Heldigvis! Ta vel imot dagens gjest, som er ingen ringere enn the one and only, Geir Sundstøl.
In which the Curmudgeons meditate on the year in which grunge as a movement officially entered the universal rock consciousness. The Seattle rock scene in the mid-to-late 1980s was defined by a bunch of smart, ambitious wiseasses who were in a virtual competition with one another to find the truest sweet spot between punk and metal. However, it was not until the band Mudhoney found an enthusiastic and adoring fanbase in the United Kingdom in 1988 and 1989 that the rest of the world started to take notice. An inquisitive and diligent writer named Everett True, with help of storied Seattle record company Sub Pop, traveled to Seattle and cranked out an authoritative, lovingly crafted primer on grunge for the magazine Melody Maker that triggered a wave of buzz and set in motion the commercial forces that made grunge a cultural phenomenon two-plus years later. And True's timing was impeccable: Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, Screaming Trees, Tad and this one "little brother" band named Nirvana all released exciting music in 1989. We cover that grungy waterfront during this episode. - Nye bands med nye tilgange til (hård) rockmusik: The Smashing Pumpkins, Mudhoney og Temple of the Dog. In this episode of Start Here, Alexis Ffrench dives into the raw, emotional world of Grunge with journalist and broadcaster Kate Hutchinson.Together, they explore the origins of grunge in late 1980s Seattle, unpacking how a small scene of misfit musicians created a sound that would go on to redefine rock music. From distorted guitars and stripped-back instrumentation to themes of alienation, vulnerability and rebellion, this episode gets to the heart of what made grunge so powerful. They also examine the cultural impact of the movement, its sudden rise into the mainstream, and the tensions that came with it, as well as the role of women in shaping the genre and its legacy today.Featuring key artists including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Hole and Mudhoney, this is a compelling introduction to one of music's most raw and influential genres.Whether you know grunge well or are discovering it for the first time, this is your starting point. In which The Curmudgeons set the dial back to 1988, when grunge started to become a real thing with real buzz and found itself no longer contained to just Seattle. Mudhoney kicked ass and triumphed in the U.K. with the gargantuan single "Touch Me I'm Sick" and their awesomely heavy debut EP Superfuzz Bigmuff. Soundgarden released its full-length debut album, which, while badly produced, found the band slashing and burning through a number of supremely intense rockers. And Screaming Trees served up a super-loud but super-cool take on 1960s psychedelic garage rock. Meanwhile, non-Seattle bands like Sonic Youth, Pixies and Dinosaur Jr. released classic hard rock albums that would influence a certain talented little guy from Aberdeen, Wa., a few years later. Episode 134 of the Stupid and Contagious Podcast… and this week we've got a big one.Today we're talking about The God Machine, one of the most intense, mysterious and tragically short-lived bands of the 90s alternative scene. A band that started out in San Diego, ended up squatting in London, busking on the streets of Amsterdam just to survive, and somehow turned all of that chaos into some of the most powerful music of the decade. In this episode we're joined by Austin Lane, drummer of The God Machine, who tells the incredible story of the band from their chaotic beginnings, to life on the road, the creation of those records, and what really happened at the end. It's one of the wildest origin stories we've had on this podcast. So let's get into it.Here's Austin from The God Machine.Stupid & Contagious STORE https://stupid-contagious-podcast.myshopify.comWelcome to The Stupid And Contagious podcast, a podcast focused on bringing you interviews with the bands that defined a generation! That generation grew up in the 90s with the Grebo bands (Senseless Things, PWEI, Neds Atomic Dustbin, Mega City Four, The Wonderstuff and many more) on the UK side of the pond and quickly joined by the grunge bands (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and many more) on the US side of the pond.We are not limiting ourselves to these genres though, we will chart the guitar bands from all genres throughout the decade that was the 1990s.If you are into 1990s guitar music or just a music lover in general then this is the podcast for you! Please also subscribe and follow the podcast on the social media links belowStupid & Contagious PodcastItunes https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/stupid-contagious/id1705645715All the Socials! https://linktr.ee/stupidandcontagiousFacebook https://www.facebook.com/stupidandcontagiouspodcastYoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfPJ5FhcYAHO7UhrRtTtgGwInstagram https://www.instagram.com/stupidandcontagiouspodcast/MIXTAPE https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1WEwKz9w7ZOnGW9ghhOxH2 Hosted on Acast. It's 'Wang' 26 and this week on the podcast, we're diving headfirst into one of the most divisive eras in rock history… Nu Metal!Adidas tracksuits. Chain wallets. DJ scratches. Angsty screams. Woodstock '99 literally going up in flames. Was it a genuine evolution of heavy music or a frat-boy fueled regression that undid everything the ‘90s stood for? From Korn and Limp Bizkit to Linkin Park and Slipknot, we're breaking down the good, the bad, and the genuinely ugly side of nu metal. The riffs, the rap-rock experiments, the emotional vulnerability and the misogyny, chaos, and terrible cover versions!Did nu metal bring heavy music to the mainstream? Did it help a generation of angry teenagers feel seen or did it accidentally soundtrack the collapse of culture? Stāsta komponists un kontrabasists Kristaps Pētersons; pārraides producente – Rūta Paula Svētdien, 2001. gada 7. janvārī ap 18:30 (vai varbūt 19:00 – nav tik būtiski) līdz 11. septembrim bija tālu. "Mudhoney" [1] intensīvi gatavojās savam 12. janvāra koncertam "Great American Music Hall" Sanfrancisko, Deivs Grols [2] – savai dzimšanas dienas ballītei 14. janvārī, bet flautiste Ilona Meija izpildīja Johana Sebastiāna Baha [3] Badinēriju no orķestra svītas Nr. 2 siminorā, BWV 1067. 00:01 ekonomikas komentētājs un mediju producents Kristaps Pētersons portālā delfi.lv publicēja šādus vārdus: "Tikai izglītība – nekas cits – izvedīs mūs no miglas!" [7]. Es tas neesmu, kas to saka, bet man viņam nākas piekrist. Mazu migliņu tolaik radījām. Mēs smēķējām "Bond", "L&M", "Marlboro", "Camel" – ko nu kurš (un neklausījāmies, kā 2001. gada 7. janvārī ap 18:30 Ilona Meija spēlē Baha Badinēriju – mēs būtu nākuši varbūt, ja to spēlētu kāda ārzemju zvaigzne, bet tad ieeja koncertos būtu jāliek par maksu, nevis par brīvu, kā tas jau no pašiem pirmsākumiem 1991. gadā bija visos Senās mūzikas festivālos Valmierā; un tad tas būtu cits festivāls – tāds, kur spēlē ārzemju zvaigzne, kuras fonā mēs brauktu nopelnīt savu honorāru – tas nebūtu nekas slikts – taču šeit mēs braucām savā brīvajā laikā, spēlējām par brīvu un no sirds [8]). Ilonas Meijas interpretācija [9] noteikti bija tērauda stiprumā, tomēr kaut kas pasaulē bija salūzis, un mēs to nedzirdējām. 2001. gada 7. janvārī pēkšņi līdz 11. septembrim nemaz vairs nebija tālu. Mēs visi esam saistīti, dažkārt tādos veidos, kurus ar prātu grūti aptvert. Šķiet, Bahs savā mūzikā atklāj to stiprāk nekā citi, jo aptverošāk. – mirusi Valmierā 2017. g.), katru gadu festivālam gatavojot vairākas koncertprogrammas gan solo, gan kameransambļiem – savā brīvajā laikā, bez maksas un no sirds. In which The Curmudgeons revisit the goofy yet ambitious and thrillingly original dawn of grunge music. Unbeknownst to some, the story of what became the dominant mainstream brand of rock 'n' roll in the 1990s dates back to 1984, back when the Seattle area was cold, rainy, gloomy and also a sleepy outpost that was surprisingly actually skipped by major artists of the time. So what you do you when no one's really watching and there isn't a whole lot to do? You mess around wiht your friends and bond over a love for 1970s classic rock, punk, metal, prog rock and other various forms of guitar-driven rock. And you started bands and shared ideas and worked to one up another in finding a way to meld all you loves into one sonic package. And that's exactly what the innovators of grunge did: found a sweet spot in between the fury of punk on the one hand and the grandeur and theatricality of metal on the other. Here. we discuss the first wave of bands that figuratively--and literally-put grunge on the map. We cover Green River, the Melvins, Soundgarden and more... Listen to all of this awesome proto grunge from the 1980s by accessing our special Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3IcoNHpnt15muKt4cg8CLy?si=6c1adf065eb44519 Here's a handy navigation companion to this episode: (00:52 - 04:23) - Arturo Andrade sets the parameters for our discussion of early grunge (06:13 - 23:56) - The Parallel Universe, featuring discussions of music of recent vintage from The Men and Cameron Winter (24:55 - 58:07) - We discuss the origin in story of grunge by providing context about the Pacific Northwest scene in the 1980s. We also analyze great albums from Green River, the Melvins and Sound Garden (59:02 - 01:18:41) - We analyze a number of great "grunge-adjacent" albums from Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and The Pixies. And we cover the last great volley from Green River before its members went on to found Mudhoney and Pearl Jam in later years. It's episode 130 and this week we're joined by Steven McDonald aka Hollywood Steve, Redd Kross founder, bassist, songwriter, and survivor of just about every phase of alternative music you can name! From starting a band at 12 years old, playing with Black Flag, and accidentally standing at the ground zero of grunge, to navigating Britpop envy, major-label fallout, and the strange feeling of being too early for your own moment, this is a proper rock-and-roll life story.Steven talks candidly about Redd Kross's long road, why Nirvana thought they were “too happy,” touring with the Lemonheads, getting lost in the 80s, rediscovering joy in the 90s and what it actually takes to keep a band alive for 45 years without losing your mind! It's funny, brutally honest, occasionally uncomfortable, and full of the kind of music-nerd detail we absolutely live for. This is Steven McDonald, unfiltered, unromanticised, and still standing!Stupid & Contagious STORE https://stupid-contagious-podcast.myshopify.comWelcome to The Stupid And Contagious podcast, a podcast focused on bringing you interviews with the bands that defined a generation! Please also subscribe and follow the podcast on the social media links belowStupid & Contagious PodcastItunes https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/stupid-contagious/id1705645715All the Socials! https://linktr.ee/stupidandcontagiousFacebook https://www.facebook.com/stupidandcontagiouspodcastYoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfPJ5FhcYAHO7UhrRtTtgGwInstagram https://www.instagram.com/stupidandcontagiouspodcast/Spotify MIXTAPE: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/56QCMSf17CDzHdeI3Vqtes Hosted on Acast. Russ Meyer loved women. Women with big boobs, big curves, and big personalities. This week, we lace up our Doc Martins and hike over to the Pacific Northwest to the home of GRUNGE! We discuss bands outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts fondly remember this time, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all US rock n' roll avenues. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. Don't think you like grunge? Then check this out! This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don't think you'll be totally surprised. Many of these groups had similarities with the producers that were chosen, namely, Jack Endino. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Captain Content and Kevin's wheelhouse. As usual, we have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks, and don't forget your flannel!Songs this week include:Green River – “Swallow My Pride” from Dry As A Bone / Rehab Doll (1987)The Nymphs – “Death Of A Scenester” from Nymphs (1991)Dig – “I'll Stay High” from Dig (1993)Mammoth Volume – “Matador” from Noara Dance (2000)Tripping Daisy – “Rocketpop” from I Am An Elastic Firecracker (1995)Coffin Break – “So Long To Reality” from Thirteen (1992)Smash Atoms – “Into The Light” from Smash Atoms (2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store
Howdy Folks, DJ Matador here, I Watched the latest Captain America movie what a piece of crap. That inspired the show, this is all anti Hollywood tracks. CGI is out of control, Theaters are over priced and they only make sequels. Gower talks movies and home repair and Matador talks the end of Secret trail brewing (RIP). This one rips and the opening track inspired the episode Buy the Gary Holt book. Movies suck now, MATADOR Artist include: Public Enemy, Exodus, Mudhoney, Misfits, Runaways and many more.
The 1980s saw an explosion of independent record labels across the US, shaping the sound and spirit of underground music to this day. This week, Daniel House from Skin Yard and C/Z Records joins us as we dive into some of the finest labels whose DIY ethos, fearless experimentation, and raw energy broke away from the corporate music machine. One of the crucial American indie labels of the era was C/Z Records, the Seattle imprint that will forever be remembered as the second most important label in the burgeoning grunge scene. That being said, it was C/Z, not Sub Pop, who released the defining document of the new sound of the Pacific Northwest with 1986's Deep Six compilation - introducing Soundgarden, The Melvins, U-Men, Green River, Malfunkshun, and Skin Yard. Founded in 1985 by Chris Hanzek and Tina Casale, Skin Yard bassist Daniel House took over operation of C/Z in 1987, subsequently releasing music by Nirvana, Henry Rollins, Built To Spill, The Gits, Hammerbox, Presidents of the United States of America, 7 Year B---h, Coffin Break and many more. Skin Yard was a foundational band in the development of the grunge movement, not only due to the groundbreaking music they recorded between 1985 - 1991, but also the band members' other contributions to Seattle music. Aside from the aforementioned impact that House made with C/Z Records, guitarist Jack Endino would go on to produce and engineer some of the most enduring records of the era - including Nirvana's Bleach, and music by Mudhoney, Tad, Soundgarden, L7, and Screaming Trees. Lead singer Ben McMillan would form the band Gruntruck, and sadly passed away in 2008 at the age of 46. Drummer Matt Cameron is a world class musician who has been behind the kit for Soundgarden and, for the past 25 years, with Pearl Jam. Skin Yard Select is the brand new, limited collection of 14 songs loving curated by Daniel House and Jack Endino, culling tracks from their four studio albums, but also featuring enough rarities to please long-time fans. This beautiful package consists of seven individual 7" singles, each in their own sleeve and pressed on limited edition colored vinyl (or good ol' fashioned black). Brisbane, Australia's The Saints are responsible for two of the greatest punk albums of all time, in 1977's '(I'm) Stranded' and 1978's 'Eternally Yours.' This November, look for “The Saints '73-‘78” to be touring North America, featuring original members Ed Kuepper and Ivor Hay, along with The Birthday Party's Mick Harvey, the Sunnyboys' Peter Oxley and Mudhoney's Mark Arm, in service of original lead singer Chris Bailey, lost to us in 2022. Additionally, there's a four-LP boxset version of the milestone debut album out, as well as a new solo album from Ed, done in conjunction with Jim White from the Dirty Three, called 'After the Flood.' Check out Goldmine author Martin Popoff interview The Saints guitarist/ vocalist/songwriter Ed Kuepper in a wide-ranging chat that looks at how The Saints dovetailed into the punk movement, along with a fair bit on each of the three albums covered by the upcoming tour, plus a look at the new solo album. We also touch upon the creative differences that led to Ed's split with Chris after the band's controversial third album, 'Prehistoric Sounds,' issued in October of 1978. Horns? Acoustic guitars? Surely The Saints didn't invent punk?! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Yes, this is our last foray into the 'Dark Side of the 90s' Vice series. In keeping with the total and complete theme of FG itself, we just had to talk more about the birth of the Seattle sound and Sub-Pop records. This episode focuses more on the independent label scene and just how corporations really tried to ruin everything. At least there is a silver lining in the fact that Sub-Pop is still kicking as a label and has become a cultural touchstone to the city of Seattle. This episode talks to Bruce Pavitt (Sub-Pop co-founder), Charles Peterson (photographer), and others to get a more complete picture. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament are two of the Seattle scene's most foundational musicians from the 80's and 90's. Stone and Jeff started playing together in 1984 as members of Green River, which eventually dissolved, leading singer Mark Arm to form Mudhoney. Later, Jeff played bass and Stone played guitar in Mother Love Bone until their lead singer Andrew Wood died of an overdose just days before their major label debut in March of 1990. Reeling from Andy's death, Jeff and Stone started recording with Soundgarden's Chris Cornell on a side project called Temple Of The Dog that featured vocals from a then unknown singer from San Diego named Eddie Vedder. Later that year, Jeff and Stone asked Eddie to join their new band with guitarist Mike McCready. As Pearl Jam, they released their debut album Ten in August of ‘91—the album went 13 times platinum and charted on Billboard for nearly five years. Since then, Pearl Jam have released 11 more albums and built a die-hard fan base thanks in part to their outstanding live shows. Last week they released their latest album, Dark Matter, which was produced by Andrew Watt, who's recently worked with Miley Cyrus, Iggy Pop, Post Malone and Ozzy Osborne. On today's episode Leah Rose talks to Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament about how Andrew Watt's encyclopedic knowledge of Pearl Jam helped inspire some of their best performances to date. Stone and Jeff also open up about the inner-workings of their professional relationship, and Stone remembers the first time he met Eddie Vedder, who marked the occasion by passing him a hand-written poem.
