, sold-out shows across Europe, the UK, and North America, and multiple sold-out vinyl runs. They're known for genuine, close-to-the-crowd performances and Nicole's honest connection with the room, a band that brings people into the show and plays from real joy rather than polish. They've landed sought-after KEXP live sessions and hit major festivals like Punk Rock Bowling, Binic Folk and Blues, SJOCK Festival, and Bear Stone Festival, earning fans ranging from Dave Vanian to Stephen King to Jello Biafra. With Nicole Laurenne (vocals and keys), Rebecca Davidson (guitar), Lindsay Scarey (bass), and the returning Rikki Watson (drums), this lineup feels like the most dialed, dangerous, and joyfully unhinged version of the band yet. “Midnight Creep” started as a surprise curveball when Lindsay brought Nicole a demo called “Phantom Creep.” Nicole was already quietly writing a Halloween-themed album and immediately heard a chance to chase something different: an honest-to-ghoul old-school monster dance, the kind that might've aired on a haunted Shindig episode taped in a basement full of fog machines and paper-mâché bats. She rebuilt the tune into a slinky, organ-driven earworm; Lindsay created a simple, go-go-friendly choreography; and suddenly The Darts had a Halloween banger that felt both brand-new and weirdly familiar. They've been testing it on the road for months, from Switzerland to Cincinnati, and everywhere in between. The reaction has been instant every night. Whole rooms start doing the dance without needing to be shown. It's instinctive, like the ghosts of old 45s are moving people around by the hips. To bottle that energy, they teamed up with Frogman director Anthony Cousins, who shot a gloriously campy video steeped in B-movie mood: basement gloom, creature-feature attitude, and the dance front and center for anyone ready to join the creep. It looks like the lost midnight-movie segment some long-gone TV station forgot to broadcast. My guests this week are two absolute legends, Jackie Sharp and Jill Hoffman-Kowal of the punk rock video team Target Video (who documented hundreds of incredible live performances by Iggy Pop, The Screamers, Black Flag, Throbbing Gristle, minutemen, The Cramps, Hüsker Dü, Survival Research Laboratories, Bauhaus, Dead Kennedys, Lydia Lunch, and Young Marble Giants to name just a few). They are lifelong friends to this day… so get ready for jaw-dropping stories galore! We discuss Target Video's origin story & meeting head honcho Joe Rees, how they got their first old-school video camera at the time, Joe's unusual approach to documenting bands, the origin story of The Mutants, their initial cable TV show, how their first color shoot was filming the iconic performance of The Screamers, how they shot The Cramps at the Napa State Mental Hospital, Glenn O'Brien's TV Party, Jello Biafra staying in fancy hotel rooms in the UK, crashing on the floor of The Members, The Stray Cats playing the UK for the first time, how Jackie and Jill gained the trust of bands to film them in an era when bands were suspicious of being filmed, how the SF punk scene changed when Circle Jerks first came up from LA to play there, using fake addresses to keep the cops away from the Target headquarters, having eight-hour viewing parties in Paris, touring Europe with Dead Kennedys, the powerful footage of Throbbing Gristle playing a basketball court, CRIME playing San Quentin, Black Flag being nerds in the studio and making comedy videos with Target, shooting the TV PARTY music video, Target documenting rarely seen tours by Devo and Iggy Pop, being P.I.L.'s tour guides in NYC, Target video reunion shows, hooking up your VHS player to your stereo and more!So let's fly the Target flag high and play this episode loud on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!TARGET VIDEO: targetvideo.blogspot.com/REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. This episode is what happens when the boys hit record while hanging out with Todd Conklin and then decide, “Good enough, let's roll with it.” The Toddfather has definitely been seen rocking Birks, so he gets his very own NOFX song reference. It starts where all serious safety conversations should start: punk records, new tattoos, banjo heckling, and arguing about what “tier” everyone is in. Then Todd shows up and immediately ruins the fun by asking a question that actually matters: "Why does safety keep talking about innovation while mostly just polishing the same old stuff and calling it progress?"From there, things go sideways mostly in a good way. The boys talk about how new ideas don't die because people hate them; they mostly die because nobody keeps pushing them. How safety has gotten weirdly obsessed with full-tilt scientific legitimacy, certainty, and defending itself instead of, you know, making work better. How LinkedIn is not helping. At all. And how most “innovation” in safety is just the same tools with new names and a shitty logo.Todd does what Todd does: calmly points out uncomfortable truths. He's like those old Jello Biafra interviews from the '80s and '90s, just splitting people's minds open. Like the fact that the most interesting innovation isn't coming from safety conferences; it's coming from places like pediatric hospitals, high-risk teams that never think they're good enough, and organizations that actually design around how work happens instead of how they wish it happened. Also, nostalgia is not a strategy, and compliance is not a personality.Somewhere in the middle, they realize (again) that safety isn't the goal, positive change to how we work is. Safety is just what falls out when work is designed, supported, and adapted well. That realization is immediately followed by more sarcasm, some light despair about the future of leadership, and at least one rant about why “waiting for the next big thinker” is probably a losing move.Does this episode solve anything? Absolutely not, even though the fellas definitely claim to. But, like punk rock, it's a reminder of why this stuff still matters, especially when it feels like the field is stuck in neutral. Also: still no new tattoos. Which honestly feels like the biggest failure of the episode. DISCLAIMER: You probably shouldn't take anything in this podcast too seriously. Punk Rock Safety is for entertainment only. It's definitely not a replacement for professional or legal advice, and the fair amount of piss-taking, shithousery, and general ridiculousness ought to clue you into the fact that no one - and no organization - is endorsing (or un-endorsing, if that's a thing) any products, ideas, or other things. Except NOFX. We definitely endorse them.Oh, and give your money to Punk Rock Saves Lives. They're a rad organization that works in mental health, addiction, and human rights. And they're awesome people who can use your help to keep on kicking ass at what they do.https://www.punkrocksaveslives.org/Let us know what you think at info@punkrocksafety.com or on our LinkedIn page.Merch at punkrocksafetymerch.com

There was a phony article going around that Jello Biafra was going to reunite with East Bay Ray and Klaus Flouride to once again be The Dead Kennedys. It's not true, but why do the DKS have such beef? Sadly for America, the Dead Kennedys' fire-bombing hardcore classic "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" b/w "Moral Majority" is even more relevant today than it was when Alternative Tentacles released it back in 1981. By the way, Jello Biafra is the absolute worst. Just a horrible person all around.
Nato Green started hanging out at San Francisco comedy clubs when he was in eighth grade. Nato's parents met when they both still lived in the suburbs of Chicago. They got married in 1968 and moved to San Francisco soon after that. Nato says that they “were in the counter-culture, but bad at it.” What he means by that is they didn't take their subversive lifestyles all the way like many of their peers did. But they were definitely left-leaning folks. They settled in Noe Valley, which was quite a different neighborhood back then. It was much more working-class than it is today. Think: blue-collar Irish- and Italian-American families. They had their first kid, Nato, and five years later, their second, his younger brother. When Nato was in middle school, his parents split up. He went with his dad to live at 22nd Street and Dolores, and then up to Bernal Hill. He split time between there and his mom's house in Noe Valley. Nato is quick to point out that Bernal Heights was also very different back then. There were even unpaved roads on the hill when he was a kid in the Seventies. Today, Nato uses history and some pop-culture references to date his own memories here in San Francisco. He remembers things like the Mosone/Milk murders and ensuing “White Night” riots, to name just one. The Forty-Niners' string of Super Bowl wins in the Eighties are another. Nato admits that he wasn't the best big brother. He lists off some of the SF schools he attended—Rooftop Elementary, MLK Middle School, and Lick-Wilmerding High School, where he went on a scholarship. His dad worked to the SFUSD for 35 years and worked on desegregation, among other things. He also taught in SF public schools. Nato says he was a “sensitive, depressed kid.” He read a lot, especially comic books. He graduated from high school in 1993, when the local music scene was overtaken by thrash/funk. Bands of that genre were plenty. Nato went to those shows, where he was able to, anyway. He wasn't yet 21. The first indie comic book store in The City was on 23rd Street in the Mission—The SF Comic Company, and two doors down was Scott's Comics and Cards. Nato became a Scott's regular. Others who hung out there a lot became his buddies. The SF band Limbomaniacs lived next to Scott's. Nato goes on a sidebar here about how bands in the thrash/funk scene never really blew up, mostly owing to what a uniquely live experience the music was. In 1990, when the Niners won the Super Bowl in a blowout, the Limbomanics played with guitar amps at the windows of their Victorian on 23rd Street, facing out. As Nato tells it, skater kids poured out of that house, and other neighborhood kids flocked to the scene. A mosh pit soon emerged, of course, on the asphalt. Nato goes on another quick sidebar here about all the different neighborhoods and scenes interacting on a regular basis. At least when he grew up, they did. Nato's main modes of transportation in San Francisco were his feet and Muni. The main bus lines were the 24, the 49, and the 67. His high school was on Ocean Avenue, but he mostly hung out in the Mission. One of his good friends lived in Lower Haight and had a car, so Nato would sometimes take Muni over there. That buddy with a car would also swing by and pick up Nato and his friends. They'd often go to the west side of town and hang out in coffeeshops. Nato rattles off several of those shops, also letting us what occupies those spaces today—Farley's (still there), Higher Grounds in Glen Park (still there), Higher Grounds in The Mission (closed), Café Macondo (Gestalt today), Blue Danube (still there), and the Horse Shoe (empty today). There's another sidebar about Jello Biafra. Nato says, “Don't meet your heroes.” As mentioned up top, he started hanging out at comedy clubs in The City when he was in eighth grade. There was a show on KQED called Comedy Tonight that featured local comics. Originally, the show was shot at Wolfgang's (now Cobb's), but it later moved to Great American Music Hall. Alex Bennet was on Live 105 in the morning and Comedy in the Park was drawing 50,000 people to the Polo Fields. There were five seven-nights-a-week clubs in SF, and at least five more around the Bay. People made a living as regional headliners. Around this time, Nato's eighth grade science teacher's roommate was the doorman at Cobb's. Word got around to that guy that a kid was into comedy, and so he started taking him to that club. He saw comedians such as Greg Proops, Dana Gould, Paula Poundstone, Mark Pitta, Johnny Steele, Will Durst, Greg Behrendt, and Margaret Cho. He watched these folks, some of them anyway, become headliners. Check back next week for Part 2 and the conclusion of our episode on Nato Green. We recorded this episode at Nato's home on Bernal Hill in January 2025. Photography by Nate Oliveira
Joey Killingsworth, the driving force behind Joecephus and the George Jonestown Massacre, has spent close to 20 years blending outlaw country with thrashing riff rock to build a loyal following. A Memphis native with deep musical roots—his father, Bo Jack, played with rockabilly legend Eddie Bond—Killingsworth initially resisted country music but later embraced it, launching the Massacre as a vehicle for his diverse influences. Known for creative collaborations and tribute projects, he's worked with legends like Jello Biafra and Greg Ginn. Joey is also a booking agent who works with both Lydia and Tim.

In this episode of Seeing Them Live, host Charles welcomes Scott Patrick Weiner, an artist and lifelong skateboarder who currently teaches art at Hanselton Middle School in Massachusetts. The conversation kicks off with Scott reminiscing about his first concert experience in 1991 at the Walter Brown Arena, where he saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers with opening acts Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins. Scott recounts the electrifying atmosphere and the impact that punk rock had on his life following his discovery of skateboarding in 1988.The episode delves into Scott's diverse music tastes, ranging from hip hop to industrial, and his favorite bands like Sonic Youth and the Dead Kennedys. He shares insightful stories about attending Lollapalooza in 1992 and how Ministry's intense performance left a lasting impression. Scott also talks about the local hardcore scene in Boston during the early 90s, highlighting shows by bands like Chillmark that gave him a sense of community. A particularly touching moment comes when Scott describes taking his daughter to her first concert to see Wussy, a band whose songs he used to sing to her as lullabies. Did Iggy Pop and Debbie Harry approach their "Well, Did You Evah?" cover for Red Hot + Blue with the appropriate level of professionalism? Which downtown shopping and dining spots Christina visited with Sonic Youth still exist today? Was Shawn Wayans One To Watch? What does "gerbiling" really mean? And how did Winona Ryder EVER agree to play a character named Dinky Bossetti? We can't promise we answer all these questions, but we definitely try in the November 1990 Pop Culture episode! Dead Kennedys - the scabrous, Northern Cali-based band that taught the world how to stage dive - created some of the most indelible anthems in hardcore, naming and shaming those in charge and challenging its audience to face hard truths. The band's gone through a few line-up changes in its 40+ years, but one constant has been the instrumental interplay of bassist Klaus Flouride with guitarist and co-founding member East Bay Ray, along with the hyperspeed precision of drummer D.H. Peligro (who passed in 2022). Live, they've worked with vocalist Skip (the Wynona Riders) for longer than original singer Jello Biafra was in the band, and they're gearing up for more shows. Klaus joins the pod to talk about the band's history and musical gestalt, his own idiosyncratic solo output (coming soon to a digital music service near you!), and how they may have to update some of their classics for our present day insanity. Kinky Friedman, the singer, songwriter, humorist and sometime politician who with his band, the Texas Jewboys, developed an ardent following among alt-country music fans with songs like “They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore” — and whose biting cultural commentary earned him comparisons with Will Rogers and Mark Twain — died on Thursday at his ranch near Austin, Texas. He was 79.The writer Larry Sloman, a close friend, said the cause was complications of Parkinson's disease.Mr. Friedman occupied a singular spot on the fringes of American popular culture, alongside acts like Jello Biafra, the Dead Milkmen and Mojo Nixon. He leered back at the mainstream with songs that blended vaudeville, outlaw country and hokum, a bawdy style of novelty music typified by tracks like “Asshole From El Paso” and “We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to You.”He toured widely in the 1970s, with his band and solo, including on the second leg of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue in 1976. He performed on “Saturday Night Live” and at the Grand Ole Opry — Mr. Friedman claimed to be the first Jewish musician to do so (though in fact others, including the fiddler Gene Lowinger, had beat him to it).Another performance, recorded for the TV show “Austin City Limits,” was reported to be so profane that it has never been aired. In the 1980s, after the band broke up, Mr. Friedman turned to writing detective novels, using the same casual irreverence that he brought to the stage in books like “Kill Two Birds and Get Stoned” (2001) and “God Bless John Wayne” (1995)Yet there was a surprising earnestness behind his weirdness. Mr. Friedman founded a ranch for rescue animals. He and his sister, Marcie, ran Echo Hill Camp, which they inherited from their parents and which they offered, free of charge, to children of parents killed while serving in the U.S. military. He spent an increasing amount of time on his ranch. The Echo Hill camp closed in 2013, but three years ago, he and his sister revived it, this time with a focus on helping the children of fallen service members as well as the children of refugee families from Afghanistan.“There was a volunteer who fixed a water heater who I went over to thank,” he told Texas Highways magazine in 2023. “He said, ‘You're welcome. I'm doing it for Jesus.' I told him, ‘I'm doing it for Moses.'”Clay RisenNew York Times

Playlist;(sintonía) MOJO NIXON and SKID ROPER “Pirate radio” (Root hog or die, 1989)MOJO NIXON “Beer ain’t drinking” (Gadzooks!!! Dave Dictor, the frontman of the punk rock band MDC, originally hailing from Long Island, New York, pursued his education at Boston University and the University of Texas in the 1970s. Dave co-founded the Reejex in 1979, which later evolved into MDC (Millions of Dead Cops). Relocating from Austin to San Francisco in 1982 and then to Portland, Oregon in 1995, MDC made a significant impact in the early American hardcore punk scene with their politically charged lyrics. The band used various names with the MDC moniker, and Dave Dictor, alongside his band, released influential material through Jello Biafra's label, Alternative Tentacles. After a hiatus in the '90s, they returned in 2000 with new members. In 2016, MDC released Mein Trumpf, a politically charged album, and their anti-Trump slogan was chanted at protests, and adopted by Green Day during a live performance.
Fresh off releasing "Two Songs I Wrote in 1993 & Recorded Last Week," legendary Australian singer-songwriter Ben Lee joins me for episode 93 (pure numerological coincidence!) to reflect on key moments of musical discovery -- seeing Nirvana play at Big Day Out, starring in a school musical called Uncle Moishe and his Mitzvah Men, recording fucked-up sounding songs on his Tascam 244, hoping to emulate Appetite for Destruction but coming up with something even cooler, figuring out how to get his demo to a record label, and more recent insights about longevity and staying true to your unique vision. He also discusses his songwriting practice today, prioritizing playfulness, supporting young artists, and more. Ben and his wife, Ione Skye, host an awesome weekly podcast called Weirder Together, and their Weirder Together podcast network presents shows hosted by J. Mascis, Lou Barlow and Jello Biafra, among others. Ben will be on tour in September. Get tickets here.

KEY TAKEAWAYS: Often, you don’t need to understand the language of the art. You can feel the expression of what it is saying. It’s exciting to work with musicians who are willing to work outside of their comfort zone. Towns that invest in the arts thrive because they bring people who want to live there and visit. BIOGRAPHY: “Despechada means heartbroken or without your soul,” explained Ane Díaz about the title of her evocative new album, out June 9th via LaunchLeft. “It’s a very powerful word used for love affairs, but that’s also how I feel about losing my country.” The beloved homeland that inspired Díaz is her birthplace of Caracas, Venezuela, where she was first exposed to the music she would go on to reimagine for Despechada. And while she moved to the United States decades ago, and carved her own path in the alternative music scene, now she is melodiously facing her innate homesickness with these songs, handpicked by her mother, on an intimate Venezuelan folk LP. The result is a sonically lush and lyrically nostalgic journey through her heritage. “For people that lose their country, there’s always this sadness — this thing you can’t go back to,” said the singer and multi-instrumentalist. “That’s why I called it Despechada. “As time has passed, my memory of my country is fading. It’s almost like a loved one you’ve lost. I don’t want to forget their face or forget how they felt. So it’s this fear of losing my country that made me record this album.” The new record is being released by Rain Phoenix’s LaunchLeft, a Los Angeles-based label. Phoenix met Díaz in the late ‘80s in Gainesville, Florida’s thriving music scene. Their then-bands shared countless bills and even toured together. During the 1990s, Phoenix and Díaz connected again in The Causey Way, a punk-rock band on Jello Biafra’s Alternative Tentacles label. By 2001, Diaz had formed her own band, Producto, comprising original songs sung in both English and Spanish. Along the way, her dynamic discography has earned praise from the likes of Jonathan Richman of The Modern Lovers (with whom she opened for in 2018) and Michael Stipe of R.E.M. Looking back, Díaz said the long road through the American underground is what ultimately led her back to her Venezuelan roots. “After I went through a few genres, I realized, ‘this is me,’” Díaz reflected. “It’s my bliss. It’s really where my voice lives.” Aiding in the production, mixing and mastering of Despechada are Jim White, Paul Fonfara and John Keane. “I approached Jim White because his music is exactly what I wanted for these songs,” Díaz said. White is an acclaimed American singer-songwriter, visual artist and author. “He understands sounds that are non-traditional. He knows how to create sounds with tin cans and forks ... it’s a super organic feeling. I wanted him to help create an environment that wasn’t anywhere else, something altogether unique in regard to these traditional folk songs, and I think he masterfully delivered. ” Her family roots are further utilized through the album’s cover art, which features a painting by her brother Miguel. “We have the same nostalgia, he and I. You can see it in his paintings,” Díaz said. “This one is really beautiful. It’s my cousin Vanessa sleeping.” Though, that sense of family is something that pervades her work on Despechada — just ask her old friend Michael Stipe, who said this about her catalog: “To meet her, to see her perform, to hear her music, to hear her voice ... you sense something,” Stipe said. “There is a familiarity; there’s that kind of thing. That electric pulling … that you feel when amongst family.” Despechada TRACKLIST: Clavelito Colorado Pueblos Tristes Mi Nostalgia El Colibri Carmela Fulgida Luna Mi Negra Angelitos Negros Sombra De Los Medanos Duerme Negrito RESOURCE LINKS Podcast - LaunchLeft Jim White Music - Website Jim White - Facebook Ane Diaz Music - Website Ane Diaz - Instagram Ane Diaz - Twitter
