Dana and Tom discuss a personal favorite Western that was such a favorite for Dana that Tom grew up watching the film many times, Rio Bravo. When gunslinger Joe Burdette (Claude Akins) kills a man in a saloon, Sheriff John T. Chance (John Wayne) arrests him with the aid of the town drunk, Dude (Dean Martin). Before long, Burdette's brother, Nathan (John Russell), comes around, indicating that he's prepared to bust his brother out of jail if necessary. Chance decides to make a stand until reinforcements arrive, enlisting Dude, an old cripple named Stumpy (Walter Brennan) and baby-faced cowboy Colorado Ryan (Ricky Nelson) to help. John Carpenters Siege-Movie ist klaustrophobisch, schockierend und vor allem clever inszeniert: mit seinem ersten Film außerhalb der Film-Universität greift der noch junge Regisseur gleich nach einem Stoff, der alleine schon von seinem großen Vorbild Howard Hawks drei Mal verfilmt wurde, zuerst und zuvorderst 1959 bei RIO BRAVO. Eine Polizeistation wird belagert und die eingeschlossene Gruppe aus Polizisten und Gefangenen ist alleine im Kampf gegen gesichtslose Massen an Gang-Mitgliedern. Carpenters Regie ist effektiv, seine Schauspielführung stellt das körperliche Verhalten in den Vordergrund und versteckt so manche mimische Schwäche. Dabei folgt er einer klaren Struktur und stellt schon früh die Regeln des Films auf: klare Raumaufteilung, Horizontaufnahmen, kaum Subjektive, und wenn, dann aus Sicht der angreifenden Gang, Reduktion des Handlungsspielraums und viele, viele Anspielungen an seinen Lehrmeister Hawks (die weibliche Hauptfigur ist nach Leigh Brackett benannt, der Drehbuchautorin von RIO BRAVO, Carpenter selbst nennt sich als Cutter John T. Chance, was der Name des John Wayne-Charakters in demselben Film ist). Entsprechend scheint ASSAULT auch in Richtung des durchaus reaktionären Regie-Werks von Howard Hawks zu tendieren, wären da nicht Anleihen an das aktuelle Indie-Kino der Zeit und die Rekonstruktion des alten Kinos innerhalb eines modernen Kontexts. Helden wie John Wayne sind keine Lösung mehr, die Staatsmacht ist genauso unzuverlässig und brutal, wie die angreifende Gang – es bleibt Nihilismus und Heldentum im Moment, das aber keinen Bestand mehr haben kann.
