There's a lot going on in the independent music scene, and always has been. Question The Answers illuminates some of the people involved, and not just the musicians. Hosted by Andy Pohl (Tsunami Bomb | Sell The Heart Records), each episode he has a chat with the folks that run the labels that put out the albums, the people that take the photos you see online and in print, the people that set up and promote the shows you attend, and more. The scene is made up of such a huge array of creative people, all working together to make it happen, and we're here to celebrate them all.
Lauren Denitzio is the driving force behind the band Worriers. They began the band after having been in another band called The Measure, and have now released 3 full-length albums along with a few EPs, most recently a 5-song album of cover songs featuring their take on Rancid, Tom Petty, The New Pornographers and more. Now in their 10th year of existence, Worriers has established themselves as a true standout in the current punk scene, and have been able to partner with labels like No Idea, 6131, Don Giovanni, Side One Dummy along with self-releasing material. On top of this, they have worked with some really fantastic producers including Laura Jane Grace and John Agnello. The band is essentially Lauren's project, and is currently backed by Nick Psillas on bass and Mikey Erg on drums and Frank Piegaro (formerly of the band Ensign) on guitar. As Lauren describes in the episode, having a certain fluidity in the make up of the band has allowed them to take on more opportunities and not be as restricted by what sometimes conventional band structures might otherwise hinder. Currently living in Los Angeles, Lauren has roots in the East Coast having grown up in New Jersey and living in Brooklyn for many years after attending college. Besides performing full time in Worriers, They have an established career in illustration and design, which we talk about during the episode. Our guest today is Terry Smith, one half of the core team at Riot Squad Media. Herself and co-founder Laura Rose formed the multi-faceted agency out of a shared love for the music scene, punk rock, and a desire to contribute to them utilizing their strengths. Part PR agency, part website and design shop, part promotions group, Riot Squad Media kinda do it all. As Terry shares in the episode, they met while attending a music festival and became fast friends. Though she is located in Canada and Laura is in New York, the two of them have been able to stay connected and bring a lot to the punk scene. For example, every week they contribute a video which showcases two albums that they are currently stoked on, called Sunday Spin. This year, they are endeavoring on a major music festival, Camp Punksylvania. The fest features headliners Voodoo Glow Skulls, Bigwig, The Queers and Blanks 77, along with about 20 other bands! The logistics behind making this kind of thing work are pretty intense, as Terry attests, but they are up for the challenge! Neckscars are a four-piece post-hardcore band based out of New York City, with members living in the Northern side of the greater metro area. Having come together back in 2019 as long time friends and occasional bandmates, they have culminated in putting together a sound that is familiar to fans of Hot Water Music, Nothington, Leatherface & Seaweed, but they are far from a carbon copy of any of those bands. Principal songwriter/vocalist/guitarist Will Romeo and guitarist/backing vocalist Justin Parish join the podcast today to discuss the band's new album, Don't Panic, and also give us an insight into the beginnings of the band and where they are headed. The individual members of the band each perform in other projects alongside Neckscars, and are veterans of the music scene, showing a maturity in their songwriting and overall approach to the craft. During the pandemic, the band opted to push forward with the release of the album, partnering up with Sell The Heart Records (hey, that's us!!) and Engineer Records (UK). The album has seen some high praise, and with shows starting to slowly return, they have already gotten to work with shows in their home area with homies Jukebox Romantics, American Thrills, Oh! The Humanity and more, and they are certainly eager to get the band on the road. To hear or buy the new album Don't Panic - https://neckscars.bandcamp.com/album/... Phil Smith has had a wild musical journey. The Cincinnati, Ohio native started playing in punk and metal bands in his youth, including the one time Victory Records signed Corpus Christi. They managed to tour the country a few times and even had a video on MTV. But Phil wanted to expand his catalog, and for the last 10 years has been releasing self-produced rap & hip-hop albums under the moniker Eugenius. His most recent full-length effort, Midlife, was self-released in late 2020 but is now getting the vinyl treatment thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign and a partnership with Friend Club Records. The album is an introspective look at his own life, and acts as a follow up to a previous album called Of Age, released back in 2018. Described as a mix between Lupe Fiasco and Death Grips, Phil Smith has taken the stance of incorporating all of his influences into the music he produces, which is certainly present in tracks. As he describes in this episode, he likes to attempt to tell a story or show a "lyrical movie". In this episode we discuss his musical journey, and what he has coming up, which includes some collaborations with the likes of Nathan Gray (BoySetsFire). We dig into what it was like to be on Victory Records and the ups and downs of touring. We touch on his creative process and he of course offers some artists to check out as well as his 5 desert island albums. If there is one person that may be holding the ska community together, it may be Brent Friedman, who is our guest this week. Brent is known within the greater ska scene for being the drummer for We Are The Union, Skatune Network & Omnigone, but he also works very hard behind the scenes for Bad Time Records, Suicide Machine & Skatune Network among others. Growing up in Huntington Beach, CA, Brent fell in love with the ska scene, and soon became well known as "that ska guy" (much to his chagrin), eventually opting to wear it as a badge of pride and taking it as far as creating his social media handle @pleasetagmeinyourskaposts to solidify the truth that YES, he is in fact THAT SKA GUY! As a true defender of the genre, he has spent a good portion of his adult life affiliated with some of the biggest names in the ska world, and as is laid out in our discussion, he is beyond proud of where ska has gotten during the last few years, and his role in that. We spend some time learning about how he got involved in the various projects that he works with. We dig into the role that "Ska Twitter" plays in keeping things within the scene buzzing, and we reflect a bit on whether or not there is potential 'danger' of ska potentially falling out of favor again (psst... it never went away in the first place, so the answer is NO!). He also provides some artists that you should have on your radar, as well as his 5 desert island albums. Fest! Say it again with me... FEST! Unless you've been living under a rock, you're likely quite familiar with the annual punk rock festival which takes place in Gainesville, Florida. Our guest this week, Tony Weinbender, is the founder and principle organizer of the event. Coming up on it's 19th year (well, 20th if you include the pandemic version of Fest At Home), Fest has become one of the most highly sought after tickets in the country within the punk rock community. What began with a handful of local venues over a 1 night period has turned into a three-night blowout featuring over 100 bands across upwards of 20 venues within the college town that spawned the likes of Less Than Jake, Hot Water Music, Against Me! among others. Tony has had a life long love affair with the punk scene, having grown up in a small town in Virginia following the likes of Avail and Fugazi. He cut his teeth on the road working with Less Than Jake as a roadie, and spent many years as a label employee for Fueled By Ramen & No Idea Records. After branching off from one of his earlier endeavors with MACROCK (Mid Atlantic College Radio Conference), Fest has truly become his job, where he spends the entire year curating the lineup, planning with city officials and local businesses to make sure that everything runs smoothly. During this episode we dig into what he and the crew at Fest have been doing to ensure that this year's planned (and postponed from last year) event goes smoothly and safely. We also dig into the history of the event, and where it's going. He provides some pointers to bands that are interested in being part of the event, and of course, we dig into some bands he believes you should have on your radar, and his 5 desert island albums To see more about FEST - https://thefestfl.com/ To hear some of the music mentioned on this and our previous episodes, check out and follow this playlist on Spotify: https://bit.ly/3oI01ZU Question The Answers is co-sponsored by The Bad Copy and Sell The Heart Records, be sure to follow them as well to stay up to date on music news, reviews, and to check out the releases on our label. Ben Flanagan joins us this week, and we love to see it. Ben is the vocalist and bassist of the heavy hitting trio Black Map. The band is comprised of himself along with guitarist Mark Engles (of Dredg fame) and drummer Chris Robyn (of the band Far). As far as "super groups" go, these guys certainly fit the bill. A veteran of the rock n' roll lifestyle, Ben cut his teeth in the bands IO, The Trophy Fire, and The Actual prior to starting Black Map. He even spent some time as the "5th member" of Dredg for a spell, touring with them all over the world. Black Map have released two full length albums, some split records, and a few digital singles, as well as some awesome cover songs, most recently a mashup of Billy Idol's "Eyes Without A Face" and U2's "Exit" (with a touch of Jane's Addiction's "Mountain Song" thrown in for good measure). Beyond his work as a musician, he has worked for many years as a member of the booking team at San Francisco's famed club Bottom of the Hill, which we talk about in this episode. He also provides a few bands that he feels should be on everyone's radar, and his 5 desert island albums. Crimson Riot hail from sunny (and too hot for my blood) Las Vegas, the city of sin. The 3-piece pop-punk outfit was born out of wanting to create original material outside of their professional gig as a full-time cover band, called The Roxy Gunn Project. The members of the band have been lighting up the Vegas Strip for many years now, to pretty huge crowds. A family affair, the band is comprised of singer/guitarist Roxy, her husband and bassist/co-vocalist Chris, and her father Ryan on drums. For them, music is literally a way of life, which is pretty much the dream that most musicians strive for. When they aren't performing hours long cover sets to the Vegas patrons, they are mostly focusing on getting Crimson Riot out into the world. The band just released a brand new album via Die Laughing Records, called It Took An Apocalypse, which you should listen to right meow! Obviously the pandemic caused a huge stir for musicians everywhere, but for them it was even tougher since their literal bread and butter was taken away from them when Las Vegas shut down... so the band got crafty and decided to pivot to doing live streams, eventually landing on Twitch. They will spend upwards of 6-10 hours at time taking cover requests from viewers, which for many musicians would be an unattainable feat, but for these seasoned professionals, it's all in a days work To checkout Crimson Riot - https://crimsonriot.com/ To checkout The Roxy Gunn Project - https://www.roxygunnproject.com/ To hear some of the music mentioned on this and our previous episodes, check out and follow this playlist on Spotify: https://bit.ly/3oI01ZU Question The Answers is co-sponsored by The Bad Copy and Sell The Heart Records, be sure to follow them as well to stay up to date on music news, reviews, and to check out the releases on our label. Josh Goldman is someone that has found a way to make punk rock his job, and he takes it very seriously. Mind you, he still manages to have a lot of fun while performing in his bands The Raging Nathans, The Dopamines and others. Along with that, he owns and operates a killer independent punk label called Rad Girlfriend Records, who have worked with the likes of DFMK, Mikey Erg, The Queers, Western Settings, Strangelight, and more. What started in earnest as a way to release his own records, Rad Girlfriend has turned into quite a record making machine, seeing year over year growth, with this most recent crazy dumpster fire of a year being no exception. Many of his most recent albums sold out while in pre-order, forcing re-presses before they were even released. His main band The Raging Nathans just released a brand new ripper of an album (with a track from that album able to be heard at the end of the podcast), and he's not showing any signs of slowing down at all. During the episode, we talk about what it's like to run a record label... the good, the bad, the ugly. We chat a bit about what it's like to meet your heroes.... also the good, the bad, the ugly. I am thrilled to have my long time friend Kevin Sur as the featured guest this week. Kevin and I go back well over 20 years as friends, and he has always been someone that I could count on to give me sound advice about the music business, and guidance about what to do with the bands I was in. Kevin Sur, affectionally known for many years among his musical peers as "Bubba", was a member of the beloved Sacramento punk outfit Luckie Strike. He cut his teeth in that band over the course of 7 years, where they were true road dogs, touring constantly, and doing everything they could in a pre-internet world to stay in constant contact with their fans. After Luckie Strike called it a day, Kevin ventured to Seattle to focus on school, but eventually found his way back to the Bay Area (his hometown area), and started a new project called Indian Valley Line with two longtime friends. A far cry from the pop-punk of his former band, Indian Valley Line blended roots-Americana, indie-folk which paired well with Kevin's newly found skills as a composer. Heading back to Seattle, Kevin turned his sights to music promotion, starting Artist Home. Artist Home focuses mostly on their annual music festivals these days, but they also serve as a professional consultancy for artists that are trying to grow their careers. Kevin is definitely the right kind of person you'd want on your team for this, I know from experience. To hear Luckie Strike - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-MCH... Hailing from the Lone Star State, Steadfast HTX are our featured guests this week. Made up of four long-time friends, the band self-released their debut album Transmitters in 2020, just before the pandemic. While they had some big plans to promote and tour for the album, those were obviously put on the shelf for the time being. But the band is ready to make up for lost time, and get on the road once shows begin happening again. Along with being self-released, the band recorded the album themselves. Charlie Price (drums) production on the album provides a gritty yet clean quality to the songs, reminiscent of early Social Distortion & Rancid, The Drowns and The Clash. Principal songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Jason Bancroft's gravely vocals blend well alongside Travis Smith's buzzy guitars and Andrew Wupper's steady bass. We spend some time talking about what it is to be a band from Texas; everything from having to deal with the length of drives to get outside of the state, to the phenomenon of having Wal-Mart sized gas stations (wtf??). We talk about some of the bands from Texas that are doing awesome things, and what their plans are for the coming months post-pandemic. From the desert heat of Arizona comes The Venomous Pinks, our guests this week. The three-piece punk band have been a staple in the Phoenix scene for many years, and through a few lineup changes, are currently made up of Drea, Gaby & Cassie. The band recently released a brand new live EP, Based on a True Story, which was recorded during a tour to the Pacific Northwest with the folks at Bridge City Sessions. The album is a fantastic representation of what this band is all about with it's raw energy, sensible hooks, and urgency. The Venomous Pinks have seen their star rising over the last few years, having made appearances at Punk Rock Bowling, Rebellion, and even as guests at a Bernie Sanders rally in their home state (woah!!). During our episode we talk about the history of the band and detail their latest releases. We find out the origin of their name and dig into some of the other projects that the individual members have going on. We of course also find out about some other bands that they think you should check out, and what their 5 desert island albums would be. Kevin Day joins us this week on the podcast. On top of being a member of the much loved indie-punk band Aspiga, he is also behind the (mostly) solo project Graduation Speech, which just released a brand new EP via Jetsam-Flotsam Records. Beyond being an active musician, Kevin Day is also a public relations manager with his company Part-Time PR. Seeing that there was a need for artists that might not otherwise be able to get the coverage that other bands with larger budgets might be able to afford, Kevin puts his extra time and sweat into helping artists that he believes in so that they can get in front of as many eyes and ears as possible. And I can say from my own experience having worked with him that he is great at this. During this episode, we discuss his time as a musician and as a pr agent, and how those two distinct positions intertwine. We talk about the New Jersey music scene and how it's changed over the years, and touch on his beginnings working with Jump Start Records while he was in college. We of course discuss some of the bands he is fond of, as well as his 5 desert island album picks. He's a current member of the following bands: Dead Ending, Airstream Futures, Heavy Seas, Her Head's On Fire, All Eyes West, Tight Night, and Moral Mazes.... phew. He is also an alumni of many other bands, including the likes of The Bomb & Noise By Numbers. As he points out in this episode, it's just something that feels natural to him to have so much going on, something that many musicians would struggle to juggle (hahaha, struggle juggle - new ska band???) On top of being a busy musician, Jeff is also a recording and mixing engineer, working with a ton of rad bands over the years, including Typesetter, Wet Tropics, and more. He is also active in the skateboard scene, having spent time in his younger years as a sponsored member of several teams, which we discuss in the episode. Joining us this week is the one, the only, Mike Terry. Mike is the guitarist and co-vocalist of The Jukebox Romantics, an energetic pop-punk band from New York. The band's most recent album, a split EP with German punk outfit The Sewer Rats, came out in 2018, so the band is poised to bring some new material to the masses soon Mike is a seasoned road dog, having played hundreds of shows with Jukebox Romantics over the years. We discuss the early days of the band where he details their gung-ho spirit of touring 10 months out of the year simply because they could. As an East Coast "kid", Mike and I discuss some of the differences (or at least perceived differences) between the two coasts and the subsequent music scenes. Is there a defining characteristic that separates the two? Mike is also a die-hard wrestling fan, so it was fun to nerd out with him a bit about that. My guest this week is Ryan Noble. Ryan has been involved in a number of bands over the years, most recently as the bassist for The Soft White Sixties. Prior to this, he spent many years as the front person for DESA, which was a band that spawned off of the beloved Bay Area Ska-core band Link 80. Ryan is one of the most talented people I have the pleasure of calling a friend. I've known him for about 25 years now, and was fortunate enough to play in two bands with him prior to his joining Link 80. The Blast Bandits and O.F.S. were both ska bands based in the Central Valley of California, and we had some truly great times. Ryan has written some of my favorite lyrics, and I've always appreciated his unique perspective on life. During this episode, we talk about what it was like to jump from an obscure band cutting it's teeth into the spotlight as the lead singer of a road tested band. Katie Perry is someone you want on your team. As a booking agent and talent buyer, Kat (as she is often referred to as) is no stranger to having to juggle multiple balls at one time while keeping her cool. As a member of the Crawlspace Booking team, she helps bands like Murphy's Law, Days N Daze, Cock Sparrer, and even my band Tsunami Bomb to find shows and manage that process. As a talent buyer, Kat has the job of navigating the process of booking the show, dealing with managers/booking agents and artists, handling contract negotiation, keeping track of hundreds of emails every week, which takes the patience of a saint, so St. Katie Perry it is! During the pandemic, Kat has been a huge advocate for the work that NIVA and NITO have been doing to raise awareness for small, independent music clubs and workers in the music industry. With her job effectively going away during this time, she is thankful that we are making headway to being able to move towards having live music, but as she shares, she is still cautious as to how fast we should move. During our episode, we discuss her role in the music scene and what drives her to do this kind of work. We dive into some of the challenges that arise as part of the process, and hopefully shed some light on what bands may want to consider when working with a booking agent. Kat also shares some of her current favorite artists to look out for, as well as her 5 Desert Island album pics. Matt Kadi is many things; a drummer, a bassist, a photographer. Since he was a teenager, he has been an active member of the punk scene, from his start playing drums in Monster Squad all the way through playing bass in his newest band Holehog. Along the way, he has also been a member of bands like Great Apes (Asian Man Records), Build Us Airplanes (Sell The Heart Records), Anne Ramsey, Know Secrets, and more, taking him all around the world in the process. As a photographer, he has taken an active role in documenting the scene, which as we discuss in the episode, is such a vital and inspiring job to take on. Taking inspiration from the likes of Murray Bowles, Matt is rarely without his camera when he attends a live show, and he has taken his passion and turned it into a way to not only express himself artistically, but to supplement his income as well. We spend some time discussing his time in the bands he's played, and go over some of the inspiration that led him to becoming a photographer. He tells me about the time he was in a VERY popular music video for a HUGE rock band, and of course we go over some bands he thinks you should have on your radar, and his Desert Island albums You can hear his new band Holehog here -https://holehogpunx.bandcamp.com/ To hear Monster Squad - https://monstersquad.bandcamp.com/ You can purchase his photography here - https://destroyartinc.bigcartel.com/ To hear some of the music mentioned on this and our previous episodes, check out and follow this playlist on Spotify: https://bit.ly/3oI01ZU Question The Answers is co-sponsored by The Bad Copy and Sell The Heart Records, be sure to follow them as well to stay up to date on music news, reviews, and to check out the releases on our label. Chicago's Kali Masi have been churning out some killer punk rock jams for nearly a decade now. The four-piece outfit have recently released their new album [laughs] via Take This To Heart Records, their first full length album in 4 years. Drawing easy comparisons to other Mid-West bands like Hey Mercedes, Alkaline Trio or Lawrence Arms, Kali Masi's music is layered with rich, melodic instrumentation, vocal hooks for days, and a pop-sensibility that still stays true to their punk roots. Sam and John stopped by the show to talk about the history of the band and the origins of the band name, what they've been doing during the pandemic, and to discuss some of their favorite bands coming out of the Chicago area. We spend some time discussing what touring post-pandemic may looking like, and they give me their 5 "trapped on a desert island" albums. Brian Moss joins the podcast this week to discuss the release of the new album from his project Hanalei, called Black Snow. Hanalei is a mostly solo project that Brian has been doing for nearly two decades, allowing him to flex his creative muscle with songs that might otherwise not fit in with the other projects that he was doing at any given time. This new album features several guest musicians, including longtime collaborators Ryan Marshall (Great Apes) and Josh Staples (The Velvet Teen/The New Trust). On the creation of the new album, as Brian describes it, "I began writing Black Snow roughly two years ago after finding out my wife was pregnant. The process served as a means of coping with the relentless anxiety and bouts of depression that polluted my expected joy. How could I bring a child into a world on the verge of collapse?" Not unlike other musical projects he's been involved in, the songs are written in a narrative voice, in this case set in the not-too-distant future during a turbulent time for the environment. Among those many projects that Brian Moss has been involved in over the years include his bands Great Apes (Asian Man Records), The Ghost (Solidarity Records), Olehole! (Underground Communique Records), Sub-Dio, The Wunder Years (Tomato Head / Side With Us Records) and more. Black Snow is available to pre-order on vinyl now via A-F Records, here - https://a-frecords.limitedrun.com/ To hear some of the music mentioned on this and our previous episodes, check out and follow this playlist on Spotify: https://bit.ly/3oI01ZU Question The Answers is co-sponsored by The Bad Copy and Sell The Heart Records, be sure to follow them as well to stay up to date on music news, reviews, and to check out the releases on our label. We are fortunate to be joined this week by Jesse Townley. Jesse, also known in the scene as Jesse Luscious, is a veteran of the punk scene, having been a member of The Criminals (Lookout Records), The Gr'ups, Blatz (Alternative Tentacles) & The Frisk (Adeline Records). Currently, he performs in The Pathogens and Scene Killers. Jesse moved to the East Bay Area as a young man and become entrenched in the thriving punk scene surrounding the 924 Gilman Street Project. Over the years, he has been a volunteer at the club, and an active member of the Berkeley rent board. In addition to all of this, he has also been a DJ on various radio stations for years, and a reviewer for magazines like Maximum Rock and Roll. Currently, Jesse lives in the U.K. and works as a project and sales coordinator for Packaged Sounds, a vinyl manufacturing plant, which is a great fit for him having spent many years working as a release manager at Fat Wreck Chords, Alternative Tentacles and Lookout Records. Rachel Taft is the founder of the Baltimore based non-profit Feed The Scene. For over a decade, she and a small (but growing) group of people have been supporting the independent music scene by providing a place to sleep for artists traveling through the greater Baltimore area at her home, which can hold upwards of 20+ people. Feed The Scene also provides meals to these artists, which for anyone that has experienced life on the road is always such a welcome treat as there is not always a guarantee that venues will provide food. Born out of a turbulent time in her life, Rachel has been able to house well over 1700 different artists/bands over the years, often times having multiple bands of varying genres in her house on any given night. Everyone from The Jukebox Romantics to Joey Cape & Chris Cresswell to A Wilhelm Scream have stayed at her house, often on multiple occasions. Beyond the housing and feeding, Feed The Scene are also promote shows in their area. All-in-all, Rachel and her crew have become an integral part of the Baltimore music scene. As we discuss in this episode, it's a labor of love that she has embraced, and as was part of her main goal, was a way for her to get through some tough times by doing something incredible positive. Audio Karate made waves as members of the Kung-Fu Records roster back the 90s/early 00s. During their initial run from 1995-2005, they released two full length albums and toured heavily to support those releases with the likes of The Vandals, Tsunami Bomb & more in the U.S., Europe and Japan. Fast-forward to 2018, the band announced that they were going to be re-issuing their debut album Space Camp via Wiretap Records/Hidden Homes along with a string of shows with The Descendents and appearances at Fest. Not long after that, they announced a new album, Malo, which was released via A-F Records/SBAM/Wiretap Records. Additionally, they recently self-released a re-issue of their sophomore effort, Lady Melody, to much fanfare. On this episode, we discuss their time as a band and what it was like to come back after such a long break. This week, Mateo Campos and Alex Botkin of the band Sarchasm visit the show. Sarchasm, a self-described 'Bummer Pop' band from the East Bay area, met when they were still in junior high. Brothers Mateo and Stevie joined forces with Alex as teenagers, initially starting off as most bands do performing covers of their favorite bands, going to shows together, and slowly but surely integrating themselves into the scene. Fast forward 10+ years later, and they've now released multiple albums, been on several tours, and are starting to make quite a name for themselves in the independent music scene Their most recent self-titled album was released via Asian Man Records. As the band points out, becoming part of that roster of artists was both a surreal and validating experience, noting that it's a label that they grew up following and admiring. Along with other Bay Area upstarts Grumpster, Get Married, The Moore Family Band & Small Crush, Sarchasm represent the 'new guard' of artists on Asian Man, continuing in their tradition of working with great bands. Outside of the band, they keep busy as long-time volunteers at The Gilman Street Project in Berkeley, the storied co-op that has hosted just about any punk band you can name and then some. Along with that, they have their own label called Lavasocks records, who have released albums from the likes of Lousy Advice, Slumped and Danger Inc., and have also produced re-issues of classic Lookout! Records albums from Tilt and Corrupted Morals. Ricky Schmidt has been a busy man. On top of being a member of the bands Western Settings & Hey, Chels!, he managed has officially entered the world of solo artist with a new album, Palm Trees, that was released in 2020. The album is certainly much different than the aforementioned bands, blending a bit more garage-pop, surf and noise elements into the fold. As is discussed in our episode, Ricky found this to not only be a way to use his newly found extra time to it's fullest, but also gave him an opportunity to really flex his artistic muscles a bit and explore new ground. Ricky moved around a lot growing up, but settled in San Diego, and has lived and worked there for many years now. A staple in the local music scene, he is a staunch champion of his peers during this episode gives shout outs to many of them along the way. This week, Tristan & Hunter Martinez of the band Decent Criminal are our guests. They recently announced a new EP, which is set to come out in early March of this year via Sell The Heart Records (US) and Gunner Records (EU). The EP is a testament to the band's willingness to evolve their sound and incorporate new approaches to songwriting. That being said, it still retains many of the same qualities that fans have come to love about the band. Decent Criminal got together a little over 10 years ago, and have seen a steady growth in their fanbase along the way. With a a few lineup changes over the years, the band now consists of brothers Hunter and Tristan on drums & guitar/vocals respectively, along with Brian Gellman on guitar/vocals, and Jesse Hernandez on bass/vocals. 2020 was going to be a HUGE year for the band, with appearances at Punk Rock Bowling & Pouzza Fest, along with tours with the likes of Dead Bars, Ariel Salad, and more. They managed to weather the year away from touring by continuing to write new music and it's likely that we'll see another full length from them before too long, but this new EP will be a great dose of new tuneage from them in the meantime. During this episode we talk a bit about the new EP and some of the tactics they've been using over the years with their songwriting. We learn about how COVID-19 has directly impacted them, and we of course go over some of their favorite bands to look out for and their Top 5 Desert Island albums. Adam Gecking is the founder of Say-10 Records, a mostly punk-rock record label based in Virginia which he started in 2007 as a means of releasing music from bands that he loved. 14 years later and he's still going strong, having released well over 90 releases since the inception of the label. Recent releases from Will Wood, a split featuring Love Equals Death & The Static Age, Shehehe & even Green Jelly showcase the assortment of styles that the label has to offer. Beyond music, Say-10 has also released a line-up of skateboards featuring artwork associated with artists ranging from The Lawrence Arms to Lagwagon to Great Apes to Murder By Death. Recently, Say-10 has started a new project called Get Stoked which involves lathe-cut vinyl bundles in short-runs from a variety of artists, the first of which features The Eradicator, Decide By Friday, and Pedals on a Pirate Ship. This week, Andy is joined by Jack Shirley, owner and engineer at Atomic Garden Studios in Oakland, CA. He has engineered, produced and mastered records for a dynamic group of artists, everyone from Jeff Rosenstock to Deafheaven to Western Addiction and all sorts of bands in-between. Also a musician himself, Jack cut his teeth in the post-hardcore band Comadre, who released 4 albums in their tenure and toured all over the U.S. and Japan. Most recently, he has been performing with the bands Everybody Row and Dangers. As a producer and engineer, Jack Shirley tends to take a more hands off approach, not unlike another well known engineer/producer - Steve Albini. He tends to let the music come together more organically rather than spending a ton of time on production just for the sake of production, though he'll certainly offer his opinion when asked for it. There have been several albums that he has worked on that have landed on a grip of 'Best Of' lists such as Deafheaven's Sunbather & New Bermuda, as well as Jeff Rosenstock's No Dream & POST-. Along with well over 50 albums on his resume, he has certainly earned his spot as a highly sought after producer within the punk, hardcore and metal scenes. This week, Andy is joined by Chris Appelgren. Chris took the reins at Lookout Records in 1997 after founder Larry Livermore decided he wanted to move on from the label. Having worked for the label for many years and doing artwork for many of the bands on the label, it seemed like a great opportunity. Under his watch (along with co-owners Molly Neuman and Cathy Bauer), Lookout managed to keep serving up tasty punk rock records from label vets like The Mr. T Experience and Screeching Weasel, to more angular indie-rock bands like Pretty Girls Make Graves and Engine Down. Unfortunately, due to a downward trend in album sales, and being unable to fulfill some royalty obligations to some of the label's top selling bands (Green Day, Operation Ivy, etc), the label had to close shop in 2012. But man, what a run! Besides being co-owner of one of the most iconic punk rock labels of all time, Chris is also a musician. He was the front person for The Pattern and The Peechees, played drums in The Potatomen, among other projects. Nowadays, he continues to work with bands doing graphic art for the likes of The Once and Future Band, and also has a musical project with friends covering obscure songs from the 60s and 70s. During this episode, we discuss his time with Lookout Records, as well as his time performing in The Pattern. We also discuss some of his favorite artists and he gives me his 5 desert island albums. This week, Andy is joined by Ray Drunktank, the drummer of Dutch Skatepunk outfit Drunktank, and also the co-founder of Epic Merch Store. Drunktank have been bringing their melodic metal/punk hybrid sounds to audiences all across Europe, Canada and the U.S since 2003, with several releases under their belts, the most recent being The Return of the Infamous Four. Citing bands like No Fun At All, Lagwagon, Iron Maiden and 3 Inches of Blood as major influences, they are technical, tight, and really fun to listen to. They have new music in the works and are hoping to release it when the pandemic is over. On top of being a musician, Ray is also a shrewd businessman, having cofounded the print-on-demand company Epic Merch Store. Building off of an already existing model where instead of keeping a large inventory on hand, you instead literally print new merch as orders come in, which can be a huge win for bands that don't have the capital to pay for merch up front or have a good means to store or distribute it. We talk at length about the band and their history, as well as what they are hoping to do in the future. In this episode, we go over what some of the inspiration for starting Epic Merch Store was and where that company is headed, and the importance of paying attention to the business side of the music world. Ray shares with me some of his favorite bands as well as his 5 desert island albums. This week, Andy is joined by Aaron-Rev Peters, the guitarist/co-vocalist of Seattle punk band The Drowns. The band has been gaining a large following over the last few years, with a recent appearance at Punk Rock Bowling, tours all over the United States, Europe and Japan, and releases on Pirates Press Records, Bypolar Records, Gunner Records, and more. Aaron cut his teeth in the band Success, also based out of Seattle, and has called the Pacific Northwest his home for the majority of his life. We touch on what it was like to grow up in the scene that gave us Grunge and how it has changed in recent years. Aaron give us a bit of perspective about what it is to be a part of the 'street punk' scene, and reflects on some of his favorite bands within that scene. He also shares some memories of having performed on an Aircraft Carrier while appearing at Pirates Press's Rock The Ship festival. This week, Andy is stoked to have Philadelphia ska band Catbite as guests. The 4-piece outfit have been making waves within the ska/punk scene over the last few years, making a huge splash with their debut self-titled album, which was released in 2019 via Bad Time Records. In 2020, the band had big touring plans, which were unfortunately sidelined from the pandemic, but that didn't stop the band from delivering a TON of output in the form of a split 7-inch EP with label mates Omnigone, several music videos, some cover songs, collaborations with the likes of Mike Park, and even a livestream performance or two. We caught the band just after returning home from recording their follow up album in Long Beach, CA, and we go into a bit of history of the band, along with some discussion on where they are hoping to go. We talk about how the ska scene is just THRIVING right now, and we go over some of their favorite artists and albums. This week, we have a special episode where Andy and a solid crew of guests break down their favorite albums of 2020. As crazy of a year as it has been, it has been a fantastic year for music, with a grip of incredible albums being released. Andy is joined by Kendra Sheetz (editor of The Bad Copy), Rob Castellon (founder of Wiretap Records), John Gentile (feature editor of Punknews.org), three of the four members of Philadelphia ska band Catbite, and Dominic Davi (bassist of Tsunami Bomb). Aaron Carnes loves ska. He loves it so much, that he has dedicated the last 7 years of his life putting together his soon to be released book, In Defense of Ska. The book is a love letter to the genre, diving very deep into the music's history and cultural impact. In the book, Aaron takes us from the dancehalls of Jamaica to the working class neighborhoods of London and over to the orange groves of Anaheim as he delivers tales of the various groups of bands that helped to showcase the music since the 1950's. There is an entire chapter dedicated to defending Reel Big Fish, a great story about how a little known band in the East Bay area that was a HUGE inspiration for the lads in Operation Ivy & Rancid, along with the story of how Let's Go Bowling avoided being gunned down in their van after a gig. Lisa Root takes on the monolithic task of running New Noise Magazine, a music centered magazine that has been around now for 7 years and is going strong. As the founder and editor-in-chief, Lisa leads the ship and it's crew through the crazy deadline cycle and manages to make a significantly positive impact on the music scene on a really large scale, covering interview, articles and features on various bands, as well as a ton of album and live show (when they were happening) reviews. Thankfully, she admits that she has the right personality for the job, and her love of the music scene and punk rock ethos carry her through the journey of creating each issue. During this episode, we talk about what it takes to get each issue out, along with what it means to be working in print media during the time of Covid. She gives me some history of the magazine and we discuss where it's heading. Lisa also shares with me some of her favorite artists and her desert island albums. This week, Andy is joined by Devon Kay. Devon is the singer & guitarist for Devon Kay & the Solutions, not to mention a member of Direct Hit! (Fat Wreck Chords). The Solutions have recently released a new album, Limited Joy, which is out now on A-F Records. The Chicago band blends punk with elements of power-pop, new-wave and even some influence from ska to formulate a truly original sound. During the pandemic, Devon has been keeping busy as a content creator, and not just in a music sense. He dove head first into the world of Twitch streaming and we spend some time during the episode exploring that world. We go over some of the finer details of recording an album. He shares with me some of his favorite bands that people may not have heard about, and as usual he shares his 5 desert island albums. This week, Andy is joined by Jeff Berman of the band Divided Heaven. They just released a brand new single called "They Poisoned Our Fathers", out now via Smartpunk Records. The song is a scathing commentary on the division that has taken place in the United States, and features Lydia Loveless as an accompanying vocalist. Divided Heaven have released several records over the years, most recently the EP Cold War Hangover, and the full-length COLD WAR via Wiretap Records. During this episode, Jeff and I discuss the new single and what it's message encompasses. We dig into how there is a glut of artists making content, but not always quality content and why that can be harmful sometimes. We go over a few of Jeff's favorite artists that you may have never heard of, and he also gives me his top 5 desert island albums. You can hear the new single at the end of this episode, but can also purchase/stream it here (along with their back catalog): https://dividedheaven.bandcamp.com/ To hear some of the music mentioned on this and our previous episodes, check out and follow this playlist on Spotify: https://bit.ly/3oI01ZU Question The Answers is co-sponsored by The Bad Copy and Sell The Heart Records, be sure to follow them as well to stay up to date on music news, reviews, and to check out the releases on our label. This week, recording engineer and producer Scott Goodrich joins us. Scott has been an in-house engineer at Bay Area's Nu-Tone studios as well as recording out of his home studio for quite awhile now, and has amassed a very impressive resume of clients. Artists like Broadway Calls, Direct Hit!. Decent Criminal, Unconditional Arms, The Story So Far, among others have benefited from Scott's skills and knowledge. During this episode, we spent some time discussing the benefits of using a recording studio vs a home recording set up, and whether or not traditional studios may be necessary for most artists. We dive into a discussion of quality over quantity, and he provides some advice for any artists looking to record. He shares with me a few of his favorite artists that you may not have heard of, as well as his top 5 desert island albums. Mike Cubillos is a veteran in the PR (public relations) world. Before founding his own company, Earshot Media, he spent many years as an in-house PR agent for major labels like Mercury Records, and independent labels like Mojo, working with bands like Reel Big Fish, Goldfinger, Cherry Poppin' Daddies & more. Working in a field that is heavily laden with rejection and monotonous work, Mike is truly a hero within the scope of the music scene, handling the Herculean task of getting his clients work noticed by media outlets and giving them the most exposure in the shortest amount of time, since we all know, there is so much white noise out there. I've worked with Mike a few times, and his work ethic is top notch. I was happy that he was willing to share some stories and discuss his role within the music scene. He gives me some of his favorite albums and local bands, too. This week, Andy is joined by Alan Snodgrass, a photo journalist for New Noise Magazine (among other publications) that has covered just about every band you can think of over the years. Having fallen into the punk scene as a young man, his love of the music has stayed with him and he can be often found at a local punk show snapping away, both professionally and just for the simple joy of going. I've had the pleasure of getting to know Alan over the years, and he's a great guy, with a lot of rad stories to share. I think he has a real knack for capturing bands live, and during this episode he was kind enough to share some of his photos with us, which you will see during the interview. This week, Andy is joined by Linh Le, the bassist and co-vocalist for Fat Wreck Chords recording artists Bad Cop / Bad Cop. BC/BC have had a tremendous last few years, becoming one of the most notable punk bands to make the rounds, playing just about every punk festival there is, and just released their latest full length, The Ride, via Fat. Linh is a ball of energy, and we had a really great conversation where we discussed how the last few years have been for the band and how this latest album came together and the journey to ensure that the album remained representative of their band and not just a carbon copy of "popular" punk bands. A staunch advocate for immigrants rights, we spent a little time discussion the current administrations policy and how it has negatively impacted the country, and we share our thoughts on said administration (no holding back!). Linh shares some of her favorite unsung bands and also gives me her top five desert island albums. This week, Andy is joined by John Gentile, a long standing feature editor at Punknews. For those unfamiliar, Punknews is a music news website that has been going strong for over 20 years, centered mainly on artists within the punk rock scene, and has been one of the main sources for up-to-date information about bands across many sub-genres ranging from hardcore to ska to shoegaze to noise. John has been contributing there for much of it's existence and has some great stories to tell about his time. We dive into the history of the website and go into some of the bigger stories that they've "broke" over the years. We also chat about why we are still dealing with the punk police after all of these years, and how the newer generation of punks aren't necessarily following in those footsteps. He gives me a nice breakdown about the Philadelphia music scene, and provides his top ten albums. To see the site, go to https://www.punknews.org. TW/CW: This episode features some discussion about depression and suicide. This week, Andy is joined by Mike Henneberger, author of Rock Bottom At The Renaissance. The book is a bit of a mixtape, a bit of a memoir, and ultimately a window into the world of a young man trying to navigate life while juggling a career and his romantic life. I really enjoyed the book, and I loved how he tied some of his favorite songs/bands into the story that he's telling. Mike is an Emmy award winning producer with credits from Comedy Central, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Spin, and Vice under his belt. He has toured the country playing in bands, and music is a HUGE part of his life in virtually every way. During our talk, we discuss some of the ways that we have both dealt with anxiety and depression, as well as tools that we have used to stay on top of it. And of course, we go over some of his favorite bands and albums. This week, Andy chats with Caitlin Edwards, the singer/guitarist of the Chicago ska-punk band Bumsy and The Moochers. Caitlin is also co-founder of the Punk The Burbs music festival, which would have been celebrating it's 4th year if the COVID-19 pandemic had not forced it's cancellation. We talk a bit about what it's been like to be a ska band during a time when ska had fallen out of favor with a lot of audiences. We also dig into the joy and pain of running a music festival.
