John Seabrook's new book is about a family business—not a mom-and-pop store, but a huge operation run by a ruthless patriarch. The patriarch is aging, and he cannot stand to lose his hold on power, nor let his children take over the enterprise. This might sound like the plot of HBO's drama “Succession,” but the story John tells in “The Spinach King” is about a real family: the Seabrooks, of Seabrook, New Jersey. His grandfather C.F. Seabrook built a frozen-food empire in the farmland of South Jersey, which produced one third of the nation's frozen vegetables at its height. The P.R. was about a hard-working and innovative farm family, but the business, behind the scenes, advanced with political corruption and violence against organized labor. Then C.F. destroyed his business and his family rather than cede control to his sons. John—a staff writer who has covered many subjects for The New Yorker, most notably music—talks with David Remnick about the consequences of inherited wealth, and overcoming a family legacy of suspicion and emotional abuse.

Scott Levi Jones, this blue-collar poet was born in South Jersey and as he says, baptized by the local nuclear plant in Salem County. He spent his early 20's working construction while performing in honky-tonks and dive bars all across the Dirty South. Today he resides in a small cabin as a full-time independent musician. The songwriter's lyrical ability has been compared to that of John Prine and Steve Goodman, yet his music reflects the sound of folk rock influences such as The Band and Little Feat. Dur-ing 2020 he released his debut album ‘The Odds of You and Me' recorded at the historic Mu-sic Row studio ‘House of David'. The artist has since released an intimate acoustic EP, ‘The Cabin Worktapes' captured in his living room, along with multiple singles including the viral hit ‘Free Bird' which acquired over 2.5 Million views on instagram alone

After bombing his first open mic, Ryan Curtiss thought, Yeah, this is a viable option for a career. Nine years later, it has actually worked out pretty well for him. The South Jersey-based comedian has been performing all across the country. From producing and hosting shows in the tri-state area, to performing at various clubs from Pennsylvania to California, the 31-year-old comic is still going strong. He writes for New Noise Magazine and hosts the podcast Get Into It where he interviews comedians and musicians about their favorite albums. His comedy is a reflection of how he perceives his strange, and painfully awkward life.
In this lively episode of the BrandX Podcast, hosts John Jamingo and Deuce are joined by the long-awaited return of Maak, along with Diane, who provides background commentary and laughter. The conversation kicks off with stories about retirement, including Maak's recent transition into retired life and reflections on what it means to leave the workforce after decades on the job.The episode's heart dives into hilarious and sometimes outrageous stories from their years in sales, particularly focusing on their interactions with a cast of memorable colleagues and bosses—most notably, their eccentric former boss Herb. Tales of office politics, “inner circles,” and questionable management decisions are exchanged, with the hosts' signature banter and good-natured roasting.Throughout, the group shares laugh-out-loud anecdotes: from Herb's penny-pinching ways and awkward attempts at office camaraderie to sales reps skirting the rules, “milk runs,” and the infamous “crew work” trips to the Jersey Shore. Stories about office romances, misguided attempts at matchmaking, and the hazards of team dinners (including Herb pocketing cash and double-dipping expenses) paint a vivid picture of the quirks and camaraderie that shaped their office culture.Amidst the laughter and tales of misadventures, the episode also touches on personal growth, the bonds of long-term friendship, and the way nostalgia colors memories. It's a mix of behind-the-scenes antics, workplace wisdom, irreverent humor, and storytelling only old friends can pull off.Topics:[00:00:25] Reunited hosts and the return of Maak; Diane joins as background commentator [00:01:07] Maak discusses early retirement and the adjustment period [00:04:11] Introductions to old workplace characters and division “inner circles” [00:07:12] Workplace legends: flaky sales reps and unique colleagues like Lafrieda and Becker [00:12:13] Remembering classic boss Leo's “thanks a lot” retirement speech [00:16:04] Office politics and prepping for management evaluations [00:17:41] Clandestine support during workplace reviews [00:19:04] Unfair relocation offers and refusing bad deals [00:20:39] Herb's obsession over expense money and attempts to control staff [00:22:26] Office matchmaker fails: Herb gives out Diane's number secretly [00:25:09] Anecdotes about workplace gambling syndicates [00:27:17] Odd part-timers and infamous “milk runs” in sales territories [00:31:00] Sales ethics: homegrown business strategies and stretching rules [00:35:00] Cigars, product placement, and consignment sales tricks [00:43:34] Chain-store dealings: schmoozing clients and time-wasting meetings [00:46:56] Herb's micromanagement and backhanded praise [00:54:01] Sales scams: forced overstock and strong-arm tactics [01:08:21] Infamous office coffee recipe and breakroom rituals [01:11:39] Workplace health woes: stress, diabetes, and getting older [01:20:02] Podcast rage quit story and viral “donut donut donut” sound bite [01:34:41] Social geography: North, Central, and South Jersey debates [01:43:36] Listener call-in featuring the Duchess [02:12:54] Discussion about hosting and producing independent podcasts [02:43:38] Classic “Herb story”: the Crab Trap dinner scam[02:51:01] Reflections on decades of friendship, office social life, and closing thoughts
Four decades ago, Cory Satterfield arrived on campus as a heralded right-handed pitcher from South Jersey. Recruited by Cal Koonce – a member of the 1969 Amazin' Mets – and later coached by 1982 Cy Young runner-up Mike Caldwell – Cory enjoyed a career capped by leading the Camels to their first Big South baseball title in 1988 and earning all-conference and all-tournament honors along the way. Thirty-seven years since he graduated, his name is still etched in the Campbell record books. He is still ranked among the program's top five all time leaders in wins, starts, complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts. Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1988, Cory played three seasons in the minors, earning Midwest League All-Star honors in 1989. After his playing career ended Cory began a teaching career in Harnett County and later Richmond County. He was twice honored as principal of the year and later served as assistant superintendent and interim superintendent of Scotland County schools. After retiring from administrative duties, he was elected to the Richmond County Board of Education in 2022 and continues to serve that organization. In addition to playing golf whenever he can, Cory is also a member of the Athletic Director's advisory board at his alma mater. In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Cory Satterfield talks with Stan Cole about his journey to Campbell, being coached by two former major league pitchers, his deep connections with his teammates and to the Buies Creek community, and much more.

Peter Aguero isn't just a performer—he's a presence. Known for his emotionally charged, wildly entertaining, and deeply human stories, Peter has become one of the most beloved voices in the storytelling world. A longtime host and GrandSLAM champion with The Moth, Peter's work explores grief, rage, love, redemption, and the quiet moments that define who we are. In this episode, we sit down with Peter to trace the creative arc of his life—from growing up in South Jersey and leaving football behind, to traveling the country with Chicago City Limits, and eventually becoming a core figure in The Moth's rise to cultural prominence. Along the way, we explore why storytelling isn't just communication—it's how we make sense of being human. Peter's story intersects with some of the greats, including his longtime friendship with creative musician and experimental educator Dave Gould, who introduced him at a transformative moment in Iowa City. Together, their work reminds us that story is not just scientific—it's deeply experiential. It's memory. It's identity. It's the way we heal, connect, and lead. We also revisit some of Peter's most memorable performances, including: “You're Not Alone” (The Moth Mainstage, Metropolitan Museum of Art) — a heartbreaking and healing story about Christmas with his mother “The Italian Ice Fight” — a wild, true tale about a summer job that ended with a hammer, a fight, and a lesson in fear Daddy Issues (his one-man show) — a raw, theatrical journey through masculinity, shame, and survival Appearances on Conan and in venues like the Bitter End, Highline Ballroom, and under-the-radar NYC gems like Under St. Mark's In this episode, you'll learn: + How vulnerability builds creative credibility + Why your real voice is more powerful than your polished one + How to structure stories that resonate emotionally—without overproducing + What brands and leaders can learn from live storytelling and audience honesty + How to tell stories that invite recognition, not just applause Whether you're leading a brand, creating a presentation, or trying to inspire others—this episode is a reminder that the most unforgettable stories are the ones that don't try too hard. They just tell the truth.
