Today, we're joined by 5 x logie winner and one of Australia's most beloved actresses, Asher Keddie. Asher is usually more reserved when it comes to her private life but it was really refreshing to hear her say that she is feeling more and more comfortable actually speaking about herself and what her motivations and ambitions are, rather than just about the characters she plays. Asher has a reputation of playing complex and layered, strong female characters in shows like ‘Offspring’, ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ and she’s now back as Evelyn Jones in Season 2 of ‘Strife’, a series inspired by Mia Freedman's memoir Work, Strife, Balance. The show delves into the life of a modern woman juggling the demands of career, motherhood, and personal identity in the digital age. We’ve had quite a lot of conversations on the podcast about the expectations of us to ‘do it all’ and make it look easy and we wanted to speak with Asher today about motherhood and the complexities of juggling her career alongside family life. We spoke about: The ‘actual’ story of how Asher got into acting (and it’s not the narrative that’s circulated) Why Asher chose to stay acting in Australia rather than going to Hollywood or NY The ‘care less’ factor you gain as you get a bit older and feel more confident What drew Asher to Strife Dealing with rejection Whether the ‘expiration date’ of women is shifting Mum guilt and making work decisions with family in mind The evolution in her relationship in the last 14 years Season two of STRIFE is out now on Binge and it’s brilliant! “There was always a way that music could speak to me,” says Youth Lagoon's Trevor Powers. “I was really shy as a kid and I had a lot on my mind that I didn't know how to get out. And music felt like one of those cheat codes where I felt like what I could say through one song was a lifetime worth of what was in my brain that I couldn't say any other way.” I was instantly captivated by Youth Lagoon's music when I first heard it more than a decade ago: Trevor Powers' plaintive, childlike voice, the dreaminess and heady sonic textures of his music, the candor in his storytelling. In the years since the Boise, Idaho artist's 2011 debut album, he has continually deepened his ability to make music that soothes and haunts at the same time. His latest album, Rarely Do I Dream, is his best yet, and one of my favorite LPs of 2025 so far. In the conversation in episode 121, Trevor talks about how discovering a trove of old home movies helped inspire the new album, and remind him of the importance of finding the true feeling at the center of a memory. He also discusses growing up hearing artists like Elvis and The Beach Boys and John Denver while being homeschooled, before finally being exposed to bands like Korn and the Offspring and Blink-182 when he eventually attended high school, and later discovering artists like My Bloody Valentine and Oingo Boingo thanks to his uncle introducing him to more cutting edge music. “There's always something that's coming in that's changing not only my thought process, but there's something internally that's awakening my spirit in these new ways and pushing me in all these different directions,” he says. “There could be an endless amount of lifetimes and I can't get it all out, what's up here.”Trevor also shares why he decided to "kill off" the Youth Lagoon Project several years ago, and to instead record under his own name for awhile, and why he chose to resurrect the moniker back in 2022. Youth Lagoon is on tour in the U.S. until mid-May. Get more info here.

1. Abraham's offspring are free for those who believe. Being a son of Abraham does not make you free.2. Abraham's offspring hear the truth, truth is found in Jesus. Those who are only the "children" of Abraham do their fathers work.3. Abraham's offspring rejoice in the Day of Christ.
When the offspring is so hideous and so dreadful! John Angell James, "Sorrow for the Death of Friends"How dreadful is the nature of sin! Sin is the parent of death. Death is the first-born of sin. What must be the parent--when the offspring is so hideous and so dreadful! Who can have watched the harbingers of death--the groans, the pains, the dying strife--without being struck with the fearful nature of man's revolt from God?Death in itself, and by itself--is horrid and revolting! To see all this inflicted upon a Christian, a child of God, an heir of glory; to see no way even to the kingdom of God, to the realms of immortality, but this dark valley of corruption, earth, and worms--this gives us a most impressive idea of the dreadful nature of sin! How such scenes should enlarge our views of the malignity of sin, and embitter our hearts against it!O sin--sin! What have you done!

We're back. Episode 52 marks the reunion of Cecil, Gordo, Huff, and Mauro, and we're diving face-first into the pit with 20 punk songs that shaped us, scarred us, or at least pissed someone off. Each of us brought five tracks—from classics like the Dead Kennedys and Misfits, to deep cuts from Swingin' Utters, face to face, and even a Butthole Surfers pick Mauro has to defend (and yes, he will). There's yelling. There's swearing. There's nostalgia. And there's the kind of playlist that makes you want to dig out your old plaid pants and jump in a mosh pit. Punk's not dead—it's just been waiting for us to get our shit together and hit record again.

Up To Jerusalem - Teaching 9 Scripture - Matthew 25-26, Luke 22 We continue with Jesus' Mt. Olivet Discourse where He is talking about the future end of Jerusalem that did happen in 70AD several decades after His ascension and as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophets. Jesus is also talking of the preparation for His second coming and the importance of being awake. Pastor reviews the conclusion of the Parable of the Ten Virgins with Jesus' words,”Therefore keep watch because you do not know the day or the hour.” We want to be awakened ⁃ Awake to the things of God ⁃ Awake to what He desires of us ⁃ Awake to our mission to lead others to a knowledge of the Savior and to usher in the Kingdom of God Additional parables covered ⁃ The Parable of the Talents - It is possible to know about the Master without truly knowing Him and living in relationship with Him. We are to use all He has given us to His glory so that others know and learn the Good News of our Savior. We are called to serve, love and honor God. ⁃ The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats - Pastor helps us understand this parable in a first century Jewish context. This story is incredibly profound and Pastor shares a personal testimony around the subject of sheep and goats and the question: “Do goats hear the shepherd's voice?” Pastor shares the differences between sheep and goats. In Jerusalem these two animals are in the same flock but they are very different. ⁃ Identity: 54 chromosomes vs. 60 chromosomes ⁃ Diet: tender grass vs. garbage ⁃ Intelligence: great ability to learn and understand and created to thrive under a shepherd vs. independent ⁃ Offspring: keep lambs near by vs. send their offspring out on their own ⁃ Social structures: no competition, need a shepherd to lead them vs. butt heads, desire to dominate ⁃ Shepherd: only thrive under a good shepherd vs. fiercely independent This parable shows us that it is possible to be a member of the flock but not be one of The Shepherd's sheep. Jesus is the Good Shepherd and it's important to follow Him. This parable goes on to talk about when “The King” comes and how He will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. Sheep on His right to eternal life and goats on the left to eternal punishment. This parable is about being a new creation in Christ, a follower, one of His sheep that hears His voice. Goats have not become new in Christ and want be in control. We are NOT saved by works - we are saved by the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for His sheep. As we continue, we move into Matthew 26 where Jesus tells His disciples, again, of His impending crucifixion. We see Judas going to the chief priests as he prepares to betray Jesus as told in both Matthew 26 and Luke 22. From there we see Jesus send two of His disciples (Peter and John) to begin preparations for the Passover meal which includes finding a place for their meal together and also going to the temple for the lamb for the meal. Pastor points out several examples of Jesus being in control of the details leading up to His arrest and that it is not the enemy who is control. Jesus is in charge! He is the Lord! And this is something we each need to realize - we are not in charge of our destinies, we do not make the rules, when we try - then we are like goats. But when we listen to Jesus, the Good Shepherd, we are His precious sheep and He desires to be both Lord and Savior in our lives. Even through Judas is “making plans” Jesus is still in control and He will not allow the enemy to divert Him from the Father's purpose. Pastor goes on to share unique details about the Passover lambs at the temple and our Passover Lamb, Jesus. Join us again next week as we continue Up to Jerusalem - the road that takes Jesus to the cross but that ends with His victory! Nesting by Roisin O'Donnell On a bright spring afternoon in Dublin, Ciara Fay makes a split-second decision that will change her life. Grabbing an armful of clothes from the washing line, Ciara straps her two young daughters into her car and drives away. Head spinning, all she knows for certain is that home is no longer safe. It was meant to be an escape. But with dwindling savings, no job, and her family across the sea, Ciara finds herself adrift, facing a broken housing system and the voice of her own demons. As summer passes and winter closes in, she must navigate raising her children in a hotel room, searching for a new home and dealing with her husband Ryan's relentless campaign to get her to come back. Because leaving is one thing, but staying away is another. One Hundred Years of Betty by Debra Oswald Meet Betty: storyteller, feminist, eternally curious and phenomenally old. On the eve of her hundredth birthday party, Betty tells us her story. Born into poverty in pre-war London, and growing up fast during the Blitz, Betty grabs the chance at a bigger life by migrating to Australia. On board the SS Asturias she meets three people who will influence the course of her life—Pearl, a good-hearted party girl; Athena, a Greek woman on her way to marry a man she has never met; and Leo, a German Jew who lost his family in the war. In Sydney, Betty is making ends meet as a waitress at the famous Trocadero dance hall when she stumbles into a rushed courtship with Donald, a wealthy businessman, and dedicates herself to being the ideal 1950s suburban housewife. But life has other plans for Betty, and soon she must find a way to do more than survive. Set against a century of world events and social upheavals, Betty takes us to the frontlines of the anti-war protests and the women's liberation movement of the 1970s, to the AIDS crisis during the 1980s, to Mexico and eventually becomes a TV screenwriter. Even in her nineties, Betty is still passionately engaged with the world, still surprising us. From the creator of Offspring and bestselling author of The Family Doctor, One Hundred Years of Betty is the saga of a strong, intelligent woman born too early in time to make the most of her talents without having to fight for everything. It's about the defining force of motherhood, the family we make, and how the determination to live to the hilt, with all the joy and sorrow that entails, can lead to a life beyond one's wildest imaginings. Video Edition.Welcome back and coming up on this edition of the show we welcome back "Canada's Rock'n'Roll Band" The Damn Truth" who release a brand new self titled albun this wek produced by grammy award winning producer Bob Rock. Joining us today to talk about the new album the band and all the stories behind the making of what will be one of the year's best albums are Lee-la Baum, PY Letellier and Dave Traina . Accept no substitute, The Damn Truth are probably the finest rock ‘n' roll band on the planet right now.” – Metal Planet“An incendiary kaboom of commotion, with blazing vocals, powder-keg rhythms, and flaming guitars. This is immense. It's a nitro-glycerine love-bomb!” – Raw RampThe forthcoming album features the singles “Love Outta Luck,” “I Just Gotta Let You Know,” “The Willow,” and their latest single “Better This Way.” Stream all the singles on Spotify. It's no secret that one of the most exciting new bands making noise in the UK and Europe these days is Canadian. It's true, and it's The Damn Truth, a Montreal rock foursome serving up a gutsy, revved up modern reimagining of classic rock ideals. And now, after touring the UK and Europe for the last four years, The Damn Truth return with their self-titled fourth album, The Damn Truth, and, once again, produced by the legendary Bob Rock (Motley Crue, The Offspring, Bon Jovi, etc). This new album is the culmination of 12 years of hard work and constant touring; The Damn Truth are a perpetual and virtually unstoppable rock and roll machine.Fuelled by two Top 40 singles on the Canadian Active Rock Charts (“Love Outta Luck,” “I Just Gotta Let You Know”), this new album marks the next level in their relationship with Bob Rock. He has pushed the band in all areas of playing, writing, and refining the Damn Truth signature sound, most evident in the revelatory power of Lee-la Baum's vocals as evidenced on the mystic, almost Zeppelin-vibed “The Willow;” the full on bittersweet romance of “Better This Way;” the social conscience of “The Dying Dove;” the cautionary “If Don't Make It Home;” and the hell yeah rabble rousing “All Night Long.” The Damn Truth have added some extra lanes on their rock'n'roll highway as they explore new musical scenery, but the destination remains the same: organic loud rock experienced best in a crowded concert hall dripping in sweat. The album was recorded over a period of two months at Bryan Adams' Warehouse Studios in Vancouver. This is Bob Rock's favourite studio; it's a classic and gigantic old school recording haven (AC/DC had just wrapped up prior to The Damn Truth's arrival), perfect for the massive drum sound that Bob loves. Unlike their previous LP, Now or Nowhere (2021), which was hampered by Covid restrictions; this one is 100% produced and mixed by Bob Rock, who also gave the band access to his incredible collection of rare and vintage guitars for the sessions.

A captive breeding program has helped set California Condors on the path to recovery. But when biologists reviewed the family tree for the breeding program, they found a big surprise. Two chicks had DNA that linked them perfectly to their mothers but didn't match a single male. They arose through parthenogenesis, developing from unfertilized eggs without sperm from a male. These condors are the first known case of parthenogenesis in a wild bird species where the females had access to fertile males.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? In this episode, John and Dave look back at the Sega Dreamcast, sharing memories of the console that was ahead of its time but gone too soon. The Dreamcast had zero copy protection - John and Dave traded burned game CDs "like baseball cards" Their gaming favorites included Crazy Taxi (with its Offspring soundtrack), Jet Grind Radio with its anime style, and Shenmue's groundbreaking open world John demonstrates his new "Singe" emulator that runs Laserdisc-style games and lets people create interactive adventures from movie clips They reminisce about playing games on massive CRT TVs that "weighed a billion pounds" John shares his Batocera emulation setup that includes arcade games and serves as a central ROM library They discuss how modern gaming is moving toward platform-agnostic services, similar to what Sega did after the Dreamcast
Real Life Updates Devon's Redecoration Adventure Devon has been painting and redecorating—at Jen's request—to make things look more "adult." This involved taking down metal posters to put up a TV for gaming, which led to a frustrating experience with Displate (spoiler: they suck). While redecorating, Devon also came across a fascinating philosophy YouTuber, Alex O'Connor. ▶️ Watch Alex O'Connor: YouTube Link Also, ChatGPT can apparently generate a perfect glass of wine… all the way to the top. Steven's Gaming Corner Steven has been playing Avowed (part of Xbox Game Pass—so "free"). His verdict? "Pretty fun." Thanks to his beefy new graphics card, he's playing on PC. ▶️ Check out Avowed: Steam Link He also tried Keep Driving, a game about driving to the right, avoiding potholes, picking up hitchhikers, and helping a little girl find her parents—all while managing fuel, energy, and car repairs. ▶️ Try Keep Driving: Steam Link Ben's Solitaire Obsession Ben has discovered Scoundrel Solitaire by Zach Gage and Kurt Bieg, a solitaire game played with a real deck of cards and a D20. ▶️ Learn how to play: Rules PDF ▶️ Play online: Itch.io Link Future or Now: Music & Media Renee's Music Question: Renee's kid is getting into 90s rock (Weezer, The Offspring, etc.), and that sparked a conversation about favorite musical sounds and guitar solos. Here's what we came up with: Ben: The sound of an orchestra tuning up (potential energy). Favorite solo: We Will Fall Together – Streetlight Manifesto Steven: Any heavy bass sound. Favorite solo: Waking the Demon Devon: Pinched harmonics. Favorite solo: Octavarium (Razor's Edge) – John Petrucci ▶️ Dream Theater - Octavarium Guitar Solo: YouTube Link Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man We checked out Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which fills in gaps between the Tom Holland movies. Like X-Men '97, it takes some big swings. ▶️ More on the show: IMDB Link Devon's Disturbing Read Devon is reading Animal Liberation Now by Peter Singer. It's unsettling, to say the least. More thoughts after he finishes. ▶️ Read it here: Google Books Link Steven's Movie Night Steven watched some of Wicked Part 1 with his kids. They haven't asked to watch more. Suspicious. He also revisited Return to Oz, which remains a fever dream. ▶️ Return to Oz: Rotten Tomatoes Link Book Club Corner Next Week: To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers A look at 22nd-century space exploration using somaforming—biological modifications that allow astronauts to survive hostile environments. Offspring of the .308, like so many great cartridges, the .358 Win offers big bullet performance in a compact package. What's not to like? Nothing if shooting distance is moderate — particularly on critters where a large hole and increased structural damage fall firmly in the plus category. So why does this cartridge gasp for air like a trout tossed to the bank? Tune in for our take on the good but nearly forgotten .358 Win.As always, we want to hear your feedback! “One fella is just hollowed out!” - Chris on xeno aftermath gore On this week's episode, we're taking the show back to Franchise Town as we chat about the solid-ish sci-fi sequel/prequel/in-between-quel, Alien: Romulus! How incredible are all the ship and planetary designs in this film? Should they have kept the entire story on the mining colony and had the xenos just chasing them down there? How great is David Jonsson in this film, portraying both Andy and Upgraded Andy? Is Bjorn the most annoying character in the entire franchise? And yeah, this Ian Holm decision is truly repugnant! PLUS: Lotta Alien: Resurrection in here, folks! Alien: Romulus stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, Aileen Wu, and Robert Bobroczkyi as Offspring; directed by Fede Álvarez. Wonder and strangeness commingle with the commonplace and universal in Danielle Chapman's “Trespassing with Tweens.” In a not-quite mirroring, a human mother and her children stand and watch together in awe as a great blue heron flaps in and feeds its two offspring. The pleasures found here are profound and multiple – the joys in seeing, in sharing an experience of seeing, in seeing with fresh eyes, and in being seen.Danielle Chapman is a poet, essayist, and lecturer in English at Yale University. Her most recent collection of poetry, Boxed Juice, was published in 2024 by Unbounded Edition Press. Her previous collection of poems, Delinquent Palaces, was published by Northwestern University Press in 2015, and her memoir, Holler: A Poet Among Patriots, was released by Unbound Edition Press in 2023. For several years, Chapman served as the Director of Literary Arts and Events for the City of Chicago, and she was also an editor at Poetry Magazine. She currently teaches Shakespeare and creative writing and lives in Hamden, Connecticut, with her family.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.We're pleased to offer Danielle Chapman's poem and invite you to subscribe to Pádraig's weekly Poetry Unbound Substack newsletter, read the Poetry Unbound book, or listen to past episodes of the podcast. We also have two books coming out in early 2025 — Kitchen Hymns (new poems from Pádraig) and 44 Poems on Being with Each Other (new essays by Pádraig). You can pre-order them wherever you buy books.
