Have you ever wondered about the dark side of the American dream? In this episode, we delve into the complete Seabrook Farms history, a story of ambition, innovation, and betrayal that built—and ultimately destroyed—one of America's largest agricultural empires. Author John Seabrook, grandson of the company's visionary founder, joins us to discuss his book, The Spinach King, and unearth the secrets buried beneath a dynasty built on frozen vegetables. We explore the complex question of how a family can create a national brand from nothing, only to have it torn apart by the very man who built it.From its humble beginnings as a small truck farm in southern New Jersey, Seabrook Farms grew into a powerhouse that froze one-third of the nation's vegetables. John Seabrook recounts the story of his great-grandfather, a skilled farmer, and his grandfather, C.F. Seabrook, a Fordist industrialist who brought mass production to agriculture. C.F. Seabrook partnered with the legendary Clarence Birdseye to pioneer the flash-freezing process for vegetables, introducing staples like the lima bean to the East Coast. But this success came at a cost. We uncover the shocking story of CF Seabrook erasing his father from history, fabricating a more "illustrious" ancestry to bolster the family brand while cheating his own father out of the company he helped build. The episode examines the complex labor practices that defined the company. We discuss the controversial story of the Seabrook Farms Japanese-American workers, who were recruited from internment camps during World War II under Executive Order 9066, as well as Estonian workers from displaced persons camps after the war. While the company created a unique, multicultural community in Seabrook, New Jersey, this benevolent image is contrasted with a much darker chapter: the violent 1934 Seabrook Farms labor strike. John Seabrook reveals how this event, involving armed vigilantes and the KKK, was systematically erased from the official company narrative. The full Seabrook Farms history is a complex tale of both progress and oppression, culminating in a family war that led to the company's collapse in 1959. This interview, inspired by the book John Seabrook The Spinach King, exposes the human drama behind the iconic brand, from a cameo in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey to the family's strange friendship with a gangster bodyguard and the fairytale meeting of John's parents at Grace Kelly's royal wedding.About Our Guest:John Seabrook is the author of The Spinach King: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty and a long-time staff writer at The New Yorker. As the son and grandson of the men at the center of the Seabrook Farms empire, he provides a deeply personal and unflinchingly honest account of his family's incredible rise and devastating fall, piecing together a story of innovation, family conflict, and the hidden costs of success.Timestamps:(0:00) The Dark Secrets of an American Food Dynasty(2:05) The Rise of a Frozen Vegetable Empire and the History of Seabrook Farms(8:40) Erasing a Patriarch: How C.F. Sal's call of the day features Adam from South Jersey, a self-proclaimed 56-year-old diehard Yankee fan and football coach, who passionately and angrily denounces the Yankees for being "stupid" and "scripted." Adam compares the team's predictable decision-making to a rigid football coach who won't deviate from a pre-written playbook, even when the situation demands a change. His frustration culminates in him turning off the game when Devin Williams came in, knowing exactly how it would end, and later referring to the team as a "bunch of morons" for sticking to a script they wrote themselves.

Hello: Autumn, 1949. Fortune editor Bill Furth, flinty-eyed gatekeeper, scans a manuscript from 30-year-old whiz kid Daniel Bell. Spots the word “charisma.” Snorts. Blue pencil meets page. Word dies swiftly, without much appeal. Fast forward ten years: charisma is everywhere. Eggheads bandy it, pundits quote it, preachers peddle it. Bell—vindicated. Since the 1950s, Americans have grown used to the word “charisma” being applied to everyone, often as a synonym for “charm”.. But what if charisma is more than charm or personal magnetism—what if it's a key to understanding the moral and spiritual crises of American life itself? That's the argument of Spellbound: How Charisma Shaped American History from the Puritans to Donald Trump, a sweeping new book by my guest historian Molly Worthen. In it, she traces the tangled story of charisma across four centuries of American history—from the Puritans through Andrew Jackson, to Malcolm X and Donald Trump.Charismatic leaders, Worthen argues, don't simply stir emotions or win votes. They offer something deeper: a sense of cosmic meaning, spiritual clarity, and moral urgency in moments when traditional institutions seem hollow or adrift. In times of upheaval, we look for figures who promise to reveal hidden truths and restore a broken order. Molly Worthen is a scholar of American religious and intellectual history. She is Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and writes regularly on religion and politics for the New York Times and other national outlets. Spellbound is her third book; she has previously authored Apostles of Reason: The Crisis of Authority in American Evangelicalism and The Man on Whom Nothing Was Lost, a biography of the diplomat, Yale professor, and  Bridgeton, NJ native Charles Hill. (That last for my five listeners in South Jersey.)

In today's episode of Zen and the Art of Real Estate Investing, Jonathan welcomes Peter Neill, co-founder and partner at GSP REI, for a conversation that blends capital raising, real estate development, and a commitment to rebuilding underserved communities. Peter shares how he moved from a sales and marketing role at a distressed mortgage firm to managing funds focused on affordable and workforce housing throughout the Mid-Atlantic. Along the way, he discovered that long-term success in real estate hinges on experience, consistency, and assembling the right team. Peter reflects on early lessons—managing his first duplex, working alongside seasoned mentors, and learning to value communication as much as capital. His partnership with Ron, a builder with decades of experience, provided Peter with a clear understanding of the construction side of real estate, which is crucial when repositioning distressed single-family homes for long-term rental. Together, their team redevelops blighted homes in cities such as Philadelphia, Baltimore, and parts of South Jersey, focusing on high-quality work and sustainable investment returns. Throughout the episode, Jonathan and Peter discuss the challenges of raising private capital in today's market, why marketing alone is insufficient without execution, and how Peter's team utilizes vertical integration to manage construction and property oversight internally. The conversation underscores the importance of knowing your market, especially when working in workforce housing, where local demand and regulation can make or break a deal. They also talk about investor education, red flags in the capital-raising world, and why transparency and authenticity build more trust than flashy pitch decks. Peter emphasizes staying close to the work, whether that means walking properties, managing renovations, or talking to tenants. As someone who raises funds and executes deals, he believes you can't fake experience, and that humility and honest communication go further than hype. This episode is packed with practical knowledge for anyone managing real estate projects, raising capital, or trying to build a sustainable, ethical investment business in today's complex market. You're not imagining it—your projects might actually be running you. If you've ever felt like your design clients are unclear, unsure, or unexpectedly intense mid-project, it's likely not a personality issue. It's a systems issue. In this episode, designer Shila Griffith of SG23 Design reveals the exact processes and boundaries that keep her projects running smooth, her team aligned, and her clients confident from start to finish. From her strategic intake forms to her “you paid for that three months ago” moment of bliss, Shila walks through the real-world fixes newer designers need to confidently lead their projects. This isn't about being cold or corporate—it's about clarity, structure, and trust. You'll learn: ✅ Why upfront pricing (yes, even 50%) calms client anxiety ✅ How to spot red flags in new client inquiries ✅ The conversation that prevents renovation freakouts before they happen ✅ What to say when clients want to buy their own stuff, and why boundaries boost your quality of life If you're an interior designer looking to finally feel in control of your client process (instead of constantly catching up), this is the episode that's going to help you get there. With over a decade of hands-on experience—including more than five years at a prestigious architecture firm—Shila brings a rare blend of aesthetic finesse and construction-focused expertise to every project. She is NCIDQ Certified and LEED AP accredited, and her philosophy—“Stay Inspired, Not Overwhelmed”—reflects her deep belief that smart systems and empathetic communication create transformative, yet stress-free environments. John Seabrook's new book is about a family business—not a mom-and-pop store, but a huge operation run by a ruthless patriarch. The patriarch is aging, and he cannot stand to lose his hold on power, nor let his children take over the enterprise. This might sound like the plot of HBO's drama “Succession,” but the story John tells in “The Spinach King” is about a real family: the Seabrooks, of Seabrook, New Jersey. His grandfather C.F. Seabrook built a frozen-food empire in the farmland of South Jersey, which produced one third of the nation's frozen vegetables at its height. The P.R. was about a hard-working and innovative farm family, but the business, behind the scenes, advanced with political corruption and violence against organized labor. Then C.F. destroyed his business and his family rather than cede control to his sons. John—a staff writer who has covered many subjects for The New Yorker, most notably music—talks with David Remnick about the consequences of inherited wealth, and overcoming a family legacy of suspicion and emotional abuse.

Known for his emotionally charged, wildly entertaining, and deeply human stories, Peter has become one of the most beloved voices in the storytelling world. A longtime host and GrandSLAM champion with The Moth, Peter's work explores grief, rage, love, redemption, and the quiet moments that define who we are. In this episode, we sit down with Peter to trace the creative arc of his life—from growing up in South Jersey and leaving football behind, to traveling the country with Chicago City Limits, and eventually becoming a core figure in The Moth's rise to cultural prominence. Along the way, we explore why storytelling isn't just communication—it's how we make sense of being human. Peter's story intersects with some of the greats, including his longtime friendship with creative musician and experimental educator Dave Gould, who introduced him at a transformative moment in Iowa City. Together, their work reminds us that story is not just scientific—it's deeply experiential. It's memory. It's identity. It's the way we heal, connect, and lead. We also revisit some of Peter's most memorable performances, including: “You're Not Alone” (The Moth Mainstage, Metropolitan Museum of Art) — a heartbreaking and healing story about Christmas with his mother “The Italian Ice Fight” — a wild, true tale about a summer job that ended with a hammer, a fight, and a lesson in fear Daddy Issues (his one-man show) — a raw, theatrical journey through masculinity, shame, and survival Appearances on Conan and in venues like the Bitter End, Highline Ballroom, and under-the-radar NYC gems like Under St. Mark's In this episode, you'll learn: + How vulnerability builds creative credibility + Why your real voice is more powerful than your polished one + How to structure stories that resonate emotionally—without overproducing + What brands and leaders can learn from live storytelling and audience honesty + How to tell stories that invite recognition, not just applause Whether you're leading a brand, creating a presentation, or trying to inspire others—this episode is a reminder that the most unforgettable stories are the ones that don't try too hard. Tori grew up in a colonial house in South Jersey with a history as rich as its age—dating back to the 1700s. But there's one particular story from her teenage years that still stands out: an eerie encounter with an entity that seemed to feed on her anger and negative emotions. After a particularly heated argument with her sister, Tori found herself face-to-face with a translucent, dense presence that drained the energy right out of her. What was this ghostly entity, and why was it so drawn to her teenage angst? Join us for this chilling tale of emotional energy and haunting spirits. Our longtime friend Ira Jersey is here for a bonus episode to discuss his club, Real Central New Jersey. Founded in early 2020 (what a fun time), RCNJ sought to bridge the divide between soccer in North Jersey and soccer in South Jersey. But what has the club learned along the way? How has it grown and stayed increasingly relevant in its local community? And, right off the bat, is it "ray-al" or "real?" Plus, the potential impact of promotion and relegation, the barriers to growth for small clubs, and much much more! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
