In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Jodi Gilman discuss the implications of cannabis use on health and safety. Dr. Gilman explains that THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, binds to cannabinoid receptors in the brain, affecting areas involved in emotion, memory, and decision-making. Cannabis use can lead to long-term brain alterations, particularly in adolescents, frequent users, and those using high-potency products. Dr. Gilman highlights the risks of cannabis-induced psychosis, depression, and anxiety, especially in those with a family history of psychosis. She also notes the lack of evidence for medical marijuana's efficacy and the challenges in detecting cannabis impairment. Key Takeaways: Edibles typically last longer than smoked or vaped cannabis, but it takes longer to feel the effects. It can take 30-60 minutes to reach the brain. The three things that make cannabis risky are the age you start to use cannabis, the frequency of use, and the potency of the product you are using. Those three factors increase the likelihood of long-term alterations on the brain, structurally and functionally. Cannabis is a psychoactive substance, like alcohol, tobacco, nicotine, and cocaine; it is addictive to some people. It is estimated that 1 in 5 people who use cannabis will become addicted. THC impairs attention, it impairs coordination, and it impairs reaction time - all of these are critical for driving. THC is thought to double the risk of a crash. "People think cannabis is safe, like bubble gum. It's not bubble gum. It's a psychoactive compound that affects your brain, and you really need to be cautious about these products." — Dr. Jodi Gilman Connect with Dr. Jodi Gilman: Professional Bio: https://researchers.mgh.harvard.edu/profile/4080912/Jodi-Gilman LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jodi-gilman-474a4ab4/ Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Associations of Dispositional Mindfulness with Obesity and Central Adiposity: The New England Family StudyIn this episode, Dr. Jud Brewer and colleagues examine how dispositional mindfulness—the ability to nonjudgmentally attend to one's mental and physical experiences—relates to obesity and central adiposity. Drawing on findings from the New England Family Study, they explore associations between mindfulness levels and body composition, including android fat mass and android/gynoid fat mass ratio. Discover how mindfulness might influence long-term self-regulation and lifestyle choices, potentially offering a novel pathway for obesity prevention and intervention. This research highlights the importance of integrating psychological and behavioral insights into public health strategies for addressing obesity. A voi l'ardua sentenza.Con Federica Caslotti e Martina Da RosGrazie ABEditore per averci fatto scoprire questa perla!
Send us a textOur fiery guest said it herself; she's almost 80 years old and still a disruptor.Meet Diane Gilman—fashion icon, teleretail queen, and all-around badass who refuses to fade into the background. She built an empire by rewriting the rules, and now she's here to do the same for aging.Because let's be real—society has a plan for women after a certain age. And it's not fabulous. If you don't have your own vision, the world will grind you up and spit you out. Diane's not having it.From the beginning, Diane had an obvious destiny—talent, drive, and a few wild chances that took her to becoming the most successful tele-retailer on TV (at 60 no less). But her story isn't just about the wins—it's about the risks, the reinventions, and the moments that changed everything.Diane faced breast cancer in her 70s. Her diagnosis went from hopeless to pow, pow, pow—knocking it out and coming back stronger. She shares a lightning-strike moment that didn't just wake her up—it gave her a whole new purpose: helping women own their third act.To Diane, age is JUST a number. And how you feel? A choice. Some of you may say… “But Oonagh, I feel tired and achy!!!” Yeah, that happens. But you're not powerless. Take care of yourself. Feed your body. Move it. Treat it like the powerhouse it is.If you're not learning, growing, and keeping up—you're going backwards. You have to be fluid or you'll turn into cement. And yes, that means getting the new iPhone. Watching what the kids are watching. Staying curious. You are still wired to learn new things—don't let anyone tell you otherwise.Craving more of Diane's wisdom? Tune in to her podcast, Too Young to Be Old.What's Inside:Diane's rise to TV retail queen.Beating cancer and finding purpose. The secret to a successful third act.Why keeping up and learning new things is the key to aging well. Since the dawn of the smartphone era, everybody has carried a camera with them at all times. If anything, there are too many photos and videos being recorded at concerts. We all know the annoyance of being distracted from the music by outstretched arms holding up glowing screens in front of the stage. During the early years of the Bay Area punk scene, however, there was usually only one person with a camera documenting the action – Murray Bowles. Back when this aggressively self-marginalized genre was relegated to sweaty basements, decrepit warehouses, and outdoor wastelands, Murray could consistently be found in the mosh pit, snapping photos of the glorious chaos erupting around him. As the scene's popularity grew, buoyed by local institutions like all-ages club 924 Gilman and Maximumnrocknroll magazine, Murray's images became the defining visual documentation of a punk rock renaissance. He was even immortalized (in cartoon form) on the cover of Green Day's “Dookie,” the biggest selling punk album of all time. “Hail Murray: The Bay Area Punk Photography of Murray Bowles, 1982-1995” (Last Gasp) is the first book to compile his explosive photographic catalogue and pay tribute to the man behind the lens. This episode features an interview with Anna Brown, a lifelong friend of Murray who compiled this posthumous retrospective. https://lastgasp.com/products/hail-murray Don't forget to follow the East Bay Yesterday Substack for updates on events, boat tours, exhibits, and other local history news. https://substack.com/@eastbayyesterday Donate to keep this show alive: https://www.patreon.com/eastbayyesterday

Jonathan Blake and Nils Gilman join us to discuss their recent book, Children of a Modest Star: Planetary Thinking for an Age of Crises, in which they propose a framework of "planetary thinking" to address the interconnected crises facing humanity. Drawing on historical lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the eradication of smallpox, among other examples, Blake and Gilman advocate for moving beyond traditional state-centered responses. They urge a reorientation toward systemic, planetary-scale challenges that acknowledge humanity's deep entanglement with ecological and biogeochemical systems. In this episode, we explore why "planetarity" is an idea whose time has come, the limitations of anthropocentric institutions, the practicalities of planetary governance in a world marked by socio-political differences, and the critical role of new epistemological frameworks in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and global security. Jonathan Blake is the Associate Director of Programs at the Berggruen Institute, where he oversees research projects and the broader research agenda for the Planetary Program. A political scientist with a PhD from UC Berkeley, his work focuses on planetary politics, ethnic conflict, and migration, among other topics. His writing has appeared in Noema, where he serves as Associate Editor, as well as in The Atlantic, Boston Review, The Nation, Los Angeles Review of Books, and various academic journals. Nils Gilman is the Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President at the Berggruen Institute and also serves as Deputy Editor of Noema Magazine. He is the author of Mandarins of the Future: Modernization Theory in Cold War America (2004), Deviant Globalization: Black Market Economy in the 21st Century (2011), and Children of a Modest Star: Planetary Thinking for an Age of Crises (2024). Holding a Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctorate in History from UC Berkeley, Gilman is a historian and political theorist with a career spanning academia and consultancy in international security. His work has contributed to foundational insights on climate security and governance, and his writings frequently explore the limitations of current institutions in addressing planetary-scale crises, positioning him as a leading voice in reimagining governance frameworks for the Anthropocene. Y'all. I'm so excited that I got to chat with Diane Gilman in this episode of She's Not Done Yet: Conversations with Women over 50! We talk about her life experience, including her experience with breast cancer in her 70's. When you listen to our conversation, you will understand why she titled her memoir Too Young to be Old. In our wide ranging conversation, we talk about being a first generation American, the importance of our families of choice, what it's like to be a silver-haired glamour girl, and pivoting from a brilliantly successful career as QVC's Jean Queen to a new career as a podcaster. Diane shares how her old ways of thinking fell away with her cancer diagnosis and she became something shiny and new. There's a truism that goes something like this: We only get more like our true selves as we get older. Diane and I are here to tell you that's true - and it's a powerful thing! She left us with 3 life lessons: Avoid living in an age ghetto. Seek out women of all ages and you'll stay relevant and contemporary. Be always alert to recognize why you're here on earth and do it. There's no calendar for life - it's what we make it. Our age doesn't matter. As we have the courage to tear down our barriers and abandon our limiting beliefs, anything is possible. We're never through learning. If you enjoyed this interview with Diane Gilman, you'll love her memoir, Too Young to Be Old: How to Stay Vibrant, Visible, and Forever in Blue Jeans: 25 Secrets from TV's Jean Queen. Pediatrician Dr. Caity Gilman is here to shed light on the facts surrounding vaccines and address common concerns and questions she hears most often from parents in her practice, like: - Does the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine cause autism? (Spoiler: No, vaccines do not cause autism.) - Do I need to vaccinate my child based on my pediatrician's suggested schedule? - What are the risks of stopping administering vaccines to children? - If vaccines are so good, why don't we have them for more things, like the common cold? - Is it really necessary to get a flu shot every year? - Are people given the actual disease when they get a vaccine? If so, then why not just get the illness itself and let my immune system learn to fight it? - Should you give your baby Tylenol before a vaccine so the shot hurts less? If you've ever had questions or felt unsure about vaccines, this episode is packed with helpful, expert-driven insights. Dr. Gilman's thoughtful, research-backed approach is sure to leave you feeling more informed and empowered! Carey spoke with Brian Gilman, a Marine Corps veteran and the CEO of Warriors & Quiet Waters. Brian's background uniquely qualifies him to evolve WQWF's impact. It starts with his generational roots in Butte, Montana—a hard-rock mining town chiseled into the mountains by a relentless work ethic. An avid outdoorsman, devoted husband, and proud father, Brian finds peace in the solace of nature, meaning in his wife and two sons, and purpose in equipping fellow veterans to discover their own peace, meaning, and purpose. In the shadowy corners of Arkham, where ancient gables loom and whispers of eldritch horrors echo through time-worn streets, lies the infamous Witch House. Within its warped walls, young Walter Gilman finds himself ensnared in a web of mathematical arcana and otherworldly terror. As he delves deeper into non-Euclidean geometries and the forbidden lore of long-dead sorceress Keziah Mason, Gilman's fevered dreams begin to blur the boundaries between reality and nightmare. H.P. Lovecraft's "The Dreams in the Witch House" weaves a tale of cosmic dread and insidious witchcraft, where the very fabric of space and time unravels before the protagonist's—and the reader's—horrified gaze. Jason Gilman from Element 84 discusses the integration of large language models (LLMs) with geospatial data to enhance search and analysis capabilities in his talk at FOSS4G NA 2024. Highlights
In this conversation, Diane Gilman shares her remarkable journey from aspiring fashion designer to a successful tele-retail personality, overcoming personal tragedies, including the loss of her husband and her own battle with breast cancer. She emphasizes the importance of resilience, the need for supportive aftercare, and challenges the stigma of aging and ageism. Diane's story is one of empowerment, reinvention, and a commitment to inspire others, particularly women, to embrace their talents and live fulfilling lives regardless of age. After 30 years of experience in front of the camera connecting with the baby boomer audience on television, Diane has set out to become a proaging advocate and a “Silver-haired Influencer”. Through social media, YouTube and the launch of her podcast, Too Young To Be Old, Diane's goal is to educate and inspire the 50+ community in a range of lifestyle topics such as fashion, health & wellness, fashion, beauty & skincare, and everything aging solutions. Encouraged, she opened a boutique in LA that attracted a celebrity clientele, then moved to San Francisco after graduation where she produced denim creations for Jerry Garcia, Jim Morrison, and other musical greats. In her 20s, she moved to New York City, fitting Madonna-style “bullet bras” at Bloomingdale's by day, and socializing with celebrities at Studio 54 and the Peppermint Lounge by night. She pioneered the first line of women's washable silk garments, creating a phenomenon with “The Diane Gilman Collection,” which took off when QVC invited Diane to sell her silks on-air, creating a loyal fan base. When Diane lost her husband at age 52 after a long illness, she dove into her work, and by the age of 57, ballooned to 200 pounds, which was uncomfortable and frustrating. A year shy of 60, she decided to reconnect with her sense of self worth, and set out to find a pair of jeans that fit and flattered a mature woman's body– to no avail. But then she had a light bulb moment that changed her life completely. Boomer women needed jeans to fit their bodies and make them feel beautiful and sexy, so she decided to design them herself in a way that stretched, lifted and boosted boomer women in all the right places. Her DG2 jeans were an overnight sensation, and she quickly earned the title “Jeans Queen”. By 2019, her DG2 Jeans line had sold more than 19 million pairs on HSN and she became the network's longest running and number one fashion personality, achieving sales of $150+ million annually. Her biggest career success hit at age 60! But just as Diane enjoyed her meteoric rise, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her oncologist told her that she was a great candidate for survival because she was such a fighter. Diane turned tragedy into triumph. And while chemo stole her famous long, auburn hair, she emerged triumphant, with bright, white hair that illuminates her face and symbolizes her defiance and determination. Diane's early aspirations were shaped by her immigrant background. Leaving home at a young age led Diane to pursue her dreams. Tele-retail became a platform for Diane to showcase her talent. Diane's personal struggles fueled her desire to create a fashion line for middle-aged women. The loss of her husband was a pivotal moment in Diane's life. Diane's battle with breast cancer taught her resilience and gratitude. She emphasizes the importance of aftercare in the healing process. Diane challenges ageism and advocates for the value of older generations. Her journey reflects the power of reinvention and self-discovery. Diane's future goals include inspiring others and fighting ageism.
