It's been an incredibly busy few weeks in Catholic world, so Jen Mauro and Mike Walsh brought in someone working at least as much as they are to talk shop - Jose Rodrigues, the Director of Family and Youth Ministry for the Diocese of Camden. As Catholic world is in full-swing again, the trio talk about a recent, hugely successful catechist event, an upcoming Synod event that will feature the awarding of Bishop Dennis Sullivan's first Bishop's Medal to parishioners and staff in South Jersey, and Jose's own upcoming nuptials! At the midpoint of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), hosts Marianela Nunez and Mike Walsh chat with two favorite returning guests, Fr. Rene Canales, pastor, Our Lady of Guaduple Parish Shrine, Lindenwold, NJ and Helen Persing, principal, Saint John Paul II Elementary School, Stratford, NJ. Fr. Canales and Mrs. Persing have been working together as pastor and principal for only a year, but their individual work with Hispanic populations has been at the forefront of their daily lives for many years. On today's show, we discuss the uniqueness of the many Latino cultures living in the South Jersey region and the benefits that are discovered when they are welcomed into our parish and school communities. Fr. Canales has his own story as well, which we didn't get to chat with him about on the podcast, but should not be missed as he became a U.S. citizen only a few short years ago. He's the co-host of the Freelance Network Podcast and Chatting Cinema. He's been featured, worked on, created, and co-created countless short films, music videos, and media. Luke graciously had me on the Freelance Network Podcast, which he co-hosted until he graduated. From there we became fast friends. It's one thing to have a friend pursuing a career in video while you're pursuing a career in audio, but it's something completely different to see them grow over the course of 2 years. When we met we were still in college trying to figure it out. We haven't stopped trying to figure it out, we just happened to carve our paths much deeper since the last time we spoke. In the mood to party? Everyone is invited to a 21st birthday celebration to enjoy a nice adult beverage. The beverage of choice and the epic 21st Anniversary Party is being thrown by 21st Amendment Brewery. We will chat with Co-Founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O'Sullivan about the party at the brewery and about how 21st Amendment Brewery releases a new 21st Anniversary West Coast IPA in 33 states across the country in tribute to the hottest beer style that defined the brewing scene. Established in 2000, 21st Amendment brewpub in San Francisco's historic South Park neighborhood quickly became one of the city's favorite pubs. 21st Amendment began expanding beyond the Bay Area by helping to pioneer the movement to canned craft beer. Known for their witty names and delicious brews, 21st Amendment offers year-round selections, as well as seasonal offerings and their infamous once-in-a-while limited-edition releases. Sold in 33 states plus Washington D.C., 21st Amendment produces beer in its state-of-the-art brewery headquarters in San Leandro, California and is among the top 50 craft beer brewers in America. Then we will be joined by Fred and Perteet McSween Spencer, Co-founders of AYO Foods bringing authentic West-African Cuisine to U.S. grocers with their homemade frozen food line being in nearly 50 Whole Foods Market locations. Also the company just launched their new hot sauce line which will be carried by 1200 grocery stores across the US making it accessible to those who love to explore and enjoy ethnic foods. AYO, which means joy in Yoruba, features nutrient-dense, flavor-rich, frozen entrees that are conveniently packaged and now all of their dishes can be spiced up even more with their new West African Shito Sauce and Pepper Sauce being added to their product line. Last but certainly not least, Richard Massi the President and Co-Founder of Fight On Makenna Foundation will tell us about the 2021 Bite for the Fight Food Festival happening on Saturday, September 25th. The Fight on Makenna Foundation was created in the memory of his 14 year old daughter Makenna who lost her battle with leukemia in September 2018. The Fight on Makenna Foundation's mission is to improve the quality of life for kids and families facing pediatric cancer. In their two short years of existence, they have raised over $200K to help fund programs in partnership with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to help kids and families as they deal with the rigors of cancer treatments. Makenna was a foodie (mostly carnivore) and loved friends, family, the Food Network, and the Philadelphia Eagles. So they created Bite for the Fight to showcase some of the best food, beer, wine, and spirits in the Philadelphia Area. Makenna was a fighter to the end of her short life and they brought that competitive spirit to the festival by allowing the restaurants to compete for the honor of the Best Bite voted on by the patrons of the festival. The 2019 event was even attended by Chef Robert Irvine. You say you STILL NEED MORE!!! Don't forget we still have our regular weekly segments from author, Courier-Post nightlife correspondent and The New York Times recognized blogger John Howard-Fusco for foodie news of the week, Chef Barbie Marshall who is a Chef Gordon Ramsay Hell's Kitchen Season 10 finalist and has appeared on Season 17 of FOX Hell's Kitchen #AllStars as well named Pennsylvania's most influential chef by Cooking Light will delight us with her observation of the week, highly acclaimed and respected Vegan Chef Christina Martin will delight with her ‘Healthy Bite' of week giving nourishing and wholesome advice, and a joke of the week from legendary joke teller Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling of The Howard Stern Show fame. After a short summer hiatus, The Leftscape is back with a new theme for the second half of 2021. This is the season of ACCEPTANCE. What does acceptance mean to you? When is it passive and when is it powerful? What things ought we accept? What must we never accept? Let's see how this theme weaves in and out of the conversations through the rest of the year. The first featured guest of the season is Daniel Kaye. Daniel Kaye has been a writer and artist for over 25 years, working as a journalist, editor, columnist, editorial cartoonist, and book illustrator. He is the creator of the comic strip, MILO K., hermit crab. His most recent book, with text by Rabbi Howard Bogot, is Never Tell a Hermit Crab We Can't Repair the World. Daniel is also the Director of Life Enrichment and Community Engagement at a Life Plan Community in the Philadelphia area. He shares openly about dealing with anxiety and depression and the many ways he works toward making life better for himself and others. Earlier in this episode: The exploration of Ikigai continues. This time, co-hosts Wendy Sheridan and Robin Renée focus on the plusses and minuses of monetizing what they most enjoy doing. In the news, the Tunisian government has been dismissed by the president, Joe Biden authorizes funds to help evacuate Afghani interpreters as the U.S. leaves the 20-year war, attempts to stifle discussions of racism in schools abound, and a queer valedictorian in South Jersey gets rudely cut off, then completes his moving speech. Oh, and a guy spent some time trapped in the mouth of a whale. Robin and Wendy get things started with 3 Random Facts about B1 cells, The Final Concert, and the origins of the pop out cake. At the end of the show is the new mini-segment, You Got Questions? We Got Answers!, Robin responds to "Is Guardians of the Galaxy yacht rock?" Things to do: Learn more about the work of Daniel Kaye and order his books. All proceeds go to charity. Check out MILO K., hermit crab on webtoons.com. Watch Cells at Work! on Netflix. D and L Coffee Service Inc. presents Small Bites Radio the #1 listed “Food Radio show Philadelphia” and #1 listed “Food Radio show South Jersey”. Small Bites on Wildfire Radio returns this Sunday, July 25th at 635pm EST with a fantastic lineup! #SmallBitesRadio has been named #14 out of the Top 30 Best Hospitality Shows on the planet for 2020 and 2021 as well as being named #23 Top Philadelphia Lifestyle Influencer in 2021. With the show having a #BBQ theme, who better to be special co-host this week than pitmaster Timothy Monk of MONKMAN'S BBQ & EGG ROLLS known for his legendary egg rolls and delicious homemade Bar-B-Que. He had a passion and hobby for barbecuing that with hard work and recipe development has turned a dream into a loyal local cult following. People anxiously wait for his pop-up events to be announced and as soon as they are they always sell-out in mere hours. We will kick things off talking to Bill Gillespie a bestselling author and the founder of Smokin' Hoggz BBQ an award-winning barbecue team that has claimed top prize in the Jack Daniel's World Championship Invitational BBQ and the American Royal Association Invitational, and has won hundreds of other barbecue awards. His new book ‘Hot and Fast BBQ on Your Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker' teaches grillers how to get amazing BBQ as fast as possible on their Weber Smokey Mountain. The book starts by teaching readers the basics of getting started with a Weber Smokey Mountain including components of the grill itself, differences between the size options, and the most important ingredients for smoking success (charcoal, smoke wood, brines, marinades, etc.) to ensure they have the groundwork laid out before hopping into one of Bill's award-winning recipes. Then Chris Sussman, a.k.a. The BBQ Buddha will join us. He has cooked on award-winning BBQ competition teams such as EGGcellent Eats and Dizzy Pig, and is a member of the Big Green Egg Pro Team. In Chris's cookbook, ‘The Four Fundamentals of Smoking' it teaches readers about the four fundamental principles that have the most impact on whether the meat comes out tasting succulent, tender and pleasantly smokey, or dry, rubbery and bland. Chris demystifies concepts like controlling air flow and humidity to perfectly capture smoke flavor in food, as well as maintaining the ideal BBQ zone temperature, and the secrets to knowing when a cook is complete, which go beyond internal temperature. Chris gives readers a sturdy foundation of knowledge, then shares foolproof recipes demonstrating these techniques in action with additional tips, so their BBQ comes out perfectly tender with incredible smoky flavor every time. Last, but certainly not least we'll chat with Adam McKenzie the creator of This Jew Can Que. His debut cookbook, ‘Weeknight Smoking on Your Traeger', shows people that smoking and grilling have never been easier thanks to his recipes that take advantage of the hands-off, fast-cooking features of the popular Traeger Grills and other wood pellet grills so that grilling doesn't have to be a hobby reserved for the weekend. It's something you can easily include in your busy life for a weeknight meal, thanks to Adam's recipes that take advantage of the hands-off, fast-cooking features of the popular Traeger grill and other wood pellet grills. Also Adam has collaborated with nationally recognized brands, namely Traeger® Wood Fired Grills as well as Snake River Farms, Head Country Bar-B-Que and more as well he has partnered with Spiceology to create a line of seasoning blends. You say you STILL NEED MORE!!! Don't forget we still have our regular weekly segments from author, Courier-Post nightlife correspondent, The Peasant Wife contributor, and The New York Times recognized blogger John Howard-Fusco for foodie news of the week, Chef Barbie Marshall who is a Chef Gordon Ramsay Hell's Kitchen Season 10 finalist and has appeared on Season 17 of FOX Hell's Kitchen #AllStars as well named Pennsylvania's most influential chef by Cooking Light will delight us with her observation of the week, highly acclaimed and respected Vegan Chef Christina Martin will delight with her ‘Healthy Bite' of week giving nourishing and wholesome advice, and a joke of the week from legendary joke teller Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling of The Howard Stern Show fame. Despite our food culture's deification of preserving ingredients through classic methods like canning and fermenting, we've relegated the freezer to the category of TV dinners and overwrought casseroles. But the freezer can be your best meal-prepping friend, and the easiest way to always have a ready-made meal on hand. Modern Freezer Meals provides one hundred fresh recipes for frozen food—from healthy, vibrant grain bowls to proteins cooked straight from the freezer with tons of flavor still intact. What to travel the world and never leave the comfort of home? Well Andre Darlington an award-winning beverage columnist and restaurant critic with his work being featured in New York Magazine, Paste Magazine, Imbibe Magazine, Punch Newspapers, Refinery29, and PARADE Magazine, among others has the perfect solution. Kids are notorious picky eaters. Well Joshua David Stein may have found the solution with his upcoming cookbook ‘Cooking for Your Kids: At Home with the World's Greatest Chefs' from Phaidon.com Press available for preorder and released on July 28th. Let the pros help you plan and prep meals for your family home-cooking recipes used by chefs to feed those they love! Looking for meals that will appeal to everyone around the table? Cooking for Your Kids is the perfect solution: 100 recipes — breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner, treats — from the repertoires of world-famous chefs who cook for their children at home. Charming first-person stories offer a glimpse into their private lives as they strive to raise adventurous (and healthy) eaters. The chefs explain why each dish is much-loved, highlight how ingredients can expand palates, reveal insider tips, and share their work-life balance challenges. You say you STILL NEED MORE!!! The common description is that of a bipedal kangaroo-like or wyvern-like creature with a horse- or goat-like head, leathery bat-like wings, horns, small arms with clawed hands, legs with cloven hooves, and a forked tail.
