Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Korea's brief but significant period as an empire as it moved from the 500-year-old dynastic Joseon monarchy towards modernity. It was in October 1897 that King Gojong declared himself Emperor, seizing his chance when the once-dominant China lost to Japan in the First Sino-Japanese War. The king wanted to have the same status as the neighbouring Russian, Chinese and Japanese Emperors, to shore up a bid for Korean independence and sovereignty when the world's major powers either wanted to open Korea up to trade or to colonise it. The Korean Empire lasted only thirteen years, yet it was a time of great transformation for this state and the whole region with lasting consequences in the next century…With Nuri Kim Associate Professor in Korean Studies at the faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Wolfson CollegeHolly Stephens Lecturer in Japanese and Korean Studies at the University of EdinburghAnd Derek Kramer Lecturer in Korean Studies at the University of SheffieldProducer: Simon TillotsonReading list:Isabella Bird Bishop, Korea and her Neighbors: A Narrative of Travel, With an Account of the Recent Vicissitudes and Present Position of the Country (first published 1898; Forgotten Books, 2019)Vipan Chandra, Imperialism, Resistance and Reform in Late Nineteenth-Century Korea: Enlightenment and the Independence Club (University of California, Institute of East Asian Studies, 1988)Peter Duus, The Abacus and the Sword: The Japanese Penetration of Korea, 1859-1910 (University of California Press, 1995)Carter J. Ginny Yurich (@1000hoursoutside) drove 5 hours up the road from Michigan to Toronto to hang out with Leslie and me. We went for a walk outside (of course!) and recorded this podcast—our second outdoors podcast in a row after Nickisha The Dog Walker! Why outside? I'm glad you asked! Ginny Yurich is the homeschooling mother of 5 (!) who has spirited a movement called 1000 Hours Outside. I like 1000 as you know! 1000 Awesome Things was my first blog, 1000 formative books is ... this entire podcast. So when 3 Bookers globally kept telling me to interview Ginny I looked her up and saw she was a fan of 1000 and I knew ... this was going to be good. And it was even better than I thought! Grab some headphones! Put on some shoes! Let's mutually peel ourselves off screens and scrolling and let's step into the sun, into the wind, into the air and talk about parenting pressures, raising a wild child, old dangerous playground equipment, the benefits of spinning, why osteoporosis is a childhood disease, raising readers, and, of course, Ginny's 3 most formative books. Ginny is the bestselling author of '1000 Hours Outside,' 'Until The Streetlights Come On,' and (out next week!) her brand-new book 'Homeschooling' which has the catchy subtitle "You're doing it right just by doing it." I found her formative books truly fascinating and her work is heavily research-based which builds upon her Master's in Education and an almost endless reservoir of knowledge about raising enduringly popular and healthy children in today's cognitively-exhausting world.... I absolutely love Ginny Yurich! Open the door, hear the birds, and let's flip the page into Chapter 148 now...

Expedia Group is experiencing weaker travel demand to the U.S., reporting a 7% decline in inbound travel and lowering its full-year growth expectations due to softening bookings and revenue. Choice Hotels also cut its revenue outlook, though it saw a 7% rise in revenue per available room from its budget brands, benefiting from factors like strong employment and low gas prices. Meanwhile, Sphere Entertainment plans to expand by developing smaller, more cost-effective versions of its large-scale Sphere venues, aiming for broader market deployment with better investment returns. Today, we're joined by 5 x logie winner and one of Australia's most beloved actresses, Asher Keddie. Asher is usually more reserved when it comes to her private life but it was really refreshing to hear her say that she is feeling more and more comfortable actually speaking about herself and what her motivations and ambitions are, rather than just about the characters she plays. Asher has a reputation of playing complex and layered, strong female characters in shows like ‘Offspring’, ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ and she’s now back as Evelyn Jones in Season 2 of ‘Strife’, a series inspired by Mia Freedman's memoir Work, Strife, Balance. The show delves into the life of a modern woman juggling the demands of career, motherhood, and personal identity in the digital age. We’ve had quite a lot of conversations on the podcast about the expectations of us to ‘do it all’ and make it look easy and we wanted to speak with Asher today about motherhood and the complexities of juggling her career alongside family life. We spoke about: The ‘actual’ story of how Asher got into acting (and it’s not the narrative that’s circulated) Why Asher chose to stay acting in Australia rather than going to Hollywood or NY The ‘care less’ factor you gain as you get a bit older and feel more confident What drew Asher to Strife Dealing with rejection Whether the ‘expiration date’ of women is shifting Mum guilt and making work decisions with family in mind The evolution in her relationship in the last 14 years Season two of STRIFE is out now on Binge and it’s brilliant! “There was always a way that music could speak to me,” says Youth Lagoon's Trevor Powers. “I was really shy as a kid and I had a lot on my mind that I didn't know how to get out. And music felt like one of those cheat codes where I felt like what I could say through one song was a lifetime worth of what was in my brain that I couldn't say any other way.” I was instantly captivated by Youth Lagoon's music when I first heard it more than a decade ago: Trevor Powers' plaintive, childlike voice, the dreaminess and heady sonic textures of his music, the candor in his storytelling. In the years since the Boise, Idaho artist's 2011 debut album, he has continually deepened his ability to make music that soothes and haunts at the same time. His latest album, Rarely Do I Dream, is his best yet, and one of my favorite LPs of 2025 so far. In the conversation in episode 121, Trevor talks about how discovering a trove of old home movies helped inspire the new album, and remind him of the importance of finding the true feeling at the center of a memory. He also discusses growing up hearing artists like Elvis and The Beach Boys and John Denver while being homeschooled, before finally being exposed to bands like Korn and the Offspring and Blink-182 when he eventually attended high school, and later discovering artists like My Bloody Valentine and Oingo Boingo thanks to his uncle introducing him to more cutting edge music. “There's always something that's coming in that's changing not only my thought process, but there's something internally that's awakening my spirit in these new ways and pushing me in all these different directions,” he says. “There could be an endless amount of lifetimes and I can't get it all out, what's up here.”Trevor also shares why he decided to "kill off" the Youth Lagoon Project several years ago, and to instead record under his own name for awhile, and why he chose to resurrect the moniker back in 2022. Youth Lagoon is on tour in the U.S. until mid-May. Get more info here.

1. Abraham's offspring are free for those who believe. Being a son of Abraham does not make you free.2. Abraham's offspring hear the truth, truth is found in Jesus. Those who are only the "children" of Abraham do their fathers work.3. Abraham's offspring rejoice in the Day of Christ.
When the offspring is so hideous and so dreadful! John Angell James, "Sorrow for the Death of Friends"How dreadful is the nature of sin! Sin is the parent of death. Death is the first-born of sin. What must be the parent--when the offspring is so hideous and so dreadful! Who can have watched the harbingers of death--the groans, the pains, the dying strife--without being struck with the fearful nature of man's revolt from God?Death in itself, and by itself--is horrid and revolting! To see all this inflicted upon a Christian, a child of God, an heir of glory; to see no way even to the kingdom of God, to the realms of immortality, but this dark valley of corruption, earth, and worms--this gives us a most impressive idea of the dreadful nature of sin! How such scenes should enlarge our views of the malignity of sin, and embitter our hearts against it!O sin--sin! What have you done!

We're back. Episode 52 marks the reunion of Cecil, Gordo, Huff, and Mauro, and we're diving face-first into the pit with 20 punk songs that shaped us, scarred us, or at least pissed someone off. Each of us brought five tracks—from classics like the Dead Kennedys and Misfits, to deep cuts from Swingin' Utters, face to face, and even a Butthole Surfers pick Mauro has to defend (and yes, he will). There's yelling. There's swearing. There's nostalgia. And there's the kind of playlist that makes you want to dig out your old plaid pants and jump in a mosh pit. Up To Jerusalem - Teaching 9 Scripture - Matthew 25-26, Luke 22 We continue with Jesus' Mt. Olivet Discourse where He is talking about the future end of Jerusalem that did happen in 70AD several decades after His ascension and as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophets. Jesus is also talking of the preparation for His second coming and the importance of being awake. Pastor reviews the conclusion of the Parable of the Ten Virgins with Jesus' words,”Therefore keep watch because you do not know the day or the hour.” We want to be awakened ⁃ Awake to the things of God ⁃ Awake to what He desires of us ⁃ Awake to our mission to lead others to a knowledge of the Savior and to usher in the Kingdom of God Additional parables covered ⁃ The Parable of the Talents - It is possible to know about the Master without truly knowing Him and living in relationship with Him. We are to use all He has given us to His glory so that others know and learn the Good News of our Savior. We are called to serve, love and honor God. ⁃ The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats - Pastor helps us understand this parable in a first century Jewish context. This story is incredibly profound and Pastor shares a personal testimony around the subject of sheep and goats and the question: “Do goats hear the shepherd's voice?” Pastor shares the differences between sheep and goats. In Jerusalem these two animals are in the same flock but they are very different. ⁃ Identity: 54 chromosomes vs. 60 chromosomes ⁃ Diet: tender grass vs. garbage ⁃ Intelligence: great ability to learn and understand and created to thrive under a shepherd vs. independent ⁃ Offspring: keep lambs near by vs. send their offspring out on their own ⁃ Social structures: no competition, need a shepherd to lead them vs. butt heads, desire to dominate ⁃ Shepherd: only thrive under a good shepherd vs. fiercely independent This parable shows us that it is possible to be a member of the flock but not be one of The Shepherd's sheep. Jesus is the Good Shepherd and it's important to follow Him. This parable goes on to talk about when “The King” comes and how He will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. Sheep on His right to eternal life and goats on the left to eternal punishment. This parable is about being a new creation in Christ, a follower, one of His sheep that hears His voice. Goats have not become new in Christ and want be in control. We are NOT saved by works - we are saved by the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for His sheep. As we continue, we move into Matthew 26 where Jesus tells His disciples, again, of His impending crucifixion. We see Judas going to the chief priests as he prepares to betray Jesus as told in both Matthew 26 and Luke 22. From there we see Jesus send two of His disciples (Peter and John) to begin preparations for the Passover meal which includes finding a place for their meal together and also going to the temple for the lamb for the meal. Pastor points out several examples of Jesus being in control of the details leading up to His arrest and that it is not the enemy who is control. Jesus is in charge! He is the Lord! And this is something we each need to realize - we are not in charge of our destinies, we do not make the rules, when we try - then we are like goats. But when we listen to Jesus, the Good Shepherd, we are His precious sheep and He desires to be both Lord and Savior in our lives. Even through Judas is “making plans” Jesus is still in control and He will not allow the enemy to divert Him from the Father's purpose. Pastor goes on to share unique details about the Passover lambs at the temple and our Passover Lamb, Jesus. Join us again next week as we continue Up to Jerusalem - the road that takes Jesus to the cross but that ends with His victory! Our website – https://www.awakeusnow.com Watch the video from our website! https://www.awakeusnow.com/2-year-study-of-the-gospels-upper Watch the video from our YouTube Channel!! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTaaqrC3dMOzMkhPyiNWwlJRpV6Bwpu01 Up to Jerusalem is a study of the final weeks of Jesus' ministry concluding with His resurrection and ascension, using the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John together with material from ancient sources and recent discoveries. Up to Jerusalem is part four of our Two Year Study of the Gospels. Up To Jerusalem is the story of the plan of God to redeem the world, and the story of a Savior willing to obey the Father's plan. As we study Jesus' final days, we will be impacted as we discover the Love of God for each one of us. This study is great for large group, small group or home group study and can be started at any time.

‘Adolescence' is the new Netflix drama series the world is talking about. Em is terrified to watch it, but Michael wasn't, so he offers up his review on if Em would be able to cope with it. Then Em reviews the last two episodes of ‘The White Lotus' from that revealing confession scene in Bangkok, and that problematic threesome between the two brothers as well. Then we move onto another week of your Spicy Sunday Hot Takes starting with Emily's low key hot take that the killing off of the character Patrick in ‘Offspring' was the best decision Michael ever made *shock horror*. There's also the hot takes that spoiler alerts can get in the bin and an Aperol Spritz take that inspires a revealing confession from Em. Then in our Sealed Section, on our premium service Emsolation Extra, Em gives us the full, detailed review of her night seeing ‘Jesus Christ Superstar' plus the chaos of adding a journalist to your private US Government chatroom. You can sign up and listen for $1.87 a week, or watch it for $2.50 a week at emsolation.supercast.com and don't forget you can watch highlights from this episode in full maximalist colour on our YouTube channel at youtube.com/@emsolationpodcast Learn more about your ad choices. Video Edition.Welcome back and coming up on this edition of the show we welcome back "Canada's Rock'n'Roll Band" The Damn Truth" who release a brand new self titled albun this wek produced by grammy award winning producer Bob Rock. Joining us today to talk about the new album the band and all the stories behind the making of what will be one of the year's best albums are Lee-la Baum, PY Letellier and Dave Traina . Accept no substitute, The Damn Truth are probably the finest rock ‘n' roll band on the planet right now.” – Metal Planet“An incendiary kaboom of commotion, with blazing vocals, powder-keg rhythms, and flaming guitars. This is immense. It's a nitro-glycerine love-bomb!” – Raw RampThe forthcoming album features the singles “Love Outta Luck,” “I Just Gotta Let You Know,” “The Willow,” and their latest single “Better This Way.” Stream all the singles on Spotify. It's no secret that one of the most exciting new bands making noise in the UK and Europe these days is Canadian. It's true, and it's The Damn Truth, a Montreal rock foursome serving up a gutsy, revved up modern reimagining of classic rock ideals. And now, after touring the UK and Europe for the last four years, The Damn Truth return with their self-titled fourth album, The Damn Truth, and, once again, produced by the legendary Bob Rock (Motley Crue, The Offspring, Bon Jovi, etc). This new album is the culmination of 12 years of hard work and constant touring; The Damn Truth are a perpetual and virtually unstoppable rock and roll machine.Fuelled by two Top 40 singles on the Canadian Active Rock Charts (“Love Outta Luck,” “I Just Gotta Let You Know”), this new album marks the next level in their relationship with Bob Rock. He has pushed the band in all areas of playing, writing, and refining the Damn Truth signature sound, most evident in the revelatory power of Lee-la Baum's vocals as evidenced on the mystic, almost Zeppelin-vibed “The Willow;” the full on bittersweet romance of “Better This Way;” the social conscience of “The Dying Dove;” the cautionary “If Don't Make It Home;” and the hell yeah rabble rousing “All Night Long.” The Damn Truth have added some extra lanes on their rock'n'roll highway as they explore new musical scenery, but the destination remains the same: organic loud rock experienced best in a crowded concert hall dripping in sweat. The album was recorded over a period of two months at Bryan Adams' Warehouse Studios in Vancouver. This is Bob Rock's favourite studio; it's a classic and gigantic old school recording haven (AC/DC had just wrapped up prior to The Damn Truth's arrival), perfect for the massive drum sound that Bob loves. Unlike their previous LP, Now or Nowhere (2021), which was hampered by Covid restrictions; this one is 100% produced and mixed by Bob Rock, who also gave the band access to his incredible collection of rare and vintage guitars for the sessions.
A captive breeding program has helped set California Condors on the path to recovery. But when biologists reviewed the family tree for the breeding program, they found a big surprise. Two chicks had DNA that linked them perfectly to their mothers but didn't match a single male. They arose through parthenogenesis, developing from unfertilized eggs without sperm from a male. These condors are the first known case of parthenogenesis in a wild bird species where the females had access to fertile males.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Who's the leading HR hitter this spring? Aaron Judge? Good guess. But no. You'll want to hear the story of Vinny Capra. Also, get this: In a World Baseball Classic qualifier, Manny Ramirez's son batted vs. Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf's son. Really. Offspring of the .308, like so many great cartridges, the .358 Win offers big bullet performance in a compact package. What's not to like? Nothing if shooting distance is moderate — particularly on critters where a large hole and increased structural damage fall firmly in the plus category. So why does this cartridge gasp for air like a trout tossed to the bank? Tune in for our take on the good but nearly forgotten .358 Win.As always, we want to hear your feedback!
